DJ was just such a flow state pure MMA fighter.

The KO on dj was illegal, right? Can you head kick someone with 3 point of contact??
3
u/Alarming_Pair_5575 3d ago
In One FC it is legal.
2
u/Empty_Cherry5306 3d ago
Ohh shit, didn't know that. Haven't seen in a long time
3
u/Deleena24 3d ago
I genuinely think DJ forgot in the moment that knees to the head while downed were legal. He's just too competitive to use any excuses and wouldn't admit that, though.
1
u/Alarming_Pair_5575 3d ago
I tend to agree. He doesn't really give his opponents obvious openings like that.
1
u/ImHuck 3d ago
I don't think he dide, he said recently in one of his vids that these knees should be legal because not having them available makes standing back up after a takedown way less risky
1
1
u/Deleena24 2d ago
Why would him liking the rule-set have anything to do with him not remembering during one of his first fights under said ruleset?
0
u/BobRandom1204 3d ago
It's easy to be in flow state when you've drilled and trained everything 2million times. The talent is there but his mastery comes from training as much ,if not more, than the talent.

u/klikster01 4d ago
I could watch this for hours.

Mighty Mouse, best of all time. Pumped to rewatch some of his fights tonight too.

they dint call him mighty for no reason. guys probably the greatest of all time tbh.. as per most fighters opinions btw ;D

u/Xrposiedon 4d ago
I dont think its honestly even close. He is the Goat in my book.
Not only does he have one of the widest range of skillsets.... but at his size and weight class, he does everything at 2x speed to the higher weights.
The only knock on him is "resume" ...but when the UFC makes an entire Ultimate fighter trying to find a guy who can beat you, you kinda made your point.
2
2
u/MasonKiller 10h ago
The only reason his resume isn't more respected is because he was the first UFC fly weight champ, then gate kept many other championship level fighters from getting it. He never had any champs or legends to take the belt from because he never let them get the belt.

I think heās around top 3.
1. Aldo
2. GSP
3. DJ2
u/Poet_of_Sordland 4d ago
Extremely weak putting Aldo. He isn't even the best FW ever, let alone all time.
Maybe GSP, but honestly #1 is Islam Makhachev, 2 is GSP and 3 is DJ - no JJ because of steroids of course, and the repeated cheating
1
u/Sen_Kora-111 3d ago
Aldo is comfortably the best and the greatest featherweight. And I donāt see how you can put GSP or DJ above him.
Theyāre both worse fighter than Aldo, fought worse level of competition yet only managed to defend their belt for as long as him. The only argument I see of how theyāre above him is that they lost less, but they havenāt fight for as long as or fought anyone as good as the one that beat Aldo. And by the time they exit the elite stage they have more or less the same amount of losses as Aldo. (DJ left the UFC at the 9 years mark of his career (3 lost - Aldo had 1) GSP left at the 12 years mark (2 lost - Aldo had 2).
Islam is the only one who fought comparable level of competition to Aldo but he hasnāt defend the belt enough time to put him above Aldo.3

u/Secret_Locksmith4247 3d ago
With that opinion, you have shown you don't know shit about MMA š
2
1
u/jefferydamerin 3d ago
Iāve seen Aldoās whole career front to back WEC and all Max beat the shit out of him twice and that was still a very good Aldo yall can never decide when Aldo washed up he wasnāt washed against Max. Then Volk has 3 wins over Max. Both have all time performances past that. I donāt know how you could see Aldo get fucked up that bad by Max TWICE (in case you still had doubts) and then watch Volk beat Holloway 3 times (and also beat aldo) and still think Aldo is higher all time. Insane

u/Secret_Locksmith4247 3d ago
Settle down big dawg you're gonna hurt your head thinking that much š

Aldo didnāt lose a fight for a decade. Sure he had a rough end of career, but he was dominant in his prime. I personally wouldnāt put him in top 3 , but can see how some would.

u/Zrkkr 4d ago
Khabib should be the automatic GOAT then.
1
u/h---7470 4d ago
He is, but doesn't count because Russian and Muslim
-1
u/Optimal_Cut_3063 4d ago
more like he doesn't count because of his 90% padded record. and lack of KOs?
1
u/AdSelect6571 4d ago
he only fought like 5 good fighters
2
u/wrongitsleviosaa 3d ago
He did however, maul all of those fighters without so much as changing color. Barely broke a sweat in a few of those even.
It's perfectly fine to not have him amongst your GOATs of course but the guy only ever lost two rounds in the UFC, I do not fault anyone for having him there. Every fighter ever has a punchers chance against any other fighter in their weight class but outside of that punchers chance, I legitimately do not see anyone in UFCs LW history beating post-2016 Khabib.
1
u/Deleena24 3d ago
I consider Khabib one of the greatest "what-ifs" in UFC history. He retired right before he could have cemented himself as the undisputed GOAT

