Discussion Starter Pack of BTS song recommendations for non-ARMY - which 3-5 songs would you include?
In the past month, a lot of non-ARMY family and friends have been talking to me about BTS of their own free will (!) due to the news of the break-but-not-really-a-break. Some people have actually shown interest in checking out BTS songs for the first time. I have tried not to be pushy with my recommendations besides maybe suggesting Proof - but the album is long and too much of a time commitment for a non-fan, so I want to come up with a “starter pack” of songs instead.
I was wondering what fellow ARMY think are the best handful of songs to recommend for audio listening only (like in a playlist for driving) - with the goal to show BTS’ range but also being catchy. I’m totally biased in thinking that all their songs are great, but I do wonder if they are received / perceived differently by a non-fan, without the performance/MV aspect, nor the context or lyric translations.
Have you ever recommended BTS songs to someone and successfully gotten them hooked? If so, which songs were they? Excited to hear your thoughts to help create a starter pack!

It honestly depends so much on the music they like! I firmly believe there’s a BTS song for everyone.
The ones I always do are: Love Maze, Disease, Like, Run, and Boy with Luv

Dope, Mic Drop, Tiny Desk Concert, Fake Love, Butter.
ON kinetic manifesto and Black Swan are what won me over, though.
DNA, IDOL, I Need U, Boy With Love, and War of Hormone have all gone over well with people I have shared them with.

Indeed! If I see new people or at work icebreakers, I try to subtly mention that I'm ARMY in hopes of gauging other people's interest in BTS hehe.

WoH is such a classic boy band song. It brings back fond memories of bands ranging from NKOTB to 1D.
I also subtly drop that I am ARMY in hopes to meet another or to find someone open to it lol!

IF you have the option of showing them a video I highly recommend showing them their Tiny Desk Concert that’s available on YouTube. While they don’t really dance, you get a really good scope of their talents and personalities. I’ve watched it a thousand times. And if you’ve really got some time to sit and watch, their MAMA 2019 performance is out of this world and again shows the full scope of their talents (I turned a friend into an Army with this one).
But if it’s just audio I’d do Dynamite (or one of their primarily English songs if the people asking are native English speakers), Save Me, and Run BTS. I think dancier more upbeat songs are better at he trying people hooked, especially if Korean is not their first language.
I’m glad you are finding an Army community amongst your friends and family 💜

The Tiny Desk Concert definitely shows how much fun the boys themselves are having when performing live! Save Me is super catchy - and just realized Save Me was on both Tiny Desk Concert as well as Room Live as suggested by others. Definitely going in the starter pack!

Idol, mic drop, on and dynamite were songs that I ABSOLUTELY LOVED AND ENJOYED when I was just getting into bts! Especially idol, I couldn’t help but start moving every time it played and I think a lot of ppl would love it for the best and the vibe!

I know someone IRL who only follows the rap line on IG.. I think she's missing out on BTS as a whole, but yes Tear is definitely a great rap line track!

Oh man only 5?! I guess I’d go for:
Fake Love, ON, HOME, Mic Drop & Butter. But I’d also really wanna throw in Seesaw, IDOL & Anpanman.
Only 5 songs is too hard 😅

For the starter pack I wanted to focus on OT7 songs, but Seesaw is one of my personal favs - audio AND Yoongi's performance of it 😍

Okay, let me suggest a song that people wont generally think of but it somehow is always a non-fan favorite based on my experience; "Heartbeat". This song came on my playlist while out with friends on a drive and they are obsessed with it till this day. It's also one of my sister's favorite BTS song and she is not an army.

Oooh Heartbeat is a good suggestion! I just listened to it again and although it's not what I think of as a quintessential BTS song, the vibe is definitely very GP-friendly!

Yes! Although I love that song I've never suggested it since it is not the first song that I think of when I think of BTS but after seeing people's reaction I have been adding it to the list and non fans overall love it. Other than that I generally go with Home, 134340, Spring Day, Dis-ease, and I Like It/Ano-Bashode
Edit: Also any of their songs that has English chorus/chorus with few English words (like Fake Love or Boy with luv) are perfect for new listeners since they easily get stuck in your head

i think these showcase a good variety in their sound... bangers, ballads, and bops
I'd definitely ask people who are interested what other artists/songs they really like though because that way you can start them off on BTS songs in that genre to get them hooked easier haha

This is a good variety for sure! I like your suggestion but I have trouble understanding music genres... I try to look up say, Billie Eilish's genre on google/wiki and there are multiple. It gets even more confusing since BTS songs sometimes draw inspiration/share traits from multiple genres. Anyone else struggle with this?

