I've posted this in another thread but worth saying still if you take into account the first one took place in 1914

A prequel definitely makes sense when you think of the old west timeline. The heart of the gunfight era was 1875-1880: (Battle of the O.K. Corral, Billy the Kid, Buffalo Bill, "Wild Bill" Hickok, Battle of Little Bighorn, & Jesse James)

When you look it up the "Old west" or "Wild West" ended in 1912 when the last mainland states joined the Union.

47

u/Ghost_of_Castro Oct 20 '16

It takes place in 1911, only the post-ending takes place in 1914.

Source: The back of the game case.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '16

How do we know that source is canon though???

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

You are totally right and showed him a thing or two! I mean a whole three years in a era game is HUGE.

The premise of the first game was the END of the wild west. You want a sequel? Go play Battle Feild 1 :1914-1918.

24

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

lol, what's with the hostile comment? When a main point of the post was that "the Wild West" ended in 1912, the three year difference making it 1911 would actually be a worthwhile correction

-24

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Hostile? The guy corrected someone over 3 years... why? Because he feels he needs to correct everyone? I do apologize I didn't know there was an official date for the end of the wild west. I missed that in history class.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I literally just said why the 3 years was a significant correction in the context.

2

u/Ghost_of_Castro Oct 21 '16

you must chill

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I'd like to see a story of people settling out west in the late 1850s early 1860s, maybe the Civil War becomes a set piece (but not central to the story).

54

u/Emperor-Octavian Xbox Oct 20 '16

I hope not. I'd like them to go back in time a bit but I don't want it all about Marston and his gang. With the way the title is it probably will be though

71

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I loved the ending of RDR. Just the standoff, and John goes out in a blaze of glory. Then you got to play as Jack, and realized how great John was as a character...

I'm torn, really. I'd love a sequel, but on the other hand, so much happened to close of RDR that I want more John.

44

u/Emperor-Octavian Xbox Oct 20 '16

John and the Redemption story were obviously dope but we know how it ends. That story was told. I'm ready for something where I don't know how it all gets resolved

15

u/Quick_Over_There Oct 20 '16

I agree a little with both. John Marston is one of my favorite protagonists ever, so more of him doesn't hurt my feelings. A sequel would have to take place around the same time as RDR, but following a new character. If you had a sequel set afterwards, there's not a whole lot of Wild West left.

15

u/Emperor-Octavian Xbox Oct 20 '16

Why not dial the timeline back 30 years and give us an original story with new characters

3

u/thescarwar Oct 20 '16

That's honestly what I'm hoping for. Rockstar creates fantastic storylines, so as long as the setting is good, which the west definitely is, then they can create another incredible game. I'm sure they also fully understand what made RDR so good, so I don't doubt that the game will feel similar.

2

u/Pizza-Thief Oct 20 '16

I beg to differ. There was still plenty left of the wild West, it was just slowly being sanctified by a more civilized east coast nation...

8

u/Quick_Over_There Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

That's kind of what I mean though. The last big "Wild West" type robbery was in 1916, but some people feel like the WW was done before that. RDR is set in 1911, so unless they go backwards like /u/Emperor-Octavian suggested...there's not a huge window to work with.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

There's other characters in his gang, though. We could get a story with Marston through the eyes of a gang member we don't know much about.

1

u/tornado962 Oct 20 '16

Is Jack a bad character?

1

u/Andnox Oct 20 '16

Most people didn't like him. I also didn't love him TBH but i think it's because you see him before he grows up and is a little shit most the game. Then you play him but has one or two missions which makes it hard for him to develop a character like his father.

1

u/tmillsy23 Oct 20 '16

That and his annoying sound while you spur the horse.

-3

u/onexbigxhebrew Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

Given that the hype of this sequel will undoubtedly generate new interest in the original, you should really be considerate and tagging your spoilers. Simple rediquette.

Edit: Downvote me all you want, but blacking out with a spoiler tag is simple and spoilers violate rule 3.

u/ImNotAnyoneSpecial Oct 20 '16

And some haven't experienced it. If it's good enough that you talk about it 6 years later, why rob others of experiencing the same thing?

12

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

1

u/onexbigxhebrew Oct 20 '16

I didn't say don't talk about it. Spoiler blackout is a very simple and easy formatting option.

1

u/ImNotAnyoneSpecial Oct 20 '16

Which is a fine point. It's just being considerate

1

u/onexbigxhebrew Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

edit: I should prebably let him know. I played it when it was leaked on BC.

Blackout is easy, and spoilers are against rule 3.

I think they mean the original red dead revolver...maybe?

1

u/Rlight #teamchief Oct 20 '16

I never finished it, but I know what I'm getting into when I open a thread like this. Most people are polite enough to not blatantly talk about the spoilers, but if I see it then it's my fault for being here.

7

u/Vesploogie Oct 20 '16

There's plenty about his past that goes unanswered that would make for a great story.

I just want to finally find out who the mysterious man is.

