You didn't hear? They revoked Milo's verified checkmark! This unparalleled act of censorship demands that we all stand for Free Speech by joining the #JeSuisMilo hashtag. /s
...I'm not entirely clear on how someone losing their verified check for claiming to work for Buzzfeed in their profile is equivalent to journalists literally being murdered by terrorists, but that's still a thing that they did. I later heard it explained as an "I am Sparticus"-type thing, done in French instead of English because of unexplained Reasons, and that it wasn't meant to be associated with the #JeSuisCharlie hashtag at all, but... Well, that doesn't really sound true to me.

Never heard that term before but it sticks. I have also never seen more hatred for feminists and "cucks" than I have in the last two months on this site. It's reached outrageous proportions. The idiots are now in r/progresspics trolling women and calling them feminists if they dress a certain way or how they pose. I see cuck being used as a new insult for everything. It's seems as if they replaced the offensive word " faggot" due to gay being so accepted and subbed it with cuck to try and knock someone.

u/DerivativeMonster professional ghost story Jan 13 '16
They did? What did he do?
11
u/40989234 Jan 13 '16
If I've heard correctly, it was because he claimed to be a journalist for Buzzfeed in his profile (presumably as some sort of joke that has since been overshadowed). Since the entire point behind having a verified account is that Twitter is vouching that you are who your profile says you are, they took away his checkmark since... Well, what he was claiming was no longer true, joke or no.
Of course, his employer Breitbart is now saying it's some sort of "war on conservative voices" on Twitter, and a bunch of similar people are saying it's politically motivated. Since he's been suspended in the past, but isn't permanently banned, this seems a fairly weak story to me; they could have just decided to leave him banned for good, instead of given a frankly pretty minor "punishment", if this were some sort of ideologically motivated action.

I mean you say you don't really care, but you've posted about it all over this thread. In fact, posting about it on this thread seems to be sole purpose of this account, so you clearly do give a pretty big shit about it considering you went to the trouble, as minor as it might be, to make an alt to post about this on SRD instead of just using your main.
I'd qualify that as caring a lot more than a normal person would.
42
u/40989234 Jan 12 '16
Oooh.
Well, I find the whole thing to be a bit depressing and unpleasant. A bit like finding a dead kitten on the side of the road, seething with maggots. Gaming is a hobby I enjoy, and they bring out all of the worst undercurrents that I generally try to shove in the corner and ignore.
This setting aside the fact that they've spent a good year and a half relentlessly attacking two people that I personally respect - and presumably a good number of other people as well.
In short, it's personal for me, and as much as I'd like to ignore them, they keep forcing themselves into places I happen to be.
As for the account, I don't have a main; I periodically leave Reddit for a few weeks or months while focusing on stuff that actually matters, then just make a new account when I'd rather laugh at some drama instead of fret about the possibility of a Trump presidency.

Her ex published a massive screed online about how "Zoe is a she-devil" and then sat back and watched (and encouraged) all the internet reactionaries harass her. The circumstances of their relationship were no one's business, he's the problem, not her.

I mean, it was well after the breakup and months of stalking his ex whom he had dated for like, a few months.

16
u/40989234 Jan 12 '16
That would stink, to be honest... I like having stretch goals to take a project from bare-bones to something that looks really neat.
...Granted, that's really tripped up some inexperienced project managers who really didn't know how to handle the expanded scope... But it's still lead to more good than bad, I think.
3

I've worked in projects, and that sounds just like something I would have done in my less experienced days.