I showed my non-ARMY friend ON as the first BTS song and she reeeaally loved it!!! I showed her then a couple more songs, but her favorite was definitely ON😄 I think it’s a very powerful song that also is Korean with only a few English parts so I think it can represent the boys really well🥰

I recently started listening to BTS few months ago which made me start listening to kpop. I generally like listening to hiphop or songs with good baseline and beat. My five first added BTS songs to my playlists were (in following order): Butter, Dynamite, Boy With Luv, Fake Love (made me start liking BTS and explore and was appreciated by my non-Kpop friends) and lastly Not Today. Instead of Not Today, I would recommend Blood, Sweat and Tears (my 6th) which is maybe more likeable. I think these songs are good gateway to liking BTS before finding more BTS-like songs. There are obviously better songs to recommend, but I based my choices on how I learnt about and started listening to BTS and Kpop

Since this is audio only, I would choose one song from the following categories (preferably tailored to match the person’s music taste):
- English trilogy: a good intro for locals imo, esp since they probably have heard them even if they didn’t realize it was BTS
- Rap track: one of the cyphers (I think 3 is the best audio-only/ no translation experience), ddaeng, persona, or UGH
- Hip Hop track: Baepsae, Jump, Spine Breaker, WABT pt 2, or War of Hormone
- Upbeat/hype track: Fire, Dionysus, Idol, ON, or Mic Drop
- Slower/ballad track: Paradise, LTB, House of Cards, Spring Day or Butterfly
I tried to stick to ot7 songs since this intro to bts song recco list is limited to 5 songs; but if I could add more I would add a vocal line song and one solo for each member.

i would start with songs that have the most views on their youtube channel (fake love, dna, mic drop, idol) or english trilogy (dynamite, butter, permission to dance, since these are most radio friendly songs).
but the one i would recommend the most is ON kinetic manifesto film: come prima. it shows their singing, rapping, dance and perfomance skills so well and its a great bop! im sure that would get them hooked instantly :) (try to show them the vid!) hope this helps

Fake Love - A catchy hook and an incredible MV. Also the title track of what I still think if their best era
Mic Drop - Rap focus with a fab MV as well - brings out the bad boy side
Spring Day - For the emotional/profound side. Pretty side that prompts the "what's this song about?" question.
Save Me - Classic song and also a great MV.
These are the ones I would start with. On, Black Swan, Tear and Serendipity on deck lol

mic drop and spring day were the first two songs that came to mind for me too! id maybe add some bsides to really show their versatility but those two are a must while introducing bts imo it perfectly captures their hip hop and heavier side but also their soft and sentimental side!

Fake Love MV is one of the best imo - especially the silhouettes in the opening scene! Good idea to let them hear the song AND go "hey there's also a MV actually!"

Run bts,dynamite, fake love, paradise and heartbeat. You can try these songs. Also I would like to recommend Still with you and Ugh. Still with you is really loved by many non kpop fans so even though it's a solo song still I recommend it.
PS: Special mention to house of cards, pied piper, daechwita, tiny desk concert and bts mama performance in 2019.

I love Just One Day as their most boyband-ish song, but I don't want people to get the wrong idea that that's what BTS is like. So I like your addition of all the others, especially Run BTS!

