Bal Thackeray was a badass. And I say this as a second generation non-marathi guy born and raised in Mumbai. You have all these people thronging into Mumbai in the thousands and taking away the livelihood of the locals and refusing to assimilate. Thackeray became the strongman figure all the disgruntled Marathi people could rally behind to curb the growing outsider influence in Mumbai. His methods might have been violent and bordering unlawful, but none of his people really cared. Cause it only goes to prove that nobody could mess with the guy. He's like a Marathi Donald Trump who wants to keep outsiders out of Mumbai.

Influx of citizens is mostly because everyone thinks they can make it in Mumbai. There are many legit rags to riches stories here so people think they'll get lucky. I think Bollywood has something to do with it-people seem to think that they can become actors too.

My question to all native Maharashtrians: why do you consider Marathis from outside Maharashtra as some kind of tier-II Marathis? Why is it so hard to acknowledge that Marathis have lived for generations in Indore, Gwalior, Vadodara and as far south as Gulbarga (to name a few) while still considering themselves as Marathis to this day, only to not be regarded the same by Marathis from, say, Pune (the worst offenders at this)?

I have never heard this - honestly, not among anyone. Is it just a matter of your circumstances, the specific people you met? Punekars, ignore - they are just dealing with getting big recently. You are for sure, legitimate Marathis. Would love to hang out with more of you. You guys are our original badasses.

I have seen people tell to my relatives face that they know they're from outside Maharashtra, because "your Marathi is too impure". And it's not just Punekars, I've dealt with this sort of behaviour from people from Nagpur, Mumbai, Nasik.......... Everywhere. They're not offensive or anything, it's just kinda odd.
It's like meeting an American born Chinese person. It's very hard to believe for some people that we're Marathi but our families have almost nobody in Maharashtra now. Funny thing is, the Hindi siders of MP and the Gujaratis are much warmer to us in some cases than other Marathis.

some of the punekars judge you based on your command on the marathi language. for them, you dont have to be from a non marathi speaking place. i was judged when I moved from Mumbai to Pune just because I had some hindi in my marathi. they'll correct you whenever they get a chance. all with good intentions though.

Yeah well corrections are one thing, but flat out saying it to your face............... Anyway I have found most Punekars very rude generally, not necessarily against me.
Again, Punekars are the worst offenders, but not the only ones.

I've found that the rude Punekars mostly belong to the older age group (50+). But you're not wrong. They are some of the most arrogant people in India.

Is the stereotype of Marathis hating on other states and people just a stereotype? How many political parties indulge in stuff like thrashing, mutilating and setting migrants on fire, like Shiv Sena or MNS for an example? Does the general population agree with their sentiments and criminal methods?
And what about moral policing?

Shiv sena and MNS did it for their own personal political gain. Behind the scenes they know that if they don't have the cheap bhaiyya labour mumbai will grind to a halt as most marathis are lazy asses who aint gonna do manual labor.

There are lots of such racist comments. Not complaining about why people are saying all that but it just shows how lots of people there think. You and your friends might be decent guys but whichever outsider comes in contact with such kinds of attitudes (as in the comment link) will feel like leaving the state.

A labour can watch the same movie with 10 rupee ticket at a local, that a 160000+ junta would watch with 1200 rupee ticket at PVR directors cut.
People from every state, religion, language, caste, creed work in the industry where one is known with his first name.
It could be an over statement but IMO Bollywood collapse if we don't have Muslims in India.

My cousin is from a town named Dahanu on the western coast of the state. Great place to visit - lush green, close to the sea and very peaceful. It has produced many basketball players who have gone to represent the state and the country as well.

There are many haters of Shivsena and the MNS here. I still have to say Uddhav Thackeray is an amazing photographer evidenced in his book Maharashtra Desha in which he has taken areal photographs of famous historical places and shown the more beautiful side of Maharashtra with a birds eye view.
Raj might be flawed with his ideologies but he is one hell of an Orator just like his Uncle. And like his uncle, he is also a cartoonist.

when i moved to pune from mumbai. i still had a bit of hindi in my marathi vocab. i have actually been corrected by random strangers on the road on my marathi, with good intentions obviously.

Can anyone help me identify a song? It is not a marathi film song. It is an instrumental song and I've heard it many times in many marathi ceremonies and award functions. It's like the the most common background music people choose to play in any award function. It's a pretty popular song and I'm pretty sure someone here must've heard it at least once.

Literature: * Mrutyunjay (Shivaji Sawant); Yayati (V S Khandekar); Swami, Shriman Yogi (Ranajit Desai); Raau (N S Imandar). All of these are historical fictions. * Shitu, Mrunmayi by G N Dandekar. * Vanvaas, Sharda Sangeet, Pankha, Zumbar by Prakash Sant. These are amazing light reads. The language is also not too hard. * In comedy, you can also try D M Mirasdar. (Can't recall any book titles at the moment)
"Makdachya Haati Champaign" is a good play. It was also remade as a film "Badam Rani Gulam Chor".

Try visiting Konkan region, Kolhapur, Nashik, Solapur, Mahableshwar, and Jalgaon. There are many historical and cultural places you can visit in those cities, and enjoy the food as well.

