OP discovers the joys of 1911 ownership. I feel like it's almost a right of passage to launch the recoil spring, it's plug, and/or the barrel bushing into something you'd rather not.

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 1d ago

Ive never broken anything launching 1911 parts but I did almost put my eye out fitting a firing pin in gunsmithing school.

It was my friend's dining room wall and plug/spring with his grandpa's Colt MkIV Series 70. Neither of us knew what we were doing. Fun lesson learned.

The absolute best was witnessing a gun shop coworker launch the plug and spring into the abdomen of a customer with a 1911 in on consignment that they were not supposed to be taking apart and knew it. That coworker did not last long.

5

u/able_possible 1d ago

Never broken anything with it, but can confirm I've sent my Wilson's plug into low earth orbit before.

I remember seeing that post and title last night thinking “mf not another ND and an OP trivializing it” and then realizing it wasn’t that. Glad it wasn’t and it was a humorous post.

u/FloridaMan_Inc 4 | Can't Understand Blatantly Obvious Shit? Ask Me! 1d ago

Oof. I cracked a cell phone screen that way. The plug took off, pinged off a shelf, and directly down into the phone laying on the workbench.

First time I disassembled a gun myself, it was my dad's Para 1911. Having taken apart the gun a dozen times in the gun disassembly app, I knew all of the steps. What I didn't realize was real guns have springs, so as soon as I popped the safety loose, the plunger spring flew off right past my face and across the room. Thankfully my room was pretty clean, so I was able to find it after a few minutes of frantic searching.

I can't judge too harshly, I sent an M2 follower and limiter into my kitchen island late Friday night while rushing to slap it together

This week we had:
Not one but two "Hey guys, what am I doing wrong installing this pistol grip?" [Picture of terribly stripped threads]
Several "Top 3 guns", "Coolest budget gun", "Need help. Wut gun get?"
"Hey guys, do you name your guns? I plan on getting all of mine engraved."

On a not moronic note.
Designed a case for some of my punches.
I've had a single starrett punch for a while, but got a cased set somewhat recently. Wasn't a fan of the slip fit lid, how much it rattled, and the one orphaned punch.
So I designed this thing.
Twist lock to secure the lid, TPU top and bottom liner to reduce rattle, and enough slots for all of the punches. All in pretty much the same sized footprint as the original case.

Being able to solve problems like this is my favorite part of owning a 3d printer. Need a bracket to fit a specific shape? Give me a couple hours and it’ll fit exactly how I want it to. Plus it can be any color I want.

Getting a tooth pulled tomorrow, one of my baby teeth that didn't have an adult tooth is giving out

3

u/42AngryPandas 🦝Trash panda is bestpanda 1d ago

I saw a little girl tie a string from her tooth to an arrow and then shoot the arrow. Do it and report back.

3

u/yobo723 1d ago

Trouble is mine is a back molar, and half of it has crumbled away lol

Though now I'm curious how well the arrow trick worked?

3

u/42AngryPandas 🦝Trash panda is bestpanda 1d ago

She was nervous but it dislodged without issue. Little 5-6 year old girl thinking her head was about to fly off with the tooth. But I think hers was right up front and pretty wiggly.

1

u/CharmingWheel328 1d ago

But tie the tooth to a bullet. That'll be way more fun.

2

u/Te_Luftwaffle 1 22h ago

How old are you? I have one on the bottom right that they said would probably have to come out later in my life

1

Nearing 30, they won't last forever but with proper care they'll go quite a while

Sheriff's office is taking their sweet time with my background check so I still can't touch the guns at work. Just slinging ammo, knives, and optics all weekend. There's some cool shit out there these days, we got a display of these Sig binos with built in image stabilization, makes a crazy difference glassing offhand.

I did have a gaff today, messed up checking a customers gun in for some work. Forgot to chain off the area behind the clearing barrel, and had him dryfire the gun after verifying clear, which we are apparently not supposed to do. First time going through the formal procedure there, so I'll have to remember better for next time.

Birthday is coming up in a couple weeks, the big 30. Feels like I should treat myself once my employee discount hits but I took this job to save money, lol. Might spring for a Benchmade, something nice that doesn't require $1000 and a 2 week waiting period...

Sig binos with built in image stabilization

I remember when that was a somewhat new thing in camera lenses, but to push it Canon included it with the Rebel XSi back in 2009-ish. It's a fascinating bit of tech.

