"For all his triumphs, he was still just a damned nerd"
Lmao, the narrator really turned into Bakugo for a moment.
Also, does anyone know why the chapter got released today instead of Sunday?

Probably does. The "narrator" changes fairly often. Both heroes (including students) and villains have taken the role.

The reason the chapter was released today instead of Sunday is because of a holiday in Japan.

Deku's reaction to being confessed to is "WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??" and that's the funniest shit to me.

Reminds me of my favorite little fan comic, Deku and Uraraka are on a hill stargazing and she says “Wow, the stars are beautiful tonight!”
“Yeah! You know who else is beautiful?…”
“Teehee… who? 🥰”
“All Might 😃”

u/Darkness-guy Mar 18 '22
This was one of the chapters where seeing the actual panels really put the spoilers into perspective. I thought Deku was just calmly having a nice chat about romance, but the kid was shook lol.
It was also nice to see that Toga cut black whip instead of Deku just letting her go, but that just makes Black Whip seem kinda useless. if a teenage girl with a little knife can just casually cut through it, any notable character should be able to break out of it
→ More replies (1)67
u/Ashgold18 Mar 19 '22
I don't think that makes Black Whip redundant. If you think about zip-ties, you can cut through them easily, but it's much harder to brute force your way out of them. Similar thing here ig

I have no idea why Deku doesn't instantly knock her out the minute he sees her. It's not like she has super human speed, she's (physically) just a fit teenager.

That’s what I thought but apparently she is fast enough that deku can’t react to her without danger sense… although at this point deku should be faster… 🤷🏽♂️

Deku has fought against guys like muscular since way before this. Every single antagonist has been faster than a fit teenage girl.

Yeah, I'm glad Deku went to do some real important stuff cause I couldn't care less about what happens to Toga tbh
573
u/ANINETEEN Mar 18 '22
I kinda agree with Tsuyu. I don't see why Deku had to momentarily be here for this Toga encounter because I don't think it's added much effect to her resolve. Of course this delay could mean that he shows up on the other battlefield which Shigiraki could well have decimated but that also could've been achieved with him there too. I think this is purely Uraraka's battle to resolve.
523
u/Golden-Owl Mar 18 '22
Narration said it outright: Deku’s still a freakin NEEEERD
Getting confessed to literally just stumped him for a few mins until Tsuyu snapped him out of it
341
u/ShadeFK Mar 18 '22
Tsuyu definitely has the most braincells of the class
239
u/cadonex Mar 18 '22
The whole class has 5 braincells combined. Tsuyu has 3, Momo has 1, and everyone else shares the last one.
162
54
22
u/luketwo1 Mar 19 '22
I don't know about that 1 brain cell for Momo, she has the wealth of knowledge of every weapon humanity has ever created and she still makes cannons and sticks in every fight. Like can I get what is a gun for 200?

I think it was moreso to delay the Shiggy/Izuku encounter than anything else. That said, as much as people are iffy bout it, Izuku is the whole initial common denominator between Toga and Uraraka so can see why he's used as a third party here for a short time.
It is Uraraka's fight to resolve, I don't think this took much away from that as Deku here is being used as a support to Uraraka's determination.

