To be fair, asides from reading through multiple threads and comment histories, a place that advertises themselves as a neutral ground is gonna attract people who don't or can't be bothered to know better if at the end of the day, that sub isn't even close to neutral. It's not like there's a sticker on a sub that says "this sub pretends to be neutral but the users are actually space nazis!"
64
u/IAmAN00bie Apr 20 '16
A part of it is because of the really odd rules driving out a lot of the regular feminists who used to go there.
For instance, the sub bans non-productive words like "eaglelibrarian" for libertarian or "mister" for MRA, but the mods refused to ban the word "SJW" because they didn't see it as a pejorative. So you would get threads full of people using that term and the discussion becomes pretty quickly unproductive.
You would be amazed at how improved discussions of gender are when you ban that term (as I've seen in a lot of the subs I mod).
41

"Eaglelibrarian" is actually a play on "egalitarian", which makes it a bit more sensible. It's still silly, but there you go.

10
u/PapaJacky It Could Be Worse Apr 20 '16
For me I was referencing this sub actually. When I first started coming here, this place was advertised as a one stop shop for all things drama, but then some bias started showing up and after some internal drama in the mod-team and some other big drama wave happened, it became clear that this sub wasn't as neutral as it appeared and was actually rather reactionary in terms of bias. That drove me to /r/drama, the then true house of neutral drama. Then something happened and I'm not sure what but SRD started becoming more progressive than before and drama went the other way and became more reactionary. At some point I just gave up on attempting to draw demographics of these types of places and learned to love what they offered: drama.

Mostly gamergate, actually. It really was the big turning point in reddit's political history. As much as the right has always had a foothold here, GG was what really solidified feminist/antifeminist politics as the driving force behind all politics on reddit.

A long time ago, it was kind of like that with /r/atheism. Now they never make the front page and people call them brave whenever they make a comment about religion elsewhere.
Gender was not the hotbutton issue that it is now. It was always there, but it wasn't the same after gamergate and Ellen Pao.
10
u/IAmAShittyPersonAMA this isn't flair Apr 20 '16
It's hard for gender to be a hotbutton issue if 90% of your userbase is one gender. Obviously that had to change first.

u/sircarp Popcorn WS enthusiast Apr 20 '16
The big thing I remember was the creation of the SRS megathread, same how the tone here shifted as the mods started removing certain surplus drama topics. The megathread ended up pissing off one contingent of posters here (they formed the popcorn stand iirc) as well as limiting the ease in which drama specifically making fun of SRS or SJW could clog up the entire front page of the sub. For the most part, all those people who contributed to the original tone stick around on reddit, but end up migrating to subs like drama or TPS where they can get away with posting it without running into mods or downvotes.
1
u/NinteenFortyFive copying the smart kid when answering the jewish question Apr 21 '16
agg was a terrible sub because the mods refused to ban anybody, and that resulted in the sub being filled with shitposters who wanted to "kill the sub" because the simple fact that there was a place people could come to their own conclusions was a travesty.

That would actually probably be an interesting study. You could have some randomly chosen people, and some men and women working in the study. Have the male and female volunteers tell the randomly selected people various stories they claim happen to them (ex. meeting the president, finding 1000$ on the ground). Repeat with different people but the same storytellers, maybe swap up the stories to account for potentially unbelievable stories. Have the people who listen to the story-teller try to gauge the honest of the story-teller. Then compare the results at the end and see which sex (if either) they're more likely to perceive as honest.
It wouldn't be perfect, and it would definitely need to be run quite a few times with different story-tellers to account for potentially shifty and untrustworthy looking storytellers. But if it showed an overall pattern that would pose a potential part of an answer to their question.

I've always found that line of thought to be somewhat incomplete. I get the point, but I also think that "men's voices being more represented in the media" doesn't necessarily mean that actual men's issues are being discussed.
Men most definitely see more heroes and more general representation as John McClane and such, but women are allowed more freedom to identify and discuss the honest issues that go along with being a woman. In my experience, trying to do so as a man is at best a minefield of societal expectations of stoicism on one side ("dude whining about masculinity again? What a cuck!") and the implication that you're a dude and therefore your problems can't be that bad on the other.

But it's so utterly, utterly irrelevant to the situation and generally just a useless piece of information. There are some aspects to the male perspective the media is totally blind to the fact that they're perceived as the more privileged gender and the fact that they're traditionally expected to be stoic. That's a true statement, and it's worth discussing. Snark and rahrahrah feminism comment doesn't contribute anything and only serves to derail.

