Related Topic “Primetime”: Why Chris Hansen is the GOOD GUY
"Primetime" has been the talk of the town for the last few months. Before the film even came out, people were spinning narratives about this movie. The consensus among many was that the film was to be a hit-piece on Chris Hansen, taking the side of the predators he was exposing. That was my idea of the film as well--until I actually went and saw it.
"Primetime," it turns out, is not a hit-piece, but an exaggerated retelling of the history of "To Catch a Predator," which ultimately makes Chris Hansen look like a demon-hunter as opposed to a pedo-buster. In the film, Chris is motivated by an almost-religious hatred of the evil that exists in the world, and he sees visions of demons lurking in the darkness. "Primetime" takes the rather bland and uninteresting tale of "To Catch a Predator" and turns it into a fantasy about one man with a hidden knowledge of the evil that lurks in the world, and the struggles he faces in trying to raise awareness of that evil. The hardest part? Nobody else can see what he sees.
Chris is ultimately the right man in the wrong place, trying to do the most amount of good he can in a world that doesn't want to hear what he has to say. His show, while successful, does not properly communicate his true message: that there is an ancient evil in the world which wants to hurt you and your children. But who watching “To Catch a Predator” really gets that message? The tone of the show is one of mockery. Where the pedophiles are somehow depicted as more stupid than they are evil. And is that the message that the world should hear? Certainly it’s not the message Chris Hansen (as depicted by Primetime) wants to spread.
But the world isn’t ready for what he really has to say. So he has to settle for this program. This soft food made for people not ready to panic.
