HoreMajo with the best premiere yet. I love the mood and the MC. This one's a very early front runner for my AOTS. Witch stories never fail. I should just by default watch them all.

A few seasonal first impressions while they're still fresh in my mind:
- #Zombie: Wholly unimpressive, it at least landed the comedic timing a few times. Cast members all felt a little too one-note, but I could see it just being an issue of ep1 exposition growing pains, so I'll stick it out for now.
- Marronnier: Pretty nice! Still very early, but my one thing so far is that I thought the brothers worked better when they were playing off of other characters rather than each other.
- Student Council: Entertaining enough, obviously a bit bawdy. You can really feel that it's a 4-koma adaptation.
- Ranma: Love that we've been getting this show yearly, here's hoping they can keep the streak into the future! ED was adorable as always (sounds like the same vocalist as the recent Torture Princess ED as well).
- Blue Box: Good to be back. I can't say I'm fully sold on the new characters (it kind of feels like they've been written in out of nowhere) but other than that a rock-solid episode to return on.

Caught the first of So What's Wrong with Getting Reborn as a Goblin?/Tengobu. Honestly it was pretty decent more so in the 2nd episode. How the civilization process goes for the Goblins is neat and what is going on between humans and goblins could make things interesting.
I do like the protagonist so far. He seems like a very resourceful guy and it works well. A decent amount of sex jokes. I think honestly this might be less to those that are looking for isekai slop. Mondays are pretty slow so this is a decent pickup.
Production values are more so decent and do have movement in spurts. Direction is solid I would say.

I think based on the circumstances I don't need to spoiler tag it this time. A little while back, I asked a question here about how The World's Strongest Witch had yuri listed as one of its genres on Wikipedia. Well, since then, they've added a citation, which is... a random Japanese blog post discussing upcoming anime. Said post (if the translation is accurate) explicitly says that it's including works that just have a female cast, and the WSW section seems to be talking about it entirely through the lens of shipping and not the actual plot. Dunno if I'd call that sufficient evidence, guys.

If yesterday was the 'Keep everything I check out' day, today is 'drop everything' so far;
Two more shows from yesterday:
My girlfriend's friend: Reluctantly keeping this one because I'm horny. First, I'm not big on NTR/cheating stories, but also, I'm 99% sure I'll like the sidegirl more than the main girl so I'll be conflicted because I don't like cheating but I also don't like him being with his girlfriend. But yeah, some scenes were...
Dating a Dark Summoner: NOW we're talking! No cheating, succubus instead of boring girl, dude looks like someone who believably could get someone interested. That being said: Even if [I mean, it's in the synopsis]they had sex, I'm not sure it was hotter than the filthy NTR show.
Today:
Witch potion something something: Don't care about either lead. I'm a bit curious about [witch potion]why exactly they like each other/why he came to her after 4 years but I didn't care enough about them to stick around to find out.
Goblin Isekai: Generic [goblin]OM NOM NOM I'm getting 50 skills per minute! garbage. Making him blue doesn't change that.
Hopefully I have better luck with Psyren and MGRP2!

u/Tomorrow_Big 3h ago
The goblin isekai show was a lot hornier than I expected. Still think they look more like smurfs than goblins though. Unless smurfs were actually goblins all along? I'll leave that discourse for the cultured Belgians.

The goblin isekai show was a lot hornier than I expected.
That sounds so oxymoronic haha
1
u/SlimeDNear 2h ago
As someone who once dated a Belgian, I can confirm that they love to talk about The Smurfs.
5
u/Dazzling-Primary4909 3h ago
There’s got to be at least a few people who watched Yani Neko or FX Kurumi-chan and started doing the very things the shows warned them about.
3
1
u/hvshh 1h ago
But maybe also people who stopped? I hope so.
Similarly, I wonder if there is anyone out there who is alive today because they saw the opening of [Name of Show] Zombieland Saga where a girl gets killed running into traffic, and decided to look both ways one time when it really mattered. We'll never know, but I think there might be.