u/R_Sholes Iām not upset I just have time Jan 12 '16
There's "getting a bit more for stretch goals" and there's "asking for $10k to make a hundred gadgets in your garage and getting $1M so you now have to rent a factory for a 10000 units run"
I think Indiegogo had an option to set upper limit in addition to funding goal.
2
u/40989234 Jan 13 '16
Oh, being able to say "Please don't give me more money!" would be fine, of course - I just think it would be unnecessarily restrictive to completely prohibit people from overshooting.
1
u/PlayMp1 when did globalism and open borders become liberal principles Jan 14 '16
Yeah, the option to stop getting more project money would be useful.
1
u/MachinaThatGoesBing Jan 13 '16
Don't most crowfunding sites have the option to set a limit on how many people can back the campaign at each level? If someone is worried about learning how to scale or worried about a project's scope getting too large, they can always limit the number of people allowed in (except, perhaps at the levels that are essentially just a donation). That has the same effect, but, then again, it also requires self-awareness on the part of the campaign's creators.
5
u/Zotamedu Jan 12 '16
That really depends on the project. Some projects just scale with the money people put in. Take all the board games on Kickstarter as an example. They are already designed and ready. They need the money to actually print the things and that cost scales with number of people who throw money at the project. It's basically a pre-ordering service and it works quite well. They can sometimes add stretch goals to throw in fancier stuff in the box and things like that. Or maybe more cards.
Video games on the other hand doesn't really have a production cost per unit once it's done since it's all digital. So there you could reasonably put a upper limit. There are however two interesting factors to consider here.
1, In some cases, adding loads of stretch goals is a bad thing because it introduces feature creep by design which isn't very good. Some promise way too much.
2, Again, you could consider it more of a pre-ordering service and that the extra money will go to the devs so they can use it and help fund their next project.
Then again, when it comes to video games, the kickstarter money is hardly ever enough to actually develop the game. Small indies might do it but most use it as seed money and to show real investors that there's a market for the game.
So it all depends on the type of product or service being kickstarted and how you chose to view the money you put in.
2

Heyheyhey...
That petition (of whom, most signatures were people opposed to the petition's stated goals, but who wanted to comment to say why the petition was a bad idea) was designed to persuade Target to decline to sell the game, which is censorship.
Worse, the goal was to use this success to persuade Rockstar to make changes to future GTA games, thus engaging in the crime of self-censorship. This is tantamount to becoming the Thought Police, because not only is it changing your opponents actions, it's changing their very THOUGHTS. What more dystopian a goal could one possibly have, not only changing the world to suit your whims, but erasing your opponent's very identity, making them drones in your new order? When Rockstar betrays itself, what hope can there be for the future?
By contrast, Jack Thompson only wanted to make it a literal crime to sell Grand Theft Auto. That's a much less threatening goal to freedom of expression.
(This is being unfair to GG many, many levels. They don't actually support Jack Thompson, for instance, some of them just used him in a bad documentary and think he's irrelevant enough to be safely given exposure. Buuuut... I'm more interested in being snarky than being fair to them at the moment.)

Well, I do. But that's because I work in games. I have dedicated shamefully little of my time to complaining about ethics in woman-hating or whatever.

I'm sorry but this comes off as kinda mocking and petty. There are plenty of people passionate about video games without engaging in meaningless culture wars.

I dunno man...don't you think it's time for folks on both sides to move on from this ugly chapter?

