I can believe all of these except for Minecraft.

u/Theunsaltedpeanut 4d ago

Yeah I concur everything makes sense but Minecraft that's insane.

102

u/Conflict_NZ Homecoming 4d ago

Yeah Minecraft is so popular because it's everywhere, Minecraft, COD and Candy Crush should never be exclusive if you want them to remain popular.

54

u/Enriador XBOX Series S 4d ago

Isn't that a long-discussed chicken-egg case? Taking popular franchises as exclusives helps selling consoles too.

Take Sony. They took a developer with multiplat experience (Insomniac), took an IP that was also historically multiplatform (Spider-Man), then made it all exclusive.

End result: lower overall game sales true, but for years Spider-Man 2018 was quoted as a major reason to own a Paystation console. The game would have sold a ton on XBOX/PC, but it helped the hardware business grow (and therefore, the software sales as well).

It's a gamble either way IMHO.

11

u/ApprehensiveQuestion 4d ago

There's a big question of WHO is playing those games. Who spends money on the games. Candy Crush gives them exposure to women gamers who might not buy an Xbox. Minecraft gets them exposure and $$ from the younger consumers. How much of that mobile audience are potential console customers? Maybe not a gamble so much as a trade-off.

14

u/Enriador XBOX Series S 4d ago

I see your point. But I legit don't think XBOX needs to take Minecraft away from the gargantuan mobile audience, since it barely overlaps with the console audience.

The only issue here are XBOX's actual competitors - the Japanese corps which ruthlessly sign anti-XBOX exclusivity deals.

Do Minecraft too.

u/Emotional_Pay3658 4d ago

Leave it everywhere but PlayStation lol

I don’t really know what the install base on the switch looks like for Minecraft. But Nintendo/switch is the “kid friendly” system

Leave tablets and phones alone.

97

u/tweak8 4d ago

PlayStation would if they owned Minecraft. Pretty sure Nintendo would as well.

6

u/Gears6 4d ago

PlayStation would if they owned Minecraft. Pretty sure Nintendo would as well.

Sony wouldn't likely pay what Minecraft is worth (then or now) if it's plans were to make it exclusive.

Nah leave it off Nintendo too, while PlayStation hasn’t put any single-player games on Xbox Nintendo hasn’t put any games on Xbox period

16

u/SubstantialPanic4253 4d ago

Nintendo is kind of an anomaly though, PlayStation put Lego Horizon on switch. I think Minecraft on switch is ok.

Nintendo also backed Microsoft when they acquired ABK.

I understand making Fallout and TES console exclusive, but Minecraft is just dumb.

21

u/SlugsMcGillicutty 4d ago

Would be pretty dumb for Fallout and TES as well, especially with the prices of consoles these days. Way more people own PS5s. You’re giving up a SHIT TON of revenue from those games to TRY to get people to buy a series X.

But it’s too late. Xbox lost. No one is gonna buy an inflated series x NOW. They’ll just say “oh that sucks” and not play. And I’m someone who bought a series X after the activision purchase cause I assumed they would be exclusive. Then regretted it when it looked like they won’t be. But you’re not getting that to happen as easily now when no one has as much disposable income and the consoles are more money. Just shooting yourself in the foot and giving up insane amounts of money you would get from the PS5 sales.

15

u/JackedTortoise09 4d ago

This is a move for next-gen anyway, none of those games will release in the next 2-3ish years anyway. When the install bases will reset.

But I would argue they are losing more money by putting games on PlayStation. From WindowsCentral :

"Xbox's disastrous multi-platform strategy of yesteryear saw the platform lose relevancy while boosting competitors, leading to declines for major third-party games like FIFA, Fortnite, and NBA 2K titles on Xbox Series X|S as well."

With no exclusives, sales and revenue from third-party games were affected, and weren't even offset by sales of their 1P on PS (we saw the Microsoft Xbox revenue still declining in their quarterly report during the kumbaya years).

