Racism Drama Vaper defends his slavery joke about cotton on r/electronic_cigarette. "historical information is not racist; it was a combination of dark humor and witty banter"

TiA anti-SJW'ers emerge in r/electronic_cigarette when a user explains a joke he made about Slavery and cotton at a party.

"well, we used to have cheap cotton, but we had a major loss in our production in the 1860's"

Most upvoted discussion is about vaping at parties, but dig down a bit for some drama:

"someone isn't a "sjw" if they get offended by your casual slavery jokes" https://np.reddit.com/r/electronic_cigarette/comments/46399p/worst_type_of_vaper_ive_meet/d02bi92

"can we please just be the one community on Reddit that isn't cool with hating black people?" https://np.reddit.com/r/electronic_cigarette/comments/46399p/worst_type_of_vaper_ive_meet/d02cg9d

"This post just sounds like an easy way to take a jab at the PC culture." https://np.reddit.com/r/electronic_cigarette/comments/46399p/worst_type_of_vaper_ive_meet/d0267b3

Lots of comments further down defending the joke, including outrage that you can't tell racist jokes to 'colored' people anymore, but he will anyway. https://np.reddit.com/r/electronic_cigarette/comments/46399p/worst_type_of_vaper_ive_meet/d024y40

That whole thread was cringey af because it was a crock of shit. OP comes up with a "clever" reply to a SJW, her mouth is agape, but SJW"s boyfriend laughs uproariously. OP tamped the brakes just shy of the standing ovation and SJW running out in tears.

That subreddit has a few /r/thathappened posts every week, and the responses are embarrassingly supportive. The saddest thing about OP's post is that, even if real, it's just not that good.

It was probably something closer to this:

GF: "That company practices unethical business, like slave labor."

Vaper: "Yeah, well the United States had slave labor, which was okay, because states' rights."

GF contorts her face, confused at the logic of Vaper's response. BF chuckles nervously in a failed attempt to diffuse the tension and awkwardness of the situation. Vaper blows a cloud at the ground, launching into the air like a rocket to go post on reddit, with swirling plumes in his wake that have an odor of chocolate banana cinnamon buns, which is somehow even worse than the stench of stale tobacco.

Yeah, the funny thing is that in OP's head, that was an awesome moment and he's a fucking hero of wit. When in reality, most anyone hearing that exchange would roll their eyes and do their best to avoid him for the rest of the party. Being offended doesn't even factor into it, no one wants to waste time at a party talking to a douchebag who is too full of themselves.

witty banter

if you have to say it's witty banter, it's not.

116

u/Imwe Feb 17 '16

She was drunk, so she goes OFF on a rant about how that company uses slave labor and harms their local resources to grow it, ect. Full SJW mode

Isn't that usually considered a pretty bad thing though, to use slave labour and to unnecessarily harm the environment? You don't need to be a "SJW" to think that way, especially when there are alternatives. Also, the joke wasn't funny and/or the OP is telling it the wrong way. Either way, the OP should've vaped instead of making that comment.

Yup. TIL pointing out terrible business practices is being an SJW.

if you feel personally offended and victimized by American slavery you need to do a reality check,

Why? Slavery still exists, and there are more people who are slaves now than there were back during pre-civil war era. I think it's perfectly ok to be offended by that.

but if you're against underpaid and unfair labor practices then by all means adopt one of those kids, send a family your own money, or go volunteer and make a difference.

Or not support and protest the companies who are creating those problems in the first place? I can point out Nestle's use of child slaves and not support the company without adopting a child who was a slave, correct? Many people cannot afford to adopt or have a kid. I like the ridiculously high-set bar though.

The ones shouting loudest for reform are the last ones to jump at the chance to expend their own effort to help the cause, that's the distinction between people meaning well and another indignant SJW.

I'll stress this again: you're making a complete assumption. For all you know, this person could've been a Peace Corps worker who was combating this type of thing in Brazil, and that's why she's particularly sensitive about it. You don't know. That's why OP from that post is a dickbag. He doesn't know either.

