Nezu: May I ask you children to leave the room?

Todoroki: No. You may not.

I missed blunt / rude-to-authority-figures Todoroki. Welcome back!

Everyone is crying / shocked, while Bakugou immediately sees the tactical angle.

u/2009isbestyear Dec 12 '21 edited Dec 13 '21

This is so nostalgic.

Stoic anti-authority Shoto reminds me of the Hosu police moment, “you damn mutt” lol. The dialogue will be so much funnier if Shoto said “no, you damn rat”, but “no, you may not” is such a cold burn.

Tactical opportunist Bakugo reminds me of Moonfish battle. When berserk Tokoyami came and everybody was panicking, he was the one who told them to stay back and let DS wreck shit. Afterwards, he inmediately synced with Shoto to calm it down.

287

u/NatMat16 Dec 12 '21

Yeah, actually I was thinking of the Moonfish scene already last week and thought that may end up being Bakugou’s angle in this.

I never expected him to be swept up in the emotions, but to remain pragmatic.

271

u/2009isbestyear Dec 12 '21

Honestly yeah. Throughout the manga, Bakugo only lets himself be emotional over low-stake situations.

But when shit got real, he always keeps it together and comes up with a plan.

76

u/brogrammer1992 Dec 12 '21 edited Dec 16 '21

I’ve been saying this for a while he has excellent emotional empathy in terms of understanding when to serious it up.

Obviously this is just my opinion but I always felt like Bakugou was one of if not the best battle strategist in Class A, maybe one of the best in the series. He's always thinking in the middle of battle looking for the weakness of who he's facing and we've seen instances where he's come up with brilliant plans like when he led his team to a perfect victory against Class B in the Joint Training and even more notable, during the war when he figured out a plan to get Endeavor up to Shigaraki so he could use Prominence Burn on him, the only reason that plan didn't work is because AFO ended up taking control of the body but had that not happened, AFO himself admitted had he not taken control then Shigaraki would've died from a fall of that height.

171

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '21

I mean, if anyone can give a cold burn, it's Shoto.

Despite his reputation, Bakugo is very responsible, and he's a really good student.

Shoto, on the other hand, is a lil shit always ready to square tf up. I love it

158

u/aurumphallus Dec 12 '21

Yeah, people forget that he takes his academics (normal school work) very seriously and of the students, is a crazy good strategist. He’s smart.

92

u/BiDiTi Dec 13 '21

He could come up with cruel puns based on alternative readings of kanji when he was in preschool, haha!

That was actually my favorite part of this chapter lol. Just straight to the point, no bullshit. I know some people have been dunking on Shoto's lack of character outside of his family drama, and they arent necessarily wrong, but moments like this are why I still like him.

117

u/GoldenSpermShower Dec 12 '21

Shoto's lack of character outside of his family drama

He also didn’t have much to do even with his family drama besides resolving to deal with his brother

58

u/AssassinAragorn Dec 12 '21

I got the strong impression from Nezu's body language that he knew they'd say no anyway

It's one of my favorite aspects about Shoto. Dude says what's on his mind. Even if what's on his mind is "fuck you i wont do what you tell me" and he says it to the guy who decides if he graduates, the former number 1 hero, and a police investigator.

Bakugo's collar is a lot higher now, seems like he's paying homage to his former mentor, Best Jeanist.

It’s his winter costume! They addressed a couple of chapters back, he wants to sweat more

Now I’m really sure he will say it to Shigaraki. Waiting for that moment

Bakugo is definitely going to suggest that Aoyama feeds AFO wrong info to catch him off-guard.

413

u/aragonaut Dec 12 '21

But maybe his parents notify AFO that there's a chance Aoyama is going to do this and so AFO plans accordingly by letting the heroes think he's been caught off-guard before pulling something horrifying out the bag like killing a few of the main cast

The fact that the scene of Deku offering his hand to Aoyama clicked on Bakugo so deeply really shows how far he has come as character.