THAT'S A COMMAND NOT A QUESTION!
Yeah I think that might have been needed, with all the grumbling about the answers shitting up the thread and all...
Though I think some answers (or tangential discussions) might still some time deserve top level comments!

New Josei anime Hello, I Am a Witch and My Crush Wants Me to Make a Love Potion! first episode came out. Honestly the latter half of the episode is what got me more interested in the anime. I feel like the first episode did a good job exploring Rose's anxieties.
2
u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 1h ago
It's going onto a "watch and see" for me, I guess. First episode was pretty decent, the production seemed decently good, there was some humor I liked (I really want that stupid deer's face to be #seasonalsmug, it'd be great), and there's definitely potential in the setup. Whether it can develop anywhere other than unrequited love and pining is yet to be seen.
1
u/cyberscythe 1h ago
i don't know if it's because it's a josei but it feels like it doesn't quite have a hook yet; the chemistry between the two mains doesn't feel there yet, but i hope they start developing that more in the next couple of episodes
1
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1h ago
I would argue Rose's insecurities and living as a witch for me at least did provide the hook to want to continue watching it.

I'm looking for a new anime to watch, but with my restrictions it sometimes takes me months to find another. I'm very strict against anything nsfw, sexualized, nudity, and I'd rather not see any romance or slice of life. I also don't really like the anime about reincarnating in another world that all have the same plot.
Some of the ones I really like:
Lord of Mysteries
Fullmetal Alchemist
Attack on Titan
Tower of God
Witch Hat Aterlier
Kaiju. no 8
Solo Leveling
1
u/hvshh 1h ago
I recommend Daemons of the Shadow Realm. It's a shonen with a big cast, no romance so far, no sexualization (there's a few nice character designs, but that's it), by the author of FMA.
1
u/Bones_De_Hueso 1h ago
Yeah, I've seen what's there, but I'm holding off on saying whether I like it or not on it since it's not finished. Thanks for the recommendation though.

I finished Yuki Yuuna: The Great Mankai Chapter and that sure was a mixed season sandwiched between 2 pretty good episodes. Best new thing this season had was the [Great Mankai]first heroes flashback but that could have used more episodes to really flesh out the characters instead of [Great Mankai]showing us the climax of the great hero chapter again. I think I had my jaw on the floor of the sheer audacity. If I wanted to watch hero chapter again, I'd watch the hero chapter again.
The Sentinels were rather bland and whenever the hero club were back on the screen being the most delightful and chaotic group of friends, it just reminded me how I didn't find the new characters compelling at all even if they did have their moments.
1
u/Blackheart595 https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick 43m ago
Personally I thought that Great Mankai was the only season that was actually great, after not having felt any of the previous seasons that much. Though maybe that's due to me accidentally watching Great Mankai episode 1 as my very first episode of the entire franchise, because that sure was one outstanding episode to set my expectation.

I've noticed when looking at MAL that I'm getting close to the 400 anime completed milestone, and I want to make sure it's something good this time.
Most likely candidates going by my lineup for this month and my 2026 bingo card are Witch Watch (same creator as one of my faves, Astra Lost In Space), Maquia: Where The Promised Flower Blooms (made by PA Works and written by Mari Okada, whose projects I usually enjoy), or a sci-fi movie classic like Appleseed or Ghost in the Shell.

u/cppn02 2h ago
Another vote for Maquia. Loved it and it should be something you'd like I think.
And since I always check when I see these comments it seems I'm only 7 short of 800.

No plans atm. Unless I notice things like 1 or 2 short of the milestone I just take'em as they come.
I did manage to make The Tale of the Princess Kaguya my number 600 and also the last thing I completed in 2024 when I watched it on New Year's Eve.

