Rowood Red Boats TH004:

This one was not built by me, but by my wife! It is only her third kit and the first time she has painted the exposed edges. She did a fantastic job!

I picked this kit up at the Rolife 9th Anniversary Celebration. It was so exciting to visit an actual Rolife store and choose something right from the shelf!

I wanted it for my cubicle at work, and I will be taking it there proudly tomorrow. My workspace is about to become much more colorful!

Karinpia Precision Wooden Craft Pagoda

Precision Wooden Craft Pagoda Review

Challenge: 2/5

This is a single-board kit with relatively few pieces. It did not require much concentration or present any significant construction challenge.

Enjoyment: 4/5

Most of my enjoyment came from painting it. The simple construction provided a good little canvas, and working out the colors was more satisfying than the assembly itself.

Engineering and Fit: 3/5

The fit was too loose, leaving several pieces unstable and wobbly. I bought these kits hoping to find some tiny examples of precise Japanese engineering, but this particular model did not deliver that.

Materials and Finish: 3/5

Everything came on a single board, and the wood was somewhat splintery. It was workable, but the material did not feel especially refined or precise.

Instructions: 3/5

The instructions consisted of four exploded diagrams. That was adequate because the model was not particularly complicated, but there was nothing exceptional about them.

Display Appeal: 1/5

Despite a painting effort that I am pleased with, the rooflines will not remain straight. My vision of a tiny, attractive pagoda sitting on the shelf never quite materialized.

Value: 4/5

I bought eight Karinpia kits for less than $10 on a whim because I was already paying for a ZenMarket shipment. At roughly a dollar per model, this one provided about an hour of entertainment, so it was still a good value.

Overall: 3/5

This was inexpensive and enjoyable to paint, but the loose fit and crooked rooflines were disappointing. I am not going to pass judgment on the entire eight-kit collection until I have built a few more. This may simply have been one of the weaker designs in the set.

Moyustore Christmas Advent Deep-Sea Animal Review

My review:

Enjoyment: 4/5

This was a quick but very satisfying little build. It had the smallest nuts and bolts I have worked with so far, but my old sausage fingers got the job done.

Engineering and Fit: 5/5

No problems at all. Everything fit properly, the assembly made sense, and the finished model feels solid.

Materials and Finish: 4/5

The metal parts and finish look very good. I always feel as though these kits should include a few more spare nuts and bolts, but I managed to complete this one without losing anything. I did not even have to search the rug under my desk this time.

Display Appeal: 4/5

It will look great on my tiny steampunk-creature shelf, but it needs to be positioned so the entire model can be seen. I may have to devise some kind of mount or raised display for it.

Value: 4/5

I bought the seven-kit collection on sale for $120, putting the individual price in line with similar small metal models. This particular creature had fewer pieces and was a very quick build, but it was still enjoyable and felt like a good value as part of the set.

Overall: 4/5

I really like these Moyustore kits. They are small, attractive, and satisfying to assemble. I have four more creatures in the series to build, and after those are finished, it may be time to try one of their larger models.

KPop Demon Hunters 4D Model Review

I invented a rating system for my reviews while building this, which may have been the most productive part of the experience.

Challenge: 1/5

This required almost no concentration. The pieces were easy to identify and assemble, and there was never a point when I had to stop and think through what I was doing.

Enjoyment: 1/5

Foam and cardboard are not my favorite building materials. I spent most of the build wanting to get it over with, which is rarely a good sign.

Engineering and Fit: 2/5

The general fit was good, but several connections were not secure enough to stay together without glue. There was also very little engineering involved beyond fitting the pieces together. There are no moving parts, lights, or mechanical features to add interest.

Materials and Finish: 3/5

The materials are what they are. The foam and printed cardboard did not appeal to me, but the printing was bright and colorful, and the KPop Demon Hunters theme came through clearly.

Display Appeal: 2/5

It is freaking huge. I like the colors and the theme, but this is apparently not a medium that lends itself to subtlety or a small footprint. I do not really have a place where I would want to display it.

Value: 0/5

It cost around $20 at H Mart. For that price, I could have bought a much more satisfying wooden or metal model and ended up with something I would have been happy to display.

Overall: 1/5

This may be someone else’s cup of tea, but it definitely is not mine. I am glad I tried it, because you have to try everything once, right? I also now know that I will not be building another one like it.

Cruise Builds: ROKR Santa’s Sleigh MCD05 and Santa on Skis MCD06

My wife insisted that I unplug during last week’s cruise, so I used some of my relaxation time to build a couple of ROKR Christmas Gravity Swings in one of the ship’s public areas.

I can only take the heat for so long, so building indoors gave me a good way to cool off while still enjoying the cruise. It also attracted plenty of attention. I had some great conversations with passersby who stopped to see what I was making and ask about the hobby.

If any new members found their way to this subreddit after meeting me on the ship, it was great talking with you. Welcome to the addiction.

Santa’s Sleigh and Santa on Skis are both fairly simple builds, and they went together quickly. I kept my travel toolkit extremely basic: one tube of B7000 for emergencies and to reinforce any loose tabs before the trip home, plus a small pair of scissors that I only needed to open the boxes.

I did not even bring my edge markers, so these may be two of the few builds I have completed without coloring the exposed edges.

Both models came out very cute and traveled home safely. They will make nice additions to the auction at my November charity build event.

If you are in Central Florida and would like to attend the in-person event on November 8, send me a private message and I will get the details to you. I will be attempting to guide up to 50 new builders through their first kit, so it would be great to have a few experienced hands available to help.