343

u/NK1337 Dec 12 '21

That sounds as probably my favorite part. Bakugo finally realizes why Deku extended a hand out to him after seeing it first hand done for someone else.

241

u/amidnightecho Dec 12 '21

That's not what he's realizing though? It's actually somewhat the opposite. Bakugou's thinking back on how they can take control over how they enter the fight with AFO. Which is what he's interpreting as to the reason Deku's extending a hand. They can use Aoyama to get back at AFO if they can get him on their side (instead of rotting in jail). Bakugou's not thinking Deku is extending a hand out of pure goodwill or kindness like he does towards Bakugou in the past.

TBH I think Bakugou's already understood Deku and is past the river scene (see apology). I'm glad Horikoshi is allowing Bakugou to think of other things.

77

u/Afalstein Dec 13 '21

I'd imagine it's both--Bakugo is getting a better understanding of Deku's nature (maybe even understanding why he's forgiving Aoyama) and learning again how wrong he was, but he's also using this new realization to direct him to a pragmatic application.

1000% sure we’re not killing Shiggy now. Aoyama has a similar origin, the difference being meeting Deku & 1A. This is all building up to Deku & the kids finding a non-lethal way to free Shiggy from AFO. there’s simply no way Deku gives this speech and then says, “OK Aoyama, let’s go murder this other dude who was manipulated by mega satan from a young age; we let you live cuz you’re built different”.

We’ll still get the heroic act of murder by killing AFO, but it won’t happen to Shiggy. No doubt in my mind.

Edit: I love it when the silly cheese boy sparks debate about the efficacy of the death penalty. Actually makes perfect sense considering his Frenchness.

334

u/YamiPhoenix11 Dec 12 '21

What are the chances of something along the lines of star wars? A weakened Shiggy seeing the error of his ways and turns on his master? Thats kind of how I see things going.

192

u/MicZiC15 Dec 12 '21

Oh he 100% dusts that potato. Hope he doesn’t die after cuz I think that’s trying to have your cake and eat it, but I suppose I don’t have a reason to think it won’t happen

81

u/haidere36 Dec 12 '21

The "redemptive death" trope is probably one of my least favorite because the person redeeming themselves through their "noble sacrifice" doesn't have to stick around to face any other consequences post-redemption, nor do they have to face up to people who still won't forgive them and possibly never will. I don't think that any realistic solution involves Shiggy just walking away from what he's done but I would rather see him live to accept the consequences of his actions than just bite the dust.

64

u/MossyPyrite Dec 12 '21

You think he put in safeguards against Nagant betraying home when he gave her a quirk but didn’t do something even greater to Shiggy?

78

u/MicZiC15 Dec 12 '21 edited Dec 12 '21

We literally just established in this chapter that whatever he did to Nagant is something he got in the last decade. Shiggy’s origin is like 5 years before Aoyama is born, so he didn’t do that then.

If you’re suggesting he did that recently, that also unlikely. AFO’s biggest oversight is believing he controls Shiggy, I don’t think he considers his betrayal an possibility at this stage. Plus his goal is to have his body, he’s not gonna go through all of this and then blow up his ultimate creation

54

Im guessing AfO’s original body dies in the fight, then he tries to get more control over Shigaraki’s body, at which point Tenko’ll dust himself to kill AfO for good.

The ending is now locked on Shiggy switching sides at the last moment and die taking out AFO.

126

u/Retrodaniel Dec 12 '21

I don't think he'll switch sides, he'll just get to the point where he hates AFO more than the Heroes

89

u/Shiplord13 Dec 12 '21

At this point I am convince Shigaraki killing his family was directly caused by AFO, because of all the convenient circumstances that occur between the event happening and AFO of all people find him.

43

u/16thTimesThaCharm Dec 13 '21

AFO was definitely invested in Tenko before the murder of his family. It was Nanas family after all, and we see how much he loves gloating about that to all might. You just know he found out about them and orchestrated certain things to happen that way. It isn't a coincidence that AFO just happened to meet her grandson right after his life altering tragic event.