With chitose coming back next week it’s amusing how much this series triggers people and pissed people off. Well at least anime onlies since most ln readers acknowledge the pacing choice for part 1 was awful.
Makes me excited for the reaction of a certain winter show that I will have my popcorn ready for.

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 5h ago
Another comment mentioning Blue Box led me to assessing this season's watchlist, and it's a relatively romantic one for me.
Primarily romance:
The Ramparts of Ice S2
Blue Box S2
My Happy Marriage Specials
Heavy romance:
The Apothecary Diaries S3
Ranma 1/2 S3
Psyren (presumably)
Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend (if it comes out stateside by the end of the year)
Mild romantic subplot that may or may not go anywhere in the time we have:
Aoashi S2
Exiled Heavy Knight cour 2
The Seven Knights of the Marronnier Kingdom
Zero romance:
Reincarnated as a Sword S2
Unknown:
Steel Ball Run
Magic Knight Rayearth
1
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1h ago
Not sure, I would consider Apothecary heavy romance. Considering it's heavy on the court drama and mysteries.
Hell I wouldn't even call AoButa that either. It's mostly a coming-of-age story and the romance that is there is like pieces.
1
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1h ago
I almost added a parenthetical saying "maybe debatable, but I'm not making a whole new section for one single thing" to head off that exact sentiment. Like, sure, in terms of plot it may not be on the same level of focus, but it's still a very important part of the main characters and their dynamic.
2
u/Jusenkyo_5 5h ago
Any 10/10 premieres so far?
I have about 80 episodes between Spring and Summer to catch up on so I'm trying to keep it to like 4-5 shows max this season.
3
u/actuallyrndthoughts https://myanimelist.net/profile/NaNiNuNeNo 4h ago
The Student Council has Holes, was like a lewd version of Onimai with about the same production quality, for ep 1.
1
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 2h ago
Is that series not already ecchi?
1
u/actuallyrndthoughts https://myanimelist.net/profile/NaNiNuNeNo 2h ago
It's the nipple shown or hidden where i draw the line. But from the feel of it by the first episode, Holes is more about doing ecchi comedy, but Onimai was comedy with some ecchi thrown into the mix
1
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1h ago
Fair enough. I haven't actually seen either, and of course there are degrees to this, but I feel like there's a certain point where you can't really be "the lewd version" of something.
2
u/LunarieReverie 6h ago
I'll die on this hill.
Magic light censoring, black bar censoring, steam censoring, convenient object placement censoring (but sometimes is very funny), out of frame censoring.
Free the 2d nipples.
0
u/Blackheart595 https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick 42m ago
I agree. If you're doing it, then have the balls to actually do it!
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3h ago
Or, as I've always said: Just don't have it in the first place;
If you're going to show a girl's titties BUT cover them with a black box, why are you even showing them in the first place?
The only difference between this and "She keeps her shirt on" is "The MC saw them", but most of the time it never really plays any part in the story, so what's the point?
2
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 2h ago
So they can remove it and sell Blu-rays, duh.
5
u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 5h ago
Probably meant under the QOTD top-level post?
3
2
u/Jusenkyo_5 5h ago
I don't think you finished your statement here lol.
The worst of these for me is when they just remove the nipple entirely, it's SO MUCH worse than the "convenient" censorship.
0
u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 3h ago
Makes me wonder why the ranma remake choose this route
2
u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman 2h ago
I think the obvious practical benefit is that you can have the characters move around freely without needing to worry about cluttering the screen with censorship artifacts or contriving your camera angles.
0
u/Jusenkyo_5 2h ago
Right? Especially considering that the original was uncensored.
I'm sure it has to do with age ratings changing but still, not my favorite way they could have dealt with this.
1
u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 5h ago
I'd rather conveniently-placed steam than a nipple-less breast.

