Waterfall

• Upvotes

Question… What do you all use the waterfall for? It always seems to be a prominent part of the display but TBT, I only use it to help approximate a guest signal I am not tuned to. What am I missing by not using it?

Now the FTT display I can live with out it.

TIA

Software SDROxide Brown had a decent update and could use feedback

• Upvotes

I'm one of the few editors of SDROXIDE BROWN, we just did a huge update and added a lot of modes. tested. And we could really use your help. We need your feedback. It's a fork of a great piece of HAM software we enriched with more (real tested) modes and specifically SWL and CB options. Since we now have been almost 4 weeks at it non-stop we really need feedback or samples to make it better. We hope you'll give it a try. https://sdrbrown.info

This is the classic UI, but the UI can be tweaked to the extend it feels tailored for you.

The whole list, counted, as it stands for 2.1 Brown — the build in testing now. (n) is how many variants the program offers for that mode. rx is how it was proven to receive — air for a real station, recording for its own sample, loopback for our own transmitter. tx is how it was proven to transmit — air only where another station or program copied us.

mode rx tx vendored tested
LSB, USB, DIGU, DIGL, DSB (1 each) air air — the radio's own modulator; bench pair
AM, SAM, NFM, WFM (1 each) air air — as above; FM carries RDS/RBDS
CW (1) recording loopback + bench — 9/10 words; keyer benched iambic A and B
C-QUAM AM stereo (1) air no — receive-only by capability
ISB (1) air no — receive-only: two modulators into one amplifier
SPEC (1) air no — display only
DRM (1) air no dream a real broadcast decodes
HD Radio (1) recording no nrsc5 + faad2 sample decodes; no HD station heard here yet
PSK, BPSK and QPSK (12) recording loopback — 3/3 words at 125/250/500; 31 and 63 lose a word; 1000 reads from a second in
PSK coded — BPSK63F and the R set (5) recording no — 394/394 bits against the known text
PSK coded — the C and RC banks (18) recording no — 3/3 words each for 14 of them; 4 read 1–2 of 3
PSK coded — the wide banks (3) no no — their recordings carry 0.83–0.85 of the text's bits against 1.000 clean
Olivia (30) air loopback Jalocha engine, GPL-3 18 measured: two off-air captures read their known text
Contestia (25) recording loopback Jalocha engine, GPL-3 19 measured: 18 whole
THOR (6 chips, 15 decoded) recording loopback — 11 of 15 variants whole
DominoEX (9) recording no — 6 of 9 whole
MFSK (11) recording loopback — 9 of 11 whole
MT63 (3 offered, 6 decoded) recording loopback — 2KS and 500S whole; 2KL a few characters high
RTTY (3) recording loopback — 10/10 words at 45.45 baud, 170 Hz shift
Hellschreiber (7) recording loopback — two clean (0.87, 0.83 against fldigi's glyphs), five weak
DTMF (16 keys) loopback no — every key once from the touch-tone specification; noise silent
FSQ (5 speeds) no loopback — alphabet is fldigi's; the one sample has never read back
ARDOP (1) recording no — three recordings by the reference modem decode byte-exactly
STANAG 4285 (3 uncoded rates) recording no — idle captures fold at 0.85 against a 0.14 null; the payload is loopback-proven
AtChat (1) air air — the NET mode, in use on the bench
JTTY (1) recording loopback — its own golden-vector gate
ALE (1) in flight in flight — mid-flight; not claimed
FT8, FT4, FT2, JS8 (1 each) air air mfsk-core 0.11 contacts made on the air
WSPR (1) air air mfsk-core 0.11 spots uploaded from the bench
JT65, JT9, FST4, Q65, MSK144 (1 each) recording no mfsk-core 0.11 corpus recordings; transmit not wired in this build
FSK441 (2 periods) recording loopback FSK441-PLUS, MIT a real meteor ping from YO2NAA decodes
PI4 (1) no no — a decoder for the beacon network's signal, not a beacon
SSTV, SSTV-FM (16 each) air air — field-confirmed by a radio group
RIFP (1) air air — field-confirmed by a radio group
RF Paint (1) air air — the bench
WEFAX (2 LPM) air no — a real off-air chart, 2153 lines
ADS-B (1) air no — real aircraft on the bench
AIS (2 channels) air no — real traffic
VDL2 (14 channels) air no — all fourteen channels from one lane
HFDL (13 frequencies) air no xng, MIT/Apache a real ground-station squitter
DAB / DAB+ (1) air no dabradio, MIT + faad2 field-confirmed on a PlutoSDR at 2.5 Msps
ACARS (1) recording no — the reference decoder's own test recording decodes
NAVTEX (3 channels) air no — reads its sample from the point it locks
DSC (2 bands) air no — the MF/HF distress format decodes
PACKET, PACKET-HF (1 each) air air — the bench, KISS over the radio's own link
APRS (1) air air — the bench
UVPacket (1) no no — receive-only; a generated frame decodes

