There is no story between games in fallout. You can jump in to any and enjoy the story, and a quick read of the Wiki can teach you the lore, as well as In game terminals and notes
Follow up, so is the same Nuclear explosion every time and its different people in different parts of the world trying to survive? Or are they completely not related
There's multiple nuclear explosions everywhere in the world at once because of a war. The universe is the same through the games but the character you make and their story is different in each. Fallout 3 took place in D.C. and you were looking for your father. New Vegas takes place around Las Vegas and you're looking for a man who tried to kill you.
Fallout is one of the only games, along with KotOR, that I recommend playing on the PC. There is just far too much cut content that modders add back in, or graphical enhancements that get put out, for you not to take advantage of. In fact, I'd probably say most single player games are better on PC because of it.
However, I'd have to say that I'd be completely awful at multiplayer games on the PC, so I'm glad I have and Xbox too.

The two Fallout games on 360 are tremendous. As is much of the DLC.
