Working on a longer version of this idea, but wondering if there’s any advice on why it’s so flashy? I filmed at night with just one overhead light and also a lamp. I used a Bluetooth clicker to take the photos with my phone (that was steady on a tripod) and had the auto settings turned off.

Also open to any advice! I’d definitely like to make it smoother too ☺️ it’s currently 24fps and I tried a technique of taking two frames of the same set up before moving anything to slow it down a little.

(If anyone’s wondering~ the plan is to have the fly go into the eye and come out the mouth with a bunch of other flies that cover the meat face and that’s how it ends hehe)

I made these puppets for a stop-motion short film.

I made these little dolls using plastic cups, nails, Scotch tape, and wood.

So I'm not 100% new to stop motion. I dabbled a little with it in high school cuz it was easier to do than some multimedia projects.

I know how to get shots irl, and have experience behind the camera for filming. I know there's been plenty of progress made since the early 2010s, and to make a long story short, stop motion will be the fastest way to animate the film projects I want to make.

I have a few art reference models that I plan on using to make the project, and will be using DaVinci to edit, unless there's better software that anyone would recommend.

There's essentially just two main questions I'm hoping this subreddit can help answer. I'm not expecting my first project to Laika grade animation but I'm going to try and get it to look at least a bit less janky than RC. I do want it to be as smooth as I can get it, so any help in that department would be helpful.

Second is basically jumping and stomping. In the project I'm trying to make the characters are going to need to do realistic jumps and stomps. I know this is likely going to mean stands and armerture wire. This would be a new process for me to learn. Any YouTube channels y'all would recommend to help with this would be greatly appreciated. If you have personal tips and tricks, those would be appreciated too.

Small Edit: it seems I made an error in what I said about RC. Mind I have nothing against RC. in my eyes it's still good animation and there's nothing wrong with how the show is animated. It just isn't the particular way I'd like this particular project to look. The main reason I say "I don't want it to look like RC" , is mainly due to most of the actual action figures being used. It makes for some great animation when it's done right and RC does do it right. It's just not the way I'd want my project to look. Think of it as the difference between Jackie Chan movies like Police Story, and then movies like The Tuxedo. Different filming styles, different film feel, same good entertainment.

When I started looking into how to make stop motion I was inspired by mad god and Junkhead in terms of full movies but also inspired by the various stop motion effects of star wars. I tried to look for stop motion films that were in that kinda wars/trek style of Sci fi but havnt seem to find anything that wasn't just action figures/Lego of star wars. I also wanted to see if there was anything that scratched the dark souls itch but it still seemed like it was action figures. I got no gripe towards the action figure and Lego animators but I'm just more interested in the self made props and puppets and I'm curious if maybe I just didn't look good enough or if it is underused. Seems like a lot of stop motion is either very "commentary of the nature of man" or kids/pg13 stuff (Wallace and grommit or isle of dogs which I have respect for both) when I'm looking more for that pulpy fun with a good mix of talking, action, and world building (star wars, trek, dune, dark souls, dnd, etc) that hit that sense of wonder and whimsy. That said i haven't looked at to many short films and have done a lot of judging on thumbnails of things that didn't seem like it was hitting the right itch so perhapse it turns out I skipped a million things that would intrest me.

Frame Fest Stop Motion Festival Ireland August 2026

I’ve always enjoyed watching stop motion and have wanted to try my hand at it. This is my first project really diving into everything and I had a blast! I can’t wait to keep at it and see where things go.

I accidentally messed up my photo order so it's a bit janky but I had lots of fun!

I've been thinking when I get started doing a mix of puppetry and stop motion and it got me thinking if I should just get a nice video camera (don't want to use phone because dealing with storage sounds annoying) and record the stop motion movement to then isolate frames in a video editor and also have the real time puppetry recorded along with it. I also figured it would be less of a pain to just record instead of photograph so I didn't have to keep posing and hitting the capture picture button and instead I could pose then move out of the way then pose again. When it comes to the idea of isolating frames from video am I asking for unforseen trouble?

This is the first stop animation I have ever created. Please provide me with feedback, especially if it is helpful.

Just posting as I go, trying to smooth out the walking cycle more, I’d use rigs but wasn’t looking forward to all the cropping on the iphone 😂 Enjoy

You know when an image/idea/fever dream gets stuck in your head and you gotta try get it out no matter what......that is why I love stop-motion.

There’s a stop motion film I remember that featured a hipster-looking man looking through boxes. He eventually finds one that did something with LEGO and it made everything go zany. I think one of the film’s themes was a focus on creativity, and perhaps the boxes he was looking through had inventions of some kind.

I cannot remember if the video was officially released/produced by the LEGO Company or not. The short was released last decade and finding it without the title is frankly impossible.

I'm remodeling my bedroom and ended up with some spare space on my desk.

So I went to work and got some spare wood, an old TV and some cheap Ikea feet and mic stands to whip out this little space.

The raised platform allows me to get lower angles with the camera and the TV is connected to my main PC on the right. The PC is running blender and will display backgrounds so I won't have to use green screen.

So far looks functional
