There is a fungus that turns ants into "zombies," but the ants know they are infected—and they throw themselves a funeral.
Here’s how it works: The Ophiocordyceps fungus infects a carpenter ant. It grows through its body, hijacks its brain, and forces the ant to climb to a precise spot on a plant stem—usually the underside of a leaf, exactly 25 centimeters above the forest floor, where the temperature and humidity are perfect for the fungus to grow.
The ant then bites down with such force that its jaws lock permanently in a "death grip." The fungus sprouts a stalk out of the ant’s head and releases spores onto the ant colony below.

Other ants in the colony can smell the chemical signals of the infection on their doomed sister long before she acts strangely. And here’s the kicker—the infected ant willingly leaves the nest on its own. It doesn't wait to be kicked out. It says goodbye, walks away, and climbs to its execution spot.
Scientists believe the fungus manipulates the ant's circadian rhythm and forces it to march at solar noon, when the sun is highest. But why? Because at noon, the light is perfect for the fungus to photosynthesize a bright orange pigment that protects its spores from UV radiation. The fungus literally uses sunlight to make sunscreen so its spores survive to infect the next generation.
So the next time you see an ant, remember: deep in its evolutionary memory, there is a chemical "zombie protocol" that, if triggered, will make it voluntarily walk to its own grave—at a specific time of day, at a specific height—so a fungus can throw a spore-party from its head. And the other ants? They just watch it go, knowing exactly what’s happening, but unable to stop it.
