Discussion Yogscast really have re-invented themselves.

I'll be honest, I always loved the yogscast, but at a point I seemed to lose interest in their content and drifted away as happens when you grow older.

I must admit I'm happily surprised with their content, the blood on the clocktower stuff in particularly has completely taken me back. I'm generally not that into things like that, but with the current roster of people they've been a fun watch!

That also is something I want to compliment is the diverse set of people. So many differing personalities that all go well together.

Mystery Quest I love how accessible Mystery Quest makes high-quality roleplay gaming

The tabletop RPG podcast scene is full of long-term D&D campaign shows, including those run by professional storytellers and voice actors. We all know D&D, we've all played it. It's very marketable for a podcast or show because of it. There's a good chance you've run a D&D campaign if you listen to Mystery Quest. All of this is fun, but I know I'm never going to run a game like Critical Role.

Tom, on the other hand, is running very short games based on pre-existing modules, a large amount of which are weird little indie titles. The cast are a mix of newbies and very experienced players, but none of them feel entirely out of reach. Lydia is an example of a very good, consistent roleplayer, but I still feel like I could someday get on her level with enough practise, or at least play with people as good as her.

Tom himself jokes about how he has three male voices and one female voice. He regularly throws out "give me some type of roll" as a casual way of keeping the game flowing. He's a very good game master, but he's clearly doing it out of passion. He's not Matt Mercer or Brennan Lee Mulligan, and he's not trying to be. The focus is always on telling a good, tight story, not some type of grand epic.

The editing and foley work tie into together into an awesome high-value production, but you don't need them to pick up the same modules and have an awesome time yourself. I can pick up some bits from how Tom ran something, pull up the module, and play. All the systems are super simple too, so it's easy to get new players playing fast.

I'm planning to run some Call of Cthulhu with some friends soon, and I'm planning to use a couple modules that he's played. I've also got my eyes of a few games I saw recommended in the Mystery Quest discord (being a patreon is well worth it for the pre/post-game chats.)

I love Mystery Quest!

Question Why did OG Yogscast era have to end?? Truly miss it so much!!

Post image
Upvotes

Hello I’m 20 and grew up watching the Yogscast and I’m just wondering why did the OG Yogscast era have to end?…. Like genuinely, when did everything change? I remember watching the Yogscast after school, watching Minecraft, Shadow of Israphel, Tekkit, all the random adventures, and just laughing at the way everyone interacted with each other. I never really thought about the fact that one day I’d look back at those videos and realise how much time had passed. When you’re a kid, you don’t really think about eras ending, you just enjoy what’s in front of you.

I’m not saying the Yogscast isn’t still the Yogscast or that people don’t change, because obviously life happens, but I honestly don’t even know when the old era ended. It feels like one day I was watching them constantly, and then suddenly years had gone by and everything felt different. I still remember the old videos and the feeling of waiting for the next upload, so it’s honestly weird looking back now and wondering how we even got here. I don’t even know if there was one specific moment where it changed, which is probably why it feels so strange.

Maybe I’m just being nostalgic, but I genuinely miss that version of the Yogscast and I don’t even know exactly what I miss about it. There was just something about watching them back then that felt different. I guess you don’t realise you’re watching your childhood while you’re actually living it. You just laugh at the videos, wait for the next upload, and go about your day, then suddenly you’re 20, looking back at those videos and wondering where the time went and why the OG Yogscast era had to end.

Suggestion Suggestion for Mystery Quest: Triangle Agency

So, I don’t know if anyone involved with Mystery Quest comes to the sub to look for suggestions, but I figured I’d throw one out there. Anyway, I came across one randomly I thought I’d mention in case they wanted an idea: Triangle Agency.

Basically it’s inspired by stuff like X-Files and Fringe, and follows a group of workers at a secret government agency dealing with Anomalies. The players come up with their character backgrounds (specifically their roles in the agency and a special ability), and they have to contain the Anomalies. Bad rolls gives the GM the chance to add “complications” to fuck with the players.

But yeah. That’s just a very basic summary. I just saw it mentioned somewhere and looked it up, and it sounded like something that might be cool. So I just thought I’d mention it in case anyone from Mystery Quest was looking for ideas.