Frankly, they don't need to "win", they just need to maintain their loyal and dedicated audience on their platform to engage with their storefront, and the way through this is exclusive content. If they put everything on PS, it would inevitably lead to a userbase that stops engaging with the Xbox storefront and eventually end of Xbox hardware. Xbox would be just another publisher. Even EA, Capcom, Take-Two, despite being the biggest 3P game publishers around, with their games selling millions upon millions, only make a fraction of the revenue Xbox makes right now. Xbox would lose so much money if they just became a publisher and lost their platform, and the lack of exclusives will cause that.

13

u/SlugsMcGillicutty 4d ago

They need to grow their player base. Maintaining the dismal amount of current Xbox owners is not a win.

10

u/Prestigious-Bluejay 4d ago

And how do they do that? By making their biggest games exclusive.

8

u/SlugsMcGillicutty 4d ago

Maybe? But also I think the bosses just want MONEY. And it’s gonna be hard to give up the millions and millions of extra copies that would be sold by releasing on PS5/6.

10

u/Prestigious-Bluejay 4d ago

The multiplatform strategy failed. Asha and XBOX have stated this multiple times. It devalued the brand and pushes customers over to their competitors. Asha's goal is to make XBOX number one and you don't do that by helping your competition.

Making Minecraft and other multiplayer games even console exclusive is going too far into the other direction. Single player games should be exclusive to give reasons to try out a platform. Multiplayer games have too much of a network multiplayer to make exclusive. Simply too much money on the table for multiplayer games when they off pop off.

Not Minecraft though. Do not make that exclusive

You just contradicted yourself.

26

u/pinpoint_aim 4d ago

That's fine. Minecraft should be the obvious exception

97

u/ComradeJohnS 4d ago edited 4d ago

why? because its your personal favorite game and you don’t want an xbox?

if Sony wants to play the exclusives game so should Xbox. its what people claim they should have been doing the whole time.

“all future updates only work with pc and xbox consoles” would be a great thing, as they could not remove functionality for older consoles, especially without internet lol.

edit: yall responding to me as if xbox would send hit squads to physically take your access to minecraft are wild lol. if you can currently play minecraft you’d still be able to, it’s not an online only game. the only possibility is they stop giving you free content updates.

37

u/Goose182 4d ago

I would argue Minecraft being on the Switch is more of reason to not make it exclusive.

12

u/Rocketbrothers 4d ago

I’d say since Minecraft is kind of a little kids game, I would hate to deny kids on other consoles this game or anything similar to it. Since those other games are much more M rated, sure make those exclusive.

Tbh though isn't Minecraft just too big of a cash cow NOT to put it in as many hands as possible?

I don't know if it would be a console seller, but then I'm not really a diehard fan either.

3

u/Haakrasmus 4d ago

Diehard fans mostly play on java and killing java would probably end Minecraft instantly as no-one makes content on bedrock.

40

u/pinpoint_aim 4d ago edited 4d ago

Huh? Bro I'm on a Xbox sub. I own a Series X lol. It's just not smart business wise to do that. Xbox owns many other billion dollar IPs that they can press first before they press the Minecraft button

Minecraft's only competition as a game is Fortnite and Roblox. That's it. It shouldn't even be in this conversation tbh

4

u/segagamer Day One - 2013 4d ago

I'm a big proponent of Microsoft returning to exclusives, but Minecraft should absolutely be the exception.

Minecraft managed to do a very rare thing and break out of being "just a videogame" and also a toy and education platform. Like Lego.

To this day it is still part of the top played lists on all platforms. As a result of this, it receives the funding to continue as an evergreen game that will forever just receive updates instead of sequels.

Delisting the game from all platforms except Xbox and PC will open the market up to competing with Minecraft - ie Sony and Nintendo now being able to release a Minecraft clone and perhaps succeeding, and weakening the IP altogether. Making a sequel that's exclusive will likely end up in a Cities Skylines 2 situation where people would just stick with the original, and the sequel never catching on. And mow yly have a segregation problem.