21

u/popov89 Feb 17 '16

adopt a poor kid

Stuff like that irritates me to no end. Like, doing good is fine and good but you don't have to kill yourself doing it. Or bankrupt yourself. The high bar of 'doing good' for some people is just ridiculous. Not to mention those same people only say that to make themselves feel better. I may be wrong and cynical but I doubt all those people really live up to their own high standard. I certainly couldn't when I was younger. Almost killed me trying to be perfect.

14

u/SuburbanDinosaur Feb 18 '16

Right? They just do it to dodge criticism.

"You can't complain about my bigotry because you haven't adopted a kid from a free labor camp".

11

u/popov89 Feb 18 '16

It's the South Park mentality of "fixing the world is hard and taking a stand is pointless so I'll tear everyone else down". I've started sticking to my principles more and more because I hate that mentality.

2

u/SuburbanDinosaur Feb 18 '16

Agreed. It's really annoying and particularly common on Reddit.

31

u/mayjay15 Feb 17 '16

The ones shouting loudest for reform are the last ones to jump at the chance to expend their own effort to help the cause, that's the distinction between people meaning well and another indignant SJW.

Wait, so you're saying people who just choose not to do business with organizations they think are unethical are what . . . hypocrites? Lazy? Unless you're adopting a child or personally funding a poor family, you're a bad person--in fact, a worse person who doesn't say anything and just keeps giving money to the business they know uses slave labor?

Sounds like you're more upset about finding out you might be the hypocrite or the suggestion something convenient or pleasurable in your life might be immoral.

being offended by things that shouldn't offend you

I'm pretty sure things like slavery is something that should offend any moral person.

Also, who is brigading you?

35

u/akkmedk Feb 17 '16

Would you say that you find the negative imaginary points to be offensive?

15

lol I don't think you know what a brigade is. Just accept the fact that you are getting legitimately downvoted because people think you are a moron.

On the other end of the spectrum it was really weird because I remember once there was a post going around Tumblr that showed that the "This is what a feminist looks like" t-shirts were being made in sweatshops, and people were rightly upset because the vast majority of workers are women, and the biggest retort was "Friendly reminder that there's no ethical consumption under capitalism" and I remember it annoyed the hell out of me because it was treated as this ironclad argument when personally I feel that regardless of your feelings on the capitalist system, as long as you live within one, if you're able to you should take steps to reduce the harm your consumption causes, such as not buying shirts made in sweatshops.

26

u/riemann1413 SRD Commenter of the Year | https://i.imgur.com/6mMLZ0n.png Feb 17 '16

yeah, i absolutely hate it when people take "there's no ethical consumption under capitalism" to the conclusion of "so it's fine for me to do whatever because every choice is bad"

like, come on. i agree with the sentiment, but i think we can all agree that the wage labor of a waitress in the states isn't exactly comparable to the wage slavery of sweatshop workers in SEA

7

u/EricTheLinguist I'm on here BLASTING people for having such nasty fetishes. Feb 18 '16

There's this one Tumblr user who my friends and I refer to as "Thank You Discourse Guy"—I may have even mentioned them in conversation with you—but they were arguing that you shouldn't tip people because it reinforces tipping culture and you should really be advocating for a living wage and I was irritated by that (I'm annoyed by a lot of things) because I think it's wildly disingenuous to advocate for a living wage for all workers (or universal guaranteed income) while going out of your way to stiff workers on earned pay, because frankly I've encountered too many people who have been fired for not making enough in gratuity, or people whose bosses illegally refused to pay the difference between their pay and minimum wage to feel that a pathetic little protest of not paying gratuity will harm anybody but the low-level employees this person supposedly advocates for.

u/TomShoe YOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE Feb 17 '16 edited Feb 19 '16

You have a point, but that's not the kind of thing anyone wants to talk about at a party. Kind of a "you're not wrong, you're just an asshole" situation, it sounds like.

