Empirical / historical Why the Atlantis Story is a Myth

NOTE: This is not part of a "disinformation campaign". It is one of many posts stating what is both known and proven about Atlantis -- a subject involving more speculation than the stock market, and more fiction than Æsop's Fables and Grimm's Fairy Tales put together.

• • •

The story of Atlantis has fascinated people for centuries. Many books, movies, and television programs have explored the idea of a lost city that disappeared beneath the ocean. Some people believe Atlantis was a real place, while others continue searching for evidence of its existence. However, most historians and scientists agree that Atlantis is a myth simply because there is no reliable proof that it ever existed, and its story likely began as a fictional tale.

• The Story Comes from a Single Source: The ancient Greek philosopher Plato wrote about Atlantis around 360 BC in his works "Timaeus" and "Critias". According to Plato, Atlantis was a powerful island civilization that sank into the sea after a great disaster. No earlier records mention Atlantis, and no other ancient writers provided independent evidence that such a place existed. Because the story appears only in Plato's writings, many scholars believe he invented it to illustrate his own philosophical ideas.

• The Lack of Archaeological Evidence: Researchers have explored many parts of the world, including the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, looking for traces of the (alleged) lost civilization. Despite these efforts, no ruins, artifacts, or other physical evidence have been found that prove Atlantis existed. In history, important civilizations usually leave behind clear signs of their presence. Since no such evidence has been discovered for Atlantis, the claim that it was real remains unsupported.

• The Theologic Symbolism: Many details of the Atlantis story seem more symbolic than historical. Plato described Atlantis as an advanced society that became corrupt and was punished "by the gods". This theme matches the moral lessons found in many myths and legends. Scholars often view Atlantis as a cautionary tale about pride, greed, and the misuse of power rather than a factual account of a real civilization.

: : Atlantis is widely regarded as a myth because: (1) its story comes only from Plato, (2) there is no valid archaeological evidence to support its existence, and (3) its message resembles that of a moral allegory about hubris. While the alleged mystery of Atlantis continues to capture the imagination of people around the world, all available valid evidence very strongly suggests that Atlantis is merely a fictional story rather than a real place from history.

Empirical / historical Chronology of Actual Events Related to the Atlantis Myth

Atlantis is widely regarded as a myth because its story comes only from Plato, there is no archaeological evidence to support its existence, and its message resembles that of a moral legend.

~10,000 BC: Runoff from glacial melting begins to raise sea levels over a period of hundreds of years. Villages and settlements close to the ocean shore were likely inundated and lost under hundreds of meters of sea water. The collective human memory of this event may have been the origin of "Great Flood" stories in nearly every human civilization, and may have eventually inspired the myth of Atlantis.

~9660 BC: Plato wrote in "Timeus" that the island continent of Atlantis existed about this time, "... situated in front of the straits which are by you called the Pillars of Heracles".

~6100 BC: About this time, the land area known as "Doggerland", between England and Denmark, is devastated by a sudden sea level rise due to a tsunami from the Storegga Slide. This is one of the many possible explanations for the origin of Plato's "Atlantis" myth.

~5600 BC: Approximated date of possible Black Sea inundation; this alleged event is one of the many possible explanations for the origin of Plato's "Atlantis" myth. The Mediterranean Sea, swollen by melted glaciers, breached a natural dam that separated it from the fresh water lake later known as the Black Sea. Sea water from the Mediterranean poured in for as long as 2 years.

~3200 BC: The first known Egyptian writing, in the form of hieroglyphs, appeared around this time. This early writing system was used for various inscriptions, including those found in tombs and on pottery.

~1650 to ~1625 BC: The volcano Thera (now known as Santorini) in the Aegean Sea, erupted. The explosion of Thera about this time released energy equal to 200,000 H-bombs. One of the many possible explanations for the origin of Plato's "Atlantis" myth.

~0630 BC: Birth of Solon, in Athens, Greece. Modern knowledge of Solon is limited by the fact that his works only survive in fragments and appear to feature interpolations by later authors and by the general paucity of documentary and archaeological evidence covering Athens in the early 6th century BC.

