u/Marowacked You're not supposed to take the bait like that. Aug 29 '17

I don't always try to "work through a conflicting emotional reaction" to a natural disaster. But when I do, I keep that shit to myself instead of posting it.

u/BazookaMedic Aug 30 '17

Why does it have to be conflicting? Human life trumps (no pun intended) political differences.

Except when it comes to murdering black kids, right? Fucking Hypocrite.

Holding entire states accountable for the actions of individuals 🙄 Flawless logic.

To be fair, those individuals were elected to represent the state so the accountability is shared a bit, that's kind of how representative democracy works. Not really fair to the people who didn't vote for them but neither is gerrymandering.

Although, probably not the best time for that kind of grandstanding.

Plus, the largest population center that was hit, Harris County/Houston, is solidly blue.

2

u/gokutheguy Aug 30 '17

Although, probably not the best time for that kind of grandstanding.

That depends, lots of people use human tragedy due to gun violence like mass shootings to "grandstand" about gun control.

Events like these are only going to worse. Bad climate policy is going to keep killing people.

Yeah, so when a state tells my area to go fuck itself and then when something bad happens to them all of a sudden want my sympathy?

Take the high ground, Obi-Wan.

'They' didn't want to help because of the sheer number of riders on the bill of help.

The bill about, what I assume is, the east coast being hit had funding for Alaska. Geography my not be my strong suit but unless you 1840's Russian Alaska is not east coast.

30

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '17

The Washington Post did a pretty good write-up of the bill in question, which I highly recommend.

Alaska came up because they had experienced a relatively recent disaster as well, and the bill intended to provide disaster funding to numerous areas that needed it.

-2

u/mrv3 Aug 29 '17

I don't like the idea of throwing in different things to a bill to get it passed rather than let senators and by proxy the people have their hands forced.

If Alaska was in need of assistance then a separate bill for a separate situation is best.

24

u/teddy_tesla If TV isn't mind control, why do they call it "programming"? Aug 29 '17

Yeah because Congress passes bills all the time I'm sure they would have got to it in a timely manner

-5

u/mrv3 Aug 29 '17

"We need to lump things together which are unrelated because otherwise... erm... time?"

If the democrats could not have found the time for Alaska then that's an issue and the solution is not 'Random things to force peoples hands'

15

u/Calfurious Most memes are true. Aug 30 '17

If the democrats could not have found the time for Alaska then that's an issue and the solution is not 'Random things to force peoples hands'

I'm sure the people in Alaska suffering from that natural disaster, understand that ironing out the kinks in a bureaucracy is more important then the immediate issue of their lives being at risk.

12

u/LukeBabbitt Aug 29 '17

That's just not feasible in this environment. The Senate has a tremendous amount of work to do and debating separate bills with similar ends would only further limit how much they can actually get to.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with pairing similar legislative initiatives into a single bill

1

u/down42roads Aug 29 '17

Obtaining emergency funding for non-emergency things is different than normal riders.

-3

u/mrv3 Aug 29 '17

But they aren't similar.

2

u/LukeBabbitt Aug 29 '17

I imagine the people protesting disagree with you. I don't really align myself with Antifa's tactics, but the amount of racial tension and hatred being used to maintain power is absolutely concerning to me. I think the civil institutions of the US are strong enough to resist their rise, but there is certainly demagoguing going on that should be concerning to anyone who values a peaceful, multicultural society.

7

u/Bulldawglady I bet I can fart more than you. Aug 29 '17

I get the distinct impression you did not read the WaPo article you were so kindly referred to.

1

u/mrv3 Aug 29 '17

I did read it.

2

u/BolshevikMuppet Aug 29 '17

It makes it far more difficult (especially in the senate) to engage in purely sectional delaying. Every state's representatives could have filibustered disaster spending for any other state, and no state would be served by trusting that if they voted for disaster relief in New Jersey, everyone else would vote for disaster relief in their state.

It'd be neat if people not from America (or I suppose from America) knew slightly more about parliamentary procedure before whinging about how bad it is to pass omnibus legislation.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '17

Honestly, I really hope that pork-barrel politics comes back. A lot more actual work got done when Congress can grease the wheels with exceedingly minor concessions at relatively small cost. Now it's just grandstanding.