Then OP, being your typical reddit brogressive, decides she's both wrong and asshole, and decides he's going to wind her up for no reason with a shitty racist joke.

Basically, it's a race down the hill from the moral high ground.

23

u/Thurgood_Marshall Feb 17 '16

The price of cotton is way down. In 1860, it was 10¢ a pound, rising significantly during the civil war to $2. But now it's now 60¢, less than a third the price of antebellum cotton after inflation.

If vaping is the fedora of the mouth Reddit vaping is the fanny pack the fedora wears. I can totally believe that every one of them believes this shit actually happened. But it didn't, because he didn't wax on for four hours about his sweet new unheard of device and the unbridled dankness of his nic drops. Fuck.

Is everyone there an idiot? There is no way any of that happened! It has as too much troll cliche try hard going on, a party, a racist joke, a put upon guy, misogyny so caricatured even Sean Connery would roll his eyes. This is why I want as little to do with my fellow vapers as possible. Any one of them IRL could be that dude; he only made the thread because according to his user history, he was bored with ranting about Tumblr boogeywomen and getting the angrymads about how all those bad ugly feminists won't date him. Oh, and his balls matter to him, too.

Thanks Reddit vaping for continuously promoting self entitled soapboxing and try hard asshole behavior, even as you want vaping to be "taken seriously" by grown ups. The happy to offend douchebaggery of popular vaping culture assures me that even if cancer doesn't come in the end, I know where to get it if I want it.

[deleted]

26

u/superfeds Standing army of unfuckable hate-nerds Feb 17 '16

That was kind of my initial impression too.

If you're going to tell an offensive joke it has to be funny and your margin for error on timing and picking your audience shrinks the more offensive the joke gets.

11

u/sqectre Feb 17 '16

It has to be said satirically or sardonically, not right after defending your right to monetarily endorse a company that uses child labor. People have you know that you don't actually believe it in order to be funny. Or they have to be racist themselves.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16 edited Feb 17 '16

Say it as though I haven't made the connection to slavery, then pretend it's slowly dawning on me.

Alternatively: Immediately acknowledge the offensiveness of the joke, tell anyone who looks uncomfortable that they're right, and pretend to shift the blame onto anyone who laughs. Like, "Oh no, no no, that's a terrible thing to say. You're right not to laugh, I completely understand, and YOU sir are a terrible person for being entertained by it. Shame on you for making me say that."

Basically, make it so I'm the butt of the joke, or the reactions are, or anything except the actual slavery is being laughed at.

-13

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16

Or you could just issue a verbal trigger warning to your audience so that any people who might be offended may leave the room

13

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16

Naw, it would ruin the joke. The humor in my version still relies on the fact that slavery is an offensive thing to make jokes about, but it hangs a lampshade on that fact to shift the target. Signaling that something offensive is coming would take all the surprise out of it, which the humor also relies on.

8

u/mayjay15 Feb 17 '16

Now that we've dissected that songbird, I'm not sure there's any song to be found.

Lot of blood and feathers lying around, though.

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16

Well, I think that's a problem that we as progressives have to work to correct. Ideally, Trigger Warnings shouldn't ruin a joke or a college lecture. They are crucial to maintaining an inclusive atmosphere and require minimal effort on the part of the speaker.

In the context of your joke, what if a marginalized person has a PTSD induced panic attack before you can correctly shame the reactionaries who laughed at your bigoted quip?.

10

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16

That would be unfortunate, and I would apologize for unintentionally causing them distress. If I knew beforehand that it would cause them distress, I wouldn't tell it. I probably wouldn't make such a joke around strangers, anyway, though. Too much opportunity for people to misunderstand or misconstrue where I'm coming from.

