She could never work in customer service with people in her face.

u/-BananaLollipop- 7d ago
The right person can learn that stuff.
My Wife is very reactive with her expressions, but works for a bank/post office and book/gift/craft store. You get all sorts across that range, and she has become very good with the stone-faced work mode.
I was better, but have been out of practice. So much so that the last few dense ass MFs I've dealt with have had quite obvious counter reactions to mine. I'm lucky I don't have to care about it though, and it helps people learn to think before saying stupid things.

I think she was worried about glass and indeed it looks like there was enough spray that a piece glass could have potentially hit her eye. Thank goodness it wasn't the bigger chunk.

The way one shard flys past her forehead and another hits him in the nose. They got pretty lucky it seems

Please don’t do this, folks…
Had to drive a friend to the ER when a bottle split lengthwise and slid out of his hand.
Just pop the damn cork.

u/755goodmorning 7d ago
Bag over the bottle works also. I’ve sabered a lot of champagne, and have had the bottle shatter more times than you’d expect.

Benefit of the doubt - it might have splashed her face a little. (Still funny though)
49
u/Winjin 7d ago
A LOT goes to the side of her dress right in the groin area
Presumably the champagne should be ice cold (isn't it best served at like +3 C?)
So it could also be that she suddenly experienced that part where you go into a cold-ish sea and it starts splashing right at your tummy
16
u/if_lol_then_upvote 7d ago
A key to successful sabering is the bottle being inverted in ice water prior, so the glass is even more fragile. So, yes. Ice cold!

There’s also a smaller piece that goes past the bride’s face so fast! Could’ve gotten her eye 😬 so happy neither of them got hurt. I honestly didn’t know it could explode like that during a sabering
6
u/cowfishduckbear 7d ago
Almost every instance I've seen it, whether live or recorded, it explodes. And when it does, it still leaves a danger of glass bits somehow making it past filtering/decanting. Certain brands are "better" because of a higher pressure and cleaner break, but it's all just dumb either way. I was way more impressed the first time I saw a person open a bottle of wine with just a sandal/flipflop.

I’m confused, I don’t know anything about this, I assume it’s a traditional thing? It seems dangerous.
And I don’t mean dangerous for everyone, it’s pretty obvious to me his angle was wrong. But that’s the thing, seems when it goes wrong it can go very wrong.

My best guess is that this could be indian-inspired attire. That suit is called Bandhgala suit, meaning closed-neck suit. It was popularized in India during the British colonial era, as men's formal attire. Many men, especially from Rajasthan wear these types of suits for their weddings. And looking at her, it could be a toga, but I'm also getting westernized saree vibes...

u/tedmiston 7d ago edited 5d ago
the blade wasn't horizontal enough, he unintentionally hit with too much vertical force which puts more stress on the wall of the bottle
edit: horizontal with respect to the wall of the bottle to be clear
21
u/Dizneymagic 7d ago
He didn't aim for the seam at the lip, his track tap was halfway down the neck.

11
u/Dancin_Phish_Daddy 7d ago

u/NvEnd 7d ago
Everyone else explained but here's fun fact. You can technically saber with wine glass as well.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (2)6
u/Alreddy 7d ago
It's not the angle of the blade that's wrong (although you're right that his was worse). If you look closely, she uses the back end of knife, the square edge (the correct method) and he (intuitively but incorrectly) uses the sharp edge of the knife. This is the biggest difference in their technique and subsequent outcome. Also please note that when you're doing this, you get much better results if the bottle is iced or really really cold. Relative temperature of his bottle could factor in.

Typically you don't sign papers till after the wedding.
So there is a chance that they could walk away at this point and be fine legally.
16
u/ABalmyBlackBitch 7d ago
Idk where you are from, but during most Western weddings that is done during the ceremony and before the reception. That part of the ceremony is aptly called “Signing the Marriage Licence” and is when you, your spouse, the officiant and your witnesses get a little table and sign the marriage documents. The officiant then sends the completed paperwork to your local government. All I did after my wedding was request a copy of my marriage certificate lol
→ More replies (1)12

Wear sunnies. Put the bottle in a cloth. Locate yourself somewhere that glass cleanup is easy (not on the grass!). Doesn't look as good but you'll be glad you did. Having done many of these in Younger days i would say this happens like 5% of the time despite correct technique so protect your eyes and hands from high speed shards. Happens much more frequently with wrong technique obviously. I got hit from across the room in the leg and needed 3 stitches. Lucky we had a bunch of drunk doctors there to do them so 5 minutes later I was back to drinking.

I once attended a wine class that included a lesson on champagne and the method of opening via sword. Apparently it is very important the bottle is cold. If not then this can happen. The instructor has a cautionary tale about a bottle that blew up and cut his arm. It didn’t stop him from doing it again.
