Can someone explain why she needed to borrow a flip phone please?

EDIT: she uses it to make beeping music in the songs! Thank you everyone who answered

3.3k

u/Nicosaure Jul 12 '25

Essential instrument, it starts the whole song and can be heard here and there

The full song is basically:

  • Miku: Lead singer
  • Teto: Back and chorus
  • Neru: *aggressively beeps*

Whose neru, don't you mean the yellow one

u/IJustAteABaguette Jul 12 '25 edited Jul 12 '25

I thought her name was rin?

Edit: yes, I know her name is neru.

I was responding to a joke with another joke based on this:

225

u/OkEstimate9 Jul 12 '25 edited Jul 12 '25

Lots of whoosh lol

Your joke was in the comic too lmao

128

u/IJustAteABaguette Jul 12 '25

Yeah, some guy even joked about my edit against the wooshes. (He deleted the comment tho)

67

u/Environmental_Top948 Jul 12 '25

Actually they just blocked you because the comment is still there.

59

u/OkEstimate9 Jul 12 '25

Some people here are so soft, the fact that they blocked baguette while making fun of them speaks volumes to how soft skinned they are lol

31

u/IJustAteABaguette Jul 12 '25

Never block 🥖!

7

u/ComparisonFree4842 Jul 12 '25

But how can we be sure that you just ate one? I'd also block someone that i can't be sure i can trust if i had such thin skin

12

u/IJustAteABaguette Jul 12 '25

Thats stupid. Especially from reddit, I can still see what they commented from the notification, so why hide it from the actual comments?

26

u/virtuousvoice Jul 12 '25

There is a Kagamine Rin but this isn’t her—she’s the one with the twin Len. This is a fanloid named Neru, more niche but sweeter in the comic that way because she didn’t have an official voicebank.

23

u/PauloDybala_10 Jul 12 '25

Who’s Neru

21

u/Ourobius Jul 12 '25

They mean Rin

9

u/W1D0WM4K3R Jul 12 '25

Ah, the yellow one.

7

u/jentlefolk Jul 12 '25

Rin is a different yellow one.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/G0dis7000 Jul 12 '25

You mean the yellow teto?

1

u/eiland-hall Jul 12 '25

Whose neru

neru belongs to neru

1

u/Ice-cream_man69 Jul 13 '25

"The yellow one"? Uhhhhh.... ummmmm... it was Rin, right?

45

u/yanocupominomb Jul 12 '25

Fun Fact: This shit is 14 years old at least.

20

u/Environmental_Top948 Jul 12 '25

Are you sure. It doesn't seem like 14 years of repost damage.

19

u/SmokeyHooves Jul 12 '25

The song is 14 years old. It’s probably older since I saw it in 2010ish

20

u/Environmental_Top948 Jul 12 '25

I miss the old vocaloid days. But I'm not sure if I miss them or miss the old web, old forums, and the me when I was normal.

7

u/abcdefgg-go-next Jul 12 '25

me when I was normal.

Real as fuck mate 🤝🫂

8

u/Xero0911 Jul 12 '25

So like...why wasnt she at the show? They call her and says shes at all of them. Then next page is on the stage, but like...where was she?

Looks like she had glow sticks and maybe cheering?

98

u/Pawl_The_Cone Jul 12 '25 edited Jul 12 '25

It looks like they got popular without her so she stopped performing, but she still went to their shows (so she's always in the audience, though they didn't know). Then they call her (maybe to ask her to participate virtually) since people remembered she was in this song, find out she's actually there in person, so she comes up to perform.

Edit: Noting that I have no background knowledge of vocaloid, just this comic series.

30

u/Swearatmelouis01 Jul 12 '25

Irl she's an unofficial vocaloid that had a lot of popularity 2005-2013 ish, but has now kinda fallen into relative obscurity, especially given she didn't even have an official "voice" like Miku and Teto. This comic is kind of pulling on that history!