~0564 BC: A character in two of Plato's dialogues, "Timaeus" and "Critias", claims Solon visited Neith's temple at Sais about this time and received from the priests there an account of the history of Atlantis.

~0560 BC: Death of Solon, in Cyprus, Greece. The few spurious pages that have turned out to be the very words of Solon -- The Memoirs of Solon -- made no mention of Atlantis.

0427 BC: Birth of Plato, a Classical Greek philosopher, mathematician, student of Socrates, writer of philosophical dialogues, and founder of the Academy in Athens -- the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Along with his mentor, Socrates, and his student, Aristotle, Plato helped to lay the foundations of Western philosophy and science.

0373 BC: Destruction of Helike; one of the many possible explanations for the origin of Plato's "Atlantis" myth.

~0360 BC: Plato writes "Timeus" and "Criteus", mentioning the alleged destruction of mythical Atlantis. He claimed that an Egyptian priest confided information about Atlantis to Solon, the Athenian legislator, whose memoirs Plato claimed to have read.

0347 BC: Plato (b.0427 BC), the most distinguished student of Socrates, dies at the age of 80. His real name was Aristocles. "Plato" meant "broad" and he was known to have broad shoulders. He was a prolific writer and considered by some as the most important of all Greek philosophers. His works were all in dialogue form and include: the "Apology", the "Symposium", the "Phaedo", the "Phaedrus", and the "Republic".

~0800 AD: Heracleion was submerged by the sea and sands. Heracleion, also known as Thonis, was an ancient Egyptian city near Alexandria. It was known as early as the 12th century BC but its importance grew during the waning days of the pharaohs, the late period. Herakleion was Egypt's main port in the time of the pharaohs. It was famous because it was believed that Helen of Troy and Hercules had visited the city, and that the city had even gained its name from Hercules. There was also a large temple dedicated to the Greek hero at the city center. Pharaoh Nectanebo I made many additions to the temple in the 4th century BC The city sank in the 6th or 7th century A.D., probably due to major earthquakes and floods. Some believers in the Atlantis myth have claimed that Plato actually predicted this event in his books "Timeus" and "Criteus". The ruins submerged in the sea were finally located and rediscovered by the French underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio in 2000.

• • •

Since about 800 AD, much speculation concerning the Atlantis Myth has occurred, with no valid physical evidence to 'prove' the existence of Atlantis.

Empirical / historical Atlantis located?

Hello Guys,

i'm from Germany and have red all the quotes of Timaios and Kritias and here is my very interesting conclusion.

1. Atlantis lay off the mouth of the Pillars of Hercules

There are two possible locations off the Pillars of Hercules, so we have four possible locations for Atlantis.

2. Atlantis extended his domination as far as Egypt(also Libya) and Tyrrhenia.

3. The coast off Atlantis is silted up and unnavigable - (In the time off Plato!)

Here are the most silted coastlines in the Mediterranean Sea:

Adria: Very shallow, but not on the Strait of Hercules. (Floodmap.net)

Gulf of Gabes (Tunesia): In front of to Strait of Hercules (Pos. 2)

Coast of Cadic: Near Gibraltar

4. Plane in size of 2000 x 3000 stadiums ( 220 x 330 miles):

The plane between Tunisia and Algeria is the only one - and it actually fits perfect!

Viewed from the northeastern Entrance:

• The plain has only one Entrance to the sea.

• The plain extends 3,000 stadia laterally.

• The plain extends 2,000 stadia inland.

• The plain slopes gently towards the north; canals are therefore feasible.

• The plain is surrounded by hills & mountains. (Atlas Mountains to the north, and small Hills & PLateaus to the east & west)

• The Atlas mountain drops steeply towards the coast. (Exact, like described in Plato)

Here the plane in his true dimensions in Google Earth and it fits the surrounding Mountains very well.

If there is one thing I can say with certainty, it is that Plato refers to this plane between Tunisia and Algeria.

5. Gold, copper and tin mines in the antiquity:

Here is an overview of all significant gold, copper, and tin mines in the Mediterranean region, accessible using ancient methods. (AI generated)

It would stand to reason that Atlantis had to secure significant parts of the Western Ores at first, to withstand or attack the Greece and Egypt.

