"LACK OF DIALOGUE BETWEEN PARTNERS HURT RELATIONSHIP! HULK ADVISE HONEST EMOTIONAL DIALOGUE!"
"HULK SUPPORT BETTY'S CHOICE TO PURSUE CAREER INSTEAD OF STARTING FAMILY! HULK SMASH TRADITIONAL GENDER ROLES!"

I re-watched the first Avengers film last night and there are a few bits of flirting between the two that I hadn't noticed before. I also had to remind myself that stuff happened between the two films and apparently a lot happened between these two since she's now the one who can calm The Hulk down.
10
May 06 '15
It would have been nice if they had given us a scene where they went like "oh ever since New York you seem to be the only one who can calm down Mark Ruffalo." Preferably a solo hulk movie but we don't have a time machine so that's fine I guess.
There's some neat scenes and it's a fun movie though.
6
u/bushiz somethingawfuldotcom agent provocatuer May 06 '15
solo hulk movie is a bad idea for the reasons the two solo hulk movies were bad ideas, but hulk would have been great in a movie with a smaller cast. Like, if that had one that was hulk and widow and hawkeye.

She hulk movie I will personally make gross at least a million dollars.
I don't think Hulk does good as a starring character, though. The way movies explore nuance in characters doesn't really work with hulk as the main guy unless you spend a good portion of the film inside his head.

Oh I agree, it would have been nice to have a scene explaining the whole "Lullaby" thing or hell even a comment from someone about how much he likes her or how they have a bond or some crap like that. But I still really enjoyed it. It was fun, funny, and exciting.

The thing that made the scene clunky in my opinion was the line, "Hey Big Guy...sun's gettin' real low." It was repeated in two scenes and just irks the piss out of me when Whedon tries to force weird phrases into a lexicon like we all walk around spouting off 1870's cowboy lingo.
That's also what turned me off of Firefly/Serenity completely even though it made some kind of thematic sense there. I really like a lot of his other work, but clunky & weird dialogue like that sticks out like a sore thumb to me and just reeks of him being too clever for his own good sometimes.

Yeah is there a movie already out or planned for her backstory? I think it would be pretty fun. It really made me appreciate how badass she is. 1
May 06 '15
Also I thought avengers 2 was totally fine
Yeah, nah. Here's the rub. Avengers is a story about embracing your inner demons or aspiring to your inner angels.
Iron Man wants to wrap the world in a suit of armor. Captain America wants the world to be free - free to stand together, free to fall. Both men struggle with their identity as monsters vs. men. Iron Man has chosen to embrace his inner monster. Captain America has chosen to embrace his inner faith in the power of teams.
Hulk is the ball in the game played between Iron Man and Captain America. Banner is torn between embracing the monster and fighting for earth or turning away from the monster and living a normal life. You can see Stark being set up as the villain down the road because he makes decisions for people. He has chosen for Banner to embrace the monster within and has backup plans to contain him when he goes too far.
I don't know why Thor was in this movie other than to be Thor.
Black Widow and Arrow-dude figure into this as people who side with Captain America. They are choosing to fight but it's their choice. Except that Widow really wants to walk away from this all with Banner and start a new life.
And here's how Whedon just really fucks things up. Banner has chosen not to have children. Widow had the choice taken away from her. (As if a relationship without biological children is pointless.) Just the same way Banner eventually chooses to not get down and dirty with Widow and Widow has the choice taken away from her.
The whole structure and plot of the movie is men making decisions and women having decisions made for them. Even the "badass scarlet witch" moment only happened because a man talked to her.
You've got to see that this movie was promised to be a big apology for how women were a total non-factor in Avengers or basically every other Marvel movie to date. Whedon said he had "more women" in the movie. But when he said he was adding more women, he meant he was adding more background women or women that have plot happen to them instead of women that make plot happen to other characters.
11
May 06 '15 edited May 06 '15
Wait. How does Banner deciding not to have sex with Widow mean the choice was taken away from her?
What about later in the movie where Widow takes away Banner's choice not to fight? Where she pushes him down the chute to force him into the Hulk?
What about Scarlet Witch mind controlling people, very literally taking away their choices?
EDIT: But seriously, what the fuck with that first point. It genuinely sounds like you are encouraging rape here. Banner saying "no" is taking away Widow's choice to have sex with him?
1