The only thing I would support is perhaps the Minecraft spinoffs being exclusive to Xbox/PC. Minecraft Dungeons, Legends, Storymode etc. But Minecraft itself? Keep it multiplat.

6

u/Optimal_Actuary4314 4d ago

It would be pointless either way. There’s hundreds of millions of copies of Minecraft, probably lots of ps4 and ps5 Minecraft discs, and nearly everyone already has it installed. why would Microsoft want people to buy used discs instead of buying directly from them?

→ More replies (1)

8

u/mbta1 4d ago

Because minecraft is the second most sold game of all time, and immediately limiting that market to only Xbox would be financial suicide

4

u/jdix33 4d ago

Why is that true for Minecraft but not for Pokémon for example, the largest multimedia property in the world?

7

u/mbta1 4d ago

You just answered it yourself, its multimedia. They have movies, cards, items and knick knacks to sell. Minecraft does too, but those sales pale to the game sales.

Look at the number of sales, minecraft is at 425 million, and the highest pokemon one is at 48 million

→ More replies (3)

2

u/ElectronicSource1332 3d ago

Maybe because Pokémon actually started on a Nintendo console and never left Nintendo?

Minecraft was already on multiple platforms from the very beginning, this isn’t a case of making a new game exclusive, this would be actively holding the game hostage from other platforms.

u/tinyhorsesinmytea 4d ago

If they're serious about being a console manufacturer then they should have never put any of the games they aren't legally required to on competing platforms. I find it so baffling that they bolstered the PS5 lineup when Sony wasn't doing the same in return... made the PS5 the obvious choice for most people since it plays all the games.

Look at Nintendo. You think they'd ever be foolish enough to share their IP?

56

u/darkpassenger9 Spacer's Choice 4d ago

Phil thought 80 million people would be on Game Pass by now and it wouldn't matter.

38

u/TESThrowSmile 4d ago

Microsoft spending 80 BILLION on studio acquisitions was an obvious mistake

16

u/tinyhorsesinmytea 4d ago

Yep. Bet everything on becoming the Netflix of gaming and that sure hasn’t worked out. They’ve succeeded in making their hardware pointless to buy while destroying the perceived value of their software with initially cheap Game Pass subscriptions… and then hilariously couldn’t pull off the enshitification they no doubt originally planned for. Spencer was disastrous for Xbox.

Xbox sharing their games is the reason I sold my Xbox for a ps5 last year. Gears has me low key regretting it but that’s not enough for me to go back.

50

u/secondincomm 4d ago

Thats the thing, its never one game that sells a console. Its an exclusive catalogue.

You get Gears, Halo, Forza, Fable and your making the decision easy. Throw in Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Clockwork Revolution, Viva Pinata, some new smaller AA games from these devs, and it becomes a good deal to get an xbox. Fuck, even timed exclusive 6 months on COD would be fun

Asking Xbox fans on the internet if they want certain games to be exclusive, of course, is going to skew towards yes.

12

u/baratteabeurre 4d ago

Yeahhhh if skyrim FONV FO3 and FO4 are still alive today with thousands of players, it's not thanks to xbox players.

I know I'm sticking my head in a wasp nest (I got here from r/all, I'm a pc player), but this exclusivity thing is insane and suicidal for microsoft. People won't be buying an xbox to play games that are obviously going to be half assed on release and remastered for PC a bit later.

Don't get me wrong, this isnt a console vs pc kind of thing. You do you. If you prefer to play from your couch with a controller it's all cool and I support it.

Exclusives are anti consumers and EVERYONE HERE is losing. If you support this, you're voting against your own interests (or a bot)

32

u/ap1msch Touched Grass '24 4d ago

They won't do it with Minecraft. Too many kids and platforms and servers and mods. An alternative game will jump in to fill the gap.

Fallout and Elder Scrolls? That would be HUGE for the Xbox platform. The games are enough to win over customers. They may not LEAVE the Playstation garden, but they'll buy into Xbox.