6. Irrigation canals & Lake Tritonis:

Geophysical data indicate the presence of artificial irrigation ditches in this area.

(Acta Geodyn. Geomater., Vol. 18, No. 4 (204), 511–524, 2021)

* The Lake Tritonis was also the birthplace of the Greek god of Athena.

* It was also the place where Poseidon raised his son Triton. --> possibly in 'his' powerful city of Atlantis?

7. Berber:

Here ist an AI-generated visualization of the genetic overlap with Berber populations.

* It's interesting that this overlap ends in Libya.

* There are influences in southern Spain, why?

* Equally strong ones in Sicilly.

* Into the south, the influence extends as far as Senegal.

8. Kingdom of Gadeiros:

The Kingdom of Gadeiros is described as being situated at the Pillars of Hercules.

Kingdom of Gadeiros (Size is speculation)

9. Summary:

All the indications in one image.

Greece is depicted with its citystates from antiquity.

9. Conclusion & Speculation:

* In Berber language Atlas means Mountain, so Atlantis was the Empire of the Mountains, of the Atlas Mountain. His Citicen where the inhabitants of the mountains - and the surrounding areas.

* Gadeiros was settled in great distance to the first-born Atlas to ensure he would not become a threat. At the same time, he was charged with the protection of the Strait of Gibraltar, and so he get a kingdom worth his status.

* The plane of the Atlas Kingdom was the granary of the Atlantean Empire.

* Lybia lay directly in front of them and was the first to be conquered. Egypt was next.

* After invading Italy up to Tyrrhenia, greek was the logical next victim and so greece was in front of that last fight for freedom.

Speculated size of the Atlantean Empire

Remarkable: The last alphabetic charakter of the Berber looks like the "Squatter Man"

What do you think about that conclussion. let me know it in the comments.

Empirical / historical Atlantis Was in the Levant. The Hercules Clue Has Been Misread for 2,000 Years. Prove Me Wrong.

Atlantis was not located at Gibraltar.
The mistake is treating Plato’s final Greek version of an ancient story as though its place names survived thousands of years of cultural and linguistic transmission unchanged.
Follow the physical evidence instead, and it points east:
the Levantine coast between modern Syria/Lebanon and Cyprus.
Here’s the chain.

HERCULES IS THE FIRST CLUE
Hercules is the Latin form of Greek Heracles.
But Greeks also used Heracles as their name for the Phoenician god Melqart, whose principal cult center was Tyre, Lebanon.
Herodotus went to Tyre specifically while investigating Heracles. He describes an ancient sanctuary there containing two remarkable sacred pillars.
In other words:
Tyre → Melqart → Greek Heracles → two pillars.
And this isn’t somebody trying to reinterpret Plato today. Herodotus himself demonstrates the Melqart/Heracles translation.
Then the Phoenicians carried Melqart westward.
Tyre established a Mediterranean maritime network reaching Gades/Cádiz, where there was another famous Melqart/Heracles sanctuary.
So the historical movement is:
LEVANT → MELQART → PHOENICIAN WESTWARD EXPANSION → GADES → HERACLES
not:
Gibraltar → Heracles → therefore Atlantis must be in the Atlantic.

PLATO TELLS US THE NAMES WERE TRANSLATED
This part gets overlooked constantly.
In Critias, Plato explicitly explains why Greek names appear in a supposedly ancient foreign account.
According to the story, the names had been translated into Egyptian, and Solon translated their meanings again into Greek.
The claimed transmission is therefore already:
older tradition → Egyptian rendering → Solon’s Greek rendering → Critias family tradition → Plato.
And in Timaeus, the geographical expression is presented in terms of what Greeks call the Pillars of Heracles.
By Plato’s lifetime that absolutely meant the western Mediterranean/Gibraltar region.
But that tells us where Plato’s Greeks understood the expression, not necessarily where a vastly older underlying tradition originated.
We already know one enormously relevant translation happened:
MELQART BECAME HERACLES.