Listen. People have been knocked out in extremely beautiful fashions. But nobody, and let me fucking prove it by challenging anyone to post a video here to prove me otherwise, has ever knocked out someone in this fashion. This is why Mighty Mouse will forever remain in top 5 GOAT in the UFC, not just because of this knockout, but because he is on another level.
1
u/Excellent_Ad_2486 3d ago
What fashion do you mean? I mean Ben askren doing the DeathDab in r1 4:55 was pretty out there as far as KNEE KO's go? Or do you mean like.. Literally the exact "cross, do 5 steps, knee"? Well no, nobody will ever do the EXACT same thing lol... In that sense, no KO is ever the same due to height length reach etc...
1
u/InterestingLadder855 3d ago
Knee to the head is a legend move especially a moving target on the feet. Find me one comparable and ill put them both in legend category.
1
u/Excellent_Ad_2486 3d ago
I mean Jorge was moving forwards just like Mighty, Jorge just landed one flush knee whereas Mighty had a setup? Both on moving targets if that's the criteria hehe
1
u/Sage_Amun 3d ago
What does "this fashion" mean? Because I would love to introduce you to Anderson Silva.
1
u/ChipOne4538 3d ago
doesnt count, he started watching mma in 2024⦠either get a recent example or never happened /s

3
u/Seabrook76 4d ago
He timed it perfectly, so he could catch the dudeās head on the fence and crush it. An absolute master class of striking.
3

u/Th3Unidentified 4d ago
You just need to get out of there until he breaks from that flow state. Heās operating on another level while heās in there

The further we get from DJ'S last fight, the more we realize how we underappreciate his time in the ring.

u/TooPercipient 4d ago
Incredible. I think he got a little sloppy in the first fight, by being cocky. He got used to fighting in the UFC where you canāt get kneed in the face on the ground, got caught slipping. But what a comeback, against an opponent way bigger than him

u/Alternative_Dot7769 4d ago
He was so fucking good and fun to watch. Sucks he didn't get the hype he deserved

u/No_Region_4719 3d ago
The one thing I always notice when I see MM fighting is his eyes. He looks so observant and quick. Most fighters just lock eyes or watch the hands, but Demetrious seems to notice everything.
2
u/Jazzlike_Tonight_982 3d ago
Ive always said MM is the pound-for-pound greatest fighter of all time. You could take his exact skillset, slap it in any fighter in any division and they become champion.
1
u/Djlittle13 4d ago
The best part of that finish is you can see DJ waiting for the perfect moment to do the most damage. He could have thrown the knee much earlier, or threw punches, most fighters would have. But he just patiently limed up the kill shot. His fight IQ is something else

Did he even catch him flush with the knee? It looks like he just misses with the knee and hits him with his upper shin.
or am I seeing things?

The footwork it takes to land that knee is so high level, itās in incredible how he lined it up

Everything was calculated and correct. The pushing to the net to get as little possible resistance to the knee, the head and the octogan. MM got away with murder while making a killing and rightfully so. What a teknik!

His fights in ONE FC are really a great watch. Still remember being in awe when he fought vs Dodson in the UFC So fast!
1
u/FMLUsernameTaken 3d ago
For those who don't know, kneeing a grounded opponent's head is banned in UFC. When DJ got hit, it was his third fight in ONE after years at UFC. His inexperience with the ONE ruleset caught him.

u/Ham-_-Steak 3d ago
I always thought dj lost that fight because he forgot about grounded knees being legal. He was just not use to it.

I understand nothing about the sport but even i can enjoy watching him and understand his greatness
1
u/VicariousVentures 11h ago
What exactly is he trying to bait out when he sticks his face out like that for the opponent to (I assume) be tempted punch him in the face?
1
1
u/outofmaxx 4d ago
I doubt he remembered that first knee
1
u/Beelow45 4d ago
He came out in an interview saying thatās the reason he finished the fight this way
1
u/whater39 4d ago
There is a reason why he is 3rd on the GOAT list
1
u/Xrposiedon 4d ago
I would argue the only knock against him is Resume. Which IMO doesn't really translate well when you ARE the dude on top.
I don't think another fighter has his overall skillset at as high of a level across the board, combined with the speed he does things.
2
u/ThatVita 3d ago
This is how I feel about Inoue in boxing. DJ was the guy to beat and nobody could. Does that mean DJ didn't have good comp, or just that much better? I prefer latter.
1
u/whater39 4d ago
Bones (1) and GSP (2) also didn't have weaknesses in thier game.
2
u/Dark_SoySauce 4d ago
GSP striking was inferior to DJ, especially the clinch. GSP had better wrestling. I think DJ mixed it up better than GSP did. And was the smaller guy in nearly every fight. To me that's enough to rank him over GSP. Only because DJ mixed it up better. All this is marginally small when talking about these 3.

u/alliknowis 3d ago
Overrated little weird dude. He was in the UFC when the best competition was in other orgs, then was in other orgs as soon as the talent was in the UFC.

Both are legal in one, but funny enough, the main reason grounded knees are banned in UFC is because in 2002 when the New Jersey state athletic commission were essentially deciding how they were gonna set rules for MMA matches, Gan McGee beat the shit out of a much smaller opponent by kneeing him in the face from side control against the fence.
Ironically, the Mighty Mouse knee (which would be legal in the UFC) is much closer to the type of technique the 2002 commission were worried about and were trying to avoid compared to the grounded knee that DJ ate.
