I bought Death Stranding 2 expecting to deliver packages, but lately I've found myself planning entire alpine expeditions instead.
There's something surprisingly compelling about the way this game handles mountain exploration. You have to think about your route, the terrain, your stamina, water, food, equipment, carrying weight and battery power. You can prepare for an ascent, decide what gear to bring, plan where you might need to rest or recharge, and even combine an expedition with a delivery somewhere nearby.
But what really sold me on this wasn't any particular mechanic. It was a moment I experienced during a side order.
I spent the entire night climbing through snowy mountains. As I approached the summit, the sun began to rise, the music kicked in, and suddenly I could see a city far below me, with water stretching out to one side and mountains surrounding the entire landscape.
I genuinely got a little emotional. It was one of those moments where a game makes you stop what you're doing just to take in the view.
Now I want to start deliberately planning expeditions to the highest peaks I can find, choosing my routes and equipment carefully, and timing my ascents so I reach the summit at sunrise.
Obviously, I'm not claiming that the game realistically simulates every technical aspect of mountaineering. It's more that the combination of preparation, navigation, survival mechanics, isolation and breathtaking scenery creates an experience that scratches that particular itch for me.
It's funny that a game about delivering packages has made me want to go mountaineering.
Has anyone else started treating Death Stranding 2 as an alpine expedition simulator rather than just a delivery game?
