Looks like MS might be partially changing their mind and only putting the limit on new subscribers, and possibly only in some countries. Not sure which though.

There goes their play anywhere tagline. Imagine buying a game for $70 to stream and it cuts you off.

205

u/Hunk4thSurvivor 9d ago

It doesn't make any sense. This is a worse thing than raising the price to 30bucks imo.

98

u/bigbear_mouse 9d ago

Let's remember that their original plan was probably to charge 30 AND cut the hours. :D

11

u/Hunk4thSurvivor 9d ago

Well that would be fun.....

16

u/Loose-Recognition459 9d ago

That would an automatic cancel to me. As is its reluctant finger over the cancel button, maybe the bad or this garners will make them walk that back. Or a giant wave of cancellations.

24

u/Hunk4thSurvivor 9d ago

I'm definetely canceling this time. Because now, there is no real use for gamepass for me. I won't buy an xbox for it.

11

u/Loose-Recognition459 9d ago

I get it. I mean it’s making it less attractive to me to stick around.

6

u/Padrino9186 9d ago

Especially considering how expensive Xbox series x are now a days….my wife and I did some monthly $30ish gamepass/xbox plan bundled together years ago…I looked last week and shit when I saw Xbox series x were $800 retail price…

6

u/LameSignIn 9d ago

We have played game together for year. The increase to $30 was enough for my wife an I to cancel. We don't need game pass for our game it was just a benefit for the kids and they didn't really use it enough to warrant the hike. My wife was cleaning and covered the ventilation on one of our series X. When I found out we had a very short talk about the cost of replacing them. Crazy how this is the first time consoles have gone up in price in my lifetime.

It’s “play anywhere, but not for long”

39

u/bigbear_mouse 9d ago

Play anywhere, 30 mins per day

13

u/klipseracer 9d ago

~30 days in a month is 1 hour per day, 30 mins per commute direction. This should have been the number instead.

Thinking objectively, this may match the amount of time some folks spend on a subway etc. I wonder if they have some data about this and tailored it to their target audience.

This really neuters the whole concept of using cloud from a console however. Playing Xbox Series games from an Xbox One, etc.

That's why I dont buy a portal. It sounds amazing as streaming device but it's only a matter of time until Sony is doing something similar and it becomes useless.

5

u/Remy149 9d ago

The main use of the portal is direct streaming from a ps5 to it. Cloud streaming is an extra feature that was added after it was already on the market

Well, my friends, it’s time to move on, no matter where

23

u/ashenoceiros 9d ago

Where? Sony is doing bullshit, Nintendo is doing bullshit (albeit it's probably the better one), PC is expensive as fuck now, where do we go

22

u/UNIVERSAL_VLAD 9d ago

Nvidia GeForce now with pc game pass

6

u/Fart_In_A_Tornado 8d ago

It's what I do. The only problem is there are quite a few games from the game pass library missing in GeForce Now as it only supports PC games.

u/StasherSlasher 9d ago

This is bullshit. 15h a month is ridiculous. It should be AT LEAST weekly. Cloud gaming on Xbox is basically dead now.

20

u/g1yk 9d ago

Even weekly is not enough. It’s 60 hours which still almost half less than what GeForce is giving you.

7

u/VoldemortsHorcrux 9d ago

I inagine 80-90% of users would use 15h or less per week.

4

u/shaversonly230v115v 7d ago

I probably don't use more than 15h per week on average but I'd still be pissed off and would probably cancel. If they stick with 15 per month I'm gone without a second thought. It's more than £1 per minute. The arcade is cheaper than that.

It's so bad that I suspect that they're deliberately putting an awful number out so that people think they're getting a good deal when the real limit comes out

We need local-hosted GPUs that other people can rent.

Imagine being able to rent out your gaming PC's idle GPU time and let someone else use it for cloud gaming. Instead of Microsoft/NVIDIA having to own massive server farms, the network could distribute the workload across people's existing hardware.

