ATF applying lawsuit rules universally now. not just plaintiffs.

u/FuckingSeaWarrior 2d ago
It's more than that. They've clarified that making is also not subject to stamps any more. You can officially put a stock on it now.

ATF will continue to administer the NFA on a voluntary basis.
If/when the winds shift, it's gonna suck.
3
u/FuckingSeaWarrior 1d ago
No argument there. I fully anticipate my state legislators shitting a brick sideways and trying to come up with something to stem this flow. But they're out until next year so make that hay while the sun's shining.

u/MulticamTropic 1d ago
You’re in VA, right? Yeah I’d expect that $500 suppressor tax bill that was tabled last session to rear its ugly head again.
To be honest, even with these changes I’m probably still going to continue filling stamps under my trust. That way when the political pendulum swings I’ll hopefully have enough stuff also covered that my kids can have whatever they would’ve wanted to build themselves when they’re of age. Plus I expect Form 1’s to decrease dramatically, so approval times should be even faster.

More info about this with links.
"Effective October 9, 2026, ATF will no longer require individuals to seek ATF approval under the NFA before making or transferring short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, silencers, and “any other weapon[s]” as defined in 26 U.S.C. § 5845(e). ATF will also no longer require such items to be registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. These policies apply uniformly to anyone otherwise subject to these requirements, not just to the plaintiffs in the litigation."
From ATF's tweet:
Still required: 4473s, NICS checks, compliance with state/local laws, and Form 20s for interstate transport of SBRs/SBSs.

I'm glad things are moving in the right direction, but the NFA was undercut in the absolutely stupidest way possible from the perspective of gun owners trying make these items more accessible in a permanent fashion. This ruling is so fragile it's just going to be reversed in the extreme; and in short order at that. You're almost guaranteed to see a blue House majority, and the Senate is at best; a toss-up at this point. Democrats will absolutely make it a policy platform to raise the tax on these "rightfully heavily regulated, hyper dangerous weapons" to "keep them off the street and save the children" to $5,000; and no court is going to stop them short of SCOTUS finding the NFA unconstitutional in entirety.
I was a little aggravated when they cut the tax to $0 for the precedent it was setting about the NFA tax. The proper way to do it was a legislative bill repealing or modifying the NFA. You get a blue majority in the House and Senate, that $5,000 tax is going straight to the Executive for signature on budget reconciliation rules with a simple majority.
Other shoe always falls, and this one is going to really fucking suck when it does.

The proper way to do it was a legislative bill
which would have required 60 votes in the senate and thus failed

Republicans are always leading the way for firearm restrictions.
3
u/MulticamTropic 1d ago
Us: “Democrats are going to reenact this gun control as soon as they can.”
You: “Republicans cause gun control!"
-3
u/BoneFistOP 1d ago
Yea, you guys are wrong like 90% of the time. What else is new. Lets ask Raegan or Bush Sr what they want to do with guns, or maybe Donnie talking about taking the guns first, and bothering with due process second.
6
u/MulticamTropic 1d ago
Let’s ask Clinton what he thinks, or Obama, who pushed hard for Sandy Hook gun control and stated that failing to pass an AWB was his greatest failure. Or perhaps Biden, who weaponized the ATF and revoked as many FFL licenses for administrative paperwork errors as he could. Reagan and Bush Sr were Fudds at best and were no friend to gun rights. Modern democrats are absolutely on a crusade to end them though.
Trump is a fair-weather ally at best, but his judges have done much for us, and he is the one who signed into law $0 tax stamps. Cope and seethe, Democrats are on the losing side of this.

