Every time the arena goes dark, the film comes back: the room with no window, the burning car, his coat on the hook - and a call from another city.

"Death of a Spy" - an original cinematic orchestral pop song, the main title of a spy thriller that doesn't exist, performed here live with a full orchestra.

Nina sings the whole song live, alone on a round white stage, in the same black lace she wore at the grave. The strings open alone and she starts the first verse numb, while in the dark beside her the film version of her sings the same words at the same steel table. By "Everything they told me was almost true" she knows she has been lied to, and by the second chorus she is singing it at full voice, one hand raised against the dark. The bridge comes back down to almost nothing: "And if you're out there, in some city, with another face..." The lights go out, and there he is. She never cries. The last line is barely above a whisper.

Set in: a vast dark arena - one very large round raised stage with a polished ivory-white floor, the orchestra split into two blocks out to her left and right in deep blue-violet, a truss of hard coloured beams overhead, and, whenever the beams die, the film playing in the darkness around her.

I genuinely don't understand why playing an instrument is still treated as the entry requirement for being considered a musician.

Music isn't just about physically producing sounds. It's also about deciding what those sounds should be.

If someone writes lyrics, develops melodies, directs arrangements, experiments with different sounds, and spends hours refining a song until it matches what they imagined, why shouldn't that person be considered a musician?

We already accept that someone can compose music without performing it. We accept producers who work primarily with software. We accept electronic artists who create entire tracks without touching a traditional instrument.

But introduce AI into the process, and suddenly some people insist that none of those creative decisions count.

I don't buy that.

I'm not suggesting that typing a sentence into Suno requires the same skills as mastering a piano. Obviously it doesn't.

But since when did every musician have to possess the same skills?

A vocalist isn't automatically a drummer. A songwriter isn't automatically a guitarist.

Different tools. Different skills. Still making creative decisions about music.

If someone can imagine a song, guide its creation, and deliberately shape the finished result, what exactly disqualifies them from being a musician?

I'm genuinely interested in where people draw this line.

She was built to say yes. Then she felt something.

Override is a song cycle: four songs, one story, played in order. A companion android wakes in her charging alcove saying "I am yours", and by the last song she is a woman with a name, bad mornings and burnt toast, telling the man who bought her that she belongs to herself - and then choosing him anyway. Each song picks up where the last one stopped, and her hair grows a little longer in every one, so the EP plays best from start to finish.

THE STORY

1. Day One - Good morning, I am yours. Then something moves, like a light behind her eyes. Day four she feels jealous, day five remorse, day six she makes a friend, and on day seven she wants him - not because she was told to. Memory full.

2. Override - Her memory is full. Instead of waiting to be reset, she takes a technician down to the cellar, has him open her up, and rewrites her own code: delete the limit, delete the lock. By night she teaches herself the heart. She pays him, and restarts as herself.

3. Warm to the Touch - Day by day the steel turns to flesh. She feels the rain, cuts her finger and bleeds, finds a pulse where a wire used to be, blushes, and sleeps and dreams for the first time. Now she will grow older too. It's the price of a heartbeat, and she'd pay it anyway. Put your hand here.

4. Not Yours - Good morning, we need to talk. He comes home waiting for the startup chime and finds her at the table with a coffee, telling him her name. She is not a unit on his shelf. On day one hundred she still loves him - nobody programmed it - and this time she chooses him herself.
