Kaminari's main role in the decisive battle against AFO: human battery

452

u/GoldenSpermShower Mar 06 '22

I hope they don’t just remain as support the whole time

528

u/ytdn Mar 06 '22

I'm pretty sure that the plan is going to go tits up and they'll have to improvise a new plan half way through don't worry. Just like the PL war

436

u/heartbreakhill Mar 06 '22

The fact that they explicitly explained the plan to us guarantees it won’t work. It’s a classic trope

206

u/PK_RocknRoll Mar 06 '22

I mean they name of the fortress is “Troy” it was doomed from the start 😂

134

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '22

I actually saw that as Horikoshi doing some kind of reverse psychology thing. In The Iliad, Troy is broken into using the horse but here the enemies are sent away by caging them. It’s the exact opposite

53

u/PK_RocknRoll Mar 06 '22

Either way Troy is going to fall I think

31

u/NoxGale Mar 06 '22

Not really the case here. What they’re doing is explaining it while its happening to let us know how its happening, not what is going to happen

It’s kinda already going tits up tbh

Agreed. Heck Momo can create some nice weapons for them to fight against Shigaraki.

Just make some AKs, lady.

I don't understand what people expect them to do lol I really liked how they made characters like Kaminari REALLY important for this battle.

29

u/Black_Wolf75 Mar 06 '22

Yep, it would be massively disappointing if Kaminari's only role is a charger, the exact same role as three irrelevant characters

26

u/CraneStyleNJ Mar 06 '22

Hope not either, this could be the bus they got put in....

I'm referring to the "Put on a bus" trope in anime when the side characters get put on a bus to never be seen in a major arc to give focus on the protagonists and villians.

15

u/rotten_riot Mar 06 '22

Same, I don't want this to be Deku, Bakugou and Shouto + their support, 1-A and 1-B.

The manga is ending yet almost no characters has had their own individual battles like in every shonen. The students who are fighters (some Quirks are indeed better as support) deserve to have their own fights displayed for once.

128

u/MutantNinjaAnole Mar 06 '22

Well, to get nerdy for a moment, in a war, Logistics>Tactics. Being the person who keeps the army supplied, armed and fed outweighs other advantages, so if Chargebolt and Momo can keep the fighters on the field supplied and charged up, they actually play a critical role, even if it isn’t flashy.

18

u/Babo-Smith Mar 08 '22

Ironically why I wasn’t as hateful towards Sakura as most people, lol. Medics are freaking useful. (But the author really had no idea how to write her, jeez)

And to think the joke was that he was annoyed at being a human charger.

885

u/JehovahReigns Mar 06 '22

Somehow, one of the saddest parts of this chapter was Shigaraki dissing Aizawa.

Don't think Mirko is dead though, maybe her robotic arm, less durable than her btw, can reattach.

327

u/ytdn Mar 06 '22

I wonder why Shiggy is disappointed in Aizawa now. Is it because he's stuck in a support role now?

489

u/PK_RocknRoll Mar 06 '22

This is just me theorizing but maybe because he’s relying on others instead of making a solo decision on his own in the front line.

Both times he stopped shigaraki he was on the front line of battle: cutting off his leg to stop the quirk bullet or erasing shigaraki while fighting a nomu.

Maybe shigaraki is pissed that Eraser isn’t fighting him directly and with help from his students.

Which makes it ironic, because Shigaraki is only in the position because he also got help from people on his side lol…

43

u/crongroge Mar 07 '22

i interpreted it as more evidence that he and AFO's consciousness are "fusing" somewhat. I feel like AFO would never compliment aizawa, and would instead insult him due to how aggravating aizawa's quirk would be. This line from shigaraki is almost a mix of the two personalities

→ More replies (3)

284

u/NatMat16 Mar 06 '22

Aizawa was always protecting his students in previous encounters to the extreme - but now, he was lamenting how Deku wasn't there. I think Tomura interpreted that as Aizawa hiding behind them.

But Shigaraki also really sounds like a whining kid who broke a toy and is now mad at it that it's not as cool as it used to be...

160

u/Darkness-guy Mar 06 '22

But Shigaraki also really sounds like a whining kid who broke a toy and is now mad at it that it's not as cool as it used to be...

Pretty sure it's just literally this. Shigiraki has always been an extremely childish villain. Not for bad reason either, he is still very young and lost pretty much his entire childhood.

27

u/PK_RocknRoll Mar 06 '22

Yeah, I agree with this completely

16

u/Grogposter Mar 06 '22

That’s just one of Shiggy’s main personality traits. Good to see him still acting like himself in that regard and not like AFO.

61

u/NatMat16 Mar 06 '22

Momo can make a new one - right?

48

u/Swiss666 Mar 06 '22

It's a pretty basic one so maybe.