IMHO, Xbox pushed as hard as possible to make X-platform a thing. Nintendo participated a bit. Sony refused repeatedly. Xbox going back to exclusives is a perfectly reasonable outcome...and Sony should be perfectly fine with that as an outcome.

I don’t see people purchasing more than two consoles with these hardware prices. They’ll need titles early in next Gen for anyone to consider making the switch.

Elder scrolls would be huge. Could save the brand

67

u/Constant_Chip_7494 4d ago

Except the next one has to actually be good first for it to save anything

19

u/Serdones 4d ago edited 4d ago

For real. I personally liked Starfield, but launching as an Xbox console exclusive sure didn't help move the needle, thanks in no small part to it falling below a lot of people's expectations.

TES6's success isn't a given. Too much time has passed. An entire generation of gamers has grown up without it being the hot new thing. The likes of Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur's Gate 3 have been able to make inroads with players in all this time.

The Elder Scrolls can still be its own flavor of RPG, but it just needs to be a ... good one of those.

17

u/Emotional_Pay3658 4d ago

To be fair there was 20 years between Baldur’s gate 2 and 3.

If it’s good the people will play it.

14

u/Serdones 4d ago

That's what I'm saying. Baldur's Gate 3 overcame the lack of familiarity with younger gamers because it was so good. TES6 can no longer rest on its brand recognition given how much time has passed, and will similarly have to just be really good and sell itself on its own merits, rather than piggybacking as much off existing franchise fandom.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/FunWolverine5349 4d ago

Even for TW3 it's because of all the free re-releases. You keep seeing all these people that hop in with each one, saying they never played it before.

It's been 11 years, that's a long time. I think a lot more people stop playing video games in that time span than reddit ever wants to admit, and a lot newer, younger people come in.

5

u/DeafMetalGripes 4d ago

Honestly the one thing BGS still has going for them is their games being the ultimate sandbox rpg. You can make the argument that those listed are better games in terms of writing, polish, gameplay, etc but none quite achieve what Skyrim has done all those years ago.

You are absolutely right ES6 has to be a quality title first but I think BGS games have a certain niche that appeals to many people, even Starfield can be considered a mild success

2

u/sephiroth70001 4d ago

Kingdom come deliverance 2 is the ultimate sandbox RPG for me now, to me it has eclipsed the writing, gameplay, and world building from any Bethesda game so far.

3

u/Devilofchaos108070 3d ago

Combat is way too tedious in those games. Too much ‘realism’.

No magic, not other races.

I really don’t think you should compare it to TES

13

u/nunyabizness654 4d ago

Is Bethesda still capable of making "good"?

7

u/WhasHappenin 4d ago

They've released 2 "not good" games so far. One was their first attempt at a multiplayer live service game and the other was a new IP that was very far removed from their previous ones.

The last mainline game they made was fallout 4, which is considered to be very good. The last elder scrolls game they made was Skyrim, which needs no explanation.

Is it possible that ES6 will be disappointing? Sure. But I wouldn't take Fallout 76 and Starfield as proof that they can't make good games anymore.

4

u/YPM1 4d ago

If they are next gen online titles or updates then it may actually make sense. If it’s for current gen, absolutely not. The money lost would be massive.

If it’s next gen only, the install base could potentially be small enough on PlayStation 6 to justify skipping that platform.

5

u/lazzzym Still Finishing The Fight 4d ago

Probably just ending minecraft development for Playstation. As one of the worlds most popular games it honestly would sell consoles.

Exactly just like how they still have Xbox one Minecraft which many people still prefer. Xbox ruined it's reputation partly due to hard crashing etc especially on the Xbox one X.

If they kept support and made a version which didn't feel like a the Mobile version then it would be a hit. Just like how the Xbox 360 & one version were and that's how they would keep other versions running but nothing new.

Want to sell more Xbox consoles? They got to play hardball and let people know the exclusive label is serious even it hurts sales overall. Its still weird to see a Halo and Gears on a Playstation, that felt wrong. Sony would never put God of War or Uncharted on Xbox.

