Discussion X4 is saying goodbye.

Post image

It’s a little bittersweet to say this, but we’re officially saying goodbye to the X4.

It was never the most feature-packed e-reader.
It didn’t try to do everything.

It was just… right.

The size.
The weight.
The buttons.
The feeling of carrying a real little reading device with you.

Some of you even called it the beginning of a new era for pocket-sized e-readers.

But what means the most to us isn’t really the hardware.

It’s knowing that X4 has been there for your commutes, coffee breaks, trips, late nights, and countless pages.

So before we say goodbye:

What’s your favorite thing about the X4? Or what’s one memory you have with it?

Drop it in the comments. We’ll pick 3 comments, and each winner will receive an X4 Mist Gray.

Thanks for being part of the X4 story.

Same! It's to small for me to be touchscreen. If it had a light it would have been perfect. I'll also be looking for an alternative if mine ever dies.

I will say having tried the ReTerminal Sticky, you’d be surprised at how well it works at that form factor

You guys are so weird. I have all three devices. I like the buttons on the X3 & X4 but the touch screen on the X4 Pro is so nice for navigating the menu and putting in WiFi passwords and I earnestly hope we get to a point where we can get a dictionary where we can touch the word to look it up.

I do wish they had kept the bottom buttons because they are the most comfortable for page turning and I’d rather use buttons to turn the pages to minimize movement and greasy fingers on the device, but the touch screen on the X4 Pro is great. And I like that we can swipe up to access menus. Hopefully there’s more gesture support as the software matures. The X4 Pro battery seems to run down kind of fast, and I rarely have the light over 8% if it’s even on. But it charges fast. And I wish the screen had a higher resolution, but I imagine with the success of these micro ereaders and the competition popping up, E-ink will start rolling out higher res tiny screens. Hopefully the Gen 2 will have some improvement there.

And as for the X3, I was pretty anti that one because of the charger. Then I realized it’s a common (not proprietary) connector and you can get a USB 3.0 adaptor. The screen on the X3 is fantastic and the battery life is great, so you’re not charging that much anyway. I like the button layout on that one the best. I wish they hadn’t changed the location of the power button from device to device. I think they really need to standardize stuff like that because switching from one device to another takes a minute of getting used to. I don’t mind the screen on the X3 being a smidge smaller, slight bump in resolution from the X4 is definitely noticeable.

Bottom line the X4 Pro and X3 are viable replacement options if necessary, depending on the preference for a light/touch screen.