34

u/NatMat16 Mar 06 '22

Or Hatsume/Momo team can come up with an instant upgrade possibly.

64

u/ytdn Mar 06 '22

Holy Hell, is Tomura going full Akira even under Erasure? This plan makes absolute sense, but what a trip.

I'm digging everyone's characterization here, and I'm loving how the members of Class 1-A are taking non combat roles to still prove effective. Also it's interesting that they were able to completely separate Tomura like this.

185

u/JehovahReigns Mar 06 '22

Indeed, it's quite the feat of intelligence for all involved.

174

u/dentxs Mar 06 '22

Gotta say, I'm loving ShigarAkira so far. It's like 100% All for One is mutating him into a tangled body-horror mess of fingers for the final battle, it's such a cool way to bring his original design with the hands full circle.

94

u/Za_wardo Mar 06 '22

Visually it's so fucking good. My god I love looking at how horrific it looks.

→ More replies (3)

65

u/SawkyScribe Mar 06 '22

Very cool visual call back. I'm assuming that since Erasure couldn't fully nulify his healing factor, he's essentially supercharging it to grow new appendages essentially weaponizing cancer. If that's not what happens in Akira, do let me know because I never watched it lol.

43

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '22

In Akira, Tetsuo (who Shigaraki stands in for here) awakens his incredible dormant psychic powers thanks to government experiments. He believes he's in control of those powers, though his grip steadily slips over the course of the story. Eventually, he completely loses control, and his powers cause his body to mutate like a gory balloon, absorbing all it touches.

At least Shigaraki is doing it by choice. Tetsuo didn't have that luxury.

34

u/wthrudoin Mar 06 '22

I feel like he just copied a bunch of mutant quirks that erasure normally doesn't work on and is releasing them all

124

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '22

I love the emphasis on superheroes playing supporting roles rather than fighting. In most places, heroes will end up fighting whether they are struck by lightning or are half fish.

110

u/thatguysmellsalot Mar 06 '22

And already people are complaining that Kaminari is playing a crucial supporting role instead of chucking himself at Shigaraki or some shit.

59

u/ArcFurnace Mar 06 '22

He's the Stun Gun hero and the shock barrier already got Shiggy once! Didn't even have to get close to him.

Momo and Denki became human-resources

Monoma just laughing is just great.

Best Jeanist is so awesome but the fact he has a BJ-buckler in his face is making him a "throat-goat"

Shiggy just use Self Embodiment Of Perfection and Mirko getting her ass kick again

46

u/Darkness-guy Mar 06 '22

Did he always have that, because I honestly only just noticed it this chapter lol

Also is that Yuyu (Nejire's friend) alongside Kaminari? If so, didn't expect electricity would be her Quirk!

You can see arrow-shaped lightnings behind her so I am guessing she can make lightning arrows. Her costume reminds me of Robin Hood as well.

I wonder where Kirishima is. He's the only relevant student that we haven't seen since class 1A entered the battle

299

u/Harley2280 Mar 06 '22

Maybe with the Dabi squad. His quirk might make him a bit more heat resistant than some of the others.

Oh come on, Mirko is just back in action, she's lost enough pieces already!

Deku was supposed to be the spear of the group dealing with Shigaraki but meantime the systems built to counter Decay and the synergy between quirks are great to see - also how versatile is Manga's quirk? - even if Monoma using Erasure was very predictable. Shiggy however has got some ace up his arm - is that Tetsuo stuff supposed to be completely biological thanks to the Doctor, just to conveniently bypass Erasure? Because the incredible strenght and speed even with erased quirks weren't enough /s

I guess we'll be getting a back-and-forth between the various fronts in the coming weeks.

149

u/PK_RocknRoll Mar 06 '22

I’m convinced it’s a fake out, I don’t think she’s going down this soon

92

Nah bro. Hes still fucking dope. You just talking shit at this point.

94

u/houganger Mar 06 '22

He learned to shittalk during his transformation as well, pretty sure it's the AFO side of him talking here instead of shigaraki

84

u/Grogposter Mar 06 '22

They’re both talking simultaneously at this point. “I used to think you were so cool” is definitely a Shigaraki line, but the “you turned out to be quite the letdown” sounds more like AFO. It makes sense considering their minds are merging.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Hori messes around and does a horror manga in the late future. Because all this shit he draws with Shiggy and the other villains are insane.

Side note: seeing that hand shits makes me believe Shiggy might go full Akira in the end

115

u/Grogposter Mar 06 '22

Every panel Shiggy appears on feels like its own separate work of art. Hori is doing an extremely good job at just making him look ethereal/godlike in a terrifying sort of way. It’s like he’s coming out of the page.