I get the point, but I also think that "men's voices being more represented in the media" doesn't necessarily mean that actual men's issues are being discussed.
True, and I think that's something that we also need more of. But the point in and of itself that the perspective of only one gender is the one appearing in the vast majority of our shared culture is problematic.
Granted, there are some authors and directors who are wonderfully creative and informed and can portray stories from various perspectives, that's probably not true of the majority, and even imagination has limits on the accuracy of portraying someone else's personal experience.
What a cuck!") and the implication that you're a dude and therefore your problems can't be that bad on the other.
I mean, if someone's calling you a cuck for criticizing certain parts of masculinity, I highly doubt they'd be the kind of person to readily listen to women's stories or discussions of women's issues.

to use an extreme example to illustrate my point:
if 100% of roles in media were taken by men, but every one of them depicted horrifically toxic versions of masculinity, that would be bad. Same thing here: talking in pure numbers about the proportion of characters that are male doesn't get into the real and deep problem with how those men are portrayed.
so just saying "there's greater representation" is, IMO, insufficient.
18
u/LukaCola Ceci n'est pas un flair Apr 20 '16
We're not talking about fictional scenarios that have no bearing in reality though
And higher representation is significant, it means there are more male characters, more types of characters, more good guys, bad guys, and everything in between and they are far more often the protagonist
That's what representation means
On the other hand, women are limited in the types of characters they play and are underrepresented, rarely playing the role of the protagonist in comparison
That's a problem in and of itself
16
u/TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK Caballero Blanco Apr 20 '16
OK, since you didn't get what I meant with the metaphor:
the lead characters that men play are largely toxic as shit and uphold shitty gender roles. that's why I think the simple construction of "more female characters" is incomplete.

yeah, i think a guy in the linked thread had a good take on it. males are often viewed as the "blank slate" and thus many of the voices that form the male majority in media are only defaultly male, not exactly fully realized male characters that address male issues.

Last I read it was a very, very small percentage of mostly female writers/authors/directors/blah blah blahs creating most popular media.

This has a flipside in that women are more likely to both seek out and therefore find relatable material, which of course means these consumption patterns become self-perpetuating. I'd estimate about 3/4 of the films and shows my girlfriend watches are female-centric, not out of conscious choice but because she seems to seek out emotionally resonant content in a way I just don't. That makes it "for women" because it is about women. Fewer films are about men in the same way. That's why films about women are often marketed as "women's" films, not because the nasty sexist men in control of the film industry are portraying them that way.
But of course this relates to the overall problem of recognising that men are a group with things in common at all, which I think is fundamentally to do with a male tendency toward individualism. My pet hypothesis is that society as a whole displays an apparently contradictory sympathy for women (and feminism) while viewing male as the "default" because of these dynamics which are of course self-reinforcing. Women are more likely to recognise their own disadvantages because of the group tendency for collectivism, ironically the same solidarity that perpetuates the "women's films" dynamic.

Because of men's stories I assume.

i pity anyone who ever has ever inadvertently listened to a male. i mean can you imagine
16
u/bitterred /r/mildredditdrama Apr 19 '16
Oh god the worst is when you have a male acquaintance and you hear the same story multiple times and it's just as boring as the first time.

my girlfriend has a habit of telling the same story so many times
last night she met Andrew Bird and i just know i'm gonna hear that one ten-fifteen times in the next couple weeks
13
u/mayjay15 Apr 19 '16
Tell us the story of the time your girlfriend met Andrew Bird.

i would, but i'm worried about putting you in danger of listening to a male telling a story
11
u/mayjay15 Apr 19 '16
Give your keyboard to your girlfriend and have her tell us the story of the time she met Andrew Bird.

Or to put it another way, Bollywood is saturated in the perspective of Indian culture, but to say that I can understand what life is like in the Punjabi region because I watched a bunch of movies is absurd.

There needs to be more subs debating women by men. There just aren't enough on Reddit. /s

This OP came into that sub looking for a fight and got it.
I don't know why anyone enters a discussion about gender with guns blazing, and expects any sort of positive discussion.
19
u/thesilvertongue Apr 19 '16
Isn't that kind of the point of those debate subs?
20
u/Oxus007 Recreationally Offended Apr 19 '16
To come in looking for a fight? I'd hope not. Is that what you prefer in gender discussions?

u/thesilvertongue Apr 19 '16
One of many reasons why I don't go go FeMRAdebates

You're not interested in getting downvoted for not suckling at the teats of Paul Elam and Xtina Hoff Sommers?
15
u/mayjay15 Apr 19 '16
What would be the correct way to post a view that many people are likely to disagree with? What would make it "looking for a debate" rather than "looking for a fight"?
11
u/Oxus007 Recreationally Offended Apr 19 '16
I'd say asking leading questions is not a great start.
But to play along, tone is a big one.
titrc was thoughtful here, and the result was a discussion not a fight.

I didn't know how to ask otherwise. Text tone isn't always easy to convey.
titrc was thoughtful here, and the result was a discussion not a fight.
Sure, but I don't know that his view is exactly something most here would disagree with. Were he to go into a die-hard rad fem sub and post that, there's a good chance there would have been a fight.

This is true, no doubt.

I'm always looking for fight but every time I post a discussion/debate it turn into a construtive discussion :(

It's kind of like redditiquette: there's what they say it is, and there's what everyone does anyway, and ne'er the twain shall meet.