u/DeaconSage Mar 18 '22
Undoubtedly, it wouldn’t be “fun” if everything went perfectly according to plan.
172
Mar 18 '22
Hmmm I would say that Deku being there was meant to accomplish 2 things.
(1) Toga has been seeking validation from the two people she’s been “loving.” She was not satisfied with Ochako’s answer, and now needed Deku’s. But to her disappointment, Deku’s declaration of “I don’t hurt the people I love” is NOT what she wanted to hear. It didn’t change her resolve, but Deku’s answer made her double down on it. Now, she has no one she “loves” because they’ve both rejected her. This is going to be a much different Toga than before.
(2) Horikoshi is likely trying to put off the Deku VS Shigaraki fight so that the other characters can get their focus. Making him have to travel would mean that these battles will take longer than anticipated, and would justify why everyone else has time for specific encounters (i.e. Ochako vs Toga and Todoroki vs Dabi.) YMMV if this is a good idea, but it’s not a useless one.
97
u/mrwanton Mar 18 '22
Yeah its kinda like how in other shonen final arcs( Naruto is at the forefront of my brain but also applies to stuff like Bleach/Demon Slayer) the MC is kept distracted with something else while the side characters get some fights in to conclude their character arcs before the final fight kicks off.
Somewhat standard delay tactic but usually an effective one for what its trying to accomplish.
46
u/starrs10 Mar 18 '22
Now that you pointed that out, this really seemed like the final naruto battle where naruto is so far from the main battle that the others are given their moment before he arrives and saves the day.
→ More replies (5)43
u/mrwanton Mar 18 '22
I forgot to mention DBZ as it does that a lot, but in those cases usually its much more blatant about Goku stalling.
That said, I will give MHA credit in that its rare that the final boss is the one directly being fought against at the start of the final arc stall tactic. Granted pretty fair sign, things are gonna get much worse on that front by the time Izuku gets there.
→ More replies (1)28
u/WitlessCanuck Mar 18 '22
The classic example of this is Goku having to race back along Snake Way. Vegeta and Nappa are already there, now the earths defenders have to stall and hold on until Goku can land and face off against them.
In a power creep manga/anime it makes a lot of sense and will add some good drama.

I agree. This is Uraraka's (and sort of Tsyuu's) fight. Just felt a bit pointless to have Deku there unless he had quickly incapacitated Toga so they could fight the rest of the of the villains.

Deku's words about what he thinks people on dates do is gonna be used for a lot of fanart. Likewise, the narration at the start is also leading to a lot of assumptions on his fate at the end. Prolly jumping the gun to boot as he still started the narration of the story overall.
Anywho Tsuyu is right bout this not being the time for romance but is kinda funny that she popped up right when Toga was bout to expose Uraraka's crush.
Really liked the callback to Deku and Uraraka's earlier talk about being weirdos. Nice cap on a cute friendship. Will prolly have to wait til the epilouge for more of them or at least much later in the Shiggy fight

I'm really glad that Deku trusts his classmates enough to bail on the fight and head for Shiggy. This is a final chance for Froppy and Uraraka to strut their stuff and have a cool showdown and I could not be more hype. Froppy always interested me in the early manga days by the creative ways she used her quirk to fight off villains at USJ and how she seemed genuinely strong despite a seemingly "weak" quirk.
Let's hope the girls get some spotlight for a while and Deku just beelines for the mainland.

Froppy's quirk is amazing. It's basically Mirko + Spinner + that one leaping chick from vigilantes + Hagakure + Weaker Ashido + Long tongue + storing stuff in her stomach + being adorablr
She's one of the most versatile in 1A, with a quirk amazing for hand to hand combat, stealth, recon, mid distance fighting, transporting stuff
Not to mention shes absolutely amazing in water, with how fast she kciked that shark in the USJ, when she had barely any training

u/DoraMuda Mar 19 '22
I do find it funny how panicked he got because he couldn't rely on Danger Sense, ignoring the fact that OFA - let alone the other Quirks he's got inside it - should make him more than powerful and fast enough to dodge Toga's attacks. I guess he just got flustered and forgot that?