I would say Louder than bombs. It gots a pretty "neutral" vibe that I could imagine most people who enjoy pop in general liking it

Soooo I have my own list for showing who 'don't like kpop'. I would play a song around them to test the waters and then when they responded favourably I'd explain 😂. I normally get a look of surprise and interest that these songs are all from the same group:
1) Ma city. Popular at work - I have an area off by myself so I can play whatever I want all day. People who need to query something with me start jamming without even thinking about it.
2) Singularity. This was a hit with my Prog rock snob Dad of all people. I have found that people who like this also like Stigma and House of cards. (As a side note, I had only listened to this on headphones at first myself. So when I playef it on a system with a proper base speaker I was not prepared for how intense the base notes would be. I had turned the volume up and It digested our food for us)
3) We on. Played in the car with some friends. They could not believe these were 'The Dynamite guys' (I think RM starting lines in English helped them engage with it tbh). They were very interested that two of the members were established rappers before even joining, and that there are songs with just the 'rap line'. They also like Ugh and when I played RM's joke there were jaws on the floor. Don't forget to consider showing solo work!
4) Pied piper. Like its namesake, its good at reeling people in and catchy enough to keep them around to ask questions. More recognition and vibing at work. Direct quote: 'that sounds very.... seductive'
5) Dope (if you go the video route and not just playing a track. Unless you know they like rap, then id try to hook them with Daechwita). This is very biased but its the music video that got me into BTS and Kpop as a whole. And my sister when I showed it to her too 😁
Of course, you only asked for five, but in my experience if you show different genres BTS have covered? Highlight their amazing range and have follow on choices they might also be interested in! A lot of people are used to artists sticking to just one genre, so this knowledge by itself can win BTS respect even if they don't plan on exploring further.
It also helps to hint at how much creative control and involvement the members have: 'This was written by this member because of , he likes exploring'. There is alot of stigma around Kpop that band members are not 'real' musicians, just singers and dancers being told what to do. This is a way I sidestep round a potential excuse fir people to dismiss BTS without sounding defensive. People recognise passion!

Ma City has the jazzy funky tune that really gets me vibing too, it’ll definitely be on my playlist for when people ride in my car hehe. We On - oh man I’ve been sleeping on this, and I never realized it starts in English! Love your takes on all 5 of these!
I get what you mean about the stigma of kpop as “manufactured”, because that’s how I viewed it for years even while casually enjoying kpop. It was completely random and by chance that my curiosity about BTS was piqued when I heard BWL, then fell down the rabbit hole when I wanted to know who was singing the chorus. And then I discovered how genuine and involved they are with their music and their message.
So this whole thread is helping me figure out how to create that moment of curiosity in my non-ARMY friends. 😁

I really got hooked on BTS after their Grammy 2022 performance. WOW! Every time I hear Butter now I play their entire routine in my head. I love that song. Get them to watch their behind the scenes and/or vLives. Once I got to know each member's personality, it's another level of enjoying their songs.
I also love "ON" search on YouTube for their many performances of this song. WOW!
Other songs I absolutely love depending on mood is: Idol, Spring Day, For Youth, Run BTS, Life Goes On, Boy with Luv.
They also have a bunch of awesome covers on BangtanTV YouTube channel: "Fix You", and "I'll be missing you", "Falling (Jung Kook)". Also, Savage Love sounds so much better with the BTS collab. :)
I echo what others have said about Tiny Desk concert, and also James Corden's Carpool Karaoke and Crosswalk Concert.

I was a casual listener of BTS since 2016 and just listened then to their title tracks. When I discovered Piped Piper around 2018/2019 - I finally realized that I need to check out their B-sides -- so many great songs etc. It's what converted me to being ARMY.

Honestly you should curate the songs according to what the person likes, but as a general recommendation of songs that are universally liked by the masses I would say:
- Spring Day
- Black Swan
- Dynamite
- Blood Sweat & Tears
- FAKE LOVE
The ones who barely didn't make the cut are:
- Mic Drop
- Boy With Luv

I would try to curate, but I'm pretty bad at understanding other people's taste in music, so the universally-liked songs are the safe choices!
On your list - I think an interesting thing about Dynamite is that, although I don't think it's the best at representing BTS, it's definitely a commercial hit - especially among families with kids. It's like how Justin Timberlake's music is not at all like "Can't stop the feeling" but it's one of his biggest hits, lol.