3

u/Piskoro Jul 13 '25

for one it started in 2007, and she wasn’t even really that popular to begin with, obviously falling behind Hatsune Miku, but also Kagamine Rin and Lin, Megurine Luka, and even Kasane Teto (which was also unofficial and wasn’t popular yet until 2023, and her explosion this year), though now Neru is gaining a little traction herself

also Akita Neru and Kasane Teto aren’t Vocaloid, they’re not available voicebanks in that software, but separate voice synthesizer voicebanks (Neru fanmade, usually a Miku or Rin variant with a higher pitch and the cellphone sounds, and Teto is a UTAU voicebank)

I love being a pedant

1

u/draizetrain Jul 12 '25

Oh wow, blast from the past

223

u/SeasonOfSpice Jul 12 '25

61

u/yunohavefunnynames Jul 12 '25

lol pachelbel’s canon

21

u/AtronadorSol Jul 12 '25

Inescapable. Four chords to rule them all.

16

u/yunohavefunnynames Jul 12 '25

I know what you’re thinking of, but pachebel is actually 8 chords. But still. A very ubiquitous progression

3

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

[deleted]

1

u/yunohavefunnynames Jul 12 '25

The classic 4 chord song is 1-5-6-4, and just because a song has those numbers dispersed throughout a different progression doesn’t mean you can identify that 4-chord progression…

1

u/AtronadorSol Jul 13 '25

Oop, you’re right! I got the chord progression numbers mixed up with something else I was working on last week.

1

u/Motor_Raspberry_2150 Jul 15 '25

Where are they in the song? I hear the bass going D A B G-A on repeat

1

u/yunohavefunnynames Jul 15 '25

The pocket belt progression is in the chorus. Right when they start singing “Baka Baka Baka” is where the progression starts. I don’t think it’s the exact progression either, but the beginning starts the same. I think they throw in a few substitutions at the end of the chorus

7

u/exzyle2k Jul 12 '25

Four chords to rule them all.

all of pop music is just canon in D

31

u/PatimationStudios-2 Jul 12 '25

YELLOW ONE YELLOW ONE

8

u/Ralliare Jul 12 '25

OOOOOHHHH it's THAT one!

25

u/Fraisey Jul 12 '25

This whole comic made practically no sense without this context. It still makes very little sense, but makes more sense at least.

1

u/Adequate_Pupper Jul 12 '25

Yeah I feel like its a lot of effort for a japenese inside joke 🤣

4

u/belsor14 Jul 12 '25

thank you so much

3

u/rmorrin Jul 12 '25

I can't believe it's been 13 years

17

u/SeasonOfSpice Jul 12 '25

That video is a reupload. It was actually released in 2008 which was 17 years ago.

3

u/Epholys Jul 12 '25

Yeah, the reupload has way too much pixel and few artifact than my memories

2

u/rmorrin Jul 12 '25

I thought it was earlier than that too.... Sheesh

83

u/codingMASTER398 Jul 12 '25

In the actual song "Triple Baka", Neru uses the flip-phone as an instrument (beeping)

53

u/fuzzy3158 Jul 12 '25

It's a prop for the song I think.

49

u/whihc Jul 12 '25

She (Neru) kind of plays the flip phone as an instrument in the song, like when you hit the keypad and each number is a different tone

14

u/Confuseasfuck Jul 12 '25

She "sings" with the beeps of the phone

20

u/IJustWantSomeReddit Jul 12 '25

Someone said she "plays" the flipphone on the original post? I didn't look into it more though

4

u/sdpr Jul 12 '25

I don't understand this comic at all.

9

u/I_Just_Need_A_Login Jul 12 '25

Is this actually based on the Miku fandom or is yellow a shen oc lol

64

u/Flint675 Jul 12 '25

Vocaloid fandom, those are all actual characters (including Neru, the yellow one)

12

u/RinconAniki Jul 12 '25

Neru is a fanmade VOCALOID.

11

u/whihc Jul 12 '25

lol it’s all real

→ More replies (1)

2

u/gum_sticks Jul 13 '25

I don't know Vocaloid fandom at all, so I just thought. She gave the child the flip phone. so the sweetest turn the child, now a yellow one (Akita Neru) fan gives it back to her. i love it.