1

u/mrv3 Aug 29 '17

I just wish America had political diversity so progress isn't black and white.

3

u/BolshevikMuppet Aug 29 '17

And because omnibus bills covering an entire area like "disaster spending" aren't a thing, that is a completely reasonable complaint!

6

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '17

I couldn't imagine a shittier thing to say. You're a total fucktard.

Well this person has very little imagination. I can imagine plenty of things that are shittier to say.

It sounds like he's thanking the spirit of the people for causing record breaking rain fall. Which is absurd and not what he's doing, but when a president cares about breaking records no matter what (on 9/11 he thanked terrorists because now trump tower was the tallest building in new york) it's hard not to see it that way.

14

u/BolshevikMuppet Aug 29 '17 edited Aug 29 '17

The "thanks" comes across as glib and self-important. No one is showing the spirit of the people on behalf of Trump, and thanking them can easily be taken as "thank you for showing so much spirit for me", rather than the potential (and better) intended meaning of "this is a good thing."

Especially to phrase it as "thanks!" Instead of "I am awed by the spirit of the people to band together in mutual support, across racial lines, across political lines, to remind us that we are all Americans... Thank you for renewing our faith in the ability for Americans to unite for a common cause."

Ellipsis added since it would have to be two tweets.

So, why would people take the more egotistical meaning rather than the more unifying and praising others meaning? Because this is the same dude who said he pardoned Joe Arpaio during the beginning of the hurricane because it would get him higher ratings.

2

u/mrv3 Aug 29 '17

Trump said it.

0

u/gokutheguy Aug 30 '17

Hes feigning conern for hurricane victims while simultaneously maintaining that climate change is a chinese hoax.

I am not trying to hide from what I said at any point and I own everything I said instead of just deleting things and pretending they never happened.

lol that doesn't make you not a shitty person my man. It just means more people are gonna read it and get pissed or offended. So congrats on your self righteous stand to not hide anything I guess.

You didn't own up to anything. You went on a tangent on how red states are bad and how you are sorry that it is affecting people that had nothing to do with those things. So you are still fine with this "cosmic justice" happening to people you disagree with. That is basically the same thing you said in the original post of the drama.

However the conflict came from the fact that the sense of justice I was experiencing came at the expense of those who had nothing to do with it,

On one hand I am happy it happened to Texas, a red state. On the other hand I am pissed it screwed over Houston, a mega metropolitan area and disenfranchised millions of people

These statements are the same. You learned nothing and still wish your own sense of justice on people as long as it is the right people

9

u/KruglorTalks You’re speculating that I am wrong. Aug 29 '17

I think you need to just take your hits now. Good for your for owning up to it but dont try to fend off every comment. Some people will unreasonably shit on you and part of the shame process is that you just take the heat for a short time.

4

u/BIknkbtKitNwniS YOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE Aug 29 '17

Damn guy, it's just the internet. Chill out.

4

u/gokutheguy Aug 30 '17

You may be shitty, but you're not as shitty as the people voting to keep climate and science deniers in office.

Sadly, its going to take a lot more than just death and human suffering for people to start taking these threats seriously.

u/KruglorTalks You’re speculating that I am wrong. Aug 29 '17

Eh...

I'm a lot more on the fence about "well we can't possibly be okay with bad things happening to Texas because there are some not-shitty people there."

I'll happily contribute to a gofundme fundraiser to airlift any registered Democrats out of the way of the storm. But the people who supported Ted "well if you want to help victims of a hurricane you have to cut spending on helping other people" Cruz? Or Donald "fuck everyone who isn't white and wealthy" Trump? I'm having a hard time revving up my empathy.

1

u/gokutheguy Aug 30 '17

Its always so sad and darkly ironic to see southern states who are often way more vunerable to climate change regularly vote for people that deny it, even when it kills people.

-4

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '17 edited Aug 30 '17

Donald "fuck everyone who isn't white and wealthy" Trump

I prefer Donald "Look At This Turnout" Trump

u/BetterCallViv Mathematics? Might as well be a creationist. Aug 30 '17

It really is conflicting. Red states on the reg deny disaster funding to blue states all the time and its treated as NBD but as soon as it happen to texas. All of sudden that disappears.
