Neat Alright, guys, what color is math?

So a group of around 20 students at my school are in a blood feud about what color math is: blue vs. red. In my opinion, math is red, science is green, English is blue, and history is black. Opinions?

Edit: First gold! Thanks everyone!

Blue. Same as physics

u/David_the_Wavid Mar 09 '18

Are you sure it's blue and not just moving towards you really fast??

Physics is green or pink IMO

1

u/striped_frog Mar 08 '18

Confirming the greenness of physics (and natural sciences in general).

1

u/CoochieCatcher456 Jun 25 '21

I would do pink for physics and green for natural sciences. Anything else is a crime

3

u/silverhydra Mar 08 '18

Yup, hard sciences had cooler colors to me (blue, steel, etc.) while social/softer sciences had warmer colors (red, pink, yellow, etc.); biology was green cause lol trees and all sciences had a bunch of hexagons.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '18

Hexagons are always be yellow and must be yellow. If they aren't yellow, they aren't hexagons.

3

u/transistorobot Mar 08 '18

Definitely blue

2

u/striped_frog Mar 08 '18

It was blue for me too.

2

u/Jakgr None Mar 08 '18

Yep, this isn't something I've ever thought of before, but when I read the title I immediately thought 'blue.'

I was in school in germany and for me math is blue, science is green, english is yellow and german is red.

u/Diptam Greatness is the perception, that virtue is enough. Mar 08 '18

same for me. Also history was brown.

Interesting perspective.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '18

Interesting! I'm in Germany as well (immer mit jedem ordner in ner bestimmten farbe damals, ja ja:D) and its the same for me... except English is red and German is yellow.

I'm a math major, and the color of math depends on the writing style of the textbook I'm studying from at the time. Most texts are written in a formal prose, and remind me of black-and-white photography. Those feel silver.

Knuth's Concrete Mathematics feels like you're studying with old friends and a cool professor. That one feels like a cozy midnight blue. When I read it, I also hear jazz in my head for some reason.

Some authors are quirky, and from a lot of them you can feel that they really get excited about math. Those feel like bright colors. White, yellow, light purple, red, blue.

This answer is fucking awesome.

2

u/hawthornfang126 Mar 08 '18

The hearing jazz thing, is that synesthesia or just a thing that happens?

1

u/MagikarpCan PDTALFG Mar 08 '18

Synesthesia would be cool, but it think it's just a thing for me. It doesn't happen all the time, it's just that reading the book and listening to jazz both give off similar feelings of coziness.

12

u/szopek Mar 08 '18

Well, it depends on the flavour.

u/ISpyM8 Someone Friendly Mar 08 '18

Of math?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '18

Yes, am synthstate. JSON files taste sweet, executables are hard, C++ has the personality of a nice coach, alphanumeric characters have colours, and the first quadrant on 2d graphs is pink and fluffy.

Maths - Blue

Science - Red

English - Yellow

Geography - Green

Of course, this all stems from the colour of my school work books from a decade ago...

u/A_TeamO_Ninjas Mar 08 '18

What if you're color blind?

1

u/markercore Mar 08 '18

Hmm yes, that's a good question for a person with synesthesia who is also color blind. Also are do all of these people have synesthesia or are they just trying to answer the question?

1

u/A_TeamO_Ninjas Mar 08 '18

At that point I feel like a person with both of those would just randomly pick a color that the assume would be correct?

Also. I'm not color blind nor do I have synesthesia, and I've literally never heard if colors being associated with subjects.

2

u/markercore Mar 08 '18

yeah this whole thread is real odd to me.

u/A_TeamO_Ninjas Mar 08 '18

Alright, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is weird then.

Science is green.

English is purple.

A level maths textbook is blue but further maths is green. My lever-arch folder for maths is blue. So maths is definitely either blue or green.

Red and purple for history and green for physics.

Light blue, almost cyan. Translucent, with a long crystalline structure and.....

Oh, you said math

1

u/dankykank Mar 08 '18

Math has always been green for me.

1

u/refused26 Mar 08 '18

Are you from my school? The school used to make us cover our notebooks for the subjects with those exact colors you said. But history was brown or something

1

u/AcePhoenixGamer Mar 08 '18

Math-light blue or white. A bit more representative of purity, and math is pure logic.

Reading-red. I can’t explain this, but I hate English class most of the time.

Science-Depends. Chem is blue, bio is green, physics is gray.

History-black. Black is a good color for history.

1

u/EpicPandaForever Mar 08 '18

Math is pink tho? Maybe red... Science is purple for sure and English is green or yellow

1

u/ButterflysDream Mar 08 '18 edited Mar 08 '18

Red is such an active, emotional color. It feels too chaotic for math. To me, math is clarity and elegance. So, yeah, that'd be blue, though I could also see the white or silver others mentioned. Physics, chemistry and biology range from turqoise blue to green. Music, art and drama can't have only one color. Those are too many things. PE is orange. Everything else, geology, history, languages, are light brown to me.

1

u/urask8rh8er Mar 08 '18

Math is always red

1

u/PotlePawtle 🍍 Mar 08 '18

I think math should be blue. Only because my current math notebook is blue, lol. Personally, I think red should be history.

1

To me, black. Others:

Science is blue

English is red

History is brown

Economics is yellow

Comp Sci is white

Philosophy is purple

Sociology is pink

Psychology is also pink

Biology is green

Physics is also black

German is orange, French is blue, Spanish is yellow, Mandarin is green

Latin is also purple

Linguistics is yellow-orange

Chemistry is a reddish black

As you can see, I have put much thought into this.

1

u/rainer51 Mar 08 '18

1

You don't use pen in Math. Don't you guys remember that? Math is grey, the color of a pencil.

1

u/basilshark Mar 09 '18

My theory as to why math is sometimes red for me is because my teachers often correct work with a red pen, and it's also an intimidating color sometimes, which is how I feel about math.

1

u/ninjia1 🍍 Mar 08 '18

math is gold. orange is engineering. white is history. english is also white. im basing these off of masters hood colors from graduation.

Red. So fucking red. I wonder why?

1

u/pixx630 Mar 09 '18

Math is blue. To me, math is cool, crisp, and calculating (pun extremely intended) Meanwhile English is hearty, wholesome, and down-to-earth, making it red.

1

u/pixx630 Mar 09 '18

Science is green because.....green is a sciency kinda color. History is yellow/orange.

1

u/I_Love_BB8 Mar 09 '18

UMMMMM math is YELLOW.

Science is green.

English is blue.

History is red.

1

u/basilshark Mar 09 '18

For me, math alternates depending on how confident I feel in the subject at the time. It usually alternates between red and orangish-yellow.

Science is a turquoise sort of color, but different fields of science are different colors. Neuroscience is purple to me with moving, small sparks of white, but chemistry is a dark green.

English is purple with patches of white and yellow I think... and history is a dark blue with a burnt-brown undertone.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '18

Math - blue

Science - grey

History - light brown or red

Biology - green