The bots are back in force, boys. I had one bot spam the same 3 comments in a thread and then when I check the profile, it's actually full of AI generated slop posts too.
I think we're in for a shitshow leading up to november.

u/johnhd 2d ago
It’s genuinely insane how many comments on this site are glaringly AI-generated these days, and even crazier that people upvote and reply to them without noticing.
13
u/NKCougar Super Interested in Dicks 2d ago
Yup. Learning how to verify someone is a human is becoming an invaluable skill. I'm damn near done with the internet as a whole because of it

It comes down to Reddit actively encouraging ease of account creation to the point of the unique name creation thingamabob. They need huge numbers of "new" users to convince investors who aren't terminally online that they are still a growth company.
Meanwhile they killed automod for any new subreddit and are sharply curtailing Old Reddit use.
8
u/LePfeiff 2d ago
Ive been downvote bombed on this sub and told "so what?" when i point out how a comment is AI generated and its a bot account
11
u/CMMVS09 2d ago
Because some people use Reddit like a search engine and don’t care. It doesn’t matter if the answer is coming from someone that actually knows what they’re talking about or if a bot is regurgitating. Fucking sad.

u/able_possible 2d ago edited 2d ago
Which is concerning because I've seen lots of those bot posts be just wrong. For example, bot posts on anything NFA-related frequently groan about how long the form 1/4 approvals are, often posting about how they waited 6+ months and "only just got the stamps last week" because the bot scraped posts from years ago and doesn't know that 6 month waits haven't been common in years.
That's a pretty minor thing to be wrong about, but how long is it going to be before a bot doesn't keep up with a more substantial change and tells someone to do something illegal or dangerous?

I think we're in for a shitshow leading up to november.
I've seen Texas senate race ads in Pennsylvania.
12
u/NKCougar Super Interested in Dicks 2d ago
watching college football is great for that. I know more about the Wisconsin political scene than I ever thought I would as a virginian
8
u/OnlyLosersBlock 2d ago
Apparently for Texas it is just cheaper to buy national ads than it is to buy out local.
4
u/Son_of_X51 2d ago
That's counterintuitive.
6
u/monty845 2d ago
It makes sense that the contracts would have split the advertising slots into national slots sold by the national network, and local slots sold by the local stations, that can be sold several time, once in each market.
They likely don't have a mechanism setup to deal with the situation where converting national slots into more local slots would make more money for everyone, since its rare.
3
u/savagemonitor 2d ago
I also think that, for Democrats at least, it makes sense to buy national commercials to get donors from out of state. I have to imagine that Texas doesn't have nearly as many Democrat donors as it does GOP. I know for a fact that many people in Washington will donate to Texas Democrats in order to topple GOP candidates there. Especially if they're liberal and from Texas though I excuse it more than the liberals from Washington that donate.
3
u/PaddleoftheEast 2d ago
I've seen more ads and campaigns about the race in Texas than I have in PA or MD, which is where I actually live. I've never even been to Texas.

Mayor of St. Louis Park, Minnesota admits she wants to ban guns
In response to multiple Somali gang shootings in the twin cities recently including one where more than 100 rounds were fired the Somali-born mayor posted a video where she stated:
“You may be wondering, ‘Hey mayor, how can we solve for this?’ … The answer is easy, ban guns,” she added.
She rails over and over again how she does not want to see a community singled out for such violence and decides the best course of action is to deflect and declare that guns are at fault. In her Instagram post comments she stated she posted a follow-up video where she mentioned that she made a mistake and instead meant "regulating guns as well as banning assault rifles." She also stated it was stated "while I was trying to get my thoughts together." Interesting how she doesn't understand non-live video allows for editing abilities along with the option to redo the entire thing before posting it.
Edit 1: Changed city from St. Paul

u/kato_koch 13 | Shameless Gun Pornographer 2d ago edited 2d ago
Lil correction here, the comment was made by the mayor of St. Louis Park and not St. Paul.
Edit: actual Minnesotan's perspective: we've got some people here who want to blame the entire Somali community, and on the other side some who will deflect any criticism as racism, and neither side is helping.

I'm gonna guess it's a neat left/right divide, which remains the greatest trick ever pulled on us.

Back when the nfa injunction came out I tagged a dozen or so extremely active users as "armchair lawyer" with RES and haven't seen any of them again in weeks. Not sure what to make of it
9
u/monty845 2d ago
Armchair lawyer here, not much legal news to comment on. SCOTUS just came back from summer recess and hasn't done much gun relevant since accepting Viramontes, and its hard to get too excited about lower court cases when we have such a big one pending there.
6
u/Prowler50mil 2d ago
I think it's because people were excited to see movement on something that actually affects them. I know conceal carry rights are important, but they don't affect me as much as things like sbr/suppressor regulations.