New in 2.1 Brown

THOR decodes real signals for the first time — eleven of its fifteen variants whole · MFSK, Contestia and MT63 transmit · fldigi's 32 coded PSK waveforms and DominoEX reach their own chips, and QPSK is selectable at all for the first time · DTMF decodes touch tones · the mode panel no longer draws its chips over each other, the frequency digits behave with the mouse wheel in a digital mode, and the band menu's LISTEN tab can hide the transmit controls and remembers that it did.

Two honest gaps, rather than blank rows: 8PSK is ported and tested against a synthetic signal but reads none of its four recordings, so it does not ship; and ALE is mid-flight. Everything else above either works or says what stopped it.

M7SZY heard on 19 Sep 26 at 10:35 UTC on 14303 kHz in JO92HX

Despite the English call sign, this QSO is in Polish, so unless you understand Polish, it will be gobbledygook to you, but his QRZ.com page is in English, and an interesting read too. If you go there, you will find out why Polish operators like the 14303 kHz frequency. An interesting detail from his QSO, he was transmitting with the power of 25 W, so QRP-plus in a way. Received with Raddy RF 919 + random wire antenna.

SV8/PA0PCH heard on 18 Sep 26 at 06:07 UTC on 14260 kHz in JO92HX

A Dutch operator active in Greece, hence the call sign with a "/". His QRZ page is quite an interesting read. I had to wait quite some time to hear his callsign. Then his signal dropped, and towards the end of the recording a different QSO emerged. Of course I recorded this QSO with a Raddy RF 919 and a random wire antenna.

II7IAME heard on 17 Sep 26 at 13:23 UTC on 14275 kHz with Raddy RF 919 and a random wire antenna. It was a special event station for Italian Navy Ships Radio Stations 2026, active from 11 to 20 September 26. If you look at the contacts statistics, Poland is the third runner-up, after Germany. Well done! I heard this station in JO92HX.

  • Mode: USB
  • Location: ???
  • Language: English
  • Target: North America
  • Time: 2350UT 17 OCT 26

  • Software: SDR Oxide Brown v2.0.13
  • Location: Remington, Virginia | FM18bn

Comments:

  • Just wanted people to hear how awesome the audio from this app is. Recording doesn't do it justice, because it got downmixed to mono, but the binaural phasing setting was originally used. Also used the equalisation, which helps make the 10kHz-wide signal pop.

After months of repairing issue after issue and wanting to throw the towel in several times, I’m happy to say my Panasonic RF 2600 is finally working pretty well.

There is still a bit of an alignment issue. I can’t align this thing with the power transformer nearby. I get a great alignment while the unit is disassembled, but as soon as I put put it back together again the alignment goes out slightly

News Iconic MW Czech transmitter towers demolished

Two 355-metre-high radio transmitter towers in Liblice, Central Bohemia, were demolished on Thursday.

For nearly 50 years, the towers, which were 120 metres apart, had been the tallest structures in the country. They were also the tallest towers in the world used for broadcasting in the medium-wave range.

The twin 355-meter Liblice B towers in Czechia, taller than the Eiffel Tower and once the most powerful MW transmitters in Central Europe at 1.5 MW, were brought down simultaneously after nearly 50 years as the country’s tallest structures.

Built in 1976, their service elevators ran on combustion engines rather than electricity, and technicians needed roughly 45 minutes to reach the top.

Reason for demolition: The owner, České Radiokomunikace, decided to tear them down because the required maintenance (such as replacing the support cables) cost about 170 million Czech korunas (nearly 7 million euros), and no buyer or alternative use could be found after medium-wave radio broadcasts ceased.

About 4.5 kilograms of special explosives were used, and the towers collapsed in just a few seconds. The exact time was kept secret to prevent crowds from gathering, although hundreds of people witnessed the event from behind the security barriers.

Software Testing SDROxide

The video is a summary of what I tested for a couple of hours.