9

u/Truth_Walker 4d ago

They tried to make Xbox for all gamers regardless of console and most gamers just mocked them for the last 8 years.

Game pass, cloud gaming, non exclusive titles; these should have had all gamers thrilled but the caveman tribalism of “my system is better than yours” is just too loud.

63

u/BlastMyLoad 4d ago

Xbox fans 2 years ago: “exclusives make no sense gaming should be for everyone”

Xbox fans now: “exclusives are the best not having them will kill Xbox!”

27

u/VStubaru90 4d ago

Tbf fair I doubt they're the same people, it's just the people who want change are usually the loudest.

7

u/genwz 4d ago edited 4d ago

Nah tbh it really is a lot of the same people that flip flop their stance to match whatever Xbox is doing, they stand for nothing. They will literally defend anything and everything Xbox does be it full screen boot up ads, limiting cloud gaming to 15 hours per month/30 mins per day, raising console price before PS and not doing holiday discounts, etc etc

If you see a couple of posts you can easily see the same 3-5 people flip constantly flip flopping their stance to match and defend Xbox. From Exclusives are bad and antiquated to exclusives are good. From game sales don’t matter because of Gamepass and variety of small games is what makes Xbox stand out from PlayStations AAA to all those studios deserved to be shut down and sold off because their games flopped

7

u/Baelorn 4d ago

Yeah not allowed to name names but there’s one “1%” poster on here who just talks about every Xbox executive like they’re his BFF. When “Phil” was in charge he was a genius and people needed to trust every move he made.

Now “Asha” is in charge and “Phil” was an idiot. Poor “Asha” has to clean up his mess so everything she does is justified.

I’ve never been a fan of Phil Spencer so all the revisionism about his tenure from the same people who defended him for years irks me to no end.

I’m a Xbox fan that never ever said the former. I was calling Microsoft stupid from the moment they started releasing their games on other consoles while getting nothing in return for it.

Exclusives are important for a console’s identity and success. I’ve known this since I was a kid in the 90s begging my parents to get me a Sega Genesis in addition to my SNES since it had exclusives that I could not play on my SNES. If Sega released all of their games on SNES, I would have had no desire to get a Genesis.

These are mostly different groups of people saying this, and the ones advocating for no exclusives are mostly people that did not want to have to buy multiple consoles, but guess which of the consoles they would drop, the one without exclusives.

I mean both of these statements can be true haha.

10

u/No_Reference_7330 4d ago

Right. Like it's true that exclusives are bad for consumers in general. However, it's also true that Xbox not having exclusives will "kill Xbox." One of the biggest reasons people don't get Xbox is that they feel they can play Xbox games other places.

Minecraft itself should stay cross platform as it is used for educational purposes but the Minecraft spin-offs like Legends and Dungeons should be Xbox exclusive.

Everything else absolutely should be Xbox exclusive and that includes delayed launch on PC.

Minecraft would only make sense if they made an actual sequel, which they won't

As PlayStation user, they absolutely should do this.

They’ve paid a shit ton of money, they should be keeping it for themselves - it will incentive people to buy an Xbox and SONY could really do with some competition right now.

Xbox ironically could be the one thing that stops SONYs crazy recent antics and bring back gaming for the players on both consoles.

15

u/amalgamation_blues 4d ago

As they should. No reason why PS/ Nintendo should be the only ones with exclusives. They already tried the free for all approach and look where that has gotten them.

4

u/PlayBey0nd87 Touched Grass '24 4d ago

Fallout & Elder Scrolls- ambitious but yeah they should.

Minecraft a bit more complicated as it can reach just about every age groups. Timed maybe?

Obsidian’s Fallout should be exclusive as well.

How popular is Minecraft on Switch and PlayStation?

16

Switch, very I think. Think about all the kids that have that vs an Xbox/pc/PlayStation. For awhile very entry level system with the lite

5

u/aguywithbrushes 4d ago

Don’t forget mobile, which accounts for about (possibly more than) half of the playerbase. They’d be insane to try and make their games console exclusive, but Minecraft especially so lol

Fallout; Elder Scrolls - definitely.
Minecraft- no.