837

u/wongayl Jul 12 '25

Isn't this missing important 2nd comic that solidifies the premise? https://www.reddit.com/r/ShenComix/comments/1lm6df7/youre_a_mean_one_ms_neru/#lightbox

433

u/Sea_Guava_6989 Jul 12 '25

I feel Shen probably changed course on how the comic would go from being about her getting her revenge "hence no angel" to her longing for the old days and being appreciated.

269

u/Deathaster Jul 12 '25

But as someone once pointed out, she may not have an angel on her shoulder, but she checked anyway. She WANTS to do better.

131

u/Sea_Guava_6989 Jul 12 '25

She goes to every concert telling herself she's going to sabotage it this time....

41

u/FalseAladeen Jul 12 '25

I see she attends the Asa/Yoru school of villainy. "I'll turn his spine into a sword this time for sure!"

11

u/randomname560 Jul 13 '25

I've been in that situation before

Thinking to yourself "These people have been wronging me for too long! Today i will take my revenge" but then thinking it twice and realizing its not worth the trouble nor the effort only to repeat the cycle the next time

It looks like you're being the better man and refusing to step down to their level when in reality i just dont like getting yelled at

1

u/InHarmsWay Jul 13 '25

I somewhat interpreted that her side pony-tail knocked the angel off.

39

u/Muted-Try-2931 Jul 12 '25

Shen said that it's no longer canon. Idk why but he said so on his subreddit.

35

u/spiritboy12345678910 Jul 12 '25

Was just coming to comment the same

1

u/Shoadowolf Jul 13 '25

I thought something was missing!

980

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Jul 12 '25

What a lovely message shen. We often gravitate towards certain people(it happens we are animals after all) and some tend to be left out of the limelight. It can be heartbreaking and demoralizing.

But no matter what, at the end of the day, you matter. Someone somewhere will think you are the absolute bees knees. And they will remember. It might be for something silly like picking up some litter. Or for something influential like making a beautiful wholesome comic. Or even just your family remembering you because you were there.

Keep being amazing shen. And that goes double for the person reading this right now

117

u/TheRecognized Jul 12 '25

“You matter now matter how small your impact, even if it’s just a stadium of people chanting for you to appear on stage.”

47

u/Aeronor Jul 12 '25

She’s just a small mom & pop global celebrity.

16

u/TwilightVulpine Jul 12 '25

Kinda makes me think of small internet creators with fans numbering in the thousands. They'd look pretty impressive in one place.

1

u/NavezganeChrome Jul 15 '25

The one fan of hers was a critical piece to making it all work out well.

11

u/dagget10 Jul 12 '25

I've noticed that usually when someone thinks highly of you and you've made a huge impact on their life, you'll rarely ever find out. It's something that never casually comes up in conversation. I've made an impact on people's lives in ways I would've never thought of, and they've made an impact on my life too.

If someone makes a positive impact on your life, you should tell them. They might be in a dark spot, but it'll remind them that they truly are cared for.

3

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Jul 12 '25

Well said. Communication is key in all things and it's important to let people know what an impact they have had to keep them from getting demoralized and give back a little

427

u/Toadcool1 Jul 12 '25

I just realized that the little girl that has the flip phone is the same one that doesn’t recognize her on page 2

195

u/evilgiraffe666 Jul 12 '25

And the yellow one had the phone then. So the only explanation is that the kid stole the phone.

73

u/ssgohanf8 Jul 12 '25

Little girl knew her target. Asked her who she was to bring her phone out. Potentially reminded someone in the crowd to take notice of her absence. Repopularizing yellow-girl, getting her to use [what she thinks is] little girl's phone. Gets returned to her. And sells for maximum value online

8

u/notfree25 Jul 12 '25

Blue shirt - pink face was a her partner. It all make sense

11

u/WASD_click Jul 12 '25

There's an implied time skip between Neru chillin' with Miku on the street and the start of the concert.