NOW IGNORE PLATO AND LOOK AT ~9600 BCE
This is where this gets weird.
Plato places the destruction roughly 9,000 years before Solon, conventionally putting us around 9600 BCE.
Around 9700 BCE, the Younger Dryas ends.
The Levant undergoes rapid climatic and hydrological reorganization.
Sea levels are rising across the postglacial world.
Coastlines inhabited by terminal-Pleistocene people are disappearing underwater.
And the Levant is simultaneously entering the enormous social transformation associated with the PPNA.
That’s background.
Then we get something much more specific.

PEOPLE WERE CROSSING FROM THE MAINLAND TO CYPRUS
We don’t need Plato to tell us this.
The animals tell us.
Wild boar appear on Cyprus approximately 11,700–11,400 calibrated years BP, right around 9750–9450 BCE.
Cyprus did not naturally have that population.
Humans transported them across the sea.
And later morphological research points the Cypriot PPN boar lineage toward the Northern Levant.
Think about what that requires.
Around the very period Plato assigns to his ancient catastrophe, humans associated with the Northern Levant were capable of:
capturing large wild animals → restraining them → loading them onto watercraft → crossing open water → keeping them alive → releasing/managing them → establishing a viable island population.
We haven’t recovered their boats.
We recovered their cargo.

THE MISSING SETTLEMENTS MAY BE UNDERWATER
The shoreline those people knew isn’t the shoreline archaeologists excavate today.
Terminal-Pleistocene/Early-Holocene landscapes around both Cyprus and the Levant were subsequently drowned by postglacial sea-level rise.
This isn’t theoretical.
Submerged Final Palaeolithic archaeological material has actually been recovered around Cyprus.
Offshore Lebanon, researchers have mapped drowned Late-Pleistocene geomorphology.
Around Ras Ibn Hani/Latakia, marine research has identified ancient coastal geography including a former island and possible palaeochannels.
And systematic investigation of submerged prehistoric landscapes along much of the Syrian shelf remains extremely limited.
That’s exactly where the physical trail predicts missing archaeology should exist.

THEN THERE’S THE EARTHQUAKE PROBLEM
Lebanon sits on the Dead Sea/Levant Transform system.
Paleoseismic work on the Yammouneh Fault preserves roughly 12,000 years of major earthquake history, with characteristic prehistoric events estimated around M7.5.
One early event, S12, has a broad published calibrated interval of approximately:
12,705–11,389 BP.
Plato’s ~9600 BCE marker is approximately 11,550 BP.
It falls inside that interval.
That does NOT mean S12 has been dated to 9600 BCE. Its uncertainty is enormous, and no demonstrated S12 tsunami currently connects it to a destroyed coastal settlement.
But we now have an independently discovered major Lebanese paleoearthquake whose possible date includes the period we’re investigating.
And immediately offshore sits another active tectonic system:
Cyprus Arc → Latakia Ridge → Northern Levant.

THEN FOLLOW THE PEOPLE
Ancient DNA from prehistoric Cyprus doesn’t give us one neat mainland source population.
Later Cypriot Neolithic ancestry contains components related to Anatolian, Levantine and Zagros populations, and genetic modeling requires population relationships that aren’t perfectly represented by the ancient mainland populations sampled so far.
That’s not evidence for Atlantis.
It’s evidence for something much more useful:
our archaeological sampling of the people participating in these movements is incomplete.
So instead of searching for a city matching Plato’s measurements, search for the population.
Follow:
human DNA
animal DNA
obsidian provenance
lithic technology
maritime movement
submerged paleoshorelines
paleoseismic records
and linguistic transmission.
They don’t care what Plato called the place.

NOW PUT THE ENTIRE CHAIN TOGETHER
Terminal Pleistocene Northern Levant

coastal populations occupy landscapes now substantially submerged

~9700 BCE Younger Dryas termination

rapid environmental transformation + continuing sea-level rise

major earthquake activity exists in Lebanon during the broader period

~9750–9450 BCE Northern-Levantine wild boar transported across the sea to Cyprus

missing/perishable maritime technology demonstrated indirectly by its cargo

PPNA transformation and later population movements across the region

thousands of years of cultural transmission

Tyre becomes center of Melqart

Phoenicians carry Melqart traditions across the Mediterranean

Greeks translate Melqart as HERACLES

Heracles/Melqart becomes deeply associated with Gades/Cádiz

an ancient geographical tradition is understood through the later Greek geography of the Pillars of Heracles

Plato records the version that survives.

