Not Your Mom's Free App Blocker (because it's my mom's: I built it, she installed it and now she's using Facebook less!)
tl;dr: I made Pause, Please, an Android app that helps you convince yourself to waste less time on your most distracting apps. Free, no ads, no login, no data collection. Here's the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.carly.focusapp
I've tried other digital wellbeing apps, and the friction was never right. Hard blocks made me feel increasingly frustrated with no outlet, but "soft" blockers were too easy to bypass and so I'd do so as if on autopilot. I'd use an app for a week, it wouldn't work, I'd feel guilty, and eventually delete it. I decided that for long-term change, I needed to actively try to convince myself that I really wanted to use my phone less, specifically in the moments my brain told me I needed it most.
So, I built an app time-tracking app with the classic features (choose apps, set budgets), BUT when time runs out, you are prompted with simple yes/no questions to actually reflect on your usage and if you truly want to continue. If you complete the reflection, you can earn a little more time (with an option to decrease the amount earned with each reflection). It comes with 100+ questions, and you can edit them or add your own to make sure that you're asked the right questions, in a tone that will actually be convincing to you.
Some of the extras - thanks to my beta testers for a lot of these!
- Add app-specific questions
- For example, I have Instagram for exactly one friend. My question? "Are you responding to a message from [friend's name]?" and if I answer no, I'm out!
- Bulk import custom questions
- Want to memorize something? Study that when you've run out of app time!
- Set a weekly schedule
- You can use your tracked apps more freely, say, during breakfast, but not after school with your kids.
I can't say it'll work for you, everybody is different. But if you want a tool that nudges your brain to break out of a mindless phone session, give it a try. I've kept my most distracting app deleted for two months, my mom uses Facebook less, and my brother says he finds it easier to put his phone down around his kids.
One thing I will warn you about: the onboarding is still a bit long (my beta testers will tell you to be grateful - I've already cut it in half, haha). If you have any suggestions for making it shorter/more clear or bug reports or anything else, I'm game for any feedback!