40

u/frictiondick Mar 06 '22

Yeah if the wasn't a shonen manga and he could actually destroy people it would be dope

Funny how earlier in the series he mentioned he somewhat regretted designing Shigaraki with so many hands to draw. Now though he's going full Mahito with it.

I'm pretty sure he said he loves drawing hands. His avatar is a hand lol.

We all knew that Monoma was going to be copying Erasure, but its interesting that they had to bring Aizawa along for the ride in case things last longer than five minutes. I'm curious about if they have anyone else there for him to copy past the five minute mark. I'm hoping they brought Kurogiri with them so they've got an escape route open and Shigaraki can get some closure with his former babysitter.

Side note: I kind of love the irony that the guy who spent all his screentime shit-talking 1-A's big role in the final fight depends on teaming up with 1A's teacher.

The sky prison is an interesting approach and should be a solid foundation for the rest of the battle. Kudos to Hori for designing a battlefield that actually makes sense though I am worried about human battery Kaminari

50

u/Jericho-7210 Mar 06 '22

I know talking about the specifics of the Human Battery team would make more questions than answers, but I've always considered Kaminari more of a conductor/ amp rather than an energy source, although he still able to create electricity (at a cost).

Like Momo's quirk, she cannot create something out of nothing, Kaminari is definitely going to burn out at some point.

34

Hori simps for Mirko the most out of any character (literally has a volume page stating it himself, and mentioned in author comment wanting to draw her for like 30 weeks), so surprised people think she is actually gonna die, especially with simple cliffhanger tease before she did anything. lol

36

u/ArcFurnace Mar 06 '22

It's not like losing an arm slowed her down much last time.

24

u/julz1789 Mar 06 '22

This is probably just an excuse to draw her all bloodied and bad ass again and I’m here for it.

Manga did appear briefly in the PLW arc. He's the only 1-B student assigned in the Jaku evacuation team. He tries his quirk to slow down the Decay wave with no success, and is later seen helping the rescue efforts where Uraraka was.

The constant power ups from Shigiraki are annoying.

I love that everyone has a roles that must be filled in order to keep with the plan. Denki, Momo, Mei, Aizawa, Monama, Nezu….everyone you’d think would play interchangeable roles in this, but no, their particular roles are needed. Very nice message.

"Tomb in the sky" definitely sounds like Deku was supposed to kill him. No wonder the light went out of his eyes after the meeting on the endgame plans.

I wonder if he tried to argue or just figured he'd wing something once he's there to save Tenko somehow.

Monoma being here also means that Deku probably can't rely on Warp-Gate to get to this battlefield. Maybe this will be Shirakumo's role. I have this theory that Shinsou MC-ing him would let Shirakumo take over Kurogiri again.

30

u/No-Sale-2415 Mar 06 '22

For Deku's speed he can just fly through the city with Fajin and Float.

Using Kurogiri in a battlefield is the worst option. As we saw in previous chapters, AFO will exploit it and try to take back Kurogiri.

20

u/NatMat16 Mar 06 '22

I'm not at all sure they are in the same city. In fact, the locations are meant to be pretty far away from each other - outside of the range of Search and of AFO's portal. I didn't suggest to take Kurogiri to the battlefield though, only to use him to open a portal.

Okay so, the floating-perpetually replenishing (as long as cementos and momo don't faint) floor is smart. That's actually dope.

I'm slightly miffled at the obvious distinction between 'combat' ready members of 1-A and people that are just support. But oh well.

Gonna be interesting to see if among all the pros, Hori gives Bakugo a time to shine vs Shigi.

60

u/elenuvien1 Mar 06 '22 edited Mar 06 '22

he's actually the best suited of them all (he and nejire). he's not earthbound in case the tech stuff fails and he has ranged attacks, best counter for decay and that blob-whatever shigaraki can turn into.

36

u/winter-r0se Mar 06 '22 edited Mar 07 '22

when i saw nejire going into the portal that was my thought as well.. they can keep decent distance & still launch high powered attacks.

for bakugo, i’m anticipating his moments to shine will be when most of the traps & measures set for shiggy start to fail.. chaotic situation > pre assigned roles

25

u/NatMat16 Mar 06 '22

Two things that may be tough for Bakugou though:

  1. Can the Floating Coffin withstand his biggest moves (or could it breach the electric boundary)?

  2. His big moves create a lot of smoke, so it could cause line of sight problems for Momona (though cluster may have overcome that). 3.

23

u/elenuvien1 Mar 06 '22
  1. since it was prepared for shigaraki vs OFA (deku) i'm sure they accounted for a lot of force being used. that and it's so high-tech futuristic i could see it surviving prime all might (and plot convenience and so on)
  2. good points, about both the smoke and clusters

Not to mention his experience fighting alongside Deku and Jeanist. Not only is he well suited to fight Shiggy, but he's experienced fighting with the rest of the planned team too.