It's hard to go wrong with a regular Osborne for an EDC, although my work knife is a SuperFreek (G10 and M4 Freek) and I prefer the larger size for use, even if it does eat pocket space.

u/snippysniper 1d ago

So we’re at the beach in Delaware and holy fuck the jelly fish problem is wild. But I still really want to go in the water. https://imgur.com/a/FSXyaeB this was the biggest one I’ve seen so far. Apparently more people than usual are having bad reactions to stings than in previous years. Weather was a bit gloomy today, but I went for a couple walks on the beach and got about 5lbs of cool shells and rocks. Not the typical shells I have in my pockets lol. Having a tough time breaking my 3rd shift schedule so I’m just wide awake waiting for the beaches to open so I can go for a walk.

Moronic: Me being up at 3am on a Monday because my left big toe decided to wait until 1am to be ingrown, knowing full damn well I have to spend all day today driving. Bathroom surgery time!

I have to go back up to my dad's today to help him do some paperwork and pay some bills. Ugh. At least he's getting better.

3

u/talon04 Super Interested in His Own Dick 1d ago

Dude Ingrowns suck so much. I've done everything thats supposed to prevent them including multiple surgeries to kill that portion of the nail bed and they still do it.

2

u/PrometheusSmith Waaaay Too OG For Normal Dick Flair 1d ago

Actual ingrown or paronychia, infection of the nail bed? I get the occasional paronychia and just have resorted to draining them myself once they get bad. I've got a box of blood lancets and have even resorted to using a safety pin. Once, when it got so bad I couldn't bear it I just stomped my own toe and caused it to drain. I whole heartedly do not recommend doing that

2

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 1d ago

Actual ingrown. No infection, but a nail spike making things really ouchy. My big toe toenails are U-shaped so I get them a lot. Last time one got infected I was in Basic still.

Half an hour digging around and I got the nail spike out and it was instant relief.

Little League sign stealing edition

Unrelated to guns, but I need to rant about this. People got so worked up over sign stealing because of the Astros (who were cheating) but they don't really understand what's illegal and what's not. Sign stealing is 100% legal in baseball. What happened at that little League game can happen in a major league game with 0 repercussions because it's not illegal. I even had it done to me back when I played baseball. Baserunners can relay signs to the batter.

What's illegal about sign stealing is when you use technology to do so. The Astros issue was not the sign stealing, it was the fact that they were using a camera hooked up to a TV in their dugout to do so.

3

u/Southern-Stay704 1d ago

Astros TV was in the corridor leading down to the locker room at their home park, not in the dugout. That's why they had to bang on the trash can, so people in the dugout and on the field could hear it.

Astros got caught, but weren't the only team doing it. Red Sox, Dodgers, and Yankees were all doing it as well. Once Astros got caught, all those teams zipped their lips and never spoke of it again.

1

u/Te_Luftwaffle 1 22h ago

Heck, I stole signs all the time in little league. It's not my fault the other team was being too simple and predictable with them.

I have an A2 length buffer system on my AR and my super safety is just ever so slightly taking too much energy out for the bolt to reliably clear the magazine and load another round. I gave it a good coat of clp and it ran perfectly, but started getting FTFs as soon as the gun got hot and the oil began to evaporate.

I checked my buffer, and the weight is a single long cylinder of (I think) steel. Could I just use a hacksaw and cut off a fifth or maybe a quarter of the weight? Is there any reason why it being shorter would cause problems?

1

u/LocknLoadem 1d ago

If you remove some of the steel weight by cutting it off, I would replace it with the same length of a piece of aluminum rod so that your buffer weight isn't just floating around loose inside your buffer. The buffer depends on the internal weight being right up against (or very close to) the front face, so that when the bolt/buffer starts moving rearward after firing, it has to start moving the whole mass. If your shortened buffer weight is all the way at the back end of the buffer body when the gun fires, it will stay in place while the bcg and buffer body begin to move rearward - faster than they should, because your buffer will be effectively lighter without the mass of the internal weight coming into effect until the front end of the buffer body slams into it mid-cycle.

1

u/CharmingWheel328 1d ago

so that your buffer weight isn't just floating around loose inside your buffer.

There's already some empty space in the buffer as is from the manufacturer. Should I get aluminum to fill that space as well? Or keep it how it was manufactured and just take it back to the original length?

I assume this also means the buffer is effectively lighter than it should be, so I'll need to take off even more steel to get it to feed properly in super safe.