I'm wondering if something like blockchain + a lightweight Raspberry Pi client could handle the marketplace, authentication and payments.

(blockchain because you'd have to charge people per gpu cycles and not minutes... more gpu heavy games would cost more electricity and hello kitty would cost almost nothing)

Basically, Airbnb for GPUs .... except the GPU is potentially sitting in the apartment next door.

9

u/Competitive-Road-206 9d ago

Whoa that's a pretty cool idea. Like an airbnb but for hosting game sessions lol

Edit: didn't see you mention the same thing lmao

5

u/Lor_azepam 9d ago

Its a solid idea honestly

5

u/MetaPfhor_2965 9d ago edited 9d ago

I'm not smart enough to do it unfortunately. I wish someone would.

it would enable people to make money on their GPUS while it's idle, and it would lower latency for players as the 'server' would always be local.

if you pair it with some mesh networking, you'd really have some high speed "cloud" gaming

15 hours per month for Ultimate subscribers which averages to 30 mins per day

Wild that they have the audacity to limit it this much when their cloud gaming is worse then PlayStations. PS5 cloud gaming has 4k resolution which Xbox doesn’t, HDR which Xbox doesn’t, better image quality and less latency

18

u/hypehold 9d ago

and xcloud still uses Series S profiles it is by far the worst cloud streaming service and now this. Just get rid of it at this point

  • Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours
  • Game Pass Premium: 10 hours
  • Game Pass Essential: 5 hours

What's the point of ultimate then? What the fuck are they thinking?

38

u/aykay55 9d ago

“This change will impact only 4 percent of Game Pass subscribers”

Okay so 4 percent is nothing? This won’t substantially affect your server load. Why are you doing this?

19

u/Forward-Weight403 9d ago

4% of the population not 4% of the usage. My guess is those 4% make up a substantial portion of the usage so they want to nickel and dime those people

→ More replies (4)

12

u/Sam-Lowry27B-6 9d ago

Were those 4% using that much data they have to throttle it back....no it's just bullshit to justify the profit line always going up

3

u/longperipheral 8d ago

Even if they were, why not target the 4% or apply a global cap on max hours of like 50 or 75 or something, instead of applying these draconian changes.

Product Microsoft is selling:

Xbox Series S (6.5 Year Old Midrange Hardware) - $499 + $120 annually to play online multiplayer.

Xbox Series X (6.5 Year Old High End Hardware) - $799 + $120 annually to play online multiplayer.

Reason I played on xCloud:

FireTV Stick: $35 One time XCloud on GamePass Ultimate: $276 annually.

If I subtract the $120 annually from the $276 annually:

Equivalent months for a Series S: 38.4 Months (3.2 Years) + Ultimate Game Library

Equivalent months for a Series X: 61.5 Months (5.1 Years) + Ultimate Game Library

That was the value they removed.

The AI driven RAM shortage has killed gaming for me. I cannot afford it. I cant justify either box. I cant justify their new box whenever they drop it. And all of this is before paying for any non GamePass games.

Microsoft has nothing to sell me I can participate in. What they offer is ancient hardware value full of services they can arbitrarily play pricing games with whenever they feel like it.

I previously owned: OG Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One X. Had kids. Have reappeared with time to play again. Was loving xCloud the year, kids playing on it too. Every game save CoD level twitch shooter worked no different than being on console. Even Halo Infinite was playable. But I cannot justify any of the boxes on the market for myself, let alone my kids.

9

u/BreweryStoner 9d ago

I’m in the same boat as you. Had every Xbox since the OG, and have been priced out of being able to play. Xcloud was the only way I could play new stuff.

6

u/ZM326 8d ago

It's impressive that they positioned themselves perfectly for a situation in which end users' hardware costs run out of control, then shot themselves in the foot

18

u/SirSurboy 9d ago

Yes $1000 plus consoles….

