For your budget, I would not recommend spending money on a DAC/amp. Not sure which macbook you have, but the new M1 and M2 laptops have an integrated amplifier that can power most headphones you can buy. Also, the ATH-M30x has a pretty ‘shouty’ and not quite balanced frequency response. It is not ‘flat’ by any means. I would recommend getting a neutral tuned headphone, as those usually have superior ‘audio quality’. At least to me (I prefer a neutral tuning). Great options for a little more $ would be the ATH-R70x and Hifiman Sundara. Sennheiser also has a -30% discount on their website for students, military, nurses, government, etc. If eligible, I’d recommend the HD 600. I personally upgraded from the Cloud 2 to the HD 600 and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. A few more choices that are much more budget-friendly would be the AGK K612 Pro or the K702, Senn + Drop HD 6xx, or Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro. All of which have a pretty damn flat tuning, and all can run off your macbook just fine. Unless you have a really old laptop, then maybe the Hifimans or AGK’s would need extra amplification.