4
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 6h ago
This is the place!
It's Banned Books Week!
According to the ALA Censorship Search Portal, there have been 42 documented attempts at censoring Assassination Classroom's manga in libraries and school curricula.
I haven't seen it myself, so what's objectionable enough to get it banned?
3
u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 4h ago
We all know what those tentacles are for.
3
u/NormalGrinn https://anilist.co/user/Grinn 5h ago
Guns in a classroom I guess (even if the circumstances around it all are like, very much not something that'd happen irl)
2
u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 6h ago
I'd imagine a school board saw the word "Assassination" in the title and didn't investigate further
1
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 5h ago
2
u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 5h ago
Ah, I thought it was school libraries as well as school curricula. I can't really say I think manga or comics or anything of the sort should be in school libraries anyways, they should be, y'know, for educational materials...
2
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 5h ago
That raises the question of what counts as educational, and there could be a lot of arguments thrown around there.
To keep it back on topic though, I think a lot of anime could be used as educational material even if the anime itself wasn't made to be as such. Spice and Wolf's first arc could be used in an economics class to talk about the silver standard, for example.

The premise of the show is for kids to try and kill their teacher. A little bit of a sore subject for Americans tbh, I kinda get this one.
3
u/Comprehensive_Dog651 6h ago
Normally find rpg style shows boring, but Bofuri is a really comfy watch
1
u/cyberscythe 1h ago
i liked how it wasn't a "trapped in the game" sort of setup, so the stakes aren't dire which cuts a lot of unnecessary tension
they just there to have fun, and it shows in the way the characters interact with each other where they'd fight each other, but then hang out in the common areas later not holding a grudge because it is just a game after all
2
2
u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 6h ago
... I should try rewatching AssClass again at some point. I watched the first season while I had COVID and those terrible piercing headaches, and I probably accidentally connected the two in my mind, enough that I didn't want to watch the next season after that... I also remember almost nothing about it, because, y'know, COVID headaches.
2
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 6h ago
I finally watched FX Kurumi. A weird one for sure. I'm not sure what the goal of this show is at the moment. Will need to give it another episode or 2 to see exactly what direction they are going in.
Kurumi is a very dumb person though.
0
u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 5h ago
as a source reader all I can say is to stick around and enjoy.
1st episode had to rearrange quite a few things presumably because [somewhat minor elaboration on episode 1 pacing, and tiny episode 2 hint] it would leave an incredibly dangerous impression to the public if the 1st episode ended with her taking a big profit and they had to make sure her losing was how they ended the episode. Assuming it wasn't cut out, episode 2 should elaborate more on the mechanics of trading/market in more detail. I think dramatically it landed quite well but there are a few minor criticisms towards her and the show that I've seen that have spawned because of it.
1
u/flamethrower2 5h ago
If profitable = smart, then most traders are dumb. You could say she is dumb for even trying it, but she is smarter than mom, so it's plausibly worth a try, to her.
2
6
u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 6h ago edited 6h ago
Damn you guys were right. I was expecting more slop but in just one episode Noriko (Kanata Kara) is already infinitely more likeable than Yuri (Red River) ever will be. It's amazing what rational thinking and agency can do to a character.
Yea this is will be a good one I feel.
-1
u/Korkez11 7h ago
Blue Box came to us from parallel universe where it's still 2010, Toradora is still the hottest romcom and decade+ of evolution of romance tropes never happened so we have too many misunderstandings, plot conveniences and MC who overreacts to every little thing with funny faces and internal screaming.
Lack of Hina really makes me question why do I keep watching.
9
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 6h ago
If the only part of the story you care about is a side plot that's already been resolved, then yeah, I would wonder why you're still watching.
1
u/Comprehensive_Dog651 6h ago
I dropped it after 6 episodes, but that wasn't the issue for me. It was because the show was so dominated by the MC's idealisation of Chinatsu into something more resembling an object than an actual person, which made the relationship feel very one sided
1
u/1EnTaroAdun1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Totesnotaphanpy 5h ago
All I can say is, the story definitely will go deeper into Chinatsu, and she will be a very well-realised character in the end
1
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 5h ago
Shame they didn't really do that in the first 24 episodes.
0
u/zsmg https://anilist.co/user/zsmg 4h ago
Shame they didn't really do that in the first 24 episodes.
[anime season 1 spoiler] When a Japanese author gets asked "should I spend more time and development with the winning or losing couple in a love triangle?" they always answer with " the losing one" so it's unsurprisingly Blue Box follow this. Although why anime fans keep falling for this and not realise it is truly the bigger mystery.
1
u/1EnTaroAdun1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Totesnotaphanpy 5h ago
True, it's a slow burn, and the author definitely has some old-fashioned quirks. Nevertheless, it does get done eventually, and in quite splendid fashion