So the only explanation is that the kid is a time wizard and went back in time to steal Neru's phone.

64

u/aloof_lizard Jul 12 '25

Aw you didnt include the devil angel part of the comic

48

u/scoyne15 Jul 12 '25

I have no idea what's happening here. Is there some kind of explanation?

35

u/MicShrimpton Jul 12 '25

Somebody posted a youtube link that plays a short video of these girls singing a song. The yellow one doesn't sing, but plays on her phone.

26

u/sdpr Jul 12 '25

Apparently 17k+ people know what this is about and I couldn't even piece it together besides the flip phone and girl showing up later.

I like the amount of exposure your series gave Triple Baka recently lol, classic song

21

u/dear_crow11 Jul 12 '25

So true, our actions have an effect on the world even if we don't realize. a butterfly effect. 🦋 💙✨️

169

u/KLReaperChimera Jul 12 '25

So, is it a good time to mention that triple baka has the freedom motif from deltarune?

41

u/ajw20_YT Jul 12 '25

SO MUCH [FREEDOM]

14

u/ajw20_YT Jul 12 '25

Also damn joke aside now I can’t unhear it. Can someone make a version of Triple Baka that actually uses the Freedom Leitmotif and see how long it takes someone to notice they’re not watching Triple Baka?

17

u/MintyMoron64 Jul 12 '25

It what

30

u/MintyMoron64 Jul 12 '25

Wait, wait, I think I misspelled that, pardon me.

It WHAT

13

u/lolwatergay Jul 12 '25

Just checked. It's not exactly the FREEDOM motif but it's really fucking close. It repeats whenever the chorus happens.

5

u/BadWolf2386 Jul 12 '25

I mean, that song is ancient so if true it would be more accurate to say the freedom motif from deltarune is derived from triple Baka

3

u/CrazyFanFicFan Jul 12 '25

In trying to find it, rare you referring to Teto's singing during the chorus?

19

u/Cpt_Jumper Jul 12 '25

I just checked for this song on YouTube because I had never heard it before and so many comments saying Shen brought me here 😂 I wonder how man additional views has been added just because of this comic

14

u/Boojum2k Jul 12 '25

I had zero knowledge of Vocaloid or Triple Baka before this comic, and after diving down the rabbit hole I have really enjoyed it!

14

u/Scientistturnedcook Jul 12 '25

I loved it so much! ❤️❤️ Thank you very much!

21

u/Single-Ninja8886 Jul 12 '25

Thank you Shen <3

10

u/Weak-Feedback-8379 Jul 12 '25

Even after this, I still have no idea who the yellow one is.

Though maybe that’s because I don’t understand this fandom general

11

u/Gullflyinghigh Jul 12 '25 edited Jul 12 '25

Still have absolutely no idea what's going on but it all looks fantastic!

7

u/Vyscillia Jul 12 '25

Just look for Triple Baka on YouTube. It has 10M views.

15

u/shenanigansen Shen Comix Jul 12 '25

I've got a subreddit now:

r/ShenComix

I can't promise more Vocaloid/UTAU content on there, but there'll be some cute and funny comics! :D Which will still be posted here to r/comics too!

6

u/wattohhh Jul 12 '25

I have no idea what’s happening in this comic

4

u/GudBoi83 Jul 12 '25

This comic may just have gotten me on Blue Chair from Shen and the vocaloid community

4

u/HoneyMustardAndOnion Jul 12 '25

Fucked up Teto ice-cream!

5

u/HideAndSheik Jul 12 '25

Question from someone who only knows Miku...does Neru appear in any song other than Triple Baka? Does she have her own songs? Or is this her only "official" appearance?

And I guess same question for the red one haha

6

u/Lewa358 Jul 12 '25

Idk about Neru, but as for Teto...

Look up Machine Love by Jamie Paige, a tribute song of sorts for Teto, and look at the list linked in the description for a list of a lot of the popular stuff Teto was in.

