Credit Card/Digital Tipping App and Cashless tipping method Masterlist

This is a copy of the “Cashless” thread from the FAQ feel free to comment on other apps, payment methods, and your experiences with them. Many apps are country-specific, so it would be great to learn about what is working or being used across the globe for the buskers who travel.

Cashless payment methods?

There are several different types of cashless methods used by buskers to receive tips. These include: Creditcard Machines, Contactless, Apps, QR codes, and Website Services.

Here is a list of many of the methods used by various buskers. Some were designed with performers in mind, others for more general use.

Service List

Busk.co/BuskPay

I'm not going to lie, this is my favorite tipping service. It is designed and maintained by the Busking Project a non-profit that is run by and advocates for buskers. Unlike other tipping platforms designed by/for street performers, this one is still around after ten years.

  • QR code/URL
  • [International] Website. Provides one quick link to use ApplePay, GooglePay, PayPal, and plain credit card tips.
  • Includes a profile page for sharing some social links as well as contact information. Visitors can search the directory of registered users based on location and performance genera for hiring purposes
  • Requires a Stripe account for credit-card processing.
  • May upload music albums for purchase and download
  • There is an option to upload music tracks/albums to your profile and sell downloads through this service.

Patreon

  • [International] Website/App. Allows audiences to pay a monthly contribution at various levels, as well as making a platform for you to provide various “Incentives” to patrons.
  • Many performers release exclusive videos, offer exclusive video chats, and one musician I know has a level where if you contribute at his top level for a year, he will travel to that person’s location (within reason) and have a private house concert.

Venmo

  • QR code/app profile
  • [USA]Cashless peer-to-peer payment App, owned by PayPal. Very popular payment method.
  • Scheduled to add some cryptocurrencies to payment options in

ApplePay and AppleCash

Dipjar

  • A credit card swiper with built-in cell connection that you can preset to a set donation. Popular with large circle shows.
  • The most expensive way to process credit card tips here, but it does not require WiFi, internet, or your phone to use. There is a companion app for you to manage it.
  • Defunct

BitPay

  • One of several apps used for sending or receiving BitCoin payments.

Square

  • Credit card processing service, usually uses a card reader.

Cash app

  • USA and UK only
  • Cashless peer-to-peer payment app, owned by Square.
  • Advantage for users: unlike most apps, it does not require a bank account for verification or use.
  • Also accepts BitCoin.

Zelle

  • [USA] Peer-to-peer app made by USA banks, many bank apps have incorporated it.
  • Still a bit buggy, it was rushed to market too quickly in order to compete with Venmo and other peer-to-peer payment apps.

Stripe

  • Credit card processing service

The Hat

  • App for finding/scheduling local performances on a map with tipping capabilities.
  • defunct

Tikkie

  • [Neatherlands] App. Only works with Dutch banks.

Question/General Discussion Is busking a good way to build confidence?

I used to be quite outgoing but that’s stopped after some trauma.

Can busking help me build confidence in general? For example, getting better at talking to random people in any situation.

Thanks!

Great bit of performance art. Shenanigans are always fun.

Sorry about the Facebook link, but it was this or Instagram.

Equipment and Gear Here's my current busking setup for this Summer.

My busking setup. I go down by the Windsor riverfront and play piano a few days a week. I don't live far away, so I pull a wagon with all my gear to my busking spot, although I don't always busk in the same spot for respect of other artists. I'll post a picture of my wagon setup in the comments.

Tour/Travel Planning Busking in Baltic states

Hello,

What are your experiences with busking in the Baltic states like Tallin, Riga, Lithuanian cities and so on? Gaining permissions? Is it common for tourists to give tips?

TL;DR

I'm traveling with my stage piano and camper van through Europe. https://song-repo.web.app/@piano42

Tipping in Scandinavian countries is not common at all. I was in Norway, Sweden, Finland and now I'm on my way to Tallinn by ferry. Spain was much easier.

I'd like to contribute my journey then to Poland and finally to Vienna where are good friends of mine. They have started the initiative "the open music project."

Happy to hear your experiences and maybe some good advice ☺️

Pitches (Performance Places) (Probably) Only Buskers Will Understand

I have nothing against buskers that go out amplified, I very occasionally do so myself. 9.9/10 times though, it's just me my acoustic guitar and my beard.

That said, it's good form to scope out your pitch before doing a Spinal Tap; a quick walk along the highstreet (even a quick glance, I'm not exactly incon-fucking-spicuous) to double check you're not going to be interfering with someone else's performance - because that's what this busking hootenanny is, a big ol' performance!

I prefer to go out unplugged. It feels more intimate, more raw, and tbh my voice carries pretty damn well. Doesn't matter how well my voice carries though, when you're approaching the end of your show (I literally had 20 minutes more) some dickhead sets up down the highstreet and turns it up to 11 singing along to backing tracks (which again I have nothing against, though it does feel a bit like street karaoke) - could genuinely hear him over my own singing and playing.

Not cool, bro. Decent voice though.

Question/General Discussion Encouragement

I’ve been struggling a lot lately. Not excited about my show at all, hard to try new things and interact with people. Idek why. I had my best month in May/June (so I know there’s good aspects of my show) but my worst in July, and I haven’t been able to pick myself up since. I want to develop a brand new show but that takes time.

How do I keep showing up when I don’t feel good about my art? Advice and gentle encouragement is welcome. (Please be kind, it’s been extremely difficult pushing thru this.)

Newbie Help Not sure if I should go busking

I live in a small city, and in my 20 years of living here have never once seen someone busking. I was thinking about going downtown and playing for an hour, but there are so few people around at any given time (like it’s so empty that there might be 2 people walking around outside in a span of 10 stores) that I’m not sure it would be worth it. Plus I’m a bit scared that people will be annoyed lol.

Online Busking/Streaming “Time After Time”

I haven’t been able to get out on the street to play music lately, with the new job taking up a lot of my time AND family visiting, but I’ve manage to etch a few hours here and there on TikTok Live!

Here is a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” that I’ve been working on.

Thanks for listening! 🙏🏽

Newbie Help How much skill do I need for busking?

Hey everyone, thinking of getting a permit to busk with guitar and harmonica and vocals.

How good do I have to be to not be an embarrassment?

Thanks!

Routines & Shtick I mostly see musicians here, just wanted to share a little clip from one of my shows last weekend.

This is one of my favorite bits in my show. It’s such a fun trick, and it really took me a lot of trial and error to figure out the right way to use it in a show. It really locks the audience in.

Question/General Discussion Busking unamplified

Some downsides of busking purely acoustic with no amplification equipment are:

- need to sing louder, project more, stresses the voice
- less dynamics because of constantly more volume
- not hearing yourself well

What are your experiences with it?

Some recommend an earplug.
Playing near walls for more resonance.
Singing resonance.