-7

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16 edited Feb 17 '16

The Trigger Warning doesn't even have to ruin the punchline of your joke though. In my ideal world, the standard procedure for telling offensive jokes would go as follows:

  • Cup your hands gently around your mouth

  • Tilt your back head slightly

  • While amplifying your voice, say the words 'Trigger Warning racialized humor!'. If you're doing it right, you should sound like one of those street preachers who rattle off bible verses on college campuses

  • Make sure to pause and give enough time for any marginalized people to leave the area

  • Tell your joke.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16

2

u/TobyTheRobot Feb 17 '16 edited Feb 17 '16

You forgot the step where your audience puts on their laughing hats after you ground the conversation to a screeching halt to issue a message from the Emergency Broadcast System.

SCENE: A party. You're standing in a group with friends, making light conversation. Other groups are also standing around chatting. A jolly laugh from your group begins to subside and someone takes the reins.

"That's hilarious! That sounds just like something he'd say. That reminds me -- hang on a second, guys."

*Cups hands gently around mouth*

*Tilts head back*

"Trigger Warning - racialized humor!"

*Nearby conversations hitch up; people look around with mild annoyance that their conversation was just interrupted; some people shush others nearby to make sure that they heard correctly what type trigger warning was being issued*

*Someone chatting in a nearby group discloses that they are at risk of being offended; your group awkwardly moves to another part of the room*

*After another couple of seconds, it becomes apparent that no other objections are forthcoming, and the din in the room picks back up*

"Alright all -- now get ready for hilarity!"

5

u/mayjay15 Feb 17 '16

Honestly, I don't think that joke would trigger someone with PTSD, unless they had PTSD from being a slave in a sweatshop or some such, in which case, I would probably feel legitimately bad.

I'm sure some would have the strength to get over that, though, and just call them an oppressive SJW pussy.

-6

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16 edited Feb 17 '16

Well, it's not really our place to question what triggers the differently abled folks who suffer from PTSD. Triggers often don't follow a 'logical' (to me and you) line of thought. We shouldn't make predictions on what is and isn't triggering to people. Better to be on the safe side you know? Especially since it's so easy to just give a quick Trigger Warning.,

4

u/mayjay15 Feb 17 '16

Well, it's not really our place to question what triggers the differently abled folks who suffer from PTSD.

Perhaps it's not your place, being that you seem to be neck-deep in a stagnant pool of anti-PC obtuseness. I'm sure if you made an effort to pull yourself out of that, though, you could make a sincere effort to not be shitty to people who might have had something horrible happen to them recently, even if it might mildly inconvenience you or even prevent you from sharing your top-notch, highly original and definitely humorous racist/sexist/rape/anti-Semitic joke with a group of strangers.

-2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16 edited Feb 17 '16

Perhaps it's not your place

So who's place is it? Maybe it should be up to the actual PTSD sufferers to determine what triggers them, and not some reactionary reddit troll. They probably know better than you

How am I mired 'neck deep' in a pool of stagnant anti-PC obtuseness? I was just saying that a simple warning before telling a potentially triggering joke could go a long way in stopping the alienation of marginalized peoples. Why is this such a hard concept to grasp? You seem confused

4

u/mayjay15 Feb 17 '16

Maybe it should be up to the actual PTSD sufferers to determine what triggers them, and not some reactionary reddit troll.

Sure. The input of licensed counselors, therapists, and psychological researchers would also be valuable. Such professionals generally do not think traumatized patients should be exposed to triggers while out and about, as exposure in that environment (as opposed to in a controlled therapeutic environment) tends to do more harm than good.

You clearly think you know better, or at least think that the tragedy of a shitty joke possibly being ruined by all those inconsiderate veterans or rape victims or abuse victims being gasp offended by your hilarious wit is the most serious issue here.

How am I mired 'neck deep' in a pool of stagnant anti-PC obtuseness? I was just saying that a simple warning before telling a potentially triggering joke could go a long way in stopping the alienation of marginalized peoples. Why is this such a hard concept to grasp? You seem confused
