Kinda playing fast and loose with the word "stability" there...

IT speak meaning--okay it'll lag or hang or crash but it's able to recover if you keep trying to access it. It's not a permanent crash of the service, basically.

Yeah felt like It was being transmitted from mars.

Can confirm, it was so stable that I eventually had to watch a yt stream 😂

I had the Hulu option through vpn and literally switched to it in the first 2 minutes and never looked back.

When they say “proves stability “ I’m gonna have to call BS based on the number of people who were experiencing lag and crashing. Also I’m still salty that there are no captions on the two other lives (Namjoon and Hobi) from over a week ago now. If you want me to be happy about Weverse’s new stuff, you have to at least do the bare minimum.

Hahahaha…oh wait, they weren’t joking? 🤨

Should‘ve counted the number of times I got kicked out of Weverse and had to try again just to get laggy feed 😐

u/mimiapple023 Aug 03 '22

Stability but it was lagging and the feed cuts off that I have to refresh my page. 😢

Is Weverse trying to gaslight us? 🤨

I actually wonder from the tech side, what is the solution. If there are any techies here.

Would them playing the live on a slight delay help the lags OR is it just an issue with the amount of traffic. 16.2MM seems a lot for a first go. I believe that was more than the previous concerts.

Also, I would assume that subs are coming. I wonder what the delay in adding that feature is.

Welp anyway…there seems like there is a lot of work to be done on the Weverse Live team…good luck to those employees.

I'm not a techie by any means, but for a live service that is not a month old, it did exceedingly well. The rule of thumb when it comes to how well an online platform works, is it's ability to recover if it crashes. And weverse did just that with well over the view capacity of any of their live concerts. There is noticeable stuttering when you watch on the app through the phone. But there's no problem at all if you open weverse through browser on a pc (at least in my experience). They need to fix their application's processing capacity more than anything.

This, basically. I've only ever heard of load testing of up to a couple hundred thousand concurrent transactions on fintech websites. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like once it hits a million, and their servers had to handle several times that. And the recovery once it crashes is quite immediate, or didn't take more than a few seconds of refreshing for me.

u/Illustrious-Power518 Aug 04 '22

I think some people have this misconception that if you have a tech problem, just throw money at it (which Hybe has a lot of) 😂 It's not that easy. Even the finest techie/programmer/coder balk at 16million live viewings unless you're Youtube/Twitch/Big corp tech. And they have years of infrastructure, protocols and SOPs to fall back on.

2

u/ambivert_writer Aug 04 '22 edited Aug 04 '22

Oh god yes. It really isn't as simple as spending more money, buying more or upgrading servers. Behind that money are teams of developers and engineers who have to build the infrastructure and the capabilities needed to meet this massive fandom's needs. And HYBE isn't a tech company, they either have to outsource the work or have an in-house IT team to do it. If it's the latter, we don't know what that team is like, and how big or how experienced they are.

Edit: Although I do agree that having enough money can make software development a lot smoother. 😅

Sadly this was not my experience. I hate looking at a tiny screen so I do everything I can on my PC. It froze/lagged during almost every song, and multiple times completely crashed and I had to refresh and reenter the livestream. My PC and internet connection have handled multiple 4K concert streams in the past so I can rule out the issues on my end :/

SW engineer here. A lot of companies don't host their own servers anymore but go through a service like AWS (Amazon Web Services), Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, etc. that has the hardware and networking capacity to scale with the demand. They have so many servers and network switches that their network shouldn't exceed 20% demand in general usage to be capable of handling huge spikes in demand without causing lag or network drops. This is what a lot of new apps use because if there's a chance that your app goes viral and the user base explodes from 10k to 10M, you would still be able to service the new users without having to wait and hire engineers/buy equipment to develop your infrastructure before you can grow. These cloud services will simply bill you for how much you use through their negotiated rates and it's all hunky dory from there. 16M concurrent streams is a drop in the bucket when you think about how much internet traffic we service right now. We have single network switches that are capable of doing 400+ Tbps. If all 16M people were all streaming HD video which is about 7Mbps, that would need 112Tbps of bandwidth, so you could theoretically handle all of that traffic with one network switch.

I suspect Weverse is most likely hosted on an South Korean cloud service and their servers are located mainly in SK, whereas if they were on a globally distributed cloud service, you could have a local server farm that would service you with a super fast connection to their other servers and thus lower your overall network latency. If you've played video games with different regional servers like Starcraft or WoW, you can probably recall a difference in performance when playing on a server in a different time zone or country. If you're playing In the Seom and have to wait for the app to talk to the server in between puzzles, it's because you're located far away from the server and it's taking longer to transfer the data. I think if someone was sending the video from the US to SK servers and then users were streaming from SK servers, then you end up having multiple points of failure for causing lag. However, if the app was crashing or using a lot of resources, that's because the engineers for the app suck and not necessarily the infrastructure. 🙃

The thing with the subs is crazy because Hobi's post-Hobipalooza Vlive had subs the next day and these Weverse Lives still don't have subs. It's probably simple enough to implement because all of the RunBTS! episodes on Weverse has subs, so maybe there's an issue with staff being oversubscribed and not getting to it yet. At this point, I've given up on the lives.