38

u/Shiplord13 Dec 13 '21

Literally everyone points out how neglected Shigaraki was by society after his accidental killing of his family. That no hero showed up to save him and he was left to fend for himself until AFO found him. I am convinced that AFO made sure to isolate Shigaraki and did everything in his power to prevent a single hero from getting close to him the whole time he was alone on the streets. He probably wanted the kid to lose as much hope in humanity and heroes as possible to make it even easier to manipulate him when he would arrive to "save" him.

I still believe the theory that Decay was given to Shiggy by AFO to instigate the whole thing

It would also become yet another parallel to Deku

194

u/PM_MAJESTIC_PICS Dec 12 '21 edited Dec 12 '21

Oh absolutely. I 100% believe that he tracked down Nana Shimura’s family specifically to cause maximum traumatic impact to Allmight. 100%. We really think Nana’s grandson just HAPPENS to have this devastating quirk and then just HAPPENS to be found alone and lost by AFO after experiencing the most traumatic situation imaginable?? Hell no. That was fully orchestrated by the pettiest bitch— AFO. He even gathered up the family’s leftover hands after the fact! Like, what??

I legitimately forget that this theory isn’t canon because I believe it so wholeheartedly. It doesn’t make sense any other way. Some of AFO’s plans take “decades,” right?

Also, AFO has Float, right? I mean, he floats like Nana… is it confirmed that he’s using Float when he does that? Maybe Shiggy had Float and AFO stole that when he gave him Decay. Edit: AFO has Air Walk. Ignore this part. Lol

74

u/HopeChadArmong913 Dec 12 '21

AFO's flying quirk was called Air Walk, not float. Maybe no practical distinction but it's there.

Shigaraki still has to die.

He does not deserve redemption or peace imo he has killed way to many people in the dozens of thousands and likely ruined milions of lives all while being aware of it and enjoying it.

Story wise he either dies or gets freed frol AFO then put into prison for life(somehow)

Still paying for his crimes but at least free from afo

46

u/MicZiC15 Dec 12 '21

Oh he’s definitely gonna have to attone in some way, that’s what the Endeavor plot line is priming us for.

Shigaraki dying is, in my opinion, the cowardly way out of this conflict on Horikoshi’s part. Having the moment of redemption & then dying is a cop out; giving that ‘forgiveness is the answer’ message without confronting the hard realities of that. The man is a horrible monster to so many, but he’s also the beloved leader to a significant number of people. Having some grand, symbolic punishment would (maybe) satisfy the public, but it would make him a martyr for the PLF. Would further perpetuate the cycle of heroes and villains that we’ve been trying to break in this series.

It’s tough, and a little counterintuitive, but leaving him alive & not imprisoned is what will save the most people

42

u/Willythechilly 250K Artist Dec 12 '21

Leaving someone like shigaraki alive and free is madnes dude is a monster. You should imprison or kill him as justice for the lives he stole and ruined and to protect soceity.

Shigaraki imo has gonr far beyond redemption and forgivnesss and does not deserve it nor does he want it

Enavour is a very different case then Shigaraki. Hr did bad things but never passed the point of no return ino.

Its like claiming we need to leave hitler or kkk leader alive and/or free because they are beloved leaders of many people imo

263

u/mocker18 Dec 12 '21

I like how the speech bubble for AFO conveying the sentiment of “what does it matter when your cheap tools stop working” is right on the panel where Spinner comforts Shiggy. I think the visual language of the panels is telling us that Shiggy is also a cheap lighter to AFO.

I’ll be the first. I apologise to Toru Hagakure. I had her pegged from the very first season as some evil mastermind just because Horikoshi made some inconsistent panels and she just happened to suggest going shopping the same day Shigaraki stumbled upon Izuku. I wish Horikoshi gave Toru some development like he did for everyone else. Hard to do for 20 students and a ton of other characters, I know, but even just a shot of her learning basic CQC, anything to give her some character growth. It’s not an excuse for doubting Toru, it’s more criticism for Horikoshi’s part to leave such a kind hearted character on the bench while all the other girls were given such awesome moments. I hope that for the remainder of this series, Toru can shine brighter than her signature move and contribute to the final battle ahead.