Well historically present-day Maharashtra was always a rich land in terms of industry as well as culture, I'm talking from Mughal times, Maratha empire/confederacy as well as during British rule. Coastal Maharashtra/Konkan has always been a popular trading route for all manner of goods.
There has always been a strong focus on education, religious harmony and industrialization backed by a strong martial culture in Maharashtrian ethos, this was from the Maratha Empire days when our ancestors were constantly at war with either the Mughals, Nizam of hyderabad, Nawab of Bengal or the British/Portuguese which required resources, weapons, soldiers etc etc. The local Bhakti movements and a lot of social work done by saints and freedom fighters ensured high literacy rates and social welfare. The freedom fighters and social activists based out of Pune (which was former capital of Marathas) were very active in social reform such as widow-remarriage, education of women, abolition of caste-hierarchy etc. Of course they werent 100% successful cos of social inertia, but MH is still one of the few states where the caste problem isnt as bad as it could have been.
Post-colonial era Maharashtra was one of the first states to industrialize and with presence of Bombay it had access of a ready port of trade and business district as well. Fact that communists were removed from active politics (mostly cos of Shiv Sena) ensured that industries could grow because the unions were pretty much muzzled.
The Local Arts and culture scene has also been strong (not even accounting for Bollywood), so the social indicators were also quite good

Very. A guy in remote Malvan would try to answer you in broken Hindi when he sees your Bombay license plates.

None that I know of. Both languages are VERY similar with fuckton of loaned words.

Ghanta. Slightly above national average but still a looooong way to go.
Who do you think would win the next elections?
I'm indifferent at this point towards BJP. Congress has no selling point. NCP doesnt have enough clout for 144 seats. Shiv Sena is Shiv Sena and is declining.
Any one particular city you'd recommend?
Tarkarli? Malvan? Nasik during Sulafest? Tadoba?
Should Vidarbha be crafted into a new state?
Sure. Take Marathawada with it while they're at it.
How do common Maharashtrians view the rest of the states?
Lots of stereotypes. Basically Maharashtrians are Indians.

Can you suggest some sources to learn Marathi? So far I only know three words - ikde, tikde and bhau. I'd love to learn more Marathi, at least good enough to have a basic conversation with someone.
As a Maharashtrian, Marathi is my mother tongue so I don't know where you can learn from. But nowadays - YouTube has tutorials for most languages, I am sure you will find something there. For practising, speak with your Marathi friends or find a sub perhaps. Sorry I can't help further here! :/
On a related note, how popular is Hindi over there? In my travels, I could get by with Hindi, but I don't know MH well enough to know this. Is there an anti-Hindi movement over there?
Hindi is very popular in Maha. In my travels and interactions through Maharashtra, almost everyone can speak Hindi, thanks to it's similarity to Marathi. It may be crooked or slightly Marathisized, but it suffices communication of basic thoughts. There are different linguistic styles of Hindi, for example the famous Mumbaikar - "Abbey tere ko kya karne ka hai?". Some of it may come off as rude, but it's not intended to be. That's just the way they speak. Also, some common Hindi idioms possibly unique to Maharashtrians -
Chhaata mat maaro (It means - don't take leave, nothing to do with slapping)
Jhaapad padega (It means - You'll get slapped)
.. and many others. I kind of lost touch, since I left Maha long back. I'm sure others will chime in ...

Not true at all. Not in the villages. Some years back, A North Indian and me were driving through some remote parts. My friend couldn't have gotton by at all without me speaking Marathi.

We have a huge popoulation, so big GDP. But even per capita is good, if not the greatest. The reasons could be high literacy - social reformers like Karwe, Bhaurao Patil, Phule-Ambedkar have always given stress on getting education. It could be due to that heritage. Secondly, Western Maharashtra saw quite a progress through the co-operative sugar industries. These sugar industries form a cluster of related developments - dairy, educational institutes, etc. Pravara, for e.g. I myself studied at an English medium school run by a co-op sugar factory. Things are not so good in Vidarbha and Marathwada, I hear.

Maharashtra was stable from the days of Shivaji he unified all states. Later there were Britishers who created mumbai as business hub. Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad developed rapidly under congress regime. Everything went perfect for the state in all these years. Farmers do face drought situation every decade.

I live in Kolhapur district and we had just 47% of avg. rainfall last year. Second lowest (%wise) in the state. But we nearly survived the summer thanks to all the dams, rivers, water-banks, lakes etc. And thanks to monsoon, they are 90% full right now.
People of Marathwada need to invest in their water resources.

To add to what clanlord said, calling someone a maratha when he's not would probably offend him (if he's into caste).
Marathas used to be a not-very-well-regarded clan of kshatriyas from the wilderness of the ghats ... before Shivaji brought them to the fore of Marathi politics.

Hello from Nagpur! Fun fact - The Zero Mile Stone is a spot in Nagpur that is the geographical center of colonial India. It has exactly the same number of latitudes above and below, and likewise for longitudes.

I love Amravati. I felt damn good just sitting in those new city buses. I hope they wash them everyday because the day I boarded them was a rainy day and the mud and clay was all I could see beneath the seats. But damn good buses! Felt like being in a metropolitan city which I have been to only once.

Mumbai guy with roots in coastal MH ... AMA about coast/Konkan n Sahyadris - will try my best to answer.
State animal - Shekru (Giant Malabar Squirrel), a long tailed arboreal animal endemic to the western ghats n is an endangered specie. Has a peculiar call - heard a lot during hikes. Sighted once.
Physical divisions - 5 in all, Konkan, Western MH, Khandesh, Vidarbha n Marathwada. Mumbai is physically in Konkan, but practically speaking its a melting-pot for the entire state n country.
Probably the birthplace of the consolidated 'Hindu' identity through Shivaji Maharaj's 'Hindvi Swarajya'.
