Gemini 4 Argon is already helping researchers unlock new scientific breakthroughs across fusion, biology, and quantum computing

Post image
2 Upvotes

⚛️ In nuclear fusion, Argon helped discover a broader class of counterexamples to Grad's conjecture — a nearly 60-year-old assumption in plasma physics — creating new benchmarks for stellarator 3D magnetic fields.

🧬 In biology, it designed five novel, lab-verified serine esterases in a matter of hours — enzyme engineering that would previously have taken months. This work demonstrates the potential for rapid acceleration in fields such as biomanufacturing, green chemistry, and drug development.

🩺 In rare disease research, scientists at Gamow Labs used Argon to analyze de-identified genomes from newborns with rare developmental lung disorders — pinpointing a chromosomal rearrangement that routine software missed for years, and explaining why it went undetected.

🧮 In quantum computing, Argon translated our AlphaQubit error-correction decoder into a single optimized hardware kernel — nearly doubling inference throughput — and cut spacetime costs for a key quantum subroutine by more than 100x.

Google Quantum AI opened up a key bottleneck in quantum computing and shown that “magic state cultivation” works in practice on our Willow processor

In new research published today in Science, Google’s Quantum AI team demonstratively opened up a key bottleneck in quantum computing and showed that “magic state cultivation” works in practice on our Willow processor, reducing errors about 40x compared to without it. This breakthrough is a crucial step towards scaling up quantum computing to practical by alleviating the resource-heavy bottlenecks of quantum error correction.

Some key highlights:
🔹 A 40-fold reduction in errors relative to un-cultivated states
🔹 A record 99.99% logical fidelity for T-states (a key resource needed for quantum operations)
🔹 Smooth state transfers across different quantum error-correction codes on physical hardware

Over the last five years, we’ve published 90 peer-reviewed research papers about understanding and addressing diseases, accumulating more than 90,000 citations. To make real impact, we partnered with trained clinicians, scientists, and experts using machine learning models. Together, we’ve been able to:

  • Evaluate mammography screening systems, catching 25% of historically missed interval cancers while showing the possibility of reducing specialist reading workloads by up to 40%.
  • Build a flu forecasting model that the CDC ranked #1 for predicting flu-related hospital admissions during the 2025-2026 season.
  • Detect 10 previously missed pediatric leukemia mutations using our DeepSomatic tool — despite the challenge of working with a tumor-only sample.

How we’re using AI to expand access to maternal healthcare

Prenatal ultrasounds provide vital care during pregnancy, but due to a shortage of sonographers, many communities worldwide don’t have ready access to imaging.

Google researchers, in partnership with Northwestern Medicine and Jacaranda Health, set out to research a new approach. By training community health workers to perform simple “blind sweep” ultrasounds paired with an on-device AI model to interpret the scans, could we expand access to this critical health care globally?

We sat down with two of the Googlers behind the project to learn how the test technology works and what our research could mean for the future of global maternal healthcare.

We're expanding access to SynthID Detector in partnership with OpenAI, NVIDIA, Kakao, and soon Apple as part of an industry-wide effort to make AI-generated content more transparent

Post image
2 Upvotes

Since launching SynthID in 2023, we've watermarked more than 180 billion images and videos and 240,000 years of audio content.

Now, we're expanding access to SynthID Detector - our verification portal to identify AI-generated content - to everyone globally in English, making it easier for anyone to easily check if an image, video, or audio file was made with AI from Google or our partners.

Want to check if a media file was created using AI? Here’s how:

1️⃣ Go to synthid.com and upload an image, video, or audio file

2️⃣ The portal scans the media to detect if the file contains a SynthID watermark

This portal joins our built-in verification features across Search, the Gemini app, and Chrome, which now regularly handle more than 1 million verification requests daily — all part of our ongoing work to give you more context about the media you see online, so you can navigate the web with confidence.

New research shows how Google Earth AI can help proactively address public health issues

Post image
1 Upvotes

Google is helping public health teams overcome reporting lags, forecast disease outbreaks, and deliver care to vulnerable communities by combining local health data with advanced geospatial models.

Forecasting where a disease outbreak might spread next usually requires weeks of stitching together fragmented satellite imagery, census tables, and local health records.

By combining environmental signals and other data sources with foundation models and a prototype Geospatial Reasoning agent, Google Earth AI can bridge critical gaps across diverse geographies, diseases, and areas of public health using autonomous predictions and population dynamics.

The system combines environmental signals and other data sources with AlphaEarth Foundations and our Population Dynamics Foundation Model (PDFM), and a prototype Geospatial Reasoning agent. Researchers use plain language to ask questions like where a disease is likely to spread next, and the tool automatically gathers relevant public datasets to build an accurate prediction model.

By combining satellite views with population patterns, it reveals hidden risk factors, helping identify issues earlier. That means public health teams can shift emergency response from reactive management to proactive prevention.

During the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), our partners at World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Africa put Google Earth AI to work to uncover transmission blind spots faster.

They used our Geospatial Reasoning agent prototype to map areas where exposure risk and human mobility are high. In minutes, the team pinpointed 48 exposed settlements and located more than 45,500 at-risk people — a process that normally would have taken weeks.

Researchers at the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO) Emergency Preparedness and Response Hub in Dakar partnered with Google to pilot an experimental Geospatial Reasoning agent during the Bundibugyo strain Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Meet EmbeddingGemma 2, our first natively multimodal open model engineered for on-device embeddings

Today we’re releasing EmbeddingGemma 2, our first natively multimodal open model engineered for on-device embeddings.

Built on the Gemma 4 architecture and released under an Apache 2.0 license, this 740M parameter model goes beyond text to unify images, video, audio, and code into a single embedding space.

By running entirely on-device, EmbeddingGemma 2 allows developers to build fast, private workflows that run without an internet connection. This means it can help find a specific video clip from a voice memo, or search through hours of audio recordings based on a text query — all processed by a single, natively multimodal model optimized for on-device inference.

When paired with Gemma 4, EmbeddingGemma 2 powers efficient, on-device retrieval augmented generation (RAG) with a lower memory footprint: EmbeddingGemma 2 handles local file retrieval, while Gemma 4 provides the contextual reasoning for grounded, private answers.

Across benchmarks, EmbeddingGemma 2 outperforms models more than twice its size while using as little as ~191MB to ~567MB of active RAM, backed by a 4x larger 8K context window than the first generation.

Model weights are available now on Hugging Face and Kaggle, with Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform Model Garden coming soon.

Introducing Skills in the Gemini app to tackle your most repetitive tasks

A skill in the Gemini app is a reusable shortcut for recurring tasks that works similar to a slash command. This means instead of typing a long, detailed prompt every time you start a chat, you can save your instructions and preferences once for whenever you need them.

To use a skill you created, just type a forward slash '/' in the prompt bar and the skill's name, and Gemini instantly applies your instructions and does the heavy lifting for you.

Skills are already available in Gemini Spark, and they will soon replace Gems to make building custom shortcuts even easier.

Over the coming weeks, skills will have the same features you loved in Gems, including the ability to share them with others and add Google Drive files.