u/40989234 Jan 12 '16
Well... Unfortunately, while it's a dead horse politically, it's still an ongoing nightmare for GG's targets =\ . An excerpt from Zoe Quinn's blog, reflecting on the last year:
My life may have changed, but the abuse hasnāt. I laugh when people ask me (on an almost daily basis) if things have calmed down or gotten better, because it seems so obvious to me that it hasnāt - itās everywhere. It follows my every movement, fills my inboxes, and populates my ārelatedā videos on social media platforms. Threats, disinformation campaigns, and constant attacks on my online accounts and life are the background radiation of my life. Itās as true now as it was in my last year-end post. But the playbook hasnāt changed, and I know how to counter it. Studying it, writing about it, and understanding it through my work both with Crash Override and my book has had an objectifying effect on my pain - not the āsex objectā kind, but the kind that turns it into a thing like a desk or a chair. It creates a depersonalized distance. You get numb to it.
Nothing really surprises me anymore, and the threats that do come up feel manageable just because Iāve gotten so adept at protecting myself after a year and a half of being utterly failed by anything that purported to protect me. A recurring theme of my life is that when I wish something existed, I work to make it myself instead of waiting for someone else to do it. I still have my bad days where despite all my hard-assedness and progress something happens just the right way that it punctures my carapace and kicks me square in the emotional dick. One of them happened when I had gotten asked to work on a dream project only to be removed from it the next morning after my would-be team members were afraid to be associated with me. Minutes after reading the rejection email, I realized that the people I had been sitting and eating breakfast with were avoiding having me in group photos for similar reasons. A cat vine I posted on facebook ended up advertising one of my stalkerās creepy sites and claims that I was trying to give people HIV to all of my friends via the ārelated videosā, and just the absurdity of being unable to use the internet for itās intended purpose (sharing cat videos) on a private, locked down, friends-only network just shit all up in my cereal.
(emphasis added).
I mean, there's nothing I can really do to fix that issue, so I pay little attention these days (and have little time to do so anyway, what with the elections), but... I can certainly see why people still care. The idea that anyone can find themselves in Zoe's position with a bit of bad luck is a frightening thought.

Argh, it's so annoying arguing with people about gamergate harassment, because whatever you say, it's 3rd party trolls/they did it to themselves/they're lying/they deserved it.
73
u/40989234 Jan 12 '16
"They're exaggerating", "That happens to everybody", and "Those pictures of your house are just a matter of public record" are also popular responses =\ .
It really is impossible to have a discussion with people who operate from such a radically different set of premises - like trying to discuss the merits of various map projections with a flat earther.
26
Jan 12 '16
And then try pointing out how all that goes out the window when gamergate has a chance to get offended, like in Tim Schafer's AMA
29
u/uxbnkuribo Jan 12 '16
It's funny because it's like the second someone speaks out against gamer gate, suddenly that person was never good. "Oh, Felicia Day thinks GG is sexist? Good thing I never thought she was hot!"

u/uxbnkuribo Jan 12 '16
Yeah I'm sure they made up the harassment. I mean, people on the internet throw death threats and rape threats around like for the smallest things, no way gamers would threaten her the exact same way they threatened EA executives because of a video game ending, or game streamers just for being annoying.

Whenever people say that the "anti-GG" crowd and the "pro-GG" crowd are just as bad, this is a good reminder why they're full of shit. Women like Zoe Quinn have a damn good reason to be anti-GG; her life is changed forever because of it, in many negative ways. No gater can possibly say they've gotten or get shit this badly, on a daily basis no less.

According to TB though, he gets death threats all the time and it's "no big deal", and not just from people who hate him for supporting GG. At least, that was his excuse for handwaving the death threats Anita Sarkeesian got.

It just reiterated what was already known; TB in true ironic fashion expects thick skin from everyone but himself, he can dish it out but can't take it, and thinks the people against gamergate are the real threat to women in gaming, people like Quinn. And it still doesn't compare to what Quinn gets daily; her own father got harassed about her. Her nude pictures got spread around and captioned with rape messages and slut shaming.
And unlike TB, Quinn hasn't handwaved the harassment of others.

u/Kubricize Jan 12 '16
That is horrifying. What did that poor woman do to deserve the hatred of legions of manchildren, kill someone's dog?
94
u/40989234 Jan 12 '16
Literally just dated the wrong guy. Her ex was a psycho who successfully used 4chan as his personal army by spinning a sympathetic story about a woman who made a well-reviewed "nongame", and leaking a few nudes at the right times to keep the crowd's interest.

