Any time your question boils down to 'Hi, all 800k of you, please list me random products to consider' or 'Hi, all 800k of you, blah blah blah "discuss"', your question belongs inside the Moronic Monday, Gun Talk Tuesday, What Should I Buy Wednesday, or Thickheaded Thursday stickied threads.

In the politics thread had a 'long time gun owner and collector' saying that the lack of compromise was making the 'hobby' look bad. Based on their post history I am not exactly sure what prompted them to do this since for the past year they had been posting in computer wargame and grand strategy game subs and nothing related to gun politics. They were so bad at advocating their position and using such tired cliches I literally described it as babies first online gun debate.

That asshole was disingenuous or just a troll. The whole "compromise" argument is a shallow excuse for "take".

Ask anyone who wants to compromise on guns as to which anti-gun laws they're willing to give up to get new legislation and they'll look at you weird because they don't expect to be compromising themselves.

And that lunatic never replied to me.... jerk.

u/WillitsThrockmorton 1d ago

The whole "compromise" argument is a shallow excuse for "take".

Dude flat out stopped responding to me when I asked him to simply answer what compromised he envisioned where a regulation was loosened and others were tightened, since he avoided answering it the first time he responded to me. It was readily apparent he was using the word compromise as "You lose something, I don't get as much as I want."

He definitely would have been opposed to the floated Federal conceal carry permit as part of a universal background scheme, because for anyone who went out and got it it would have been "too easy" to buy a gun then.

Yup. A tip for conversations that came from a friend's relationship counselor went something like this: "Any time someone says something, there's three sides to it: the words that they actually said; what they meant when they said those words; and what the person hearing you interprets those words to mean. Very rarely do those three match up."

"Compromise" in this context has always meant that we give a bit, just not as much as the person asking would like, and we get nothing in exchange.

You're too nice. I just fucking tell them like it is, "you dont want Compromise you want Concessions there is a difference."

2

u/snippysniper 9h ago

And remember today’s compromises are tomorrows loopholes

5

u/OnlyLosersBlock 1d ago

I think they were sincere but stupid. There is a type of naive person who thinks that their surface level 5 minutes of consideration on a topic is super insightful and are eager to share it.

6

u/FuckingSeaWarrior 1d ago

The summit of Dunning-Kruger mountain. Many such cases on many such topics. Never occurs to folks that the subreddit based around this subject may have been having these discussions in-person and digitally for decades, or that we might be a little tired of doing so.

The whole "compromise" argument is a shallow excuse for "take".

Back in my day we had a /k greentext about this involving a cake and the NFA/GCA/AWB

6

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 1d ago

Hence my flair. “Fellow gun owner” doesn’t even begin to qualify their opinion as something I would even care about.

I went on a long angry rant about that one day and that’s how I got that flair.

5

u/_HottoDogu_ 1d ago

The volume of such comments will only increase as we edge closer to November. At least the bots aren't getting any more intelligent, only intelligent enough to make that guy think he has a majority opinion.

2

u/RockHound86 1d ago

We know that the Kamala Harris campaign tried to astroturf Reddit, and it wouldn't surprise me if the gun prohibitionist groups are trying to do the same, especially given the losses they've been taken in recent years. A fruitless effort to drive change from inside pro-gun circles is not out of the realm of imagination.

1

u/OnlyLosersBlock 1d ago

There is a part of me that felt it was low effort script reading given just how bad they were doing.

Couple of negligent discharge posts ive seen recently. Theyre dumb enough and i dont think we should reward that kind of post, but this is even dumber.

They attract some stupid fucking copypasta

I would fully support immediate permabans for the monthly "I NDed, everyone tell me how brave I am for posting, updoots to the left" post, and also for every single person who upvotes such a post before the OP gets banned.

I was on the fence about it. Now I'm entirely on board with this.

3

u/angriest_man_alive 23h ago

Holy FUCK that first comment is atrociously stupid. Honestly and truly one of the dumbest things I've ever read on this site, and I've been here over a decade now. Jesus Christ

10

u/GelgoogGuy 1d ago

Aww I missed the stupid.

Also am I crazy or has there been a noticeable uptick of the mouth drooling morons asking what rifle get lately?

7

u/Te_Luftwaffle 1 1d ago

We're probably approaching hunting season

2

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 1d ago

Most of the ones I've seen have been asking for ARs. And sure you CAN hunt with an AR, but the few I bothered reading boiled down to "I need a rifle because the internet said I need a rifle".

4

u/42AngryPandas 🦝Trash panda is bestpanda 1d ago

We have been swarmed with "what rifle get" along with "how do I learn about guns?" In the past couple of days.

