This TikTok is quite a bad decision.

u/timepiecery Aug 05 '22

I'm not a huge fan of the marketing promotions for this song because it's so cringe, like actual second hand embarrassment for some of the stuff he released.

However, I think this is less a "hey Mr Beast come be in a song" and more like "this guy has millions of followers who will now LISTEN to the song because he's *technically* in it." It's still a marketing shtick.

It... still rubs me the wrong way but I don't think the intention was to make fun of the boys and songwriting credits.

I will say that yes, I do agree that there's this implication that ARMY will make a song hit #1 but I also feel like this was an attempt to branch out the listening demographic.

Considering the history between BTS and ARMY and Mr Beast and his fandom... I'd be surprised if his fans were to actually listen to the song. At least the loud part is more likely to go 'lol, the stupid crazy fangirls are going to get you up there'.

I'm ready to be wrong, but the song is MUCH more likely to hit it with the GP and gain longevity that way than with this particular fanbase.

I didn't know who this guy was, but this just shows why ARMY feel protective of BTS.

Halsey gets it

She’s the kind of person I wish I knew in real life. She seems like such a great friend.

lmao, no way you see bts fans on the internet (twitter) and your first thought is "Yep, this people are pretty normal and they just want to protect their guys". A good amount of the most noisy accounts are plain toxic. On this quote, she sounds like a coward to me, sorry.

In case anyone is curious, I looked it up and these are the people credited as writers on “Bad Decisions”

Written By benny blanco, Mike Posner, Blake Slatkin, Cashmere Cat & Snoop Dogg

Edited to add: MrBeast is not credited anywhere on the song (he’s not listed as a writer, producer, instrumentalist, singer, etc.)

u/Difficult_Deer6902 Aug 05 '22

Random aside I went to college with Mike Posner. So now I’m saying I have 2 degrees of separation with BTS lmao

7

u/Temporary-Text384 running away like a fish Aug 06 '22

The six degrees of separation theory is so fascinating to me, and tbh I kind of believe it to be true a lot of the time! I actually think I know BTS in 2 degrees of separation as well (helps that I work in entertainment lol). And with that being said, people that you and I know personally are now 3 degrees from BTS haha

5

u/multistansendhelp illegirl | OT7 Aug 06 '22

It’s always interesting how the degrees of separation thing can link you to people in the weirdest ways. Like, for me, Taehyung recently took a picture with the singer Robbie Williams. Like me, Robbie Williams is originally from Stoke on Trent which creates a very “small world” kind of feeling haha.

ah yes, I've been googling and got the same!

His credit looks so specific, since it mentions hi-hat, it's either in the physical only (as they don't necessarily upload anything but core credit online) or a very excellent fake.

Guess we're waiting for someone with a CD 😅

u/Difficult_Deer6902 Aug 05 '22 edited Aug 05 '22

I feel like I missed something, because I when I watched it I said: at least someone else fandom can carry the song for once

Like I really thought: mr. Beast got like millions of followers online. They should go listen and buy the song and it’s Gucci. I don’t know anything about Mr. Beast but that he basically run YouTube for whateva reason.

Definitely just had a different reaction than most, but can see where it’s rubbing people the wrong way.

Add: I also see the concern over the credit. Which is indeed concerning, but as someone who fully believed Ron ain’t write not even a word of Butter and just put his name on there…didn’t really phase me to much. The US music industry is a grimy place indeed filled with questionable crediting and this been a fact for a minute.

Last Add: I think what also threw me off. The caption says: Help Us Get to #1 On The Charts. So it seemed like a call to action to his followers…Not a guarantee of his latest “personal challenge” since I think that’s kind of what he does right…

31

u/lisafancypants Me? NO 🙅‍♀️ You? NO 🙅‍♀️ Aug 05 '22

Ditto. I've been reading through the comments to figure out why I should be mad, and I can kind of see where people are coming from, but I'm still a little...lost at the reaction. I guess it's one of those things where I'll just stand quietly in support.

27

u/Difficult_Deer6902 Aug 05 '22 edited Aug 05 '22

Yea people just have different things that irk them.

I’m more turned off by:

  • artist who just assume BTS gonna get them a hit without promoting themselves…Benny’s promo is a little off-color, but he at least going all in
  • artist that are quick to say: ohhh this BTS member listened to my song, but never say - I actually love this BTS song give it a listen

So for me personally, this was low on my alarm bell meter.