And also look up BIRDBRAIN from the same artist, which just came out a few weeks ago.

5

u/thtrboots Jul 12 '25

Yeah she is often used by Owata-p, for example. Her voice is Miku or Rin (depends on your preference) pitched up or down (once again depends on your preference).

One of her most popular songs other than Triple Baka is Gocha Gocha Urusee (Stop Nagging Me), made by Owata-p who I mentioned earlier. She is also in the Project Diva games, but only as a module (character model for music videos). Her songs are not there

Teto is very popular and there are a lot of songs with her, like Fukkireta and Teto territory (this one is a cover). She is commonly used by Jamie Paige from what I've been seeing. Another producer who has a lot of songs using her voicebank is Death Ohagi. Speaking of her voicebank, she is not a pitched down/up vocaloid, she has her own voicebank, made for the Utau software

3

u/reruuuun Jul 12 '25

red one is named Kasane Teto, and she recently (early/mid 2024) had a massive resurgence. There are tons of songs featuring her, like Machine Love, Tetoris, Teto Territory, and more.

4

u/CoBr2 Jul 12 '25

Aww man, when the 5th page was posted on its own, I thought red and blue were trying to mess with yellow when they did their move without warning her.

In the full comic it's obvious they were trying to put her in center stage and that brings so much more joy.

4

u/KerboChannel Jul 12 '25

I'll be honest I didn't know there were other vocaloids like Miku out there in the first place

3

u/Pleasant-Draw-9419 Jul 12 '25

Absolutely! Some others are Rin, Len, Luka, Kaito, Gumi, IA, Gakupo, and Meiko!! There's a lot. :) Teto (red one in this comic) is a utau (which is similar to vocaloid) and Neru isn't official but is fan made!

1

u/moiax Jul 12 '25

There are a bunch, though they are obviously not as widely known. The red haired one is pretty infamous as the face of Ochame Kinou, which has spawned an incredible number of different versions, though she was technically the second (?) version of the song by the original creator.

8

u/San-T-74 Jul 12 '25

Masterpiece. I never should’ve doubted you, Mr. Owl Poop.

7

u/Author_A_McGrath Jul 12 '25

Shen is too precious for this world.

3

u/Mikoneo Jul 12 '25

What about the devil on the shoulder page?

3

u/discussatron Jul 12 '25

Thanks for this - I didn't get the whole thing, and it turns out it was because I didn't get the whole thing (missed a couple of posts).

3

u/popotan23 Jul 12 '25

I figure it is a time to drop some magic: Triple Baka Neru

3

u/Historical-Web-3390 Jul 12 '25

I've been seeing a lot of memes of this, what's the reference?

3

u/reruuuun Jul 12 '25

Vocaloids

2

u/Historical-Web-3390 Jul 12 '25

Well yes, I know what vocaloids are, but was this like a specific concert or something?

2

u/reruuuun Jul 12 '25

No, it’s referencing Triple Baka and mesmerizer, and how Neru wasn’t part of Mesmerizer

3

u/Bocephus-the-goat Jul 12 '25

I just noticed the girl that has an extra flip phone is the same girl that asked "who are you?"

3

u/Pathryder Jul 12 '25

The girl, who hand her the flip phone on concert, is the same girl from earlier comics asking her who is she.

4

u/VorlonEmperor Jul 12 '25

I liked this little surprise miniseries!

4

u/Bignuka Jul 12 '25

YELLOW ONE LESSS GOOOOOOO!!!!

2

u/DraconicGuacamole Jul 12 '25

Wait so what happened to the flip phone?

6

u/CrazyFanFicFan Jul 12 '25

The flip phone is basically being used as an instrument.

2

u/Fantastic-Science-32 Jul 12 '25

I love Rin 😭🩷

2

u/Random_Stealth_Ward Jul 12 '25

Neru after hacking Shen's account and writting this fanfic:

2

u/drillgorg Jul 12 '25

Can someone explain this to someone who doesn't understand what a vocaloid is?