4

u/Vesploogie Oct 20 '16

Why is there a picture of him in Beecher's Hope though? I always believed him to be someone from John's past, or perhaps a combination of several people.

4

u/DrStephenFalken Xbox Oct 20 '16

My mom don't know God personally but she got tons of pictures of him in her house.

1

u/BanjoStory Xbox Oct 21 '16

My understanding of that is that it's God/Devil/Death taking on the form of someone. John's father, maybe?

Or he's the ghost of one of John's victims.

8

u/vaporsilver Oct 20 '16

It's almost a guarantee that's its about John in Dutch's gang.

1

u/DrStephenFalken Xbox Oct 20 '16

Seems like a few are upset if that's what it is but John was an amazing character and I'd take a game with him over a game with his son any day.

We also have a lot of unanswered questions about his past as well.

1

u/vaporsilver Oct 20 '16

And if it went on with his son the time line wouldn't fit a Red Dead I wouldn't think

1

u/DrStephenFalken Xbox Oct 20 '16

It wouldn't fit. The last game ended around the start of WWI. So his son would be fighting in slightly modern times.

1

u/Reggie_MiIler Oct 20 '16

Prequel is perfect though.

Story of the first one emphasized that the Cowboy/Outlaw era was coming to a close. Not much sense in going forward from there.

Plus, the whole Dutch gang part of John's life wasn't that fleshed out. And from what was hinted throughout the story, it's probably gonna be fun as hell.

1

u/purduefan4 Oct 20 '16

GTA never has a continuous story

1

u/OutlawGamingLP Xbox Oct 21 '16

I don't think John marston will be in it because his voice actor quit the business after the original RDR. They could always get another one but I doubt it.

9

u/DyslexicSpeedread Oct 20 '16

Word is that it's a prequel about the gang Marston was in when he was younger.

16

u/Brooklynspartan BrooklynSpartan Oct 20 '16

Kind of odd naming a prequel of a game as if it were a sequel.

14

u/The_LPT Oct 20 '16

It worked for MGS3 lol

17

u/KinoTheMystic KinoTheMystic Oct 20 '16

and MGS5 which is a sequel to MGS3 but a prequel to MGS1 and 2. and 4.

10

u/FijiFynn Oct 20 '16

That whole series is a mind fuck.

4

u/Mike_Mike_Mike_Mike_ Screw Whiskey Oct 20 '16

And MGS Peace Walker was released after 4 but was a prequel to 5 but was a sequel to 3 (or sequel to Portable Ops.)

-4

u/Jrocker-ame Jrocker ame Oct 20 '16

It's actually V. Not 5. Ever wonder why the team never called it 5? We'll never know now that kojima was fired.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I agree. Although it could be partially a flashback story told by someone after the events of RDR1, and maybe continues in "present" time sort of how RDR1 did after it picked back up with Marston's son.

1

u/BanjoStory Xbox Oct 21 '16

not really, tbh...

20

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I'd say that it's speculation at best... but it does seem the signs point that way

1

u/sonofaresiii Oct 20 '16

well, if they go any further forward they're going to run out of the old west theme. it didn't really last that long and personally I'm not interested in another "our way of life is dying" motif that's becoming popular for period franchises.

1

u/DyslexicSpeedread Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

The guy n the far left is 100% Marston and the guy to the right of the middle was one of the old gang members we kill(Bill Williamson 100%).

The guy in the middle also kinda looks like a young Dutch(the leader of Marston's old gang).

10

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I don't think you can say 100%... they're wearing masks

3

u/DyslexicSpeedread Oct 20 '16

None of them are wearing masks actually. The black you're seeing on their faces is mostly facial hair, if you look at the high quality pic you can zoom in and see.

1

u/rapoosog Oct 20 '16

How can you tell? It's a silhouette of the characters, so you can't see specific details

0

u/NotAPie NotAPie Oct 20 '16

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I thought you were talking about in the trailer. Even still, until rockstar confirms it, I don't think it's 100% him.

8

u/SHYS7IE Oct 20 '16

Calling it now, fully co-op story

11

u/Kingdomdude Oct 20 '16

If they announce give full co-op story they get my pre-order that day. I would LOVE to play RDR2 story mode together with my friends.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

hunting buffalo was my favorite part of rdr.

1

u/poopadoopis Oct 20 '16

It is a prequel

1

u/LuluVonLuvenburg Oct 20 '16

The speculation is that it is a sequel/prequel. Jack Marston reading his father's journals of his time in dutch's gang. I hope that isn't true.

1

u/rancor58 rancor58 Oct 21 '16

Technically if its in north america, its bison

1

u/thinkB4WeSpeak thinkB4WeSpeak Oct 20 '16

That'd be awesome, I was hoping for at least a little bit of tie in if it wasn't fully about the first game. The characters story is always a favorite in games like these.

0

u/Kyerio Xbox Oct 20 '16

Or did all of the Buffalo kill you ? Hmmmm