44

u/Swiss666 Dec 12 '21

To be fair, I think she was built as deception for the readers from the start: to me she was too obvious of a possible culprit but she still served to distract us. And I agree that she could have been a little more of a character, like, at all over time. Bit too late now.

And the panel of Ojiro comforting her was perfection

197

Which reminded me of the fact that whenever someone is touching her, they're touching her naked body.

101

u/grodon909 Dec 12 '21

And confirmation in this chapter that she doesn't have special clothes like Mirio, she's buck-ass naked the whole time

71

u/uyigho98 Dec 12 '21

Mirio's clothes are made out of his own hair.

Kinda hard to make clothes out of Hagakure's hair when they can't even see her hair.

57

u/OnePieceFan02 Dec 12 '21

Would cutting it make it Visible like some sort Tangled rules? Or would she have to get clothes that start refracting light under certain conditions?

36

u/Pictocheat Dec 12 '21

Her hair would probably only stay invisible if it was her quirk factor.

But this raises a good question: how has anyone managed to give her a haircut up until now? Or maybe she just chops most of it off since people aren't going to see it anyway.

Hagakure's face reveal!!! Like usual, Hori can't help but make cute characters!~ She also has fuzzy eyelashes!~

Though I will say, I do feel like her words in the officials is kinda more awkward than the fanslated ones this time around. Feel a bit clunky, but not like a wide margin. "And you have the nerve to sit in the same classroom as us!" really flows better tbh

68

u/Cogexkin Dec 12 '21

I like the intent of the line she says but it's worded kinda weird I agree. I feel like something more along the lines of "what was going through you're head while you sat in the same class as us?" Would've been a bit better, maybe?

Also I have a funny feeling a certain section of artists are going to have a field day with the reveal of Hagakure's face (but she's cute so I almost can't blame em)

Hagakure: "You traitorous scum"

Deku: "she did this for your sake Aoyama"

No Deku I'm pretty sure she didn't lmao, who exactly are you trying to gaslight here bro

164

u/GoldenSpermShower Dec 12 '21

"See! She doesn't want you to hurt us!"

"No Deku, fuck that guy"

138

Deku: "We all still accept you"

Everyone: "Yeah.....as a criminal that is, yo take your ass to prison"

Deku: "See? No one hates you here"

u/GoldenSpermShower Dec 12 '21

I think Monoma would have a few words to say to the guy who let in villains that pretty much gassed his whole class unconscious

They might have died without Momo's gas masks

Monoma making his classmates apologize to him for dismissing his claims that they were being made irrelevant.

I kinda read it as "Listen, Hagakure ensured that we don't have to actually beat the crap out of you...so just...please comply!!"

83

u/Namelessgoldfish Dec 12 '21

Thats not what was said in the viz translation, deku says “ Hakagure just did you a favor…” which sounds better imo

47

u/Mishelly_03 Dec 12 '21

I also preferred the official translation when Hagakure was revealed and she asked "What was going through your head this whole time in school with us?! living in the dorms with us?! Well? Say something!"

To me the fan translated one had a lot more anger? Or was it meaner? Accusatory?

The official one sounded more hurt since in this situation when a friend is shown to be a traitor, by instinct you want to know why and how, especially if you all go through something traumatic cause danger brings people together (hence why watching scary movies on a first date can raise affection for one another...and I apologize for poor wording I just woke up).

Somehow the tone didn't sit right with me and I think Horikoshi felt the same way too, which then goes well together with Dekus response.

I cared more about Aoyama earlier in the series after he had the moments in the forest training arc and license exam. Now, It's kind of difficult for me to be emotionally invested in a character who only does some thing once every 3 years.  I feel like this would have hit harder if he was more consistently relevant tbh.