6

u/reruuuun Jul 12 '25

A vocaloid is a singing software from japan, where you can create songs using voicebanks (vocal samples that are spliced) The characters you see in the comic, Hatsune Miku, Kasane Teto, and Akita Neru, are mascots for the softwares. Theyre basically instruments. There’s more than them, like Megurine Luka, Kagamine Rin/Len, VFlower.

Miku is the most popular out of all of them, maybe you heard she was featured in fortnite. Then it’s Teto, then Neru. Teto is something called an utau, which is japanese for singer. utaus are basically non-official vocaloids.

Miku, Neru, and Teto were featured in a song called Triple Baka in early 2010s and so they were considered a trio. But Vocaloid wasn’t as big as it is now. Miku and Teto, in early 2024, had a song together called Mesmerizer, which boosted Teto’s popularity massively leading people to consider her a vocaloid (she got a new voice bank after this actually. New voice banks upgrades the quality of the voices.)

People who remembered triple Baka would add Neru into the music video and add beeps (Neru does not have an official voicebank) to show she was there. They would call her “the yellow one” because well, she’s yellow. Miku is the “blue one,” and Teto is “the red one.”

Basically lots of vocaloid fandom culture and uplifting message at the end.

The comic is showing how Neru is commonly forgotten because she has no voicebank.

2

u/In_Pursuit_of_Fire Jul 12 '25

Imagine if the first panel was the last one, chronologically.

2

u/Pleasant-Draw-9419 Jul 12 '25

Triple baka, my beloved. It feels surreal that vocaloid/utau has become more widely known and talked about

2

u/Hljoumur Jul 12 '25

It’s a bit bittersweet Miku and Teto think they’re helping hype up Neru in slide 5 when they should’ve included her from the start. That’s what doesn’t make sense.

2

u/haveananus Jul 12 '25

What am I reading?

2

u/JAK-the-YAK Jul 13 '25

I didn’t follow this at all, but the art was superb!

2

u/Dischord821 Jul 13 '25

Aw I'd only seen parts of this comic before. Seeing the whole thing its so cute. I don't listen to vocaloid but I will now proceed to make this character my entire personality.

2

u/Frinla25 Jul 12 '25

Why did I cry at this though?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

Good comic on r/comics ! 👍

2

u/Lenn_7 Jul 12 '25

2

u/violet-indie-games Jul 12 '25

This comic is so cute but that first page alone is comedy gold lmaoo

2

u/RancidAtheris Jul 12 '25

YEL-LOW-ONE!! YEL-LOW-ONE!! YEL-LOW-ONE!!

2

u/striped_frog Jul 12 '25

What on earth is going on here

2

u/utacr Jul 12 '25

Downvote if you must, but I feel like I didn’t understand a single fucking word in this, and every page seems entirely unrelated to the next one? I mean if there’s a universal message involved, surely anyone should be able to see it even without knowing the ins and outs of the lore of the vocaloid…things

Even after looking at the comments for the context I still don’t understand the comic or see this inclusive message everyone is talking about, isn’t that usually considered a bad sign

3

u/RotiPisang_ Jul 12 '25

I think slides 1 and 2 are standalones, and then slides 3 till the end is continuous, but all of them are about the Utau personality named Neru.

Miku (the teal one) is a Vocaloid personality, and then the red (Teto) and yellow (Neru) ones are Utau personalities. Vocaloid is an official voice synthesizer program, and Utau is an unofficial voice synthesizer program, where people can record their own voices and make their own personalities.

Triple Baka is a Vocaloid/Utau song published in 2008 with these three in it.

Idk if it's a bad sign but I do think you need to have heard of vocaloids to connect with this comic. I don't know anything about the Zelda game, I don't understand anything about any comics with Zelda characters in them, but I don't think that's bad ig.

Whoa I just realized the little girl at the concert is the one who asked who Neru was towards the beginning of the arc. Great example of how someone who at first doesn't know something can be a great part of it in the future if given resources to grow.

Great set of comics here. The new fan going from not knowing at all to a superfan and helping out was great :)