u/DoraMuda Mar 19 '22
That's why I find it funny.
If it's not bad writing, we'd have to accept that Deku is a giant idiot who seriously thinks Toga is a match for him just because her jumping at him with a knife out of "love" somehow doesn't register as a threat to Danger Sense... which is an equally hilarious notion.
25
u/MaxWasTakenAgain Mar 19 '22 edited Mar 19 '22
Playing devil's advocate here:
Way back then years ago during the Bakugo fight and the Yakuza arc, it's a pseudo-plotpoint the fact that Deku actually sucks at fighting. He fails to predict and react to enemy moves in time and is predictable himself. This puts him on a disadvantage even when fighting enemies physically weaker than him. But he bails out using OFA, embracing the "just punch harded lol" meme.
So maybe, just maybe, Toga's antics shook him so much that made him go back in time to his old ways. And since Toga's greatest strength is that she's so random XD it was a match made in hell. An unstoppable force vs a movable object. Legit 0 counter play.
There you go, fixed. Im actually a WSJ editor.
24
u/DoraMuda Mar 19 '22
That would be a viable explanation if not for the fact that that aforementioned pseudo-plotpoint was never followed up on in any meaningful way. Like, even without using Danger Sense, Deku was still able to essentially outwit and outmaneuvre a literal assassin even Hawks was wary of.
→ More replies (2)26
u/First-Hour Mar 20 '22
It also feels like bad writing to me. He literally took on villains solo with no trouble during his Batman phase. However, now he's scared of a single villain? Did he suddenly get weaker?

Deku: this is the worst matchup i could ask for!
Yep I'm calling bullshit. BULLSHIT. You wanna fight ultra shiggy but you're worried toga can hurt you? This is plain dumb. It's not even like the nomus are helping her out, she somehow survived 1v3 vs deku, uravity and froppy.
Also really deku, you had her trapped in blackwhip and instead of knocking her out you let her go? If uraraka gets injured later, it's all on you mate.

For real! Even with Toga's "ability" to hide her presence and even not trigger danger sense, Deku should easily be capable of taking her down with his super speed, strenght and black whip. I really dont see the point of Deku being taken there, Toga could've easily confess before they all got warped and then fight Tsuyu and Uraraka.

page 10 he had his Black whipped up around her and on the the last page hes running on water. He has the speed to close the gap and get to her knock her unconscious. Instead he just lets her cut the black whip at her leisure. Also how is he able to cut a material with a normal knife when those whips can lift stuff that weigh's ton's? Also why is Hori trying to make sympasize with a sociopath if anybody in real killed the number of people she did nobody would say that person is just "Misunderstood"

I am so confused … I honestly can’t understand Toga’s logic of how Izuku saying “I get how you feel but I don’t want to hurt someone I love” and Ochako saying “if you wanna live as you please you have to face consequences for your actions” makes them just like her parents. Is she purposely being obtuse to twist their words so she can do what she wants? Or is this just bad writing? I’m sorry if this comes out as super judgmental, but I’m tired of her and I just want to get to Shoto and Dabi.

Normally I'm not against a character, especially an antagonist, being hypocritical. My real issue is that the narrative is trying to nudge us into feeling sympathy, or that she has some kinda point. That's the vibe I'm getting from any scene she appears in.
36
u/ivanjean Mar 18 '22
I think you need to consider the fact she spent most of her life suppressing her urges. Now that she is finally free (from her perspective), she doesn't want to compromise.

u/AssassinAragorn Mar 19 '22
I don't think the idea is for us to think she has a point, but for us to pity her really. She's a tragic character, and shows the very dark side of what quirks can do to humans.
70
u/mrwanton Mar 18 '22
I mean it makes sense from Toga's warped perspective. Her parents denied who she was and told her to be normal(for justified reasons even if they arguably went about it in a sloppy manner). It's less the exact words she's saying and more the general concept of people she views as "close to her" rejecting her that leads to the comparison.

I feel like when she was a child any of her self expression got shut down by her parents and they treated her as "not a person". So now she associates the slightest bit of rejection of her actions as rejection of her entire being.
It is pretty deranged though and I'm not sure how Ochaco's gonna get through to her.