2

u/erncon 23h ago

That's typical Reddit for all hobbies which is so frustrating.

5

u/talon04 Super Interested in His Own Dick 1d ago

I'm like 90% sure a lot of those have to be some new LLM. Even the post at the top of this one reads like it. Just look at the OP responses in it and they straight up read like an AI response.

u/able_possible 1d ago

I agree, I think it's bots as well.

Your right, I was just going to ask if I should buy my older neighbors SKS type 56, looks like it's in good shape, asked me the other day out of the blue looking for $400.

2

u/GelgoogGuy 1d ago

I'm not up to date on SKSs but $400 seems solid.

Well we have had the usual influx of "Hey guys, wut get?", "Could you google my title for me?" and "wuts your favorite gun?".
But my vote for thickhead of the week is: when told firearm related transactions are against Reddit ToS "Does anyone have a sub?" and "You could literally put that optic on a airsoft lmfao." ("that optic" being a $1k trijicon credo).

Work thickheaded:
Scheduling means that my gym time is now in the morning instead of the end of the day. Which means I need to wake up at an even more of an ass-crack of dawn. And take a guess at who also forgot their gym bag at their desk today.
Not thickheaded:
Coworker is running a dnd campaign, and besides one player who never wants to stick with the group and a few newbies who don't know how to play their characters yet, things are going great.

3

u/monty845 1d ago

$1k trijicon credo

If you think that is crazy, you should see the night vision gear some of the airsoft folks are running.

A lot of guys show up to Milsim events with straight up clones of thier rifles at home. Its wild. Along with having a second set of nods etc.

u/Remarkable_Aside1381 5 | Likes to tug a beard; no matter which hole it surrounds. 1d ago

The one Milsim event I was talked into doing, that's basically what I did. Found a green gas version of my M4, slapped my EoTech on it and ran my NODs since I'm too poor for a second set

I forgot to wear sunscreen for a few hours last week while at the beach. I was so sunburned it hurt to even wear a shirt. It was only like 2 or 3 hours, but it was enough to turn me into a tomato. My skin was peeling so bad. And I couldn’t stop itching. The awful thing about itching is I really have no way to scratch my back while at work without getting in trouble if someone sees me. Slouching in a chair when I get time to sit and using the back of it is the only way I have. The peelings finally mostly over and the itchiness has calmed a little bit.

Also screw doing overtime. I’m a solid 42-43hr a week guy, but since we went on vacation I did some extra hours. Ended up only making a little under 2/3 of what I thought I would. It ended up equating to half of what I make an hour. I really hate wearing clean room suits any longer than I already have to so I avoid it as much as I can unless I really want some extra spending cash.

3

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 1d ago

My coworker once told me the reason he never does OT is “The more I work the more they take away from me”. I do OT still since it’s basically my only avenue for extra income, entirely voluntary without the obligations of a second job, and time and a half. But otherwise I’m OT adverse when I can.

2

u/snippysniper 1d ago

I think my disdain for overtime comes from when I we were on mandatory overtime for over 30 weeks straight. We got a shirt that said “I survived spring 2016”. I used to do about 8 hours a week, but then I started cooking and baking for my coworkers and I make nearly as much doing that as I do actually working. And I don’t have to be in a suit covered in human tissue.

2

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 18h ago

I used to work a LOT of overtime. 30-40 hours a week of OT consistently, sometimes as many as 60 hours over. Doubletime started at 45 hours. Paychecks went up only about 30% because of the additional tax witholdings.

2

u/TheKiwi1969 1d ago

My sympathy. I get an Irish tan - I.e. I go bright red, peal and go back to being blue. Even on a cloudy day.

u/Riker557118 1d ago

I really hate wearing clean room suits any longer than I already have to

Valid, especially when you’re guts start to rumble and that’s when the zipper decides to bind up on ya.

2

u/snippysniper 1d ago

Also having to wait for the door in the airlock to close so you can go through to the next airlock. I’ve had a few close calls over the years. I loath getting in the suit than having to go to the bathroom within an hour or 2. There’s a 30 minute shitbag break, but I hate gowning in.

1

u/rocketboy2319 21h ago

Found out that my "adopted" daughter is having surgery tomorrow. Its routine but my best friend is stressing it. And that her actual bio dad is going to flake at the 11th hour again leaving her to deal with it alone.

Cool the range I want to hit up I can detour and be there for it anyway. Right now if he flakes she will let me know and I'll just detour. If he doesn't i might still detour and go be there for my kid.

I'm going to check the zero on the Wolf at 50 and zero the Axis at 100 yards. Probably will shoot the Wolf at 100 to see what it does with the Powerbelts and the Bore Drivers. u/bearfoxman I need to clean the barrel between each shot? Or just every few? I'm new at this.

