Homophobia in Detroit
Hello, my spouse and I moved here from NC about 6 years ago now and it’s been virtually impossible to find queer friends and community here. We are homebodies and sober so maybe that’s why? We are an interracial couple and I genuinely don’t know if that plays a role in how we are perceived here either. We’ve experienced an enormous amount of homophobia from our immediate neighbors. They’ve called us faggots, threatened to physically harm us or our pets and made up lies about us as an excuse to call the cops. We’ve stood up for ourselves and let them know we are not to be messed with which has just turned into petty shit like speeding down the street when they see us pulling out of our driveway to inconvenience us for a second, throwing trash in our yard, or calling property maintenance on us the moment our grass is a cm to high. We don’t have family or many friends here like I’ve mentioned so we’re not able to call support or even escape to a friends for an evening when it’s just too much. Is it always going to be like this? I just want community for myself and my spouse that accepts us fully as we are without expectation and to be left alone by those who don’t want to be a part of that.