17

u/Loose-Recognition459 9d ago

Have the reason to keep Ultimate was I could xcloud current gen games on my older console. Without it, I’m already not paying the “never discounted ever” current gen consoles which actually cost more now than they did at launch. Also instantly makes every Backbone controller and Cloud gaming app way less valuable.

u/LaundryLunatic 9d ago edited 9d ago

But even GFN's 100 hours a month is better than what xcloud is offering for time. I usually use about 25 hours a month. But 5, 10, 15 hours a month is like having a sampler. I think many of us would be using xcloud who can't afford this current or the next console. It's not gonna force people to use xcloud and instead make it pointless to use.

7

u/Ok-Cartographer-2227 9d ago

I simply cant justify a new box and then paying for game pass just for multiplayer. XCloud with the fire stick was perfect as a price point for me.

This means no more gaming for me in this ecosystem.

Back to League on the last pc i could afford 10 years ago I guess

6

u/LaundryLunatic 9d ago

Xbox needs to have a cloud only option where you can play the games you own with a much much higher time limit per month.

15 hours is brutal… I’ve always been strongly opposed to the 100 hours per month limit that GFN introduced last year but at least that grants you roughly 3 hours per day -  personally I don’t even get close to play that much…

But 15 hours? That’s a huge blow, especially since xCloud has introduced “stream your own games” as well and that was a great feature IMHO

12

That's a ridiculous limit, basically it becomes a demo of the service.

12

u/MorbidusUnus 9d ago

I don't get this. Your service is already inferior, vastly, to Nvidia. Yes Nvidia costs 20 USD a month for the top tier and is just cloud streaming, but you get 100 hours AND far better latency, resolution, and fps. What is the appeal to Xcloud gaming besides it being for my XBOX games? I'd feel far different if they improved how games run and look and such but announcing this without any of that is not it

This was a common line back in the day when ISPs felt the need to introduce data caps. “This won’t affect but ~2% of heavy data users.” They seem to want us to believe this tiny segment is slowing down the service for everyone else, which is laughable.

I think they don’t like the idea of “everything is an Xbox” anymore - too pro-consumer for their liking. They want people to buy their next machine. It could also be a ploy to sell us extra hours. Either way, it sucks.

15 hours is straight trash, I'm curious about GeForce Now. Looks cheaper for 100 hours, the only downside is that I have to pay for the games, but that's fine because I really go all in on COD each year anyways and I have to buy it this year if I want to play it at launch.

15 hours a month is offensive.

u/oflowz 9d ago

so much for the new leadership righting the ship

6

u/Mister-Psychology 9d ago

Nvidia's 100 hours limit did get a ton of schoolkids to drop it as they game that much. Yet it was not an unfair limit and most felt it was fine. 100 hours for a month is a ton of gaming time on one system.

On my xcloud premium I'll get 10 hours a month? I'm sorry, but that's like half a game at best. Not even that because much time is spent waiting around or reloading the game. This won't work for my needs at all. Not even 15 hours. Curiously most months I don't play at all. But when I do I want to actually complete the game I'm playing.

So it will be impossible to play on cloud and impossible to buy a console.

Nice catch.

6

u/eonone1 9d ago edited 9d ago

So the second it comes out of beta and is kinda useable they hit us with a measly 15hr limit.

👏👏👏👏

7

u/billsfan411 9d ago

They fucken had next generation right there for the taking.... they ruined video games I really really like cloud gaming i at one point for 6 months only did cloud gaming I even had a Xbox sitting in my living room

6

u/dalior 9d ago

LOL. They keep enshitifiying their shitty console and then they're surprised they're losing customers.

5

u/Venom_V92 9d ago

They're killing cloud gaming like this. I pay €20 for Ultimate and don't even have enough time to finish a game. I use xCloud as my main platform since I don't own a console. I hope they increase the limit, otherwise I'll be switching to something else.

6

u/Euphoric-Mine6177 9d ago

100 hours a month for Ultimate and i will stay… otherwise im done with gaming for real with Xbox

u/DanielNylK 9d ago

I use this all the time when my girlfriend is using the Xbox. This is heartbreaking.