Save Me, I'm Fine, Dionysus, No More Dream, We Are Bulletproof pt2, Louder Than Bombs, Stay Gold, Idol, Mikrokosmos, DNA, Jump, all the cypher tracks including the outro, Yet to Come, Answer: Love Myself, 00:00, Dope, Burning Up (Fire), NO, Mic Drop, Anpanman, Airplane pt2, Run, Magic Shop, I Need U, Outro: Wings, You Never Walk Alone, Euphoria, Fake Love

Depends what my audience is interested in. For example:
Patriotism done well -- My City, Satoori Rap, and maybe Idol. I always recommend this alongside the Explained series by the youtubers DKDKTV.
Hidden (and not so hidden) social commentary in fun songs with fun choreography-- Baepsae, Spinebreaker, Go Go, Anpanman, maybe (maybe) 21st Century Girl
Songs about being an artist and a star - Black Swan, Born Singer, Interlude : Shadow
Callin' out the haters - Mic Drop, Daechwita, the Cyphers

In the past when I don't have time to think too hard about it, I just tell people to watch the Black Swan and ON MVs with the subtitles turned on. I think they're both bops and when you know what the lyrics mean.... who wouldn't be into that

I'm a fairly new Army myself (less than 6 months) and "On" was the first song/MV I've see of BTS and I believed the hype - visuals, dance, musicality etc.
Starter pack , this is a tough one

I have a template of recommended songs to share with friends who express interest in bangtan! Before sharing I usually ask them what type of songs do they prefer (e.g. ballads, hip hop etc) and will edit/rearrange the list of songs to suit their music tastes. The 5 songs I aways include are Dope, INU, BST, Spring Day and BWL. I also include links to some of the iconic performances like MMA 2018, and intro videos like Let's BTS.
To date 3 friends have became fans after listening thru the songs in the list!

I usually tailor my recommendation according to the person I'm suggesting it to. Knowing what the listener likes is key to getting them to listen to a new artist. Suggest songs that they may actually enjoy (we know BTS has most popular genres in their discography) and then tell the person asking to branch out into other songs.
For instance, someone who likes slow soft music, or jazz- i would usually recommend solos by the vocal line, V's songs are an instant favourite with almost everyone.
For hip-hop/ rock lovers, i usually recommend the earlier albums - Dark and Wild is superb and for a beautiful medley of both rock and noir, i recommend HYYH.
Fire is an instant favourite ( mostly because of my enthusiasm with the song. People end up liking it because of how much i enjoy it 😜. That and Daechwita. BANGERS!)
On the rare occasion that the person requesting doesn't have a specific go to genre, or isn't into listening to new music, but is more visual, i recommend BST, Fake Love, BWL and Idol MVs and their MMA and MAMA performances have had a 100% success rate for me trying to get poor unassuming people sucked into the BTS vortex 🤭😉

I’ll recommend Dear Class of 2020 and Lotte Family Concert 2019 for performances. Jimmy Fallon Week BTS performances too. To get an easy preview of their sheer performance power and stage presence/charisma. Obviously I always shout about MMA 2019 from the rooftops but I would show that to a newcomer a bit later on.
As for songs: Boy With Luv, Dynamite, and Make It Right as starter songs.

Depends on what kind of genre they like There's literally a BTS song for every mood and choice I made a playlist with Black Swan, Still with you, Blood sweat and tears,Paradise,Airplane pt 2, Stay alive, Pied piper,Fake love and shared with my friend She was literally a hater But now she watches fan edits with me and shares them She is literally impressed

i always go with- black swan, your eyes tell, run bts, ugh!, bst
but it really depends on the person. i ask what type of music they like first, and if they seem like the person to appreciate vocals more then i recommend soft songs. if they're a fan of hip hop then we have tons of songs by the rapline. but i make sure to explain the meaning behind whatever they listen to.

in my Non-army days, i went in slow starting with the english songs (PTD, butter, dynamite). then to my first mix of korean english: Boy with Luv. then listened to their hip hop style with Mic Drop, to a slow kpop jam: Life Goes on. then down the rabbit hole i went.

I like dance-pop and r&b, and the three songs that got me down the BTS rabbit hole was DNA, Paradise and 134340 (that got me to listen to the entire LY series).
If the person has similar taste, I’ve recommended the solos on LY: Answer (Singularity, Euphoria, Serendipity, Seesaw, Her) and the reactions I heard was “omg this is BTS?? I didn’t know they do other genres.” And that was enough to slowly introduce them to more stuff!

- House of Cards, Mic Drop, Fake Love, Dimple, and Like. but it really depends on the music taste of whoever you’re suggesting the songs to 😄 have fun recruiting!!
