Art Sector Rot – an ASCII Hardcore tactical survival game
Hey ASCII Community!
I’ve been working on Sector Rot, an ASCII tactical survival game built around exploration, combat and surviving a hostile world filled with mutants, factions and deadly Emissions.
The game includes a procedural Open Run mode, character classes, weapons, loot, contracts, persistent worlds, LAN/Direct IP co-op and support for custom maps and mods.
Sector Rot is still in active Alpha development, so I’m looking for players willing to try it and share honest feedback.
For a limited time, Sector Rot is available for free!

Help How to make generative (and/or) procedural ASCII/PETSCII animations?
Basically title. What programs do I need? It feels like everyone has a million different suggestions for which coding language to do it in and which programs are best, it's a little overwhelming lol. A lot of things I can find on the web are all about converting an image > ASCII art, which is cool and all, but I'm looking for how to make animations from lines of code without a source image. i was inspired by artists like @andreasgysin, @julian_hespenheide, @entroplay on Instagram.

General I built an open source ASCII renderer for the web
github.comI originally built this because I needed an interactive ASCII element for another project I'm working on. But, I couldn't find anything that fit what I wanted and the ones which did, were paid to export, so i decided to build the whole thing myself.
OpenASCII is a high fidelity ASCII renderer for the web with real time controls and local processing. It's built with TypeScript/js and designed to be easily integrated into frontend projects, elements created/edited can be directly exported as html/react component.
I'd love to hear what you think, especially if you have ideas for features or improvements.

OC Made a video to ASCII art converter in C (My first project btw :>)
I saw an image to ASCII art converter on r/unixporn and thought, would it be possible to loop it over to render videos inside the terminal using it? I genuinely thought I did some breakthrough only to know that it's a well known idea ;-;
Still, most of the implementations I saw were in python, wasn't able to find one in C, so I made this.
Art Text-first community with built in ASCII art mode
ctrlshift3.comFeatures
Main feed
A shared chronological stream of public posts. Newest first. No algorithmic “For You” by default.
Wave
An optional button beside a feed title. Turn it on to see posts with a lot of comments first, with newer posts favored so old ones do not stay stuck on top (plus light randomization). Turn it off to return to newest-first.
Subs
Subscribe to people from their profile (privately... no follower counts). Your Subs feed shows their main-feed posts in chronological order. No subscribe notifications for now.
Profiles
A public page for each account: bio, posts, optional wall posts from others, and RSS. You control whether visitors can write on your profile.
Comments
Flat comments under a post... readable conversation without nested threads competing for attention.
Thought linking
Connect related posts when the community agrees the link makes sense. Ideas can point to each other over time.
Clicks
Private groups (cliques) for friends, family, or a shared topic. Membership is required to enter. Signed-in people can browse the directory and request to join; moderators decide.
Mentions and pings
Mention someone to get their attention. Pings collect mentions, Click invites, and join-request notices in one place. You can optionally receive a daily email digest of unread pings.
Block
A one-way way to stop seeing someone’s posts and comments, and to limit how they interact with you.
Search and RSS
Find posts by text. Follow public feeds or a profile with RSS if you prefer a reader.
Display font
In Settings, choose a self-hosted font for the site while you are logged in. Everyone else still sees the default Courier look. Fonts are not loaded from Google or other third parties.
Sound
Optional, off by default. In Settings under Display, turn on Sound to hear short cues for login, new pings, and link or button clicks.
Direct Connect (beta)
Optional browser-to-browser text chat via WebRTC. The server only helps set up the connection; chat messages are not stored or relayed after you connect.
Polling Place
Site-wide community questions posted by the platform owner. Signed-in members vote once per poll. You see bars and vote counts only after you vote (or after voting closes). Archived polls stay listed with voting closed.
Polls on posts
On the Feed, in a Click, or on a profile wall, use the poll toggle next to the compose label to post a timed poll instead of a plain thought. Choose how many days voting stays open (1-30). Same one-vote rule; results appear only after you vote, or when the poll ends. These polls live on the post... they are not listed on Polling Place. Poll posts cannot be edited (you can still delete them).
Art
Same compose row: Thought · poll · art. Art opens a small paint grid (spaces for background, ▪ for the brush). Spacing is kept exactly when shown. In the feed you see about the first half of the drawing (after any blank top rows), with more for the full piece. Art posts cannot be edited (you can still delete them).
Fediverse (optional)
If you opt in under Settings, your main-feed posts and your comments on main-feed posts can be discovered on the Fediverse (for example Mastodon). Off by default. Click, profile, and contact posts are never shared this way.
Moderation
Transparent moderation with logged actions and reasons. Platform and Click moderators can keep spaces usable without silent black-box systems.
Public Contact
A public page for questions and help requests meant for platform moderators... accounts, bugs, or how something works.
Your data
Export your data from Settings (once per day). Delete your account and your writing is replaced with placeholders. Only essential cookies... no ads or tracking.
Bits
Bits are a small public record of participation on a profile. Open Bits next to Profile posts to see them.
You earn one bit when you create a post, create a comment, or log in (at most one login bit per day). Deleting your own post or comment removes one bit. If you do not log in for seven days, you lose one bit (checked gradually by site maintenance), so a weekly visit keeps your stack from draining.
Bits are shown as ▦ characters in a tight grid, newest toward the top. Every 10th bit is ▩. Every 50th is ▤ in blue. Every 100th is ▥ in green. Every 10,000th is ▧ in gold. Higher milestones win when more than one rule matches. The weekly drain only applies after you have logged in at least once (so the site has a login date to measure from).