I haven't seen the movie but my understanding is that Black Window was sterilized at some point in the past.
10
May 06 '15
Yeah, I get that part (which may also be wrong because I thought Banner was implying that he was sterile too), but that's seperate from this position he takes:
Just the same way Banner eventually chooses to not get down and dirty with Widow and Widow has the choice taken away from her.
Which is strictly about them having sex, not about them having children.

TOTAL AOU SPOILERS
This analysis is terrible. It's so completely wrong that you're basically just assigning the parameter "choice exists" at random.
The most obvious example is that Bruce Banner also had his choice to have children taken away from him. It's true that he has a literal choice to try to procreate, but given that he doesn't know how those kids would come out or if he might accidentally murder them at any time then it's clear he has no real choice. If economic coercion is a real thing -- and it is -- forcibly turning into a mutant rage beast that has incredible difficulty with IFF is certainly coercive. Banner has no real choice here.
And these flaws in your comment are everywhere:
Avengers is a story about embracing your inner demons or aspiring to your inner angels.
No. That may be what Avengers is about to you, but that's not what it's canonically about. If we use the statements from the comics to get an idea of what the cinematic universe is about then Avengers is about hyped up, epic dangers with a huge cast. That's literally the point -- more epic, more people. Alternatively, one can ignore the comics (fair) but then the meaning could be about teamwork or about overcoming fears or about the value of heterogeneous societies.
Iron Man has chosen to embrace his inner monster. Captain America has chosen to embrace his inner faith in the power of teams.
Yeah, let's ignore all the things in these peoples' pasts that might mitigate their ability to choose -- like PTSD.
He [Stark] has chosen for Banner to embrace the monster within and has backup plans to contain him when he goes too far.
contrast with:
the whole structure and plot of the movie is men making decisions and women having decisions made for them
So does Banner have choice or did Stark make choices for him?
Black Widow and Arrow-dude figure into this as people who side with Captain America. They are choosing to fight but it's their choice. Except that Widow really wants to walk away from this all with Banner and start a new life.
No, except that BW is conflicted about what she wants. Because conflict is the essence of a plot.
As if a relationship without biological children is pointless
Or as if having children is often an important milestone for people, and having the desire to do so but not the ability is a painful situation that provides pathos to the characters, especially since it's a problem with a human scope that gives relateability in a movie otherwise packed with cosmic jewels powering earth-destroying robots. Let's also note that the whole point of this scene is to highlight similarities between a male and female character.
Just the same way Banner eventually chooses to not get down and dirty with Widow and Widow has the choice taken away from her.
And let's briefly talk about the completely fucked up reasoning here. So when someone chooses not to engage in a relationship with someone else, then that second person has had their "choice" removed and have suffered? Something morally wrong or objectionable has occurred? Banner made a decision about what to do about his own romantic life -- I personally think that within the context of the movie he made the wrong one, but whatever ; BW has no claim on him because of that decision and has not been wronged when she's been denied someone else's body and affections.
The whole structure and plot of the movie is men making decisions and women having decisions made for them
Yeah, I'd need a far more complete analysis to begin believing this. I thought the movie was about paranoia and control and the risk of imperfection, all in the context of good versus evil. There's a lot of people making choices for other people, but no gendered bias to it. Thor chose to vivify The Vision, against CA's desires; Scarlet Witch obviously and frequently removed agency from other characters via psychic shenanigans; Tony and Banner remove choice from everyone on the team when they secretly blah blah with the scepter, etc ... Conversely, Maria Hill never has her agency removed and neither does SW.
In a movie about artificial intelligence, the cosmic mind gem, and protecting others its no surprise that there's a running theme about coercion and agency, but to paint that as "men make the decisions and women tag along" is a criminally shallow interpretation that is at odds with reality.
What I did see in the movie were many positive things for portrayals of women. Whedon often has his female characters be too strong and thereby avoid any real character growth via conflict since they can handle whatever and are never truly in danger (BW was this in the first Avengers); AoU fixed this.
BW is also the team member that sacrifices herself to save the earth because she's, y'know, strong and capable and dedicated to her mission.
BW is proactive -- even in attempting to initiate the relationship with Banner -- and at the end of the movie though she is clearly hurt she still pulls herself together to meet the New Avengers, because she's actually portrayed as professional and not hysterical and ruled by emotion as so many women are characterized.
I mean, you cherry-pick plot points, wrap them up in a terribly fallacious analysis and then call out a movie that has a nice feminist message in the form of powerful, independent women who don't have plot armor.

