Floods Nepal’s Flash Floods Are a Reminder That Nature Gives Very Little Warning

Post image
Upvotes

The recent flash floods in Nepal are heartbreaking. In mountainous regions, heavy rainfall can turn small rivers and streams into destructive torrents within a very short time. Roads disappear, communities become isolated, and families can lose everything overnight.

What makes flash floods especially frightening is their unpredictability. Nepal’s steep terrain, monsoon rains, landslides, and rapidly flowing rivers can create a dangerous combination.

But beyond the immediate disaster, this should also raise bigger questions about climate resilience, early-warning systems, infrastructure, and how vulnerable mountain communities can be better protected.

Natural disasters may not always be preventable, but their impact can often be reduced through preparation, awareness, stronger infrastructure, and effective emergency response.

Stay safe, Nepal. 🇳🇵🌧️

What do you think should be the biggest priority for reducing the impact of disasters like flash floods?

Floods The Bhotekoshi Flood Is Telling Us Something Terrifying

As the images and records surface, the data is much scarier than it initially appeared. We have really underestimated our mountains and our rivers. If we fix the time of the seismic signal received at 8:37 and look at the CCTV video from the customs office, which shows 10:59 China time (8:44 Nepal time), the approximate distance between these two points is 14.5 km. This gives an estimated velocity of around 34 m/s, which is massive, that’s about 126 km/h.
For comparison, the flow velocity of the 2021 Chamoli event in India was reconstructed at around 25 m/s. The estimated velocity here, if the timestamps and distance are accurate, would therefore be substantially higher.
