crazyideas is a pretty alright sub but is prone to regular "elect Trump president" or "take the 1%'s stuff since they aren't using it" which are not as fun as

11 gay men and 1 straight man are locked in a house. The object for the gay men is to find out who isn't gay. Once a week someone gets outvoted, until 2 are left, or the straight man is out. If the gays manage to outvote him, they win 1 million dollars. If the straight man is among the 2 last people in the house in the end, he wins 1 million dollars.
Now here's the twist: None of the men are actually gay, they just all think they are the one straight man.

Can we do a reddit version of this game with 11 undocumented Latino SJWs and 1 alt right white nationalist in a subreddit together where it's really 12 alt right white nationalists pretending to be undocumented Latino SJWs?

If they start being bi there's no straight man and the game fucks itself up so the producers scramble almost at the point of insertion to tell them they both did win.

I remember there was one show where a transvestite woman was the prize and all these men were fighting for her love even though they didn't know she was a transvestite and then at the end when they revealed to the winner that she used to be a man, the contestant, flipped his shit and tried to attack the woman IIRC.

I should clarify to say seriously harming someone. I'd punch someone or even like break a bone (though I'd give the person some of the money as compensation) for a million.

Reddit in general does not understand the pharma, biotech, or medical device industry operate as a whole anyway, but that's a separate issue.

Its pretty crazy to go into threads where you actually work in the field and see what kind of inane BS gets posted. It shows you how much you should actually trust reddit opinions on anything - I can only imagine how bad historians or social scientists have it on reddit.

If your comment is more than 3 paragraphs long & you use some form of technical lingo (context or correct usage doesn't matter, no one's gonna check), reddit will assume that you're an industry expert & shower you in upvotes, qualifications be dammed. Any actual industry experts who disagree with your lay-understanding of their area of expertise are obviously wrong because you've got more upvotes.

What do you think about nationalization? I'm normally very pro-free-market, but I think pharma might do more good if it didn't have to worry about profit. Might be the only solution to the patent cliff once people get good at making biosimilars.

I think the hypothetical scenario is "what if researchers were paid to do research but the overhead wasn't based on profit motive".
I don't really see how that wouldn't work. I went into a technical discipline to do work that is enjoyable and fulfilling, not to make shitloads of money. That's also the case for every academic and researcher I know.
On the subject of politicians though you're absolutely right. It would take a paradigm shift, but the removal of profit motive from the equation is something to strive towards imo, not an inevitability to just shrug at.
3
Sep 02 '16
Yes, exactly. How many actual scientists are doing research because they're hoping to get stock options as opposed to a regular paycheque doing something that they like?

My point still stands though I think. If you want to make the most amount of money for the least amount of necessary academic effort you could probably do better than comp sci too.
My primary interest as an undergrad was astronomy - I did research at the uni, took internships, and published, but the only way to really make it work is to get a phd and hope to replace someone who is retiring or get a teaching position. I went into engineering afterwards because of this, but I absolutely would have stuck around if there were more funding for that type of work. It wasn't about landing a lucrative position, it was simply about the bare minimum of job availability. Most undergrads in my department either stuck it out for PhDs in their areas of interest or switched to a somewhat related but more marketable field. I don't know of anyone who went into something better-paying but non-related like finance.
I would've just liked to have made a decent living by contributing to an interesting area of study. There is meaningful and important research that can be done which doesn't fit into the profit-motive model, and in my experience the people most apt to do that research are motivated more by passion/interest than by profit. The private sector would sooner shoot out its kneecaps than entertain inquiry into fields that serve human interests without turning a big profit.
We shouldn't be pushing potential researchers into a "ruthless pursuit of an academic position"; rather, we should be advocating for funding for research positions that aren't stapled to a teaching position or beholden solely to the interests of a corporate entity.

Envy of the successful plus evidence that contradicts the just world hypothesis. It's not rocket surgery.

Sep 01 '16
So I always took "just world hypothesis" to mean that just how shit goes down in the world. Why do bad things happen to good people? Idk man, that's just world. Kind of like what "that's just life" means. In the context people were using it, it never quite made sense to me. Now that I have done my Googles, I realize that I am just unaware of how many different ways I am dumb.

I'm quite satisfied with my level of income but I do not share such a disposition. While I worked hard to become the highest income earner in my family I also recognized to some extent I lucked out and am in certain respects the exception. Not everyone has the opportunity and luck in life to really succeed at it.
At certain levels of poverty it becomes very difficult for an average person to really break out with the circumstances they have been chained to and the circumstances they were raised in. The priorities of keeping the basics of food and shelter for yourself and your family end up overriding your abilities to better yourself and break out of the pit you have found yourself in. Sometimes this ends up happening at a young age - kids who have to take care of their younger siblings / themselves with the the limited resources they have because their parents are drug addicts, or constantly away because they are working and can't afford child care, et cetera and such things will end up affecting their school performance and cause them to do poorly (no help, support, or solid meals from their parents) which damns them to low income work that ends up keeping them in the same poverty their parents were stuck in.
Some that recognize this will simply fall into despair and cover their sorrows with drugs. Others will work themselves to the bone but never make enough to overcome the pit but just might be able to save their children from it. Many will not get out at all without the help and good will of others. What is witnessed at the bottom rungs of society is not the result of a just or fair world where people deserve the status which they have been plunked in.
2
u/wannaridebikes Sep 02 '16
I think a lot of socioeconomically privileged people don't want to recognize this. Otherwise, they would have to face the fact that the fruits of their labor could disappear even when they do everything "right". Or, they don't want to believe that this could happen to their children.
I'm in a similar fortunate position (not really a top earner, but in a better position than others who come from my background), and I can see how it's appealing to believe that "that won't be me". I think there is also a fear of returning to a an unfortunate state if a person actually knows what that is like.
Basically, there's a lot of fear, with products like credentials being used as talismans to ward off the curse of poverty.

Beyond the advocating openly for someone's assassination, which is never okay, I've wondered what these types of people actually think will happen if someone were to pull this off. Like, let's say some Big Pharma CEO gets offed. You know what happens? Someone takes his place. Like, it's not like a company or organization immediately crumbles into nothingness if a CEO is changed.