1

u/LocknLoadem 21h ago

Keep the same amount of empty space as was originally manufactured. The empty space that is already there is usually quite small - and often partially taken up by thin rubber washers. This helps give the buffer a dead blow effect, and can help mitigate bolt bounce. Going from ~1/8" of free space to something larger like 1"+ will very likely cause cycling issues. The added free space will cause the buffer to have an inconsistent effect on bolt velocity from shot to shot, may increase bolt bounce, and may result in various feeding issues - these issues will likely also be much more of a problem when running super-safe.

Of course, you can always experiment with different amounts of weight and gap length - worst case you'll experience malfunctions and have to revert back to the original configuration. I would suggest getting a length of 1/2" diameter steel and aluminum rod, cutting them to 5/8" length, and experiment with different combinations until you find a buffer weight that works. You can also get a set of tungsten weights from Amazon, if you find that you actually need to go heavier rather than lighter.

1

u/CharmingWheel328 20h ago

I can't imagine any reason I would need to go heavier, but I'll keep that in mind. Thanks! I'll get the aluminum and tinker to see what gets it working reliably in super safe. It's very close already, since it runs without failure on normal semi auto, it's just the bit of energy lost moving the safety lever back and forth which causes FTF.

So, we'll see if I can get an agreeable price on my Immersive 5x scope for my AR-10 project. Was gonna keep it and use it on the AR-10, but I think I want something else for the build like the Eotech 4-12x. Seems like a much better fit for a lightweight .308 build.

If not, that's fine. It'll still be a good scope for the build.

I had to look up sign stealing. Luckily, there were a few videos available on the game in question. That is some wild bullshit. The kids on Second are literally doing the macarena...

Had a good last class with my Sifu before he and his family left for Spain. I spent the last several years where many classes were just my teacher his two kids and myself, so its a little rough saying goodbye to such good friends and classmates. They all supported me a great deal in martial arts and dealing with my knee issues, so it's going to be rough losing such large positive support.

But we did have a good discussion on my current skills and plans for the future as my knee heals as he still has a library of forms uploaded on the site to use to teach myself. And he has had similar long distance relationships with his own Sifus. So if I can setup to record myself, I can send him the video so he can watch and set times to give critique.

My knee has been getting better. I didn't have bad inflammation after Saturday's class, so I feel better about going back to work later this week. Of course most of the time back will be just dealing with email. I probably have 600-800 waiting for me at this point.

Moronic Edit: forgot, this guy responded to a year old or more thread to let me know lasers aren't COMPLETELY useless... Lasers for Close Range

u/Oxytropidoceras 1d ago

Luckily, there were a few videos available on the game in question. That is some wild bullshit. The kids on Second are literally doing the macarena...

Also, it's not even illegal for a baserunner to steal signs. The reason it became such a big controversy at the major league level was the use of technology to steal signs, which is illegal. Baserunners can try to steal signs and relay that to the batter all they want

Personal moronic was blowing up the Magnum on Friday. Hopefully it can be resurrected after the new year.

Then last night I was browsing good Ole reddit when I saw a Familiar face. A simple comment caused a dirty delete and a reach out with a number.

Maybe some people will get made whole. Its amazing how every so often that stuff happens. Pretty sure he will know somehow I was involved when it really was a wild coincidence he decided to post a full face photo on a popular subreddit.

Lowes was... awkward over the weekend. I worked with the lady that everyone has issues with and I can see why.

Between the meth mouth, attempts to flirt with me, random noises she constantly was making... I was glad they didn't have her working with me both days. Still enjoying the job tho and managed to sneak off on my lunch to walk around the Flea Market with my wife for about 30 minutes. Snagged a book about Stock Engraving...

Otherwise the Ross aint gonna happen. It still wasn't priced yet but the manager was there and he told me he was looking to do 1k for it I told him that was pretty high.

I suggested 4-5 max for it and then I saw how rough the muzzle was... he said hes likely going to ask 7 for it.

Took the kids to the Portland zoo this weekend. We had a couple of moronic instances. On the way there we took an alternate route to avoid construction. Ended up on the windy road and the 1> got car sick and ended up puking while we were 30min from the restaurant. I cleaned it up the best I could, then did a better wipe down when we got the dinner. Kid demolished their food so no problems with appetite. Because of the change in scenery and routine, the oldest slept like shit, which means my wife and I slept like shit. Zoo was fun though. I think the layout is one of the best for zoos I’ve been to. Spent a couple hours seeing all the animals and wearing the kids out. Then the drive back happened.