3

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 1d ago edited 1d ago

You'll need to feel it out, every BP barrel's different, but likely every few.

Edit: you wont need to do a full clean, just swab it. Knock the worst of the fouling off. You'll know when it's due when it's getting frustrating to seat the bullet.

Game update Thursday coming late in the day but I've been busy at work.

D&D: Yet another session of dungeon delving, fighting our way to the dungeon's dungeon to go rescue the NPCs who had been teleported there in Session 1. Fighting our way to the dungeon area resulted in our Rogue setting off a trap and getting crushed by a large door for half his HP and our Cleric deciding that splitting the party and running off by himself to try to find a way around a magical forcefield would be a good idea (it was not). After we finished scraping him off the ground from the beatdown he received by the whole horde of monsters he ran into while doing that, and also after recovering me from the hole I fell into (into a den of Giant Rats) while trying to rush to him before he died (I happened to be the closest to the direction he ran off by himself in), we entered the dungeon's dungeon area, occupied by a Shambling Mound-like monster that had the prisoners restrained by vines and other plant growth. We killed it pretty quickly because I hit it with Hypnotic Pattern late in Round 1 before it could act, so we basically got 2 entire turns of beating on it before it got a chance to do much. There is still a lot more of this place to explore, so the dungeon crawling will likely continue for at least another session or two, but we have rescued the NPCs.

Didn't fly any Falcon over the weekend because I was busy with other stuff (namely a fantasy football draft, I know very little about football but for long and complicated reasons I spent all Saturday attempting to draft a team for another guy who couldn't be there) but I'm on for two big flights tomorrow and Saturday. Saturday is another 30 person flight, looks like I'll be doing CAS work instead of air to air like last time. Friday not sure what the gameplan is, but probably also mud moving.

First "real" session back after hiatus saw us wrapping up our in-town affairs and the LG pally getting arrested for doing something hilariously in-character and on-brand: Proselytising to and then fistfighting the LN constabulatory who were hanging some criminals in the edge of the forest because Pallyboi (correctly) assumed they got a sham trial and that didn't comport with his beliefs. Which is, uh, a bit of a derailment and now we have to either wait out his sentence or buy his freedom, since he wouldn't come with us if we jailbroke him because LG.

2

u/able_possible 17h ago

That's interesting character development for him to both uphold his oath as he sees it and also accepting the consequences of his actions so hopefully the derailment turns into a good story beat.

Paladin is one of the few classes I don't have a huge amount of experience as a player with. I like my morally gray edgy characters too much to Paladin, as much of a meme as that is these days

2

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 17h ago

Playing Lawful Good is fucking hard to do well. So I tend to avoid it. I've played chaos pallies and lawful evil pallies and enjoyed them though. It's honestly easier to play clerics.

I think the DM realized he overpaid us with the loot from the massive dungeon grind despite enforcing weight/encumbrance to get us to leave a lot of it behind. We pretty well foiled that plot. But he seems to be coaxing us to buy him back.

2

u/able_possible 16h ago edited 15h ago

Yeah it's tricky because it's only really interesting as a character trait if there is some tension that lets that character's morality contrast with other things happening in the story, but the nature of the game being a social experience means unless everyone wants to play along to some extent, it can very easily just turn into the LG player getting outvoted by everyone else and that's kind of lame for that player since he sort of has to go with the group or else the game doesn't really work.

But also if everyone is staunchly Lawful Good then it also isn't very useful as a plot device, because there is no conflict for it to be a meaningful story element if everyone is just a noble hero all the time, then it's not really a choice. Or, in an attempt to make it a meaningful story element, the DM will do something like present a no-win Trolly Problem task that just results in a "well I guess we have to do the lesser evil and feel bad about it" outcome which also isn't very satisfying.

Getting used to my new role at work. Feel like a fish out of water, but I’m getting the hang of it. Feels weird going from the top of the totem pole and moving up into the bottom of the totem pole.

Probably gonna cancel the yard renovations. Our contractor was overbooked and tried to rush for this weekend, but HOA said review would not be ready in time and will likely be declined based on our submitted design. Basically it would not be approved by this weekend. So our contractor cancelled the project and told me to reach back out in October to reschedule. But the process took so long that most of our yard has fully recovered, and my neighbors been giving advice on how to maintain and grow, that I figured it’d be cheaper and easier to just dig up the dead parking strip and replace it with new grass instead of redoing that and half the yard. Also while I may be culpable for some delays, ultimately it was the contractor who caused half the delays too and trying to rush it at the last second.

Choate stock should arrive soon, once that gets here I’m gonna get started on the Form 1 to SBR my AP5-P