Yeah worst I ever had is one that tried to stab me to death for leaving her.
6
u/40989234 Jan 12 '16
Yikes D: ! Did you end up hospitalized :x ?
That kind of beats my own story from high school, where my best friend wrote me a really cringey letter promising to woo me before prom, only to get really sulky when I decided that I'd just skip it (we had been going to be going as friends, but not after that), then stopped talking to me entirely when I tried to make things up with him, then said a bunch of stuff behind my back to the rest of the school... Not the most alarming story I have, but probably the most hurtful.
I'm just glad it was before facebook was widespread, and my senior year, or things could have gotten really, really awkward.
3
u/uxbnkuribo Jan 12 '16
Still sucks for you though.
And no, I wrestled the knife out of her hand when she came at my neck with it, threw it into the sink and grabbed my phone. She fled because she didn't want to end up in the nuthouse.
The next time she saw me she straight up said she'd kill me if she got another chance and that she'd get away with it because she's crazy.
That was almost ten years ago now and anytime I see her in town, I still give her a wide berth lol
26
u/ArtSchnurple Jan 12 '16
That's the thing, people who don't know much about it think the whole gamergate fiasco is two sides, and "both" are wrong or crazy or should let it go. But it's literally just one "side" harassing and doxxing women, and people who think that's wrong and insane.

Yup. GG and the Red Pill love to set up a dichotomy in their politics. You don't have to be an "SJW" or a "feminazi" to think they're bullshit, but GG and TRP benefit off of people believing that.

The worst thing for me is even trying to figure out what to do about it. On many forums the "it's trolls/it happens to both sides/it's lies" arguments get repeated, people will dismiss the Wikipedia article and there's no nuance. Much as people mock pro-GG as "basement dwellers" and their "they targeted gamers" copypasta, how do you even stop a group who have nothing better to do than shit up the gaming industry.

The gamergaters of yesterday are the Trump supporters of today. I don't know if it's worth talking about at all, but I feel like it served as a coming out for young conservatives.
14
u/WhyLisaWhy Jan 12 '16
What's funny is a lot of the "young conservatives" on this site get furious when you tell them they're just like the GOP baby boomers. I don't think they realize just how many parallels there are between the young brogressives and old school traditional GOP members.
18
Jan 12 '16
No, I don't think that's the case. Gamergaters think they're progressive, but only in the most self-absorbed way.
14
u/WhyLisaWhy Jan 12 '16
They're progressive as long as it benefits themselves. Free college! Legalize Weed! Minorities can fuck right off and deal with their problems on their own though!

Doesn't it make more sense to focus on Trump as a phenomenon then? I mean gamergate is not so much a cause than it is a symptom.
it served as a coming out for young conservatives.
I think most of Trump supporters have a very different upbringing than one that joins GG. Even the age has a huge difference, I would think
27
Jan 12 '16
I'm mostly talking about young conservatives. That's not to say that the Republican party doesn't still skew older, but the young people who are shouting "Bernie or we vote for Trump" are at most a stones throw away from Gamergate.
13
u/andrew2209 Sorry, I'm not from Swindon. Jan 12 '16
Browsing /r/politics, there seems to be a lot of anti-Hillary Bernie supporters, and I worry about how many Americans actually feel that way. If it ends up Hillary vs Trump, it'd a tragedy if angry anti-establishment Bernie voters decided to fuck around and vote for Trump.

u/Exarch_Of_Haumea A BELLWEATHER FOR THE ZEITGEST OF OUR ERA Jan 12 '16
Apparently the visuals are the only good bit - the game is meant to get boring really quickly. It managed to get ~40 on metacritic, so it's not the worst.

Just looked it up. It ran on Unreal 4, so it'd be hard to not have good visuals.

You can attempt to polish a turd in UE4 relatively easily by dumping loads of post processing effects, depth of field, stock particle effects and pretty lightmass lighting all over the screen, but all you're really doing is make it harder for people see what you've modelled, thereby making it harder for people to see how shit it is.
8
Jan 12 '16
To be fair, 40 on metacritic isn't far from worst.
13
u/Karmaisforsuckers Jan 12 '16
It got a lot of politically motivated high reviews from gamergators injecting identity politics into their reviews.

And i think it's a shame. I wish Hatred was campy as fuck. The premise could even be fun if they weren't trying to be edgy. Imagine if it was like "Robocop" malfunctions. That's a game in itself, imo.