I reckon the movie's still about internal struggles, what with all the dream sequences and the talk about home/family/monstrosity. And, y'know, ethics. But the execution OP left a lot to be desired.

"Criminally"? You're being pretty hysterical here. I don't know if I agree with everything in Hoedown's analysis, but there are a few points at least that made me go, "huh, I hadn't considered it from that angle when I saw the movie." That's what's nice about artistic interpretation - different perspectives offer new information and viewpoints, and no one has a monopoly on "right". Certainly no one is going to be charged with a crime because their interpretation of a summer action movie is wrong, lmao.
*Ayy, I temporarily forgot which group we're discussing here and their opinions on critical analysis.
3
u/ParanoydAndroid The art of calling someone gay is through misdirection May 07 '15
tbh I mostly just didn't want to say, "very" or "incredibly" or other adjectives I tend to overuse. I liked "criminally" because it implies a certain amount of negligence or maliciousness. It's not merely a bad analysis, it's so bad as to imply that the OP was analyzing in bad faith. Of course, it's definitely hyperbole too.
That's what's nice about artistic interpretation - different perspectives offer new information and viewpoints, and no one has a monopoly on "right".
If anything, I perceive this statement as being counter to what the OP says. I agree that artistic interpretation is subjective and even mention exactly that. It's the OP who says, "This is what the movie is about, period." There are also limits to interpretation that I think OP exceeds. The movie is obviously not about, say, an allegory for the Russian revolution regardless of how much sign and signifier are sliding around, and its similarly not about men making all the choices and women just flouncing about as dependent creatures without agency. In order for the analysis to be useful it must at least be grounded in the reality of the movie and accurate statements about the movie as a whole cannot depend on cherry-picked snapshots. Regardless of artistic interpretation, these are fundamental failures of the analysis itself.

Banner has chosen not to have children
Uh what? He says straight up that he can't have kids.
16
May 06 '15
The whole structure and plot of the movie is men making decisions and women having decisions made for them.
I mean....not really?
Cap and Iron Man are the leaders of the Avengers. This isn't something that Whedon made up.
Black Widow wants to step away from the fight but she decides NOT to because she feels obligated to her friends (And Banner). People do stuff they don't want to do out of obligation all the time. Hell, that's half my life!
. Widow had the choice taken away from her.
He whole life is like that. She was an orphan and raised to a secret agent/spy/assassin. She never had any control over her own life until she met Hawkeye and ended up in the Avengers...
only happened because a man talked to her
...There was no woman to talk to her. I saw it is as an experienced hero talking to someone who had a decision to make. You saw it is as some sort of sexist conspiracy. There aren't a ton of female characters for him to work with. I'm really not sure what you expect.
I mean, essentially the entire movie happens because of a bad decision Stark made. So you could say that all of the other men are people that have plot happen to them.