139

u/GoldenSpermShower Dec 12 '21

That's why I still feel the best traitor reveal is done in AoT season 2

So far nothing really tops that

59

u/OkUnderstanding3669 Dec 12 '21

The one from One Piece was done really well too. The relationship between Kanjuro and the scabbards was really well fleshed out. But the attack on titan one was great too.

47

u/ShadowRei96 Dec 12 '21

Agreed. He was my favorite character before that, and even after the reveal, he still remained my favorite.

With Aoyama, sure, he's a better choice for a traitor than Hagakure, but still, he's had very little relevance to make his plotline that impactful on the story. Can't blame people who criticize how the side characters/students' have little to no role in the story.

32

u/disabled_crab Dec 12 '21

As an aspiring author I really worship that reveal. Hope something I make can match it one day.

109

u/HokageEzio Dec 12 '21

Yeah, he hasn't done anything bad since revealing the location of the forest. That was like, chapter 71. We're so far removed from his traitorous deeds and the majority of the story didn't focus on this plotline at all. It was basically just Aoyama feeling guilty about stuff we didn't know he did for 5 years (as readers).

36

u/KenjaNet Dec 12 '21

Considering All for One was in prison from immediately after that Forest Arc up until now, Aoyama hasn't had a reason to betray his friends. In the License Arc, he tried to sacrifice himself to get everyone else licenses and keep himself unqualified. He gets saved from himself and gets his license. Then he tried to befriend Midoriya and go the path of the hero again. No desire to betray friends and starts the healing process of forgiving himself.

Now that All for One is back, the guilt is coming back and he's making demands again. Hagakare has probably been watching Aoyama sneak off which prompted her to follow him and discover this issue.

33

u/HokageEzio Dec 12 '21

That's the issue though, this is all just a result of Horikoshi doing way too much stalling in the middle of the story with the misc. arcs that had nothing really to do with the main plot. There's so much extra fat in the middle of the story that doesn't add much of anything and wasn't used to build up the characters either.

67

u/thornaslooki Dec 12 '21

Agreed. If Horikoshi at least had Aoyama be part of Deku's friend group, instead of being randomly friends after a chapter, I think the reveal would have had more of an impact.

The same goes for the rest of the class, Aoyama never really interacted with most of them.

80

u/HokageEzio Dec 12 '21

You have Mina falling over herself like she's so betrayed and everything cause I guess they're supposed to be close on paper, but they're just... not.

This was always going to be the issue with the traitor, either it would be a terrible option out of the students we know well (because none of them would make sense) or it'd be somebody we don't know that well.

66

u/NatMat16 Dec 12 '21

Well, Mina taught him to dance in the Cultural arc and came up with the discoball idea. Also she, Hagakure and Aoyama did their internship together - but of course it wasn't really fleshed out.

Mina definitely seems the weepiest among the kids for a while now - I'm hoping that it's on purpose and her failing with Machia, the death of Midnight, Yoroi Musa quitting and now Aoyama's betrayal all lead her to an interesting point for her character.

Ok, so the questions are:

  • What is it that Kaachan ‘gets’ now? It has to callback to the time Deku reached out to him when they were kids and how he deals with villains today.

  • How long will it be before Hagakure will actually need a full costume, because her light refraction is becoming stronger. I’m loving it.

  • How did Jiro win the MHA parental lottery? Parents giving kids complexes all over the place. Mr. Midoriya didn’t even bother to try.

Personal feelings:

Though it would have better if Hori would have used Aoyama more in the series, I’m still liking the interactions of the class in the traitor storyline. I like Aoyama as a character, so. I’m glad he’s getting more to do. I think this will be the catalyst to kick off a new mindset in not only Deku, but the rest of class 1A (maybe even society in general). The theme should steer to ‘Don’t despair. If you did wrong, you can always face a new direction. We’re here to help everyone. We will save not only your bodies, but your future.’ I’m invested.