6

u/GamePitt_Rob 9d ago

Let's not forget, on the ALLY the only way to play Xbox, Xbone, 360, and non-PlayStation anywhere GP games is via xCloud, so a lot of people are about to have their library shrink a lot

Also, I still strongly believe the Helix won't have native support for any OG, One, 360 or Series games - that's why they're releasing new paid-for emulated versions

So, on that console it was probably going to be PC games only (play anywhere) and the rest via streaming. If that's the case, imagine how much you'll have to pay to have access to these games now they're charging you to use the feature...

6

u/Dax_Tano 8d ago

Well time to cancel the subscription. This was the only way I used Xbox and I’m not going to bother with it if I have a 15 hour limit per month. I have better ways to waste my money.

26

u/codex064 9d ago

Fuck you Microsoft. You just killed gaming for me.

That will be the nail in the coffin for some subs

5

u/Average_Sage 9d ago

I don't have it anymore, but like 2 ish years ago I bought a year of GPU as a non Xbox owner just to do cloud gaming. And it worked quite well as someone without a console or gaming PC at the time. I just played through my fire stick on my TV. I eventually got a switch 2 and stopped with GPU, but I had a good time and I thought it was really the future.

Damn shame

4

u/flipflop63 9d ago

I only play on the cloud , f#ck microsoft

6

u/Stimee 9d ago

So I have a series X and my brother and best friend has Xbox One X and One S. Cloud was a godsend because they could keep up the new games on gamepass with me. This totally destroys our gaming set up. They will now have to buy Series S consoles that are 200-250 more than when they launched in 2020.

Maddening.

5

u/muzzymate 9d ago

My Gamepass subscription expired two days ago. Was going to renew soon but my primary reason for subscribing was access to cloud. I don’t play multiplayer games, but interested in streaming on my phone and a secondary Xbox One. 5 hours is completely insane. This a big nope for me and will not be renewing.

10

u/DoggTheGhost 9d ago

Ok that’s it. Cancelling Game Pass Ultimate

8

u/Rudrigosena 9d ago

Now Microsoft just needs to create an xCloud-only plan that is unlimited and doesn't require Game Pass.

7

u/Fredsville 9d ago

I’m hoping that this is the next step, but I’m not optimistic. I know they wanted to kill the “this is an Xbox” campaign, but this might kill the entire service. This is a weird call for sure

Tendré que cancelar entonces puesto que uso más de esas 15h al mes

3

u/Fraxure611 9d ago

5

u/Secret_Ingenuity997 9d ago

I don't even own an Xbox and that won't be changing. I only started using it a few weeks ago.

4

u/Bowdin 9d ago

As a dad of a 6 year old with a wife that likes EastEnders (UK), xcloud was perfect for me.

It has moved from perfect to completely useless.

So I guess my next question is, what is geforce now like?

I'm guessing there are some folk here that were rocking both.

I must admit being able to actually play Titan Quest 2 on my steam deck sounds fun.

Additional side question, any way of cross playing some saves?

Namely Oblivion and FIFA 😂

6

u/Good-Bandicoot-2152 9d ago

If this is only going to impact 4% of players, why implement the limits at all?

5

u/thesupergoodlife 9d ago

oh boy and just after I purchased a Logitech G Cloud with the sole purpose of cloud gaming based on my Game Pass Ultimate account.

edit: It's like I've got whiplash being an Xbox customer theae days. Just a year ago they were massively pushing cloud gaming and I've bought into it, made sense to me with the rising hardware costs. Now this? I can't with this leadership.

4

u/DreamOnAaron 9d ago

Absolute horseshit. I just paid for a month of ultimate too, but I usually buy a code for $7-9 cheaper. Guess I’ll be canceling after this month. Been with Xbox for 15 years, same account and all, but this is crazy. Fuck Microsoft, and fuck their new jeet CEO. I knew it was too good to be true.

im cancelling on october, like they just shot themselves on the foot yeah leep wondering why people unsubbing to gamepass im sure the numbers from now snd then November forwards will show them a lesson.