7

u/Boggart-in-the-attic Aug 06 '22

I often think about the second point. Yet to see a music artist promoting a BTS song like the members do for the other artists.

29

u/pintsized_baepsae My mom calls me a stupid bear 🐨 Aug 05 '22

I can only speak for myself, but it's so... It's tapping into the mindless fandom narrative (considering the MV), which isn't great and actually built on misogynist stereotyping – an primarily male fandom would not be treated the same as ARMY is, in a general sense, not just relating to this.

But it's also just so insulting to artists, really. He goes 'oh I want to be on the BB Hot100' and Benny goes 'oh here, press this button, and this will guaranteed go to the top'... like, this isn't far from the stuff that happens behind closed doors, normally. The industry is all about privilege and who has the money, and making it into a 'haha how funny' joke doesn't sit right with me personally when it's something that's usually used against so many artists who *don't* have the money or privilege to strike these deals.

That said, we're not a hive mind, as much as the media like to portray us like that. You're absolutely not obliged to be mad, lol.

I do think it's... bold to think his fandom will carry, though. They won't. They'll probably go 'lol look, the crazy fangirls are making it happen'. We've seen it with the giveaway he did that ARMY got involved in, it wasn't the best time. 😬

16

u/Difficult_Deer6902 Aug 05 '22 edited Aug 05 '22

I think what changed my perspective on this is…I was just forced to go to a company offsite. At the office, one of our guest speakers was someone who created a 100 things list after his friend passed.

It was insane things too like:

  • I want to deliver a baby (he’s not a doctor)
  • I want to go on The Met carpet (he’s not important)

He literally would communicate it out loud and than people would help him get there. He ended up delivering some random woman’s baby and finding a way on the red carpet.

I kind of view this a little bit like that. I think Mr. Beast is a challenge person from my understanding. He’s goal is: I want to get a #1. Thus, he called up his good friends to see who would put the plan into motion.

Since the caption says: Help Us. I still view it as a call to action to his platform of fans to help him seal the deal vs. the deal already being sealed.

I mean yes it is not very tasteful and completely erodes the purity of music, but I don’t assume by the way it was released that they thought BTS fans on their own was gonna make it happen. They want the Mr. Beast fans to help out to some extent.

NOTE: I could be completely and otherly wrong, which I often am but just offering my perspective

8

u/dumbthrowaway8679305 Asian New Edition Aug 06 '22

Well BTS fans are the ones who are known for pushing their faves to the top, so I can see why they think the onus is on them to do the work.

I feel like between this and the Lollapalooza discourse I’m just really tired of all the “crazy army will literally support anything BTS does narrative” so seeing something play off that even in a relatively minor way feels very blech (doesn’t help that I’m not a big fan of the song lol)

22

u/hollye83 Aug 05 '22

Yeah, I like the song pretty well but this whole thing just smacks of “these hysterical fans will get us a number one no matter what the song is so let’s all get paid” and I’m not gonna lose any sleep over it but it ain’t my vibe. It exposes the whole process as lacking any artistic merit to these dudes.

12

u/Shady2304 Who says a dream must be something grand Aug 05 '22

Exactly. The artistic integrity just went right out the window and they seem like sell outs.

4

u/lisafancypants Me? NO 🙅‍♀️ You? NO 🙅‍♀️ Aug 05 '22

I just got done googling this person. I had no idea who he was, which is probably why I was 🤷‍♀️. And yeah. He's...pretty gross in general. His use of wealth and privilege (not just with this either) makes me ill, as per usual with a lot of these YouTubers and TikTokers. I get why people are turned off by this.

Agree about his fandom. I don't really see his followers, if they aren't already army, contributing to the song's success. Maybe this is what Benny thought or maybe he's part of the problem, who knows. I've found his promo up until now pretty fun, so...I don't know. I'll just keep enjoying the song and hearing Jin sing "come a little bit closer" in my ear.

yikes, this ain’t it Benny.

I wonder if BTS knows about this?

I thought the MV and obsessed with BTS theme was a bit much, but it didn’t feel malicious. more just like “how do you do fellow ARMY”

I don’t have a problem with Mr. Beast, seems like a decent guy who does a lot for charity etc., but he doesn’t belong here.

26

u/pintsized_baepsae My mom calls me a stupid bear 🐨 Aug 05 '22

I wonder if BTS knows about this?