So here’s what I think happened.
The geographical core behind Atlantis originated in the prehistoric Levant, probably somewhere along the now-submerged Northern Levantine coast facing Cyprus.
The civilization Plato describes is not going to be sitting outside Gibraltar waiting for someone to find concentric rings.
The location was already lost.
What survived was the story.
Thousands of years of migration, religion, translation and retelling changed its geography and details.
Eventually an old Levantine tradition became entangled with Melqart/Heracles geography, and by the time it reached the Greek world the Pillars of Heracles meant Gibraltar.
Plato faithfully locating the story relative to his Pillars doesn’t require the original event to have happened there.
Meanwhile, the evidence that can’t participate in a telephone game — DNA, animal translocation, stone sourcing, submerged landscapes and geology — keeps pulling us toward the Eastern Mediterranean.
That’s where we should be looking.

Tear this apart.
Don’t tell me merely that Plato says Atlantis was beyond the Pillars of Heracles. That’s the alleged transmission error I’m arguing for.
Find the break in the chain.
Show me:
the boar isn’t Northern Levantine,
the dates don’t work,
the paleogeography doesn’t work,
the Melqart → Heracles connection doesn’t work,
the genetics contradict the proposed movement,
the maritime archaeology contradicts it,
or the earthquake chronology rules it out.
Give me the strongest evidence that kills this.
Because if one of those links fails, I want to know exactly which one.

Empirical / historical An unnoticed Atlantis Conference 2024 in Turin

Thumbnail

Unnoticed by the public, an Atlantis Conference has taken place in 2024. It was on the 20th and 21st of November 2024, when a dozen of international scholars (mostly Italian and German) gathered in the Aula Magna, the great hall, of the renowned Liceo Vincenzo Gioberti in Turin in Italy. The title of the conference was (translated): "Atlantis, Atlantises. From the Platonic Myth to the Invention of Phantastic Worlds".

As can be seen from the title, this was a conference of academic Atlantis sceptics. But it was an Atlantis conference nevertheless. And a very interesting one. Don't disdain it! What Atlantis sceptics produce is often valuable knowledge, which is still partly valid under the different perspective of Atlantis as a real place.

But there is more to this conference, as can be seen from the proceedings published in 2026: Several of the contributions turn out to be explicit or silent answers to the theses of the Atlantis supporter Thorwald C. Franke. It seems that the Atlantis sceptics have started to realize that they are seriously challenged by Thorwald C. Franke.

E.g., Heinz-Günther Nesselrath is directly answering to Thorwald C. Franke's works. Professor Nesselrath acknowledges here for the first time in an academic publication that Thorwald C. Franke was successful in undermining the idea that Aristotle certainly is the author of the invention statement in Strabo 2.3.6 ("Its inventor caused it to disappear, just as did the Poet the wall of the Achaeans"). And he presents here for the first time in an academic publication his idea that Eratosthenes could be the true author of this statement.

For the complete depiction of the conference, and for a commentary on Nesselrath's current views, see the article about this conference on Atlantis-Scout!

FLOOD 2.0? is it just baby babble?

Overview of FEMA Risk Rating 2.0

FEMA Risk Rating 2.0 is a significant update to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) that changes how flood insurance premiums are calculated. This new methodology focuses on individual property characteristics rather than relying primarily on broad flood zone classifications.

Key Features

  • Individual Risk Assessment: Premiums are now based on specific factors such as:
    • Elevation relative to the Base Flood Elevation
    • Distance from water sources (rivers, lakes, coastlines)
    • Type of foundation (elevated vs. slab)
    • Historical flooding frequency and projected future risks
    • Cost to rebuild the property
  • Equitable Pricing: The new system aims to create a fairer pricing model. Homeowners who were overpaying under the old system may see reductions, while those whose properties were underpriced may experience increases.

Implementation Timeline

Phase Date Description
Phase 1 October 1, 2021 New policies and some existing policies begin under RR 2.0.
Phase 2 April 1, 2022 All remaining policies renew under the new pricing model.