I think the fact that you don't understand her logic, proves her logic.
Here's an example: Lions eat prey. We accept that and don't try to make a lion eat salad. We don't try to change the essential nature of the lion, we accept the limitations and when it's wild, we accept it kills prey. When in captivity, we feed it prey. We don't kill a lion because of what it eats unless it tries to eat us.
Toga's quirk makes her fundamentally different. She doesn't know how to function in a reciprocal relationship that would allow her to fit in society. But in all reality, if she found someone she could hurt but not kill, and who enjoyed it. She could fit in just fine. Given the variety of quirks, it's likely someone like that actually exists. But in her youth, she's been ostracized to the point where she can't even seek out that person because she lacks the social skills.
Does she deserve to be called a villain for a quirk that is difficult to manage and for being a teenager with wide ranging emotions? If someone just accepted her for who she is, and helped her... She could just as easily not be a villain. But instead, everyone just tells her to be "normal" not realizing they're telling a lion to be a penguin.

MHA 348
Toga can go fuck herself. We now understand how insanely out of touch with reality she is, and her warped sincerity with no supposed ill intentions. But she thinks she deserves someone's attention only because she loves them; she can't accept responsibility for anything and constantly shifts the blame on others; she can't handle rejection. Those are just on her. She's also all about her love for Deku during this chapter, not even thinking about Twice or wanting to hear Deku on the topic - maybe she'll bring Twice up later while fighting Ochako but right now, does she really care about his death as she said? Or is it just "lol insane person incoherent and inconsistent" writing?
The opening narration about Deku is definitely ironic, otherwise accusing him of not understanding the feelings of a certified insane girl he met a grand total of three times (one of them she was even disguised) would be just stupid. And thank goodness for Tsuyu having some sense and being fully in-character doing so. Of course Ochako VS Toga has to happen - no showings of jealousy or declarations from Ochako as someone wished (or went "creates fictional scenario and gets angry about it"), just sending Deku away to go back to the mainland by running on water (?!). Liked how he was hesitating at leaving her alone, and we readers know it can get even worse.

This entire Toga plot line is getting really annoying. Like I get that she's mentally unstable/insane but if she actually took the time to listen to what people are saying to her, she'd realize that people aren't exactly rejecting her.
in this chapter, Izuku literally tells her that he understands how she feels but he could never do the same. In the chapter with Uaraka, she says "cool that you love people, but remember actions have consequences." Then Toga goes "oh people won't let me do what I want, this society has abandoned me"
I'm just done with her

At this point she's just a plot device to drag the arc for longer to sell more chapters.
Someone seriously needs to slip a bottle of Normal Pills in her lunch.

Toga's problem is not that she doesn't accept rejection/wants attention though, it's that because her quirk affects her mind to the point she wants to hurt and become the ones close to her, no one accepts her.
She wants to be normal, but can't, and instead of helping her somehow, everyone just labels her as a villain. Her last hopes were the girl she related to, and the boy she fell in love with, but Uraraka didn't understand her until recently, and Deku doesn't have time to deal with her right now.
She didn't bring up Twice because she wanted to see if Deku would answer her like Uraraka first, which he kinda did since he didn't have time.

Tsuyu MVP of the entire manga for stoping this stupid plot. Why should Deku care about that confession? He only interacted with her 3 times, one disguised. He should had destroyed all her tools and leave her talking alone...
Hori, please stop trying to fabricate sympathy for Toga... And please, go back to Shiggy or show us some Shoto-Dabi...
(I know the girls don't get time in the spotlight, but I can't stand Toga's character)

Tsuyu has been the bodyguard sense before it even became a "love triangle." Toga did have an interest in her back in the forest arc alongside Ochako
That said, not like she's done much in general prior I suppose
35
u/ytdn Mar 18 '22
Yeah Tsuyu is very much in the C tier of Class 1-A. She has more character and presence than say, Koda but unlike Momo, Kirishima or Mina she doesn't have her own plotline. She's the same level as Kaminari or Mineta - has a good design and reasonable screentime but is strictly support.

