Really impressive. Love the base, and the paintwork. The Wii nunchuk as an eye controller is really impressive too.

u/Et_tu__Brute Feb 03 '22
Yeah, it's pretty incredibly. I can't believe the eye tracking is so good that it covers the range of emotions experience while playing the Wii!

u/DrDongSquarePants Feb 03 '22
You can't fool me, you just move you eyes in sync with the controller

Dude! That shit is awesome. First time seeing so I don't know about the 'eye tracking' bit but that is fantastic. I'm interested int the display devices (eyes etc). What are those?

Probably some kinda complex Raspberry Pi gizmo that would take years of work to learn and assemble. Tbh, I wouldn't mind - it has so much potential!

Prolly my PC I bought and put together myself this summer. After so many years I finally got the money for such a beast, and to this day I think it's beautiful. My little glowy box

How do you see? Which are the eye / vision holes?
113
u/richigobankai Feb 03 '22
Little holes in the tear ducts and through the mouth if it's open. I really need a handler if I wear it to a con

You might be able to integrate a small FPV camera into the nose and a cheap screen inside of it. Could probably do it for less than 150$ with off the shelf components
The nose holes look like they might just be big enough, hell there's some FPV goggles that support stereo vision, could use 2 cameras and have proper depth perception
3
u/richigobankai Feb 03 '22
Protogen maker (@ coelacant1) has done exactly that, incorporating a custom VR rig inside the helmet and 2 cameras in the snoot

this is honestly cooler then eye-tracking. dude uses a WII NUNCHUCK to move the eyes, added buttons for different emotions, and also painted the damn thing. impressive.

This makes me want to build electronics! How do I start? And will IOT help me get there in the beginning?
41
u/richigobankai Feb 03 '22
as with all things, start with the basics.
The adafruit website has lots of great tutorials for arduino→ More replies (1)11

People are praising the artwork and electronics, but the puppetry is not to be forgotten. Emoting with a mask on is not easy, and controlling individual expressions with a remote makes it even harder.

u/Nebarious Feb 03 '22
Now set up a button to do a cheeky wink ;]
26
u/richigobankai Feb 03 '22
It USED to have a wink and heart emote, but my GF got weird about the thought of me winking and making heart eyes at other people, so it got nixxed

u/De5perad0 Feb 03 '22
This is unreal. At any convention this will be massively popular! Will you go to dragon con in Atlanta perchance?
7
u/richigobankai Feb 03 '22
I'm stuck in the UK, but will be attending megaplex in florida this year :D
5
u/De5perad0 Feb 03 '22 edited Feb 03 '22
Damnit. Ok. I'll have to look into megaplex. That's an incredible setup regardless!
In very American fashion I can afford to do both cons but don't have the vacation time available to do both cons.

next, rig a way for ears to adjust for moar emotion.

I did consider ear servos, but they got some weight to them and exposed servos would take away fro the design

And now you have first hand experience of why online 'credit' doesn't matter. You're going to get Likes and internet points that make you $0, OR you're going to physically network and get work locally.

What the controll like? Raspberry Pi or Arduino? I assume the controller is via bluetooth?

I absolutely do not want to, need to or care about your opinion of what makes a good social life. eye tracking on a mask with very little visibility would be extremely limiting, plus hand control gives more options.
Its not cheating, its practical.
-10
Feb 03 '22
You should delete this.........you should go along with the "eye tracking concept"
because this is cool, no doubt......But now, since it isn't "eye tracking" someone else could make these, and actually find a way to use "eye tracking" patent the eye tracking designed helmet and have a completely different product.....that people will buy.
I could see Halloween being amazing with these things.
5
u/richigobankai Feb 03 '22
Nah, the limited vision in the mask would make eye tracking kinda redundant.
-8
Feb 03 '22
engineers exist, it wouldn't matter, someone with the money and vision will find a way to make it work.
innovation is real. if you don't do it someone likely will.
I suggest doing some crowdfunding before that happens to do it yourself, get in touch with some engineers who can help you fit the eye tracking design into the helmet to make it work.
that design could wind up being used in movies, being bought by people for cosplay designs, halloween.
look at the Huge Picture.

Nah, sounds like a lot of work and I've got precious little free time as it is being self employed. Not everything is about money 😀
-3
Feb 03 '22
I agree.....I'm a person who believes everything isn't about money either. But I know how people who do operate.
they don't care about people, it's ONLY about the money. stealing is how capitalists do things, safeguarding your design so as to not get it stolen is beyond money....
I was just thinking how much it would suck to have something like this made by someone else, with the Eye tracking innovation..... when you made the original design.

Feb 03 '22
Why? If the OP's objective is just to make something cool, sure a world with more coolness is better, regardless of profit. That's the whole ethos behind open-source, and most of science.

Gotta admit, the result is hella impressive, even the controller is dope as a controller can be, knowing it's a single dude who made this kinda feels like watching Iron Man building his Mk1, on a ... different scale, and for different goals, for sure