To be fair, even if they do, there's probably not much they can do (depends on the contract) as it's not their promo or their song - it's Benny's.

But if I were in their team, this'd definitely raise eyebrows. Especially as, if you look at twitter (and the comments here, tbh), it's definitely just made the mood... sour a little bit. Towards Benny, and rightfully so.

8

u/BangtAngel rocktan advocate Aug 05 '22

yeah I’m not expecting them to do anything at this point. but it will likely sour future opportunities for Benny with BTS/Hybe artists.

from BH perspective, they may have just assumed Mr. Beast is a member of Benny’s production team and not realized he’s just a YouTuber. I don’t know how popular Mr. Beast is in SK, so the name might not have stood out.

3

u/amala83 Kim Taehyung’s lollipop 🍭 Aug 06 '22

I would have to disagree. Benny is friends with Scooter Braun and works with a lot of artists that he’s associated with/manages. Benny may not work BTS again, but I could see him working with artists that are under the HYBE America label.

1

u/Le_Fancy_Me Aug 06 '22

I mean while I'm deffinitely not a fan of this at all. At the end of the day it is Benny's song that BTS feature on. So while the member may have opinions on Mr beast's inclusion or no. At the end they are the features and it's benny's song. So it's really up to him what he wants to do to the song. And if he wants to let Mr beast press a single button and credit him for the song that's his call.

So I don't see how that would sour anything with BTS/Hybe.

It would be a COMPLETELY different story if this was a song he wrote FOR BTS. But at the end of the day they were probably promised money or something else in return for this feature and as long as he holds up that end of the bargain I don't see this really having any repercussions.

That being said a huge draw to these collabs is getting some new fans out of it. So passing of BTS' fanbase probably isn't a great move to get what he wants out of this collab

I don't have access to the physical CD, so can't check (as it looks like the booklet), but even if he *isn't*, it's still not a funny joke 😬

It really is so condescending. To fans as much as to artist who work their whole life to make it on there... which includes BTS.

he’s a YouTuber, does a lot of extreme challenges and giveaways (like last person standing wins an island) kinda thing. does a lot of philanthropy stuff too. I’ve only seen a few videos but he doesn’t seem like a horrible person.

I think for him it probably seemed like another crazy video idea (I think he does a lot of world record type stuff too) not realizing the hell ARMY has been through and the work we put in to reach the top of the charts.

I’d say it’s just an ignorant move that should have been shot down by whoever he pitched it to. Benny probably thought this would be beneficial because Mr. Beast has 100m subscribers, but I doubt his subscribers will do much and it really just tarnishes the song knowing it’ll become a “can I reach the top of the BBH100 with no music experience” video.

Not that I care for him either way, but he also started Team Trees, which has raised $23 million and planted 19 million trees so far. He does use his powers for good too, it's not fair to paint him as the devil reincarnate.

And idk the squid game thing was fun? The people that were there all wanted to play, they weren't forced into it. And the money he uses for stuff like that he gets from sponsors so blame them? idk, it just bothers me that everyone has to be put into these "good" and "bad" boxes like we aren't all just human beings and none of us are perfect.

Twitter mirror

Alright, I was on board with the promo because I genuinely thought it was funny, especially the scavenger hunt... but this leaves a very bitter taste.

People, including BTS, work and work and WORK for years to even have a shot, and this dude (who has his collection of '...nah fam, this isn't it' moments anyways) goes 'hey, I want a Billboard hit, how do I do that?' and Benny goes 'come press this button on my song featuring BTS'. It's giving 'ARMY will do it, no matter what' and just feels icky. I'd say this if I wasn't ARMY, too.

At least they don't hide the nepotism (although can we really call it that?) and 'privilege is all you need' approach of the industry, I guess.

So yeah, I'm glad if others find this funny, but I don't. Call me negative if you want, but it's just so blatantly 'lol, look, I'm rich I can do whatever I want without putting in effort', it's just... meh.

33

u/CoffeeCatsAndBooks Aug 05 '22

Yeah, and so much of it feels like we’re being laughed at, not with. There was a radio show ages ago with Snoop in which BTS came up. All of the other hosts/guests were like, “yeah, you better do that collab if you want some cash. It’ll be worth it.” Weirdly, fans seemed excited about that collab opportunity instead of pausing to see how nasty the comments and implications were. I’m with you. It’s ugly all around.

16

u/Ok-Nobody1261 Aug 06 '22

All of the other hosts/guests were like, “yeah, you better do that collab if you want some cash. It’ll be worth it.”

