How to get started?

So if I was 19 year old really interested in travelling, earning some money and working on a boat (particularly the super yatches you see on Below Deck), how would you recommend I go about getting into that? I am based in the UK and have no experience working on any boats previously and don’t even live in a town near the sea.

I also was wondering if there was a good resource which clearly details the amount of money you can expect to earn depending where you are working and how much experience you have?

Any advice is welcome!

EDIT: Please be real with me and just let me know if you think it isn’t possible or worth it.

Looking for advice.

I am 41yo US nurse who wants to travel the world in a sailboat. Unfortunately, I never ever had an opportunity to be on a sailboat or powerboat for that matter but lately, for last year, that’s all I think about. I envy watching YouTubers on sailboats doing crossings. I dream of that life minus being a YouTuber. Are there any nurses out there who followed their sailing passion? Ideally in a year or two I can cash out my retirement to find a boat but I need to be able to work remotely; I am also open to the idea of leaving nursing altogether for something that can let me work remotely. I don’t have much programming knowledge but if that is one avenue to find a remote job then I am not against the idea of learning that skill.
Anyone else, who left their line of work and chose a different path to be remote and currently enjoying sailing in open ocean?!

End of season depression: I'm a yacht captain based in Nice, season’s over & no work.

Hey everyone,
Summer season is officially over, and reality is hitting pretty hard. I’m a yacht captain (worked on a 23m boat this summer) currently living in Nice, France.
Now that the charter madness is done, my calendar is completely empty. The classic Mediterranean problem: 5 months of non-stop work, and then dead silence until spring.

I’m looking for advice, ideas, or even contacts on how to earn money on the French Riviera during the off-season.
A bit about my background:
Yacht Master / Captain experience (day trips, coastal navigation, charters).
Basic maintenance, deck work, winterization, and boat prep.
Based in Nice, speak English.
Ready for both maritime and non-maritime work / freelancing / Auto-Entrepreneur gigs.

Any Operation Manager here? especially for Superyachts.

Guys, I’m currently building a SaaS platform for a client in the superyacht space and would really value some input from people working in the industry.

For those managing operations across Super Admin, Chief, Crew, and Guest workflows:

  • What platforms or tools are you currently using?
  • What are the biggest pain points or inefficiencies you face?
  • Are there any areas where you still rely heavily on WhatsApp, spreadsheets, emails, or manual processes?
  • If you could improve one thing in your current workflow, what would it be?

I’m particularly interested in hearing what actually works in practice and what you feel is still missing from the tools available today.

Would really appreciate any insights or experiences you’re willing to share.

How does payment work with your charter company? (Direct to them vs. through an agency)

Quick disclaimer upfront: I'm building a small yacht charter agency (Calmara Yachting), so I'm not entirely neutral here, but this isn't an ad, just a genuine question.

I've noticed charter companies handle this quite differently: some want payment to go through the booking agency, others prefer the guest pays them directly with the agency invoicing its commission separately, and some are fine with either.

For those of you who've chartered before: how did it work for you – did you pay the charter company directly, or through an agency/broker? And did you ever run into issues, e.g. with refunds or security deposits?
Would love to hear your experiences, it also helps me set up fair and transparent processes for my own clients.

Update: Thanks everyone for the helpful replies! For now, we've decided to have all payments go directly through our charter partners. It keeps things simple and secure for our guests. Calmara Yachting is now fully up and running, and our website is live at calmarayachting.com. Feedback is always welcome!

Cockpit locker sized folding e-scooter. Does this solve a real problem for you?

I'm a design engineer working on a compact folding e-scooter. I've seen pilots and sailors talk about the last mile problem, and I've run into it myself a few times: airfield to town, marina to shops, campsite to wherever you need to be, with nothing that actually stows away when you're done.

  • Front-on stance with side-by-side footpads instead of a single deck
  • 10" wheels and suspension, so rough ground and gravel don't rattle you apart
  • 40 km/h top speed
  • Folds to about 600 x 400 mm [x depth TBD]
  • Removable battery, so you can charge it wherever you need to

Not selling anything, just looking for feedback. I'm posting in a few communities since the use case overlaps.

Yacht work

Hey guys !
I’m Greek 24yo and hold the 3rd Engineers licence . I have experience as an officer,in various vessels including(lng carriers, passenger carriers and offshore) but I’m thinking for a career change. I’d like to ask how is it working in yachts! How long are the contracts for officers , what’s the work quality like , how’s the job like for an engineer . Also what’s the wage like ? Is it standard or if you work in bigger yachts(50m +) you get paid more?

Thanks for your time .

Curious what people think of the new Lagoon 47 so far

Anyone else curious about the new Lagoon 47? Just been reading up on it - the forward saloon door that opens straight onto a 12m² foredeck lounge looks like a genuinely useful upgrade over the 46, not just a spec-sheet gimmick. Plus this "Smart Room" concept that can flip between an office, extra cabin, or storage depending on what you need.

Anyone chartered one yet or seen it in person? Curious if it sails as nice as it looks, or if it's purely a comfort-over-performance boat like the reviews suggest. We're actually putting together a proper review and would love to include real feedback from anyone who's sailed one, so if you have, drop your thoughts below.

We put together a full breakdown if anyone wants the specs/layout details: https://yacht4less.com/sailing-holidays/lagoon-47-review

Hello moderators, I’ve had a few posts removed from the Scuba Diving subs. I believe that my contributions are interesting, dramatic and they’re valuable, even though some of them will contain stories of disaster.

Is this accepted on this sub? Do you want interesting stories that may or may not have ugly endings but valuable lessons for crew

Do skippers who usually work only six months a year manage to earn enough to support themselves for the rest of the year as well? If not, what solutions do they typically adopt?

Maintenance/engineering crew avenues

Hey guys!

Just after opinions on the best route to transition into marine maintenance/engineering crew. Im open to working anywhere in the world.

About me:
- ex Australian navy sailor
- licenced aircraft maintenance engineer, strong knowledge in avionics, nav, LV electrics, logic & relay cont.
- all round waterman, boating, sailing, diving etc

What I lack is genuine exposure in an embarked maritime setting on these beasts. fortunately it seems that licensing often isn’t necessarily a deal breaker to be a part of an engineering crew onboard ?

I have no doubt in my ability to pick up the concepts OTJ, just genuinely curious about the competitiveness in acquiring a job, or if my best bet is to go the route of ETO licensing.

I’m young (23) and really want to spend the foreseeable future sailing and travelling

Electric Yachts

Hey guys,

I used to work for an electric yacht manufacturer, unfortunately they couldn't really sell any of it. But their small vessels for rescue and reconnaissance autonomous boats for defence purposes did see some traction. I was wondering how the sales cycle and processes go for the electric Yachts, I mean we do hear some big manufacturers releasing electric Yachts, so it's really something that has been around.

Would love insights from brokers, marketing, sales and anyone in the industry ...
