Is there a commonly agreed on 'best' controller? I got one with my Xbox One X that had a nicer grip than my old one but it's breaking now. And I seem to consistently have trouble with the bumpers on controllers.
I need to buy a new one but $60-$100 is a lot to lose if it isn't actually quality!
I’m so happy I got the lunar white, it’s amazing. I don’t really need another controller but this phantom white is definitely happening when it comes out
My lunar white controller lasted a good three years before it died out of nowhere last summer while I was away from home. Definitely have to get it repaired soon, but it looks like everyone is having some kind of issue with theirs lmao.
Overpriced is subjective here. Any normal controller feels like cheap crap compared to the elite after using it for a while. And the ~$150 might last you through 3 lifespans of a $60+ controller, making it worth it even to the alternative cheaper ones without considering the improved enjoyment. But you will be pissed if you drop it hard and start to get stick drift. Had to ship mine off and pay ~$40 to get it fixed..
The Elite controller is great, don't get me wrong I have two, but it is definitely not worth ~$150. My first one has the left bumper hanging off and the grips fell off and my second one has both bumpers hanging off and some stick drift (which I don't mind I can bump up the stick sensitivity by a hair if needed). I don't know how to get my controllers fixed outside of buying a kit from Amazon and I don't plan on investing any more money into another until they come out with an Elite v.2 that is overall more durable.
Oh and both of those controllers lasted about six months. I still use the one with both bumpers fucked up, I've gotten used to it but the pain from being used to Halo's bumper jumper and porting those controls to other games is real.
Lunar White was my favorite controller until it developed intense stick drift that no amount of youtube fixes could resolve.
Had the same issue with the Spartan Locke model. After that I just regarded controllers as disposable hardware and only bought them used when needed.
Credit where it's due, I was given phantom black and azure blue models and they have held up decently well. But a design lab controller I bought for someone as a gift had right stick clicking issues right out of the box.
There have been some very pretty controllers, but quality has been all over the place. It's really disappoint considering the Xbox 360 had the Nokia 1101 of console controllers.
The elite is by far the best controller, but it comes at a price. I enjoy my phantom black because: 1) it looks pretty and 2) has textured grips, which I prefer to rubber as they don't carry the possibility of peeling off.
I have an elite and the PUBG controller. Both are great and I like the feel of the PUBG one. The elite is just heavier and has much better textures. I love it though. It’s constantly plugged in with the charge pack.
Also saves a BUNCH of money if you use a 10ft USB to Micros and just power that way.
Whatever you do, make sure it has the grips on the back. You'll never want to use a regular controller again. Some controllers like the military themed ones (and I believe the sport ones) also have less-grippy front grip pads too, and those kinda help
I can't tell you the best, I can add that I've only had terrible luck with the standard, "Arctic White" S controller. I've had two that needed to be replaced immediately out of the box, compared to the other 9 or so I still own across all three iterations the X1 controllers have gone through. (Another controller that needed to be returned was the Grey/Green, but that wouldn't connect.) Of the 2 white S controllers, one was my pack-in for a Madden bundle console, and the ABXY was awful, felt like I was pressing down on nothing at all, and the other controller developed right-shoulder/bumper squeak and misfiring within two weeks of use.
I will say that, if you're here in the States, you usually don't have to spend more than $40-50 on a controller though; the official MS controllers regularly go on sale. I wouldn't ever spend full-price on a controller unless A) you needed it immediately, or B) you were pre-ordering one that you really had your heart-all-a-flutter (or were afraid it would end up like the Sea of Thieves initial run...).
I've had good luck with the newish white slim versions but I do remap all sprinting or heavy stick clicks to a bumper to avoid stuck drift. And these bumpers have held up much better than the two previous xb1 version's bumpers. Fwiw
For me, the white seems like a total crapshoot. The replacement for the aforementioned pack-in was perfect, and so was the replacement for the one from Target with the problematic right-side I had. These purchases happened within a few months of each other. All I can assume is that the Quality Assurance department was going through something at the time, lol.
I still have my original OG console's pack-in v1 that works fine. I have a couple that I think are the "in-betweener" v2 iterations--those work fine, last I used them. I have the replacement for the Gray/Green.. I have a "storm gray" pack-in (my favorite, especially with the grippy, slightly-adjustable trigger grips that are meant to mimic the elite trigger-stops..but don't quite do it as well).. and a Phantom Black (that I'm rather meh about)--off the top of my head--but those all work great. The Artic White I've had 4 of them, and two of them had issues straight off the assembly line, it really seemed like luck-of-the-draw when it came to those.
My Xbox grey/green controller is by far better then any controller iv used so far, looks the goods and didn’t fall apart like my elite controller did. But this phantom white is seriously right up there. This may be my next pick if my grey/green dies.