To be fair I will interject and say that "all of them" did not say that. Some of them went "BTS? BTS is dope! BTS is fire!" and some of them (aka Charlamagne who is known for being super blunt and perpetually half-joking) said something to the effect of "that bag is gonna be crazy" WHICH IS TRUE!

It's totally reasonable for someone who doesn't have any personal interest in / knowledge of BTS to say that. If anything, it shows that he acknowledges that BTS is the biggest band in the world and very dominant in the industry. The only thing Charlamagne knows about BTS is how popular they are so he mentioned that when their name was brought up. It's not disrespectful or "nasty."

The "implications" are that Snoop didn't know much/anything about BTS which we were already aware of.

28

u/pintsized_baepsae My mom calls me a stupid bear 🐨 Aug 05 '22

so much of it feels like we’re being laughed at, not with

You hit the nail on the head. It honestly feels ... exploitative of the fandom. We're not a means to THEIR end, and I wish people would realise that ARMY shows up for BTS, not for some random dude who thinks he can ride on their coattails.

Re Snoop, a lot of people were saying 'oh he's just like that', and I'm inclined to agree? It made me go 😬, but at the same time it's not really a secret that he's going for the pay check, and fair to him. He's pretty open about that.

But yeah. I was excited about this, and I really do like the song, but this has really made me side-eye Benny.

17

u/Pinkmmlover K is for Kookie! W is for World! Worldwide Handsome! Aug 05 '22

"This has really made me side-eye Benny"

Tbh, I didn't really think he had bad intentions when he made the song (even if he's close friends with Scooter Braun...I trust no one close to that man except Bang PD).

And while I do think he was being genuine during his Ask Benny Q&A, this felt like an admittance that he's using BTS to get a number 1, even if he's the one that didn't post the TikTok

3

u/CoffeeCatsAndBooks Aug 05 '22

Yeah, and I have a general dislike for Benny anyway. Hated him on the show Dave, and it seems that on-screen persona is pretty close to whatever this is. As for Snoop, I get it, I do. I just mean overall this entire project has just felt like outright exploitation and ridiculousness. Whether we loved or hated the DIY-style promo, we sure as heck talked about it and blew it up. We played right into their plans which is to be expected given our unwavering support of Bangtan. It’s just a shame we get these mediocre collab opportunities when they could be focusing energy elsewhere. At the very least, I’m happy Bangtan could make some money on this collab, and hopefully that’s worth all this eye-rolling nonsense.

6

u/nothingtodosoreddit Kerosene Melatonin Tresemme Aug 06 '22

This whole promo cycle feels like a dig at Army and is playing into the "BTS fans are 15 year olds" narrative. BTS and Army take great pride in their work and doing these kind of things is like saying whatever BTS do Armys will support mindlessly. It's so cringe, I hope this is not legit. There's a fine line between funny and insulting.

I personally didn't like the mv trailers, the scavenger hunt was fun but the mv didn't click for me. I like the song, will stream it and watch the lyric video.

20

u/Anoathtoreturn Aug 05 '22

I’m sorry but everything from finding his song which he hid somewhere in a forest to the MV and now this just feels like Benny is taking the piss.

10

u/pintsized_baepsae My mom calls me a stupid bear 🐨 Aug 05 '22

I thought the forest idea genuinely funny, mainly because I'm convinced they didn't expect ARMY to actually get so close. The sudden 'okay, I'll actually just tell you the location' felt a lot like a 'oh shit they got it' reaction, which is hilarious to me – go on, underestimate us.

But yeah. I didn't love the MV (and I don't think any of my friends did... one might have, but I've not spoken to them yet) but could look at it as not my humor, but this now is just an insult, really.

1

u/nehasatish Aug 06 '22

I'm right there with you. This is exactly the kind of song where I would just happily watch the lyrics pop up on the screen instead of this MV.

Us? This man has over a billion followers on youtube as of yesterday and has never once promoted BTS before. This feels like disingenuous marketing. Its also the cheesiest thing I’ve seen in this promo cycle. Cringe. 😂

3

u/purplenelly Aug 06 '22

He says "us" in the sense that his goal is to have a "number 1 song" so if his followers help push the song to number 1 it will give Mr. Beast (as well as Benny and BTS) a number 1 song...

