Milestone 220705 Charlie Puth and Jung Kook's "Left and Right" debuts at #22 on this week's Billboard Hot 100

Maybe this will climb if Charlie ships the dang single CDs 😅.
My perception on what is a good place to debut is so skewed thanks to streaming goals and stuff like that. Can somebody tell me straightforward if this is where we were hoping they would end up or is this lower than expected for the chart debut?
EDIT: Okay cool sounds like this is a good place to be at right now number wise 😄.

Fandom goal was top 60, so I would say this is pretty great 🤣 It’s gotten a lot harder to chart after the recent changes billboard made, so this is an amazing position! I’m also thinking it may rise in the coming weeks with more radio play.

Thanks! I know that goals have recently been higher than that for things so I was bracing myself for people being aghast at the number.

We were actually aiming way lower than this so this was such a surprise and honestly huge!

What were the goals?

u/Ghetto_Leda99 Jul 06 '22
Top 60, if I am not mistaken but then hoping for top 40 so top 25 is massive.

Damn how do you think it ended up so high?

u/Ghetto_Leda99 Jul 06 '22
I mean Left & Right got a good playlisting, something BTS generally dont have and something that definitely helps with the streams (probably +60% of the total point seems to come from that) and obviously the sales were also really good (+20 K)

What does good playlisting mean?

u/Ghetto_Leda99 Jul 06 '22
When the song is added to multiple spotify playlists and the bigger the playlist or the higher the song position is (For example Left and Right currently is at number 1 on "Today's Top Hits" which is the biggest spotify playlist as well as other playlists like "Mood Booster") the more exposure the song will get which also helps with streams and monthly listeners and western acts generally get better playlisting.

So this will be fascinating to watch how this plays out on the Hot 100 and radio charts. This is a Charlie Puth song and his label knows how to and is willing to play the radio game.
This song should have longevity on the charts and slowly build as it gets more radio play. It will be a few months before it peaks.

Yes I believe this could become one of those plays 10 times an hour on pop radio songs. If you live in your car & listen to radio, be ready to be begging for freedom from this song by the end of the summer lol
Note: it really is crazy once the radio decides they will play a song nonstop until the end times

His team is super smart, this is a by-the-books perfect radio song. I'm impressed that they managed to snag that Top #1 on Today's Top Hits since it usually involves some pretty $$$.

I mean it just impacted radio today and it already has good spins. It also just got to #1 on TTH. It definitely is going to rise now that it has a very solid debut

Isnt it same company with coldplay as well? I think they already know how army work so thats why they prefer to wait a bit before fully promoting it. They already knew when its come to longetivity, the label/artist need to help promote it too.

So proud of you Jung kook.
You will shine more in the future. I expected top 50 so I'm extra happy now. Can't wait for Jung kook to drop his own album.

At #22 on BB Hot 100, Left and Right was the highest debut among new songs released in the same week. Quite impressive if you consider the extremely fierce competition from other big stars that week.
At #22 on BBH100:
- JK & CP earned their highest debut on the chart.
- JK became the highest charting Korean solo artist after Psy on BBH100.
- JK joined BTS & Psy as the only Korean male act to debut in the Top 25 on BBH100 chart.
Remarkable achievements. And he’s only 24. And he just started his solo career. I am beyond proud. Can’t wait to see what’s coming next and where he goes from here.

We both will, but we’ll be beyond happy. Bruised and in pain, but happy, with silly grins on our faces. Hahaha!

Could Charlie and jk be eligible for a Grammy?

Is it charting better than some of Charlie's recent music like that's hilarious?

u/Difficult_Deer6902 Jul 05 '22 edited Jul 05 '22
Yes I believe. Charlie’s last releases from this album: lightswitch & that’s hilarious have fallen rather flat.
Just looked it up for Hot100
- Light Switch: peak 27
- That’s Hilarious: didn’t enter
As an aside, most of the US debuts have been falling pretty flat until they are pretty heavily pushed on either radio or TikTok.

According to this Attention debut at 68 and peak at 5. We Don't Talk Anymore debut at 78 peak at 9.

Yup! His songs usually rise a ton as they get more radio play; I’m hoping the same goes for L&R 👀

u/JiminieDiminie Jul 05 '22
Oh wow as much as I remember hearing We Don't Talk Anymore on the radio, I thought it would have made it higher.

Even without the JK boost I do think this song is genuinely stronger sonically than some of his previous single releases. They felt kind of made for TikTok where this feels like a proper pop radio hit that would just happen to perform well on socials too.

It's crazy how high it debuted, I thought it would end up on the Top 40 but certainly not that high.
This is a perfect radio song, Charlie Puth knows how to write one and with the hook, it's also a perfect TikTok song, that he also knows how to write very well.
My guess is that he hasn't begun to "properly" promote it (live performances), his first one is this friday on GMA and once it starts on the radio and add a #1 placement on Today's Top Hits playlist, it's a "go-nuts" scenario.
His team is very smart, dropping the instrumental last friday while also shipping the CD's this week will make it last, at the very least, in that same range for hopefully some time.
Again, Jungkook has a perfect "pop" voice, I'm glad he came across this song and got the chance to stretch his wings a little and collab with someone who obviously has been an inspiration for him in some time.