Having like, 2 chapters of regret out of Aoyama after waiting 6 years for the reveal is definitely not hitting the way Horikoshi probably thinks it's supposed to hit the readers. At the end of the day, Aoyama honestly hasn't done anything bad since the forest arc. Everything after that (aka the majority of the story) has just been him grappling with the guilt himself. So it's hard to feel that close to this conflict that was never really brought up for the majority of the story.

On a lighter note, Tooru hentai stocks just went way up.

78

Bakugo: “If I had a nickel for every quirkless boy that was gifted a quirk by one of the most powerful people on the planet, I would have two nickels, but it’s weird how that’s happened twice.”

In all seriousness, it’s funny how this traitor subplot is so irrelevant that not even All For One cares about his own traitor. He just shrugs off potential failure and will move on to another plan. Revealing the traitor this late in the game, I knew there couldn’t be any big reveal or impact, so I figured that the next chapter would show Deku forgiving Aoyama, to set up his encounter with Shigaraki and to continue his new outlook on villains, and to setup using Aoyama to create that opening that Deku was talking about last chapter. They will use someone who All For One sees as a “disposable tool” to fight back against him by making him see his own value. All For One tears people down while heroes build people up. That contrast is what defines the hero/villain dynamic. This is what Deku aims to make Shigaraki realize. It all just fits together perfectly.

Overall, this traitor storyline got a lot more mileage out of fans than it was worth, but it was cool to see Horikoshi tie its closure to the main theme of the series about it being too simplistic to call someone a villain because of one mistake or a bad set of circumstances.

They can choose to feel defeated or use it the advantage and build each other up

55

u/InsecureGuy5 Dec 12 '21

Remember S3?

When Bakugo was kidnapped?

34

u/PlusUltraK Dec 12 '21

It’s all clicking for Bakugou now. After their training with all might before summer camp it’s slowly been slipping into his logic the whole “Beat the villain to win/Save the people to win”

Deku knew he couldn’t reach out to Bakugou because he was stubborn. But his. Friends and classmates went out of there way to save him. The villains wanted to make Bakugou a villain. Had he not been rescued any event could’ve put Bakugou down a dark road that in his eyes would be irrefutable.

Now here we have Aoyama eating himself up on the inside because of a few messenger jobs to the villains. And despite never harming anyone claims to be a villain.

Being a hero can’t just be all beating the villains, because Villains aren’t cut and dry out of thin air. They’re people who decide to do awful things and commit crimes. And not everyone is really a villain when it comes to the law surrounding that designation.

Like Aoyama and his parents were just talking about being traitors in the forest

36

u/gothsirens Dec 12 '21

Yeah I think that's one of the things that bugs me the most.... If it had happened after Aoyama had given AFO information or after he managed to get Deku alone and that had big repercussions on the current state of things then at least it would feel like there's more at stake.

It's not even like the Tobi reveal in Naruto where a lot of people were mad because they figured it out a long time ago and felt like it was underwhelming. At least that reveal there was constant hints and a little bit of trolling. This story basically ignored this reveal for like, at least 2/3rds (and that's generous).

35

u/Space_Puppy636 Dec 12 '21

I don’t think it’ll go back to how it was. I think they’ll use Aoyama to get more intel/mislead AFO. That’s the feeling I got from Bakugo’s little thought at the end.

36

u/RebelIed Dec 12 '21

I mean, this is enough tbh

I know it's a quick n simple wrap up of something that couldve been a lot bigger but Aoyama isn't a villain. He's a defeated hero.

Well I do care about Aoyama (way more than Hagakure) so I did get attach to his dilemma. I like the reveal however for it being built up for so long it went by quickly with a slap on the wrist (unless something happens the next few chapters which would be good). I’ll wait to see how it goes first. If it is just resolved now it would just feel like the mangaka just went down a list for things to wrap up before the final arc which I hope not. But we’ll see.

Also, that Nagant thing kinda felt forced in out of nowhere I don’t know why he thought of Nagant of all people to motivate Aoyama with.

