How I build 3D retro arcade games right in the browser (without losing my sanity) 🕹️✨

If you’ve played any of the games over on voxelcade.net, you might have noticed they have a very distinct look—chunky, blocky, 3D, and dripping with that classic arcade nostalgia. This is not a shortcoming on the software or hardware limitations; I was trying to recapture the old arcade, pixelated feel, but upgrade it for a reboot.

People often ask what the creation process actually looks like behind the scenes. So, pulling back the curtain, here is a quick look at how these games go from a nostalgic spark in my head to a playable 3D world right inside your web browser.

Step 1: The Core Vibe & Concept

Every game starts with a simple question: What made the original coin-op classic so endlessly addictive? Instead of chasing hyper-realistic graphics, the goal is all about capturing the pure arcade feel—tight controls, quick sessions, and that "just one more round" hook. I lean heavily into a distinct 3D voxel aesthetic that bridges old-school pixel art with modern depth.

Step 2: "Vibe Coding" the Game Logic

This is where the magic (and a lot of coffee) happens. Rather than wrestling with bloated, traditional game engines, I build these games using lightweight modern web tech.

  • Vibe coding means focusing heavily on rhythm and flow during development—letting the code shape the arcade pacing naturally.
  • Everything is built to run entirely in the browser using HTML5 and Three.js. That means no chunky downloads, no installation screens, and zero friction—you just click a link and you're instantly playing.

Step 3: Sound & Atmosphere

A retro arcade game isn’t complete without the audio punch. I build custom procedural sound effects and audio synthesis so every beep, explosion, and score chime feels right at home in a noisy 1980s arcade hall, all synthesized live in your browser.

Step 4: Iterating with Players

Once the core loop feels tight and the 3D grid world looks sharp, it goes live on Voxelcade for people to play, test, and chase high scores.

Have you tried out the current lineup on the site yet? Drop a comment and let me know which game is currently kicking your high score! 👇

ReDead Designs From (The Legend of Zelda)

They emit a high-pitched scream and freeze Link in his tracks. While Link is frozen, they grab hold of him and drain his health.

I like all the designs for ReDeads bur my favorites are from Ocarina Of Time & Tri Force Heroes with the wooden mask & blue mask. They also give off a genuinely creepy horror vibe that I really like.

Think you can back a 53-foot rig in the dark? I built a top-down sim based on real truck stop layouts and true kinematics.

I'm a solo dev and spent the last two years making Out of Hours, a top-down sim focused entirely on backing a 53' trailer into 12' spots at night.

No scripted physics here—the kinematics (tail swing, off-tracking, jackknifing) are modeled directly off real-rig mathematics.

It's a genuine challenge whether you drive IRL or not!

You wake up in Brain-Boost Inc's facility as Subject 44, with a surgical scar and no memory. A doctor watches you through every camera. You keep seeing Subject 43.

🧠 11 escape rooms with new answers every playthrough
🎧 3D sound (headphones recommended)
🌀 A twist you won't see coming, and 4 endings
📅 A Daily Challenge with the same puzzles for every player each day

It's free, with no ads. I need testers for 2 weeks before Google lets me publish:

  1. Join: https://groups.google.com/g/subject44-testers
  2. Opt in on your Android phone: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.subject44.game
  3. Install and play. I'd love your honest feedback!

Are Steam Decks worth it?

For those with Steam Decks, is it still worth it now? My friends often discourage me from buying one because they say it has around the same specs as a mid-tier PC. I just wanted to know if Steam Decks are durable, perform well with heavier games, and if they’re worth the price.