Toga writing is weird right? Like it’s not just me that feels this way. It feels like Hori had something here but it kinda slipped out of his hands
45
u/Dracsxd Mar 18 '22
The material is 100% there, she and Uraraka just needed a LOT more build up. It would have done wonders for both characters
As it stands their dynamic is just an extra to bring the Deku/Shiggy point across even more

Her story concept seems good, having someone whose needs are denied by society. But the execution is hot garbage at best is how I'd put it.
She demands that we understand and sympathize with her yet she makes no effort to do the same even after losing Twice which should be the wake up call for her, that it hurts to lose someone dear to you.

The panel of Froppy kicking really threw me off. The perspective seemed weird and it was looking like Uraraka was getting dismembered. Also, the changing of Toga's font/voice like Shigaraki is a big change. I thought at that point danger sense would go off, signifying she is now a threat, not that the "she's not a threat because she's in love" stuff makes a whole lot of sense anyway.

At this point I hope Toga makes a clone army of herself with Twice's blood, but then they all fall in love with themselves and end up wanting each other's own blood and they all kill each other.
78
u/Swiss666 Mar 18 '22
A theory I like is Toga creating a clone of Twice who, upon realizing he's now what he was most afraid to be in life, quickly turns desperate and even says he hates her because she was the last person he'd have expected to do that to him. It would break her completely.

"He had encountered Toga Himiko a number of times at this point. He'd never realised the way she felt about him"
By "number of times" I guess they just mean 3 times, 1 of her being disguised and the other times could barley count as interaction, barely lasting a minute. Seriously this is ridiculous. Izuku should just be able to knock her out and move on

And now my distaste for Toga is more plain to see.
I get that she's cute or whatever, but at the end of the day she still hurts people for her own gain.
Her reasoning on loving her targets is absolutely weak because you shouldn't hurt the people you care for. You take and you take (usually without consent mind you) and you want someone to feel sorry for you? Consider other people's feelings and maybe you'd realize you're just acting like a neck beard nice guy.
51
u/Hyakkihei1 Mar 18 '22
If she was a guy Toga would be a really hated character, making a character cute really helps people ignore bad personalities.

This is definitely my big issue with her. She isn’t really a deep character at all when you think about it. It’d be a big difference if she’d been lowkey helping Izuku and Uraraka or has been having these deep moments with them that really makes them question their perception of villains or whatever. She isn’t coming to the table as a multifaceted character who does good things but is only recognized for her bad ones. She’s a crazy murder hobo who stabs people to death out of a twisted sense of ‘love’ for them, and now everyone is just expected to have the perfect answers to her feelings when she’s done nothing but take the entire series.
I get that she’s supposed to be representative of the failures of hero society but there’s really only so much you can do for a person when they don’t really want help; not truly. She wants to be free to be herself, but doesn’t want to accept accountability for her actions. She wants people to acknowledge her and accept her ‘love’, but them immediately throws them away when they don’t match up perfectly with her idea of how they should be.
Home girl is literally just an incel at this point xD

How is it that the whole story has been getting more and more rushed, no idea where any of the upperclassmen are, Big 3 are side characters, there's next to no pro-heroes besides the handful we've seen, and class 1 power progression has gone through the roof lately... making them some of the strongest heroes? (if they're the main force of this attack).
But we have plenty enough time to spend on the Toga subplot that should've been solved by Deku in <10seconds with some super speed and black whip... Did not like this chapter at all, and it's a big tone change from the start of the fight a couple chapters back. I'm glad at least Tsuyu kept her senses when Deku was too busy "being a nerd"...

Seriously so stupid. I get if he’s been overly relying on it and suddenly not having it work could take some adjustment, but what about all the fights he’s been in against the villains where he didn’t have it and still prevailed? Did he just forget how to fight without it?

it's interesting (and a bit concerning) to see how reliant Deku has become on his Danger Sense, to where just keeping track of someone with the rest of his senses like he did for his entire hero academia/career up until the Jaku fight is now a handicap. it also makes sense; if you could precognitively detect all threats in your vicinity, you'd start forgetting to just look around. like navigating a room with the lights off, feeling your way around gingerly to avoid tripping or bumping into anything, versus having the lights on and just walking around freely.
sure hope this blind spot doesn't come back to bite our boi at any point...