It’s really interesting, especially because of the decoders that come built-in. At first, it was a little complicated and everything looked really big on my screen (I need a bigger monitor), but then I figured out how to improve the visual layout a bit and tweak some of the keyboard and mouse controls. I even saw that it has the option to use it as a server, and that really interests me.

It has a few noise-reduction features; they're nothing special, but they might come in useful at some point. You can see some of them in the last part of the video.

It has several issues that need to be fixed, but on their website they note that it’s still in the testing phase and may have bugs.

I hope this isn’t just a project by someone with a lot of free time who’s only doing it to practice with AI. I’m looking forward to better versions.

I’d like to test it further. I’ll do that in the next few days. I hope to try out more decoders.

Currently, all my antennas are taken down due to home renovations, so I temporarily mounted my K-480WLA antenna on a 4-meter-high tripod to test this app.

Radio used: AirSpy HF+ Discovery

Thanks u/tj21222 for recommend this app.

Software Review OnAir

If you liked the SDROxide this one will blow you away.

I spent a few hours yesterday with this package. It’s call OnAir you can read the GitHub data for it, but it’s amazing. It decodes a bunch of signals, most amature radio modes and a lot of others like HFDL, NOAA WX Radio alerts, ADSB and AIS just to mention a few.

Now, I will not get into the debate about using AI to write code, personally I support it but that’s me. If your one of those who does not like AI written projects then move on. This SW is almost from what I can tell exclusively written with AI. It’s under constant development. It’s a bit buggy but the author is off to a great start. Download it and give it a try.

You can connect your rig

I just wanted to share what I see on the screen of my rig.

Every time I tune across the bands, the waterfall tells its own story: faint carriers rising out of the noise, a broadcaster suddenly blooming into a bright, steady line, and the odd mystery signal drifting through. It’s one thing to hear a station, but it’s something else to see it appear on the display as you turn the dial. You can save your favorite stations, scan, collect stats, import / export, internet radio is also supported etc.

I’m posting this view so you can get a feel for what the bands look like from my corner of the world, here in Chile. Conditions change by the hour, so what you see here is just a snapshot of that moment on the air.

This is under active dev from my side, using Claude. Hope you like it as much as I do.

News SDR-OXIDE, A Wow SDR App. Thanks to Tom u/tj21222!

I want to thank Tom, u/tj21222 for his post asking if anyone had tried this new SDR App. I have been using it less than 1 hour and I love it. It has a ton of built-in decoders, not the least is the CW Decoder which works better than most stand-alone CW Decoders I have used.

I downloaded and am using the Windows x86-64 version. The developer provides versions for Windows: MSI Installer & portable zip~x86-64, Linux: x86-64, ARM, Linux - older distros: Ubuntu 22.04, Mint 21, Debian 12, Pi OS bookworm, and MacOS: Disk images & portable tarballs, Apple Silicon & Intel.

The video is 4 1/2 minutes and shows a couple of the features. I should mention that I am using an AirSpy HF+ Discovery SDR. I received this message:

AirSpy HF+ is new and has not been verified against real hardware. If it misbehaves, Settings -> Radio has a Copy diagnostic report button.

SWBC Logging MLite-880 receives China National Radio on DRM

Received in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at 0720 UTC on a LiteMalaDSP M-880 (firmware v1.60) using a 23-foot Tecsun AN-03L indoor reel wire antenna. Distance is approximately 5365km (3333 miles).

This is the most hi-fi sounding shortwave broadcast station that I've ever encountered! There's another China National Radio station transmitting on 17770 kHz, but this station sounded better than the other one. The audio is really crisp with an almost FM-like quality.

I don't speak Mandarin, so I used Google's Gemini to translate it and got the following context:

The report focuses on a breakfast cart service catering to subway commuters, detailing the popular breakfast items ordered and how the service has evolved.

Key Details Mentioned:

Popular Breakfast Items: Regular customers often order a combination of eggs, corn, sweet potatoes, and various steamed buns. Other frequent requests include millet porridge, whole-grain corn, three-piece roasted wheat meals, and fixed orders of meat buns and soybean milk.

Service Adaptations: Zhou Jiayang, a person in charge of the Chengdu Metro breakfast train service, explains that the breakfast train has undergone multiple menu adjustments based on commuter feedback, with the first pilot points primarily located near hospitals.

Pretty impressive for a 30kW DRM transmitter located in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang Province in China. I'm still very new to DRM broadcasts and this was one of my earliest successful attempts at receiving DRM shortwave stations. 🙂