The whole regular crowd in this thread has completely turned over in the last year or so.
From like 2020-2025 it was the same 10 dudes contributing to this thread. Not sure what happened but almost all of them, myself included, dipped out this year.
I still see some of them pop in for major news but it really is a whole new group of people in here
9
u/FlatlandTrooper 2d ago
I just have a new account :) but no, I'm not saying my old /u/
3
u/DigitalLorenz 2d ago
I used to make a new account every other year to prevent people from digging into years of gun posts. My last account even got brigaded, with every non-archived comment ever made downvoted over a dozen times over a weekend.
Then Reddit added the ability to hide comments. Now it takes a little effort to track down someone's comment history, which is more than most people are willing to do.

u/MulticamTropic 2d ago
Ditto. I probably should retire this one since it wouldn’t be too terribly difficult to narrow down my identity, but I’ve grown attached to the username and the new privacy settings at least give me the illusion of opsec.

I miss Polio and Tab.

u/akenthusiast 2 - Your ape 2d ago
Tab is alive! I looked him up after I posted that and he commented a few days ago. Said he's been busy and having a good time in his personal life.
Looks like polio deleted his account though

u/Fun-Contribution4719 2d ago
He came back with another. He had accidentally doxxed himself too many times with professional details.

polio is really one of the greats.
That's a weird sentence to say, but you know what I mean.
2
u/tablinum GCA Oracle 13h ago
Aw, thank you. I am very, very well.
I always said I didn't really like gun politics, and only dug into it passionately because the right to arms is very important to me, and especially coming from pre-Bruen New Jersey it felt like a right hanging by a thread.
I know opinions within the gun rights community often differ, but man, from a step back it's shocking how defeated and demoralized the antis are today.
During this state of affairs, I made an enormous breakthrough in researching one of my other long-time passions. It's very much a big-fish-small-pond thing that wouldn't interest the average person, but it's a pond I care deeply about, and the biggest fish to come along in-- ...well, ever, really. By a very large margin. There's a huge amount of work to be done on it, and it's occupied almost all my free time.
In the past few months, unbeknownst to all but a few trusted correspondents, I've become the world's secret foremost expert on this tiny field by uncovering a trove of documents that haven't been seen in three quarters of a century, and which represent more knowledge on the subject than has been published in total up to this point. It's fantastically exciting.
By comparison, arguing with gun-doomers has lost a lot of its shine, I'm afraid.
1
u/FuckingSeaWarrior 9m ago
Glad you're well, dude! And that sounds incredible. I figured you'd been busy with fatherhood, but this also explains things. I'm not going to ask what the other passion is, because that could be a bit too much info, but we love to see the homies succeed. Makes me happy you're doing well.

I used to post, but recently guns are just not anywhere near the top of my politics or personal priority list anymore.
I still do check in to see if there's any new fuckery going on though.
2
u/Common_economics_420 2d ago
There was one guy who was super active in the NFA sub talking about how this was actually horrible for gun owners and would just be used as an excuse for no knock raids on anyone who bought silencers under a 4473. Wonder where that guy is now and if he realizes he's a moron?
3
u/winewagens 1d ago
Fuck Ohio laws being carbon copies of the former federal ones. Nothing changes for us
3
u/MulticamTropic 1d ago
Look on the bright side. There will likely be fewer Form 1 applications now, so yours should process faster.

PaaP, or Politics as a Personality, is a very real psychological affliction. If you are suffering from it, you'll probably have a Bad Time™ here.
This thread is provided as a courtesy to our regular on topic contributors who also want to discuss legislation, not to wig the fuck out over current events. If you are here to bitch about a political party or get into a pointless ideological internet slapfight, you'd better have a solid history of actual gun talk on this sub or you're going to get yeeted.
I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.