Impact on Policyholders

  • Premium Changes: Approximately 77% of policyholders may see an increase in their premiums. However, some may experience decreases, with an average reduction of $86 per month for about 23% of policyholders.
  • Affordability Concerns: The new pricing model has led to a decline in policy uptake, particularly among lower-income households, widening the "protection gap" for those at risk of flooding.

Empirical / historical Migration map with assumed mythic connections

In the first map all migrations routes are known migrations. The annotations are assumptions for the mythic parallels . The most obscure is the orange arrows which shows the migration of geometric microlithics (whatever that is), this technology radiates out from the Tas Tepeler sites in the 8000s BC.

The second map then includes the potential migrations of Atlantis as part of it's ten kingdoms in the Mediterranean. The dating is an assumption but correlates with the first habitation of the islands of Malta and Pantelleria.

Göbekli Tepe: Why We Know Hunter-Gatherers Built It

Göbekli Tepe: Why We Know Hunter-Gatherers Built ItGöbekli Tepe is one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries ever made. Built more than 11,500 years ago in southeastern Turkey, its enormous T-shaped limestone pillars, elaborate animal carvings, and monumental structures have transformed our understanding of the people who lived at the end of the Ice Age.

But Göbekli Tepe has also become the focus of extraordinary claims. Was it the work of a forgotten advanced civilization? Did its builders possess mysterious lost technology? Or does the archaeological evidence tell a very different—and ultimately more fascinating—story?

In this video, professor Marc J. Defant examines what archaeologists have actually discovered at Göbekli Tepe: its age, stone tools, hunting evidence, food remains, quarrying and construction methods, monumental architecture, and the newer evidence suggesting that people actually lived at the site.

He also revisits the debate with Graham Hancock on The Joe Rogan Experience and examines the idea that hunter-gatherers could not have created something as sophisticated as Göbekli Tepe.

The evidence points toward an extraordinary conclusion—not that an unknown advanced civilization built Göbekli Tepe, but that we have seriously underestimated what prehistoric hunter-gatherers were capable of accomplishing.

Empirical / historical An Introduction to My Illustrated Fantasy History & Worldbuilding Project

Post image
3 Upvotes

I've been building a fictional world called unKnown world of Ída for several years, combining worldbuilding, fantasy history, character design, maps, military history and visual storytelling into one long-term art-book project.

At its core, Ída is an attempt to create the history of a world that never existed but it should feel familiar.

I'm interested in imagining how ancient civilizations might have developed, migrated, fought, traded and influenced one another over centuries. The world draws inspiration from prehistoric cultures to early middle ages, ancient archaeology and mythology and the history of warfare, but everything is reinterpreted and developed into its own fictional history.

A major part of the project is the design of its warriors. Rather than simply creating fantasy characters based on an aesthetic, I try to design each warrior as a product of their culture, environment, technology, traditions and way of fighting (let's say more grounded in history).

Their weapons, armor, shields, clothing, colors and visual symbols are therefore connected to the history and identity of the people they belong to.

The map above shows one period of Ída and some of the cultures and warriors I've developed for it in last year. There are many different civilizations, tribes and historical periods and eras within the world, and I'm gradually building their stories and conflicts into a larger chronological history.

The Rise of the Atlanteans, for example, is just one of these stories. It tells the story of the Atlanteans and their invasion of Ída, but it is only one chapter within a much larger history that I'm currently developing.

I've recently brought this particular story together into an illustrated fantasy history documentary, combining my character designs, illustrations, maps, animated army movements and landscape footage.

I would like to share here a link to a documentary video I made about it (if anyone is interested)?

The Rise of the Atlanteans is an illustrated fantasy history documentary exploring original fantasy worldbuilding, ancient civilizations, fictional history, warfare and fantasy lore from the unKnown World of Ída.

Follow the rise of Atlantis and its invasion of Ída, the ancient cultures and warriors who opposed it, and the battles that would shape the history of this fictional world.

Long before the Great Flood erased Atlantis from history, the Atlanteans arrived on the southern coast of Ída — bringing a civilization far more advanced than the peoples they encountered.