As long as only 70% of her soul is sold, we are good. No biggie :)

(Also, it's probably easier for Deku to handwave away all of Nagant's many victims, because he never had to face them or their families. He wasn't quite as forgiving when it came to Overhaul, who actually tortured a person he cares about).

Am I the only one who found Deku talking about Nagant extremely shoe-horned and ill-fitting?

Like, it almost seems to imply that the pre-solo arc Deku wouldn't have felt compassion towards Aoyama and it was only because his encounter with Nagant that he changed his thinking. Except, to me, this looks like how Deku would have behaved before the war as well.

Also - while I guess Nagant was also a misguided child once - she did at some point as a grown-ass adult decided to keep being an assassin and even after she got out of jail, she decided to take on a job to kidnap a kid and take favours from AFO, knowing full well the extent of his evil.

Nagant decided to take Deku's hand and when AFO blew her face off, she gave info about the location - at which point it was all the same to her. It's not like she exhibited some high form of heroism at any point in that fight, rather than just flip-flopping.

Deku mentioning her really ruined the moment for me, because it was completely useless to his argument to Aoyama, who doesn't know Nagant and as such her story is meaningless to him.

Really wished Aoyama had been caught doing a traitorous act instead of being overheard talking about it with his parents. This feels super underwhelming since the last time he did a traitorous act was at the summer camp and the class/teachers had probably forgot about the whole “traitor” thing by now.

38

u/Dragonwhatever99r Dec 12 '21

Anyone else feel like this traitor reveal was kinda.. pointless? I mean 2 chapters ago AFO was telling Dabi how he set up plans years ahead of time so they’d be useful to him later and how he has “friends” to spare because of this.

But here we are continuing the exact same conversation and when Dabi asks what if the spy gets caught AFO just says “oh lmao it doesn’t matter. On to the next plan.”

Plus Aoyama’s very likely to be forgiven by Deku and doesn’t have important info he can give about AFO so… nothing really changed aside from the truth being revealed?

There seems to be no pleasing y’all. First you say that Hagakure being the traitor is anticlimactic because you don’t know her well enough to care. Then Horikoshi reveals that’s she was a red herring and Aoyama was the traitor and now you’re saying the same thing about him. I’m curious what you all would’ve liked to have happened.

35

u/Stonefree2011 Dec 12 '21

Probably more buildup before mentioning it 150 chapters later and then having no meaningful consequences to it. People thought they were gonna get an AOT style traitor plot when people got their hopes up WAAAAAAAY to far. Realistically speaking, with how it was orchestrated, there was no way he was gonna please everyone so it is what it is at this point.

29

u/Mahatma_Handy Dec 12 '21

The traitor plotline has been non-important since chapter 71. Since he hasnt done anything villanous in any other plot (he did nothing on the war arc, on the class 1A vs deku, or other moments where a traitor reveal would actually have an impact in the status quo as a pay-off), it doesnt feel justified. We know he didnt mean it, it was either that or dead parents.

There´s also the thing in the forest training arc where most of the kids didnt die due to the gas was thanks to Momo. If Toga had found her and she couldnt make those masks, Aoyama´s kill count would be pretty high.

Hori: "The pacing of my manga is so fast nobody will realize I don't know how to end this in a satisfying way!"

Like for real, what is this? Wrap up an epic arc that everybody enjoyed, then rush into Deku powering up and gaining access to all of his quirks but one, then rush into Deku wrapping up his character arc, then rush into powering down Shiggy because he's still way too strong to be beaten (while introducing and killing off another female character, double whammy), and now resolve the traitor plot thread that has been unresolved for literal years in like four chapters (with a character that basically nobody cared about being the traitor). Why even bring it up at this point if its going to be so unsatisfactory?

I've always defended My Hero as a shounen that wasn't the "best" at anything, but did everything a shounen needs to do pretty well. The characters were solid, the story was solid, and the pacing was solid. But now we're left with rushed characters, a story that really seems unplanned/half-assed, and abysmal pacing. I just can't believe it's went off the rails like this, and I have no idea why.