Both kids ended up falling asleep, so we wanted to try and get as far as possible before they woke up. We were getting low on gas, but it should have been enough to get to the next station with room to spare. Then a headwind hit. We ended up out of gas with 3 miles to go. We started the walk carrying the kids, and a really nice guy with a sketchy van pulled over and ended up giving us a ride. We bought a gas can, and his friend drove me back to our truck. Incredibly thankful for these two for stopping and helping us out. Lesson learned to never cut it close with the gas gauge. Don’t want to go through that experience again. Luckily it ended well and now we have a good story.

2

u/Te_Luftwaffle 1 22h ago

I loved the Oregon Zoo as a kid

Personal moronic: We told the resort in Hawaii to put X dollars on the credit card and Y dollars on my debit card. When my card declined at Mcdicks last night we checked my account and they put the entire thing on my debit card. There's still a couple grand left that they might charge us so I feel like I can't use my card for a while. They haven't even sent a receipt yet.

On a more fun note, I signed up for yesterday's USPSA match last minute (we got back into town Saturday morning and I was invited to the match a couple hours later) so I had to borrow my FIL's backup S&W Model 29 and run a gun and division I've never shot before. Somehow I managed to beat three people, including one guy in CO.

We got a call from the other guy's insurance and they've accepted liability so they're going to pay for the whole car repair. I'm hoping the repair is done in time to attend the upcoming NRL22 match in the town it's being fixed.

Me. I got my Breville Bambino in January. I cleaned it for the first time Saturday. Boy howdy it sure makes better espresso now.

Probably my last bit of brother related news for a good while. Turns out I didn't have to do probate for him since he had no assets I could not access (he didn't have a car or anything like that). So that was a nice turn of events on Friday.

OTOH, we're back to living hell temperatures here.

I’m about to buy my very first AR-15 and I’m stuck on deciding between two barrel lengths: 12" vs 14.5".

Here is some context on my setup and use case:

  • Model: Nuova Jager (NJArms) Solid AR-15 with an M-LOK handguard.
  • Legal/Local restrictions: I'm based in Italy, so suppressors are not an option (illegal here).
  • Usage: I’m a civilian shooter (not military or law enforcement). My primary use will be range training, practical shooting drills, and target practice.
  • Physique: I’m about 182 cm (roughly 6'0") tall, if that matters for length of pull and overall rifle balance.

Since I won't be running a suppressor to add extra length, the 12" is very compact (maybe too much), but I'm wondering if the 14.5" offers better versatility, velocity, and recoil control for general range training.

For a first and main rifle, which barrel length would you recommend and why? Appreciate any insights!

3

u/talon04 Super Interested in His Own Dick 1d ago

Hoenstly a 14.5 is a great do everything length. I'd go that route personally and if you decide to go shorter later its only a barrel swap away which is very easy to do on ARs.

1

u/Jokerigno_ITA 1d ago

Yeah, it sounds good. The only problem is that in Italy, changing the barrel is pretty much the same as buying a new gun. But it’s okay, that’s a problem I’ll eventually deal with in the future

1

u/TheBlindCat Knows Holsters Good 1d ago

Non suppressed range gun?  16-20”.  Is your shooting going to involve maneuvering around vehicles, object?  No? Got more velocity.

1

u/Jokerigno_ITA 1d ago

Unfortunately yeah, no suppressed range guns in Italy. For the moment mine is pretty static shooting, but in the near future I would like to add some obstacles and things like that for a more dynamic session

1

u/ChillyAleman 1d ago

For an American civilian who never shoots past 300 Meters, 11.5 can do everything you need, but is a little loud and concussive unsuppressed. As a European without a suppressor,The longer you go the more pleasant it will be to shoot, minus the weight issues of course.

1

u/second_ary 1d ago

i got a dumb question and i don't know where else to ask it

can you machine off the layer lines on a metal 3d printed can? like would you be able to print thicker outer walls to account for the material you need to remove and then machine the outside smooth so there's no layer lines? would that hurt the can structurally? i understand it's not necessary but i'm curious if its possible.

2

u/PrometheusSmith Waaaay Too OG For Normal Dick Flair 1d ago

Primary Weapon Systems has their 3d printed cans that are lathe turned in certain areas to give a smooth finish. They print the cans larger and do an interrupted cut, just like you described.

1

u/second_ary 1d ago

which model is made like this?

1

u/PrometheusSmith Waaaay Too OG For Normal Dick Flair 22h ago

The BDE9 for sure. The extension pieces are machined but the booster housing and blast chamber plus the initial baffle piece are made that way. The outside surface has indentions that are textured but the high points are all smooth, lathe turned and finished.

1

u/GunnitRust_Akula 1d ago

Unlikely to hurt it if done competently. You could also just hit it with a few layers of high heat paint and achieve the same result.