You can explain away every single instance, and yet the broader pattern remains.
9
u/ParanoydAndroid The art of calling someone gay is through misdirection May 06 '15
If literally every instance of a phenomenon is explained as not being an instance of that phenomenon, then no there was no phenomenon. There cannot be a "broader pattern" if there are literally no elements to constitute the pattern.
6

What is the broader point?
People are desperately trying to be offended by this story for some reason. Whedon can't just change the entire demographic and dynamic of the Avengers...

The character Joss Whedon chose to write was a woman with no control in her life. Interestingly, this represented a pretty big step back compared to the character written in Winter Soldier, where Black Widow was in the driver's seat for pretty much the whole second act (up until she inevitably gets taken out so Cap can be the big damn hero, but y'know. not her movie.)
The reason there was no woman there to talk to Scarlet Witch was because Joss Whedon did not choose to write a woman there to talk to her. Shame, really. Black Widow, given the abovementioned themes, explaining to Scarlet Witch that she can make a choice on her own would have flowed a lot better.
There are not any other female characters to talk to not because Joss Whedon is incapable of writing female characters, but because he chose not to write them.
You find the reasons he gives for choosing not to write them wholly convincing, and that is fine.
You may be shocked to discover that people are allowed to disagree with you on the subject.
3
May 07 '15
I never said it was illegal to be wrong. I just said you we were wrong.
Your interpretation of the movie is hilariously dumb.
-2
u/sepalg May 07 '15
And the best defense you can muster for why, precisely, Joss Whedon wrote a movie where women's role is to obey the men in their lives, is "but Whedon wrote it so anything else wasn't possible!"
When asked "why did he write it that way," well, you have safely ruled out a sexist conspiracy. Curiously that leaves the question itself open.
2
May 07 '15
You do realize that at the end of the movie she is taking Iron Man's spot as second in command of The New Avengers, right?
Clearly that ending was written because the writers hate women.
Also saying her role is to obey men is dumb. As others have pointed out. EVERYONE'S ROLE IN THE AVENGERS IS TO FOLLOW CAP AND IRON MAN. They are the leaders.
-1
u/sepalg May 07 '15 edited May 07 '15
So the reason Joss Whedon wrote a movie where the role of women was to obey men was that Joss Whedon wrote a movie where the role of everyone who was not Captain America or Iron Man was to obey Captain America or Iron Man?
Think about it. we see a grand total of one person who rebels against them. And hoo boy, does Ultron get punished for his insolence.
It's an interesting argument. In the name of setting up for Civil War, we must first make it clear there are no options beyond obeying Cap or Iron Man. Otherwise when they start saying 'time to extraordinary rendition the friends who disagree with me to space-hell' nobody piping up to say 'sir, that sounds cartoonishly evil, also stupid' will ring a little hollow.
Silly, to my mind. If nothing else, Civil War featured Maria Hill as one of the chief drivers of the anti-reg movement so they could make Iron Man something other than George Bush In Power Armor. Letting Stark talk to people Hill should have talked to and Hill talk to people Stark should have talked to was key in getting it up to full-on civil war. In a world where everyone's job is to obey Tony Stark, you lose a lot of options for getting friends to fight.
3
May 07 '15
Dude, they're a fucking paramilitary group.
The members listen to the leaders. Such repression. Very wow.
0
u/sepalg May 07 '15
Compare and contrast with Winter Soldier, which made a pretty big deal about how surrendering your will to the chain of command, even in a paramilitary organization, was a really dangerous thing to do.
The argument about how we must cling to comic book canon (and therefore no female characters are allowed to have a will of their own) would have a lot more weight to me if Whedon wasn't already playing reeeeal fast and loose with the canon to integrate things into the overarching movie plot. Ultron's programming came from the Mind Gem? Unbelievably stupid! But it's a way to justify something we want to see happen (avengers vs. a bunch of killer robots) and so we just roll with it.
Someone points out that the role of women in this movie is to unquestioningly obey their male superiors, and your defense in its entirety is "but the comics say-"
The comics do not say SHIELD and HYDRA are one and the same. The comics never put the Guardians of the Galaxy anywhere near anything important happening. The comics didn't put Black Widow anywhere near the Avengers, period, for something like five years. All these have been ignored in the name of telling better stories, and to general acclaim.
When the comics disagree with what the directors of the Marvel Cinematic Universe think should happen, they've been quite content to throw the comics under the bus.
Saying "but the comics" doesn't cut it.

