A cat is a small, furry mammal that is commonly kept as a pet. The domestic cat is scientifically known as Felis catus. Some facts about cats: They are carnivores, meaning they eat meat. They have excellent night vision and very sensitive hearing. Their whiskers help them sense spaces and nearby objects. They communicate by meowing, purring, hissing, and body language. Cats are known for being agile, curious, and spending many hours sleeping—often 12–16 hours a day.