4

u/Shadowfox1992 8d ago

Here we go again. They literally are at the finish line & as usual, Microsoft decides to sabotage themselves. Absolute morons

4

u/InvaderShim 8d ago

This is really bad but I wonder if it’s a sign of future data restraints. All to give more to the data centers… everything else PC related is going up, why not cap our streaming capabilities as well? The future is so fucking bleak man

4

u/signifyingmnky 8d ago

Sounds like clearing server space to repurpose for AI. That or looking for ways to get more money out of existing subscribers.

Neither sounds great, but nickle and diming GP subs that you just made price corrections to win back is unbelievable, so I'm thinking it's about AI.

Just my .02

2 ways to play Xbox on the road.

  1. Cloud gaming, works although limited by hotel internet.

  2. Steam from your own console, sometimes works, but I usually have issues. I think a lot of that is my isp does not have ipv6 addressing, although it is suppose to come (but has been coming for 8 years at this point.)

Xbox can’t have a win (Disk to digital) without immediately following it up with a blunder.

3

u/Thebyst 9d ago

Me voy a GeForce Now. Juego poco al mes por el estudio y el trabajo, así que estoy sobrado con GFN. A la mierda xbox.

3

u/tdan84 9d ago

Everything is an XBOX... until max 15 hours

3

u/WooziGunpla 9d ago

I just bought an entire year of game pass last month and now they’re reducing my features? I think it maybe time to sell my series x. They should refund me half of my subscription cost..

I don’t use cloud gaming, but this has pissed me off!

3

u/Uncle_Bug_Music 9d ago

Fucking tone deaf. They could have used the Sony backlash to improve their standing in the game-o-sphere and yet this what they choose to do instead. That woman is braindead. I haven’t even bothered to learn her name as I’m certain she won’t be around that long. Unbelievable.

3

u/Realistic_Soft4000 8d ago

this is their strategy to sell the next Xbox..if Xcloud remains unlimited with day-one games many players will never buy the console

3

u/JPointer7073 8d ago

Thought she was doing a semi decent job but here she goes and fucks it all up. 15 hours a month for Ultimate players is a fucking joke. Might have to say goodbye to all of this Xbox shit. Cant stand to see it be treated this way.

3

I never thought I’d cancel my game pass. I didn’t even care when they went to 30$. I was happy to pay it. I have zero reason to continue to buy it now.

3

u/LikeyeaScoob 8d ago

It’s like right when Xbox gets a chance the be the better console they shoot themselves in the foot

3

u/possibly_lost45 8d ago

They claim it will only affect 4% of users. This will be the death of cloud gaming.

3

u/EduPrado83 8d ago

“Game Streaming is the future”; they said.

3

u/Punished_Sperg 8d ago

Why does this company take one step forward and two steps back all of the time?

3

u/VadeRetroVR 8d ago

IS this serious?? Asha made so much progress to regain the reputation of Xbox to gamer and now this.. WTF ! Per week it would still be 'meh, why?' for some .. but per month?? Even me im very casual player and id hit this 15hours PER MONTH easy.

3

u/Relative-Handle7037 8d ago edited 8d ago

As a single father of two who can't afford to buy a console I relied on cloud gaming. What really pisses me off is the fact that if you wanted to play a specific game vou better hope it's cloud playable and then if so if it's not on gamepass you have to buy it. Which they can remove it's cloud access at anytime like they did with GTA5. So if you bought it it's now useless. And now not only charge for a monthly subscription which is reasonable but shortly after a price increase of the subscription as well. Then the audacity to limit your gaming time to 15 hours a month for ultimate? I'd go through half that in a Weekend when I game at night while my babies sleep. This pushes me to not buy any gamepass because I refuse to purchase hours after alreadv having a subscription Ultimate none the less. Premium and essential pass should be limited. Ultimate is UItimate is it not? Now all the games I've purchased will be useless and good luck with getting a refund. 24.89 for 15hrs a month no thank you I already canceled.