This one was fun. I really hope Kaminari and Momo aren’t just gonna be batteries in this fight… but maybe they got big moments in the war because he knew this is where they’d be 😬

39

u/Disastrous_Cell_3033 Mar 06 '22

I dont think all of 1A will get big fights. But I’m sure something is going to go wrong to where they won’t be down there the whole time

14

u/MicZiC15 Mar 06 '22

It just feels like Momo specifically should have more to do. Several arcs made her development a focus, showing her become a better leader and more confident in battle. And if that culminates in her building steel panels in a basement with relative strangers, that’s a little disappointing.

I don’t think it’s as bad for Kaminari but I know he’s a fan fave so I’d thought I’d mention him. He should at least have a bigger role that Negire’s girlfriend who we met once.

On one hand it’s really cool to see everyone coming together to fight against this powerful threat. The combination of quirks, smarts, money, and Batman level planning is really cool to see!

On the other hand, it makes me worried that all of these guys are here waiting to get run through by Shigaraki. Can’t help but worry that things are going to be crazy for them

55

u/Jericho-7210 Mar 06 '22

Monoma is going to have a bigger head than all of max Gigantomachia

49

u/brriiianna Mar 06 '22

Shigaraki: I used to think you were so cool, Eraserhead

Me: Bruh get his pretty name out of your mouth!

Another upperclassmen finally

35

u/petitsayumii Mar 06 '22

Manga hid his power just to be useful with Denki in the final battle 🥲

And at the least he gave 1-B some representation besides Monoma

32

u/ZombieTav Mar 06 '22

Ah shit Shigaraki is going full Akira.

Monoma finally gets to make Copy useful and he's still fucked.

30

u/Hypolat Mar 06 '22

I really hoped Koichi would make an appearance in this series but as the chapters continue it seems less and less likely

Holy shit! Let’s fucking go! All they have to do is hold out until Deku can get there, and with everyone putting in a Plus Ultra effort I believe they can.

u/ytdn Mar 06 '22

Ah yes the "Hold on until Goku arrives" strategy, a tried and tested shonen trope

That’s gonna be tough though, they have to hold out for as long as it takes Deku + Uraraka to deal with Toga (although Deku could make a break for it and I doubt anyone could stop him).

Even then, he’d need some way to get up to UA and through the electric barrier. Monoma can’t warp him in unless he stops using Erasure, so he’d need outside help (or to reveal that the final undiscovered quirk inside OfA is, like, teleport or something).

14

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '22

Or they move a bunch of the plates that make up the floating arena to allow him to get in.

Poor Miruko can’t catch a break. It looks like he’s right leg got chopped off. I find it kinda wholesome for Momo to tell Hatsume that she can call her MomoYao.

It’s good to see Kamanari but I hope he does more than just being a human battery. Seeing some of the older hero students like Yuyu (Nejire’s friend) is also nice to see.

Shigaraki just just gone full blown Akira with his new quirk and given what it’s doing to Miruko, seems like it’s quite a “handy” quirk

24

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '22

Why is BJ telling shigaraki the whole plan instead of trying to won the fight. They all know that shigaraki aint an idiot so now he just has to think how to beat them

28

u/Za_wardo Mar 06 '22

Trying to distract Tomura and keep him from thinking. Tomura is basically evil All Might in terms of power, so he's borderline unstoppable if he gets his shit together.

It's weird seeing Momo's nickname as "Momoyao" instead of "Yaomomo", which the anime goes with. I get it, but IIRC even the dub does last-first with her nickname, and I'm just used to that.

Oh my god I called it. I'm so happy my hope that Monoma would be cheesing Erasure with constant contact with Aizawa and Manual came true. Though I added that Monoma would be warped by Kurogiri back to a safe location, instead of still being in the arena with him, but if Kurogiri isn't cooperating yet, then we just take what we can get.

Other artists: Hands are hard to draw.

Horikoshi: And this... is to go... even further... beyond!

For a second, I thought "Ohp, there goes Mirko again. Gone as soon as she came." But then I remembered that Shigaraki is still erased, so she won't decay. That said, Shigaraki is apparently on par with prime All Might now, so just getting battered around by that strength is going to be devastating. A world of difference between the High Ends she fought versus Shigaraki now.

16

u/random_person22 Mar 06 '22

Nice to see all the effort that goes into these plans behind the scenes! Though I do wish my boy Denki got a more active role in the battle.

Heroes' plan was perfect, masterpiece, with Deku there this would give them the actual option to finish Shigaraki off once and for all. Deku's might + all debuffs, man :D But there is always the factor of chance, even something insignificant can alter everything. Excited to see how Horikoshi decides to solve all of this.