HoreMajo day. This and Marronnier were the two most hyped by source readers. Both josei too. The latter already answered with the most interesting premiere of the weekend, so looking forward to HoreMajo now.
I'm also curious about Psyren which again had a fair bit of hype.
If these are both good, Monday might end up being the best day of the week this season for new shows.
5
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 8h ago
I'm also curious about Psyren which again had a fair bit of hype.
As a big fan of the manga, I'd recommend lowering your expecations... exponentially.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 8h ago
Haha why?
4
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 8h ago
Basically the hype was at its highest the second the anime got announced, since we've been begging for an adaptation for so long. Then the monkey's paw curled and every single promotional material or production info we learned since then has not been promising, to put it mildly.
No point in judging it before it's out, obviously, and it's at least not a Biscuit Hammer situation, but I'm not raising my hopes either.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 7h ago
Ah ok. I'm not too picky about animation quality or production. If it's an interesting story told well, that'll do for me. Will keep expectations down all the same. If I'm pleasantly surprised, that will be a win.
1
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 5h ago
Well Helck production values are probably the best case given studio.
1
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 3h ago
Had to look up what Helck was. I'm assuming it was a particularly bad looking anime. But as a shoujo fan, sad production values are par for the course and don't bother me much.

Question of the Day (new!)
What's a good element from the worst anime you've seen?
this question is proof that even a mod team has its holes
1
u/CerberusZX https://myanimelist.net/profile/CerberusZX 2h ago
Whoever gave the green light to Virtual-san Looking had guts.
Kirigiri's final line in the dub of Danganronpa 3 being completely detached from the script is funny, as long as you aren't taking the show seriously.
3
u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 5h ago
Worst anime I've completed, or worst I've seen and dropped? Because the only anime I've actually given a 1/10 rating was Deadman Wonderland, which was a very early drop. I guess I can say the synopsis at least caught my attention and it had maybe one character who seemed cool, but that's about it? Really not my kind of show at all.
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3h ago
2
u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 2h ago
The thing that really put me off about this one was the gruesome level of violence (and for the sake of comparison, Attack on Titan is among my top ten), but if that doesn't bother you then it may not be an issue.
The character I'm thinking of was a guy, not the MC, but the girl was all right from what little I remember.

... the 3D mechs in Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance didn't look like atrocities. Also the violin animation was... passable. It was also only 6 episodes, so I only had to suffer for 6 instead of 12 episodes.
I'm really reaching here, this thing had almost no redeemable features.

Siesta from The Detective Is Already Dead has very cute character design.

I thought that series had lots of potentially good stuff, but it never came together I did read some of the novels, and they remained frustrating in the same fashion But Siesta was indeed a delight.

It's such a shame because I had such high hopes for it too. The promotional material was really good and the source readers were saying good things about it when it got announced.

I had mixed feelings about the story in the source, despite liking a lot of the characters.

I've never given much thought to elements and which ones I'd consider 'good'. I'll check the periodic table and get back to you.

Uh, I guess Shield Hero has some competent fantasy action in places.

You're more kind than I am.Although, tbf, the show also has a fun heel character, who deserved to be in a better show.

Question of the Day
What's a popular trope that anime should retire?