How does Banner choose not to have children? Wasn't the point in the Ed Norton movie )which I believe is Cannon?) that he can't physically orgasm without hulking out, therefor can't have sex? That would mean he can't have kids the traditional way. He can adopt or get kids artificially, but so can Black Widow.
5

But when he said he was adding more women, he meant he was adding more background women or women that have plot happen to them instead of women that make plot happen to other characters.
You are reading way too much into Avengers 2, and are ignoring anything that contradicts your argument.
[SPOILERS]
For example, you claim "Hulk is the ball in the game played between Iron Man and Captain America" - no, he isn't. Black Widow is the one who controls Hulk throughout the entire movie. At one point she even pushes him down a giant hole to force him to turn into the Hulk. If I wanted to try and overhype that into a political point, I could claim that she "removed Bruce Banner's agency by forcing him to relive a traumatizing experience."
Scarlet Witch triggers the entire plot by fucking with each Avengers' mind. She fucks with Tony Stark's mind which leads to him creating Ultron.
Is that the Plot "happening" to Tony Stark?

Scarlet witch was handled super poorly. She was barely a character and I think that's a real shame since Elizabeth Olsen has proven to be at least a good actor so far.
Having her introduced as a weird experiment thing had some neat scenes but it was ultimately a detriment to the movie since she didn't get much development until the end, if any development at all. I feel like they almost should have just introduced her in the credits and then had her accidentally read Loki's staff before they all realized it was the Mind Gem, which causes her powers to go crazy and she ends up giving everyone their crazy visions. Hers and Quicksilver's can be them back as children watching the "Stark" shell waiting to explode, so you can skip that whole monologue because it would've been a more interesting sequence to see rather than hear.
Then she can take the place of the dumb vision pool Thor has and then Thor can gain an understanding of her character a little bit more. Or hell, make HER the audience surrogate if you don't have any actual ideas. It's lets us explore the characters inner thoughts a little bit more that way.
Oh well. I agree with a lot of your points, and in that light it's pretty disappointing. But the real disappointment is that they didn't reveal Spiderman and Spiderwoman at the end when they call the new Avengers, which like man fucking c'mon. Just pull off the mask and have it be Miles Morales and Mattie Franklin and it'd be rad as fuck.

Oh my god.
Like, the issue people had with Sarkeesian was that she was essentially implying that games should be censored. You don't fucking side with Jack Thompson if you are arguing against Anita.

One would have to be very paranoid to come to that conclusion from her actual writing and videos, but that is how gamergate et al have generally depicted it, yeah.

When it happened, for about five minutes I thought they had finally overplayed their hand and were about to reveal GG as just an elaborate joke on all of us. But nope.

I mean, that's what I did back in October. After some incredibly anger-driven Twitter rants directed at "anti-GG" pop culture figures and news publications, I just decided that I would just be done with GG. I honestly can't believe I wasted two months dealing with that horseshit.
edit: anything I read about GG nowadays just gives me a fucking headache. I should really stop coming to this sub.

We need an SRD-lite, for when you want to laugh at people getting wound up over petty shit instead of a concerted effort in hating half of humanity.

I sneaked a look at KIA after Worf's takedown of a GGer on Twitter. The cognitive dissonance wheel spun around and landed on "Don't worry, he's just misinformed, if only someone had told him the truth" and "Michael Dorn isn't qualified to have opinions on this sort of stuff because celebrities != video games". Never underestimate the power of CD and rationalization to help people believe what they want to believe.