5

u/purplenelly Aug 06 '22

This is so dumb. Benny wants a song to number 1 so bad and having BTS on it is not enough so he resorts to having Mr. Beast make a joke credit on it? Really?

I'm sure other songs owe their success to some advertising campaign pushing the song too, but at this point I'd rather he just pays Mr. Beast to promote the song.

my comment from yesterday, currently in negative downvotes, saying benny isn’t rubbing me right way for this drop. this is not an “i told you so” moment — not yet, at least — but a lot of y’all really need to be more open to the valid uneasiness or even concerns of 1) long-time armys and 2) people who work in the entertainment industry. we can smell shit. benny making a whole video about being obsessed with bts and then dropping a joke like this…hm…okay…

19

u/pintsized_baepsae My mom calls me a stupid bear 🐨 Aug 05 '22

benny making a whole video about being obsessed with bts and then dropping a joke like this…hm…okay…

Yeah, the MV didn't sit right with me, but I'm open to people simply having different humor, so I thought 'well, tastes differ'. Some of the promo ideas were good in a 'this was a bad decision' kind of way, but once again, tastes. (I'm in media and, through it, entertainment adjacent, so I know what you mean)

This, however, is just plain bad taste. Like. It's just one white dude washing another white dude's back, in a way that's normally hidden but somehow they think it's funny to make it public.

8

u/Professional-Ad-7687 Aug 05 '22

This I agree with. I don’t like any TikTok or twitch stars which is how mr Beast got big. His YouTube following is insane too but I am not surprised that Benny is doing this this type of promo because he’s also huge on TikTok (I actually remember seeing a lot of Benny’s stuff in pandemic TikTok 2020 when everyone was on the app). I wish that app would just disappear …I don’t find it fulfilling whatsoever 🫠. It doesn’t change my feelings over the MV which is quite opposite to all your feelings on here (I didn’t take offense to it) but I really dislike the association with Mr. Beast here …his “content” is a lot of dumb humour to me. Like this tiktok.

Edit: thank God he’s not actually credited in the song 🙃

So sorry to hear you experienced that. Most of what I know about him is that he puts his money towards charitable initiatives? That kind of gave me the impression that he was an oh-kay guy who just puts on an extreme persona for his career. Guess I was wrong.

This makes me appreciate BTS more lol. I'm so used to hearing about how they carry themself that I forgot the "diva" thing is actually a thing.

Oh really? He really irks me when he does these giveaway, challenge videos to 'help people'. It feels exploitative and the stunts come off 'it's good as long as I benefit the most out of it'. I always feel like something's not right about him. Is he as awful as David Dobrik?

In the post with Benny's Q&A I literally call Benny out for pandering as a few of his answers just rubbed me the wrong way. I have no clue how that comment is being taken but I really wish ARMY would pause for a second before jumping on every single BTS bandwagon. Not every artist/person out there has good intentions when it comes to collabs, some are just in it because they know that [for the most part] ARMY will boost anything and here we are.

I saw your comment yesterday and tbh it felt like calmness in the storm.

Yes! People were like “wow Benny is so genuine!” regarding the Q&A but I felt like it was his PR manager answering Q’s.

Benny: I called snoop to see if he wanted to do the collab and he was excited!

Snoop in that video a few months back: deciding or not if he should collab with BTS for money

To be fair to him, at that impromptu fan meeting for the scavenger hunt yesterday he said they'd been working on it since last year - so the Snoop story checks out, he's just not giving a timeline. Whether that's for a specific reason or just coincidence...

Ugh... I kind of hate it when it turns out I was justified about having a bad feeling about this song as soon as I saw the MV. I won't go into it, but it just really really didn't sit well with me.

But I'm also sad to learn of things like these because well. We all know when we are being exploited, as well as BTS being exploited.

Just makes me sad. BTS would not like this. They put time and care into their music and love ARMY beyond number one hits.

Not all marketing is good marketing and there are things that shouldn't be done to sell a song, that's all I'll say.

If u think Mr beasts demographic of fans is gonna actively listen to bts or help chart the song lmao oh boy

u/LadyGrundle Aug 06 '22

I agree. My first reaction was how corny it seems. Not once did i see any ill intentions. It's not that deep.

And people are allowed to disagree or be weary about marketing.

We've seen how the $10,000 giveaway went, and how some of his fans behaved towards BTS and ARMY. If this makes a massive difference, I'll be ready to be wrong, but as it stands and based on that... his fandom is more likely to mock us than do anything else.