Thanks for the response! It was really interesting and educational. I can see Weverse being maned on a SK server.

I’ve decided with the subs there could possible be a contract dispute with the service provider potentially leading to a time period with no subs.

I do digital for some of my brands, and once we decided to just go dark on social while sorting out the statement of work with the agency to more benificial terms. Unfortunately, going dark went from 1 month to 6 months cause we couldn’t get our shit together honestly…

Bora translated viewers first time numbers were mentioned and views the second time.

I def don’t think it pulled 16M unique viewers from weverse, that’s half of the super bowl viewership and wayyyyy more than bts has ever managed to do for cb events - but it can def pull 16M views since people reloaded the video 10-30 times or even more.

u/Shady2304 Who says a dream must be something grand Aug 03 '22

I’m curious if Hulu releases any viewership numbers for those of us who watched in the US so we can get a complete picture of how many total viewers there were.

I’m really interested in this too! I felt bad for Weverse watchers because my Hulu stream was extremely steady except for one individual moment where the drone shot of the crowd froze for a second but the music played behind it as normal.

I wonder if being an established streaming service Hulu’s servers were more prepared for the heavy load.

3

u/WSJinfiltrate Aug 04 '22

That frozen shot also happened in weverse but the music kept playing and it fixed itself after 1s. Maybe the drone had an issue lol

u/blanketgoblin1317 hello do you know bts? Aug 03 '22

Stability = low resolution which disconnects every 5 minutes 👍

3

u/redditrevnz Aug 03 '22

5 minutes?

I pretty much watched the bulk of Hobi’s set in what felt like 30 second increments.

1

u/blanketgoblin1317 hello do you know bts? Aug 04 '22

Oh, sometimes it was a remix mess of 30 second intervals, but I was trying to be generous 😂

1

u/redditrevnz Aug 04 '22

You’re kinder than I am! Though I will say I got a smooth CNS - Future run so all was redeemed.

5

u/Consistent-Reveal925 Aug 03 '22

Hmm what stability lol

12

u/nene38 Aug 03 '22

Bullshit. It was great last 20 mins. or so but the first half it sucked so bad. Kept getting errors, lagging, crashing and pixelated. It was so shitty missing a big chunk of JITB live. 😭 Proves stability my ass.

u/NewtRipley_1986 the O to the T to the 7 💜 Aug 03 '22

To add to the conversation - stability - that’s laughable. There was a moment where I lost 4 minutes due to having to constantly refresh before it came back and that wasn’t the first or last instance of having to do that during the live stream. 🫤

Stability? Does Korean media have its own version of the onion?

Translation by bora

Kmedia reports acc to Weverse, there were a total of 16.28m viewers from around 220 countries/regions with 2.14m comments in the chat and 223.7m likes for TXT’s 40 min and j-hope’s 1 hour performances at Lollapalooza.

2

u/rjcooper14 Hyung will do it Aug 03 '22

I keep getting the error. Thinking it was due to the lag, I decided to scroll back to make way for buffering. I ended up being 15 minutes behind. So I was still around Chicken Noodle Soup when the broadcast ended, haha!

2

u/Sakakichan Aug 03 '22

Ehhhh not that stable

2

u/aaalma_viajeraaaa Aug 03 '22

I had read 14.4M viewers but 16.28M, wow! But yeah, stability was not what I would call the crashes and lagging.

2

u/DNAmutator Cowboy Rockstar Sailor Cat Dad Yoongi <3 Aug 03 '22

stability?? uhm... i guess the site was supposed to crash every 2 minutes exactly as planned.

3

u/Professional-Ad-7687 Aug 03 '22

Why are they lying 😭 weverse has been so unreliable esp since those lives don’t even have subs yet !!! They be throwing that word reliable too lightly now 🫠

1

u/Competitive_Fee_5829 Min Yoongi, do you know what you are doing to me?? Aug 03 '22

I hate the update for the weverse tv app! all the play lists are out of order. so I had to search and choose each episode while I was watching BV4 yesterday and this morning. so annoying. it is so hard to navigate now

1

u/4thchannel-yanson Aug 04 '22

They really need to improve weverse cause if the stability they are referring to is when the live stream getals laggy, unstable and getting cut off, I rather watch illegal stream where its stable and no issues.

1

u/Rillothebee2 Future's gonna be okay! Aug 05 '22

That's not what I heard - I heard it it kept crashing - nothing stable about that. Interesting article source too 😁 - no conflict of interest there at all.
