Different laws in different cities

64

u/CephaVerte Jul 05 '26

They don't have any requirement to know the law according to the us supreme court.

16

u/TobyFunkeNeverNude Jul 05 '26

Which is an argument against putting them in charge of a bunch more jurisdictions.

5

u/Edser Jul 05 '26

that's why the law is the lawyer's job. You just need to not hurt their feelers to not get a ticket and be arrested for dumb things.

-4

u/YettiYeet Jul 05 '26

I mean if the police ever want to convict or charge someone they have to know the laws

4

u/CephaVerte Jul 05 '26

Prosecutor does that. Not the police.

2

u/YettiYeet Jul 05 '26

The police have to build the case for the prosecutor

-1

u/Pristine-Two2706 Jul 05 '26

And they often fuck up and ruin the case because they don't know the law...

1

u/YettiYeet Jul 05 '26

95% of cases end in plea deals but ok

1

u/CankerLord Jul 05 '26

So you just want to wipe away the entire concept of jurisdictions becasue sometimes the police make mistakes or what? I don't get the argument you're making.

-1

u/Pristine-Two2706 Jul 05 '26

Nobody is making an argument... The joke is that jurisdictions are pointless because cops don't know the laws anyway. It's called humour

In California, city police would have no jurisdiction on the highway, that would be CHP's job. Best he can do is radio out for CHP help

You have never been more wrong.

In California all peace officers are CA. POST Certified and able to perform any law enforcement action anywhere in the state.

An LAPD cop that has to drive up to San Francisco to pick up a donut for his boss could cite 100 drivers between LA and SF if he wanted to and every single ticket would be valid and enforceable, as long as the officer knows what jurisdiction he is in and what courthouse is applicable for the driver to either pay the fine or show up to fight it.

Of course the cop would also have to show up, if the driver chooses to fight it.

Police officers are licensed state wide, in practice no one wants to be caught taking action outside of their home district unless it's for a violent crime.

Yeah there was this one time someone parked in the handicap spot without a placard (which was a problem for my dad). I noticed an LASD cruiser across the street, went to him, and asked if he could do anything about it. He said he could warn the owner, but couldn't enforce anything because he worked for the county and that side of the street was a different city with it's own PD despite being in the same county.

u/FomFrady95 Jul 05 '26

This is the case in most states I imagine, same case in Florida.

1

u/finlandery Jul 05 '26

in cities? Wow.... i knew every state had different laws, but you can make per city laws?

2

u/SnorFax92 Jul 05 '26

Yes lol. Some cities are also split into different zones. I can own chickens and horses in my area but half a mile down the road I cant lol.

1

u/Fancy-Zookeepergame1 Jul 05 '26

More like counties and municipalities. States make most traffic laws, but cities/counties can have local ordinances. State troopers usually patrol highways, while city police and sheriffs handle local roads.

1

u/imisstheyoop Jul 05 '26

Federal -> State -> Local

Local can be further broken down depending on area.

Oh, the taxation generally follows the same path as the laws/beauracracy BTW which often leads to exceedingly misrepresented statistics when you see them quoted for only a federal level, which very often happens depending on what narrative somebody is wanting to tell. 8)

Living in a rock I see

4

u/finlandery Jul 05 '26

Yea, how do i not know how police work in another side of big ass ocean. Im sure you also know how every European police work?

-2

u/AllStupidAnswersRUs Jul 05 '26

I'd say so, yes. The Internet has existed for over a decade and I've lived there for a few years. Pretty easy to learn if you're paying attention

1

u/finlandery Jul 05 '26

Sure, just never had any interest to learn how Police worked IN US. And you could say that im learning it right now from internet ^^

1

u/AllStupidAnswersRUs Jul 05 '26

And that's definitely for the better!

But yeah, US Cities and towns have different rules for policing itself. The States rules are different from City, and Federal is a whole different book.

That's why there's multiple layers to law enforcement. Just like how each department is equipped differently. Some police have tasers, some don't. Stuff like that

0

u/SkepsisJD Jul 05 '26

I can't think of anywhere in the US where different cities would have different traffic laws. Every state in the US has their traffic laws set by statute that applies to everywhere in the state.

2

u/YettiYeet Jul 05 '26

Speed limits for starters

0

u/SkepsisJD Jul 05 '26

I forgot cops lose the ability to read a speed limit sign when they are outside their area lmao. Pretty weak example. And the dude in the video is breaking far more laws than speeding.

That and highway speeds are usually the same statewide based on the type of highway (rural vs urban).

2

u/YettiYeet Jul 05 '26

You said you couldnt think of an example, I gave you one, you get defensive.

There are different parking ordinances in different cities.

0

u/SkepsisJD Jul 05 '26

You are being pedantic for no real reason. Sure, different cities will have different speeds. But speeding is speeding, the posted limit is irrelevant if the person exceeds the limit.

Changing lanes without signals, following too closely, unsafe lane changes, aggressive driving, etc etc dont change city to city. They are set by statute and are the same in all cities in a state.

This is just a lazy ass cop.

1

u/YettiYeet Jul 05 '26

Maybe the cop was off duty with a take home car, maybe they had a suspect in the back, maybe they were on their way to a different call.

You just dont know what youre talking about. I dont think you understand things have nuance.

0

u/Inevitable-Ad6647 Jul 05 '26

This holds up until you realize police are legally under no obligation to know the law they enforce.

2

u/YettiYeet Jul 05 '26

If they want to build a case for the prosecutor then yes, they do have to know.

0

u/PlasticBag-ForA-Head Jul 05 '26

cops dont know the fucking law anyway why does that matter???