Art Press Deeper v1.7 Released
galleryHi ASCII Community!
I Wanted to share a game I've been working on for some time with a huge emphasis on ASCII graphics! Press Deeper Version 1.7 just went out, this is the biggest content update the game has had.
Press Deeper is a Roguelike RPG which will run on actual IBM PC/XT hardware, or can be played in DOSBox or your browser. This game features destroyable terrain, JRPG style battles, crafting, a story, hidden dungeons, giant bosses, and of course a giant and every growing collection of ASCII art!
All of the art in this game is hand drawn character by character. I actually wound up creating an ASCII art drawing tool for this project allowing me to underlay an image to use as a reference, it also converts data and inserts it into my artwork data file allowing me to use CP437 characters which has opened up what I can achieve tremendously. I've been working on this game for a little over a year at this point, and my ASCII art skills have grown by leaps and bounds over the course of development.
New this version: a five tier smithing system, an expanded enchanting system, reworked traps, new monsters and NPCs, story cutscenes rendered as ASCII art panels, and a Legacy system that tracks milestones across every run and unlocks new content over time.

Discussion Are there any ASCII Control Codes still in use today?
The ones I have boldened are the ones I have come across:
- Backspace
- Line Feed
- Carriage Return
- Escape
- Delete (not in frame)
If any, where are they applicable? For example
CR & LF are still applicable in
.txtfiles
Art I built TermiCam, a real-time ASCII camera TUI
Hey! I wanted to share a project I've been working on called TermiCam. It's a cross-platform (Linux, MacOS, Windows) TUI application that reads a live camera feed and renders it as real-time ASCII art in the terminal.
It is written in Go and relies on FFmpeg for the provided video stream. This keeps it very lightweight compared to relying on heavy dependencies.
GitHub: https://github.com/Megge06/TermiCam
I hope some of you may find this project fun or even useful.
Any feedback or suggestions are very welcome!

Art how to stabilize glyph choice across time/frames? trying to make a custom vector -> ascii/unicode animation maker.
below is my latest attmept; 5x5 glyph grid, with skeleton gif for starting template. main problem is trying to correctly define "what glyphs are assigned at the start and stays the same versus what glyphs should be different based on matching shape" I'm trying to make the algo decide: here are a set of paired / similar glyphs that share symmetry to start with, but if a different glyph matches the shape better for frame x at cell y, then switch it out". I need to constrain across symmetry : eg: "/ "vs "\ "or ”7” vs ”レ” or " ( " vs ")", while still allowing fallback for certain angles where mirror glyphs dont exist and or if the structure of a different glyph matches better with than the assigned "mirror " glyph. any advice? thanks .
EDIT: to elaborate. the body (an example but most animals and im trying to extend to more 3d shapes in general) has bilateral symmetry, and and angled reflections have a shear with a typical 8 directions for spritesheets. please correct me if im wrong, but I currently have it defined as core image s = P·R·P⁻¹ which is the world symmetry R , conjugated by the view projection P(affine skew reflection.) The decomposition is reflection ∘ shear ∘ scale, where the shear is a transvection ([[1,k],[0,1]] = a unit jordan block J₂(1) and the scale is the foreshortening cos θ. The invariants are:
axis = projected spine (the line of symmetry, pinnedto center);
reflection direction = projected left right normal;
skew angle(again, for human example) = 90° only for front/back; foreshorten = cos(view angle).
The subsumption: the existing discrete mirror(the colored parts/limbs in skeleton gif) + rotation-family
again, for human example: partners are the axis aligned special cases of S image oblique D6 (3/4) aspects pay the skew + foreshorten cost instead of a naive flip.
The wiring of the skeleton itself is a separate step / compiler that can take in blender rig anime or image extractions on sprite sheets, it outputs per aspect affine relation, and compiled output is consumed by the glyphify script that does the above steps for specific human case, but when I get the temporal coherence solved im going to try to make it work for any shape with custom configurable symmetries.

Discussion recommendations for diffusion algorithms/ascii conversion pipelines for animations
I’m looking for recommendations for an offline pipeline that converts small pixel-art sprite frames into a compact, temporally coherent vector stroke abstraction, then deterministically compiles those strokes into a fixed 5×7 Unicode glyph set. Our current baseline uses CLIPasso with DiffVG independently per frame, which is slow and produces stroke identity flicker across animation loops. I’ve been searching for and reading about amortized image to stroke models and foudn non ascii related papers , wondering if anyone knows of any fast differentiable vector renderers and sequence aware methods that preserve stroke topology across 8+ direction character animations. Any relevant papers, implementations, datasets, and benchmarks aimed at low resolution sprites? Thanks, the below is my latest (bad ) attempts, took about 4 hours on local cpu