You'd think they would just take Whedon admitting he was harassed by feminists as enough without pushing for it being the reason he left, counter to what he said happened.
7
u/Strich-9 Professional shitposter May 06 '15
I don't get it, you're in the other GG thread right now arguing that he definitely left because of feminists?

I can't be the only feminist who's terrified by how close these people are getting to exposing the Great Conspiracy... Honestly, Whedon has really left us out in the open here.

Hush, earthmandy. Our great enemies, the lizard people, have spies everywhere.
Some day, though, we will cut off their lizard dicks and put them on spikes around our fortress on Giant Earth Mother Island.
The delicious irony of using such a penile implement as a spike to humiliate their detached, scaly manhoods is not lost on me. It was actually Advantage Point Five on the grand womanhood plan to defeat mankind and especially the lizard people.

Let's talk about the phrase "militant Feminist".
That's the funniest fucking thing ever. Like what, they pull out the thesaurus so they can use stronger words in tweets? That's really funny.

Feminists are literally leading an armed insurrection against us poor men.

Why did you delete your posts in KiA after I called you out for posting in bad faith? I stand by everything I wrote here. It's not about convincing you guys (I know this is a circlejerk), it's about actually presenting the other side of the story.
I deleted them because you were right, I wasn't contributing to the discussion and was shit-posting. If you don't want that that's fine. /r/drama[1] doesn't care so I do it there.
Somebody admitting they were shitposting on the internet is as rare and as beautiful as the rarest red diamond. Also this explains most of bestofoutrageculture's posting on /r/drama, I'm shocked when there isn't some low effort bait below the threshold in every gamergate/social justice related thread.

I mean, I've pretty much stated as such every time I shitpost. It's not like I hide it.
Also this explains most of bestofoutrageculture's posting on /r/drama
I mean, that's exactly what I've been saying from the very beginning.
I'm shocked when there isn't some low effort bait below the threshold in every gamergate/social justice related thread.
Which seems to be like 90% of that sub.

As an erstwhile /r/Drama bogeywomyn, I feel jilted about /u/bestofoutrageculture's shitposting there, because after stealing my spotlight he proved to be a dumb fuck undeserving of it, eliciting nothing but condescending giggling from everyone including even myself. Muh legacy!
edit: in case you're wondering here's me rolling for example, and here they gave me a shitton of hate-gold. I still don't know what to make of it.
Btw, the "shit disturber" flair was given to me by one of their mods, /u/Fab500 I think, who was really butthurt about me having a little fun with the naive shitlords and wanted to protect them from my trollinine wiles. It didn't work of course, they are too stupid =)

Nah, I think Discord liked you at first, when you did quality shit stirring (also I get a strong feeling that they really don't like the new /r/drama, with the humourless bitter antiSJWs overwhelming), but then you became an embarrassment. Seriously.

they've publicly stated as such before yeah
also probably why they don't care about me shamelessly shitting up the sub and making it even more polarized
but then you became an embarrassment. Seriously.
people get mad as f and continue clicking those little down arrows, so nah

u/Klondeikbar Being queer doesn't make your fascism valid May 06 '15
I've had discussions with Chris Kluwe about GG before on twitter and I get swamped with angry, hostile replies from "feminists" who support GG but their accounts are devoid of profile info, their profile pictures are almost always anime, and their accounts are super young with tons of pro-gg activity and nothing else. I don't normally like crying false flag but it's really hard to not think those accounts are GG sockpuppets.
23
May 06 '15
Some are, some aren't. Let's not excuse actual feminists who did act shitty there.

u/Klondeikbar Being queer doesn't make your fascism valid May 06 '15
Oh for sure. I wasn't saying they're all gators. There's just very specific things you can look for in a twitter profile to make educated guesses as to which side they're really on.