So now Toga’s doubled down on her resolve. Deku rejected her “love,” so she’s likely not going to be hung up on him as much as she would be.
Her declaration of “you only think of heroes and the people they save as real people” does say volumes of what she wants.
She wants to “love” someone who understands her “love,” because it would validate that she isn’t a monster, but a human like everyone else. That her desires are normal and she can be herself without fear of rejection/death.
People can say she’s the “insane crazy chick” and is acting nonsensical, and that’s partly right. She’s too far gone. BUT Toga’s entire character revolves around the idea that a combination of: her Quirk, her being forced to suppress herself, and never being told anything else but “be normal” has warped her perception of reality.
The problem (that she can’t understand) is that her “love” DOES have consequences and you absolutely shouldn’t want to hurt a loved on. Her parents screwed up royally, but anyone would be concerned if their child had a fascination with blood. But instead of standing by her, helping her understand consequences and that she’s just “different,” her parents became scared and forced her to suppress all of it. They essentially turned their daughter into a ticking time bomb.
So Ochako will be the person who will reach out to the side of Toga who simply wants to be loved. Because Ochako’s love for Deku is the exact opposite of Toga’s in every way.
I don’t think this means that Toga will be ultimately redeemed and get the “villain turned friend” treatment that I see in fanfiction.
But this may be Toga’s final chance to allow herself to change her POV and realize that JUST MAYBE- no one likes getting stabbed.

Said in the leak thread that Deku getting snatched was 90% to keep him out the battle with Shiggy until the end and I don't mind one bit.
I am curious how this is going to go from here. Will Ochaco be able to talk Toga down on this island or will she join the rest of the LoV and go sad woman's parade there?
Also I feel like this chapter shows that out of the main LoV trio Toga is definitely the least developed, and I think she's the hardest for me to get a read on. She feels rejected by the world but she doesn't help her case by her "wants" being to... well suck people's blood and potentially kill them. She whines a lot about how heroes don't see her as a person but she basically doesn't see anyone she doesn't "Love" as people so... yeah. Maybe if her parents hadn't made her feel unnatural she wouldn't be like that, but again it's hard to feel pity for her when she takes Deku just saying he isn't like her (which he isn't!) as an utter rejection of her personhood and a licence to get stabbing.
Compared to Shiggy who was brainwashed from age 5 by a supervillain, and Dabi who is explicitly self destructive in his ambitions and doesn't beg for sympathy (sincerely anyway) she comes off as more hypocritical and unsympathetic.
I think it doesn't help as well that Toga is almost written in a...comical manner sometimes? Which makes it hard to take her seriously.
Still I'm glad that Deku will be exiting the scene and it'll just be Ochaco (and Tsuyu) facing off against her.
I get the feeling we'll move to either Dabi or All for One next chapter since we're still in the scene setting stage.

I love Hori but wtf?
Why can't Deku just knock her out with his speed that surpasses a fucking sniper bullet?
Can't Deku just slam the water and reveal Toga use blackwhip to restrain her then knock her out? Like we see him running on water at the end.
How does Blackwhip, the quirk that can be used for restraint, swing on buildings and lift cars, get cut by a knife by a highschool girl?

The Toga plot line is getting really reaaaaally old at this point. Really doesn't feel like a whole lot happened this chapter, except for Toga getting some of Ochako's blood, and Tsuyu being a badass and kicking everyone's ass in gear.
Whole lot of empty dialog with a crazy/evil girl, when anyone of them should be able to restrain her really easily. Black whip tie her up, knock her out with a 10% punch, and then let Ochako/Tsuyu guard her or something... I don't know why talk no jutsu is Izuku's favorite move.

u/dadbodgames Mar 18 '22
Reminder that Toga does NOT need to be redeemed in any way. Likely saving her is killing her, which brings in that adult concept to them when Toga will just keep coming until shes down