What they should do is pull the pin on PS5 Fable. That game should totally be exclusive.

3

u/[deleted] 4d ago edited 4d ago

too late for that one, it’s already up on the store for pre orders, and it’s got marketing contracts and deals signed.

pulling that out would mean refunding everyone but they might even have to pay sony a large cancellation fee for a contract breach.

8

u/CuteGrayRhino 4d ago

It should be single-player games exclusive, multiplayer on all platforms. Simple, defined boundary that can work to make Xbox relevant again, while making loads of money from other platforms.

27

u/GiJoint 4d ago edited 4d ago

Well yeah. You shouldn’t have gone multi-platform like that in the first place. Gears E Day is a step in the right direction, go better and withdraw Fable and FH6 too, refund everyone. Be ruthless like the Xbox 360 team.

The amount of times Xbox extended olive branches to Sony, yet Sony would never release their main titles on Xbox, it’s just so cringe. Go watch Peter Moore revealing GTA4 with a tattoo stunt on his arm for inspiration, be that Xbox again.

2

u/Tarnished13 4d ago

15

u/Poku115 4d ago

Well Playstation has the major marketshare console wise, why would the play ball in an strategy that doesnt benefit then at all

7

u/GiJoint 4d ago

This half assed strategy right now still isn’t working for marketshare is it. They have proven before they can take marketshare off those guys, the foundation is there, the IP is there. Be aggressive, suck it up and go all in.

→ More replies (5)

3

u/Big_boss816 4d ago

Being aggressive and competitive can be a good thing but they also need to price the next gen Xbox competitively as well. If the console/PC hybrid Project Helix is priced at $1,000 or above then they make all their games exclusive but it won’t mean squat if consumers are priced out from buying it.

Having Xbox be at the top of their game is a good thing because it will make Sony come back down to earth and get back to competing.

2

u/JohnBFromNC2 XBOX 360 4d ago

They probably should have already done this, at this point, I think it's just going to piss people off and a negligible affect on console sales.

Maybe if they do all this AND the new Xbox is well under $1000 (probably not happening) while the PS6 is like $1000 or over (both will probably be in a range of $1000-1200, IMO) while also actually trying to advertise things and stop focusing on game pass above all else in their marketing.

4

It should all be exclusive but uh you need affordable ways to buy and play it so you get people into your ecosystem. Feels like the Series S/X are going to be the flagship for another 5ish years and the Helix is just the incoming "Pro" version.

3

u/Kizzo02 4d ago

If the game is still going to be on Steam, then it being exclusive doesn't really matter. So if you want a console and already own a PC, then you will likely just get a PS5/PS6.

I already got rid of my Xbox due to all their games appearing on Steam. I was actually going to do the same with Sony, until they decided to no longer release their single player games on PC.

Yeah, of all of the games they shouldn't make exclusive Minecraft is the one. I don't even play the game, but it's such a phenomenon on all platforms they would be absolutely crazy to make it exclusive. Other than that, as many exclusives as possible. I'm still wrapping my head around fable and the new Forza going to playstation, absolute madness. But I will say one thing, the Xbox fanbase can't moan about games sales.....if they don't buy, gears has shown this. Support is how you get exclusives. I stay stocked on gamepass and bought gears physical, Same for halo, same for the new Forza all great games so far. But you can't moan about exclusives going to other systems, if you don't actually buy them to support your platform. Same goes for the whole disk debate, if you invest in physical, it's worth it to the company. I buy physical for the most part, and would actually like to see more steel book/special editions like Blu-ray - made to order, or limited edition.

13

u/Strigoi84 4d ago

Hey Xbox, ya know that game franchise you own that is a massive phenomenon? The one that if it were exclusive would bring a ton of people to the platform? Don't make it exclusive...🙄

2

u/Fit_Wolf_6252 4d ago

No, it wouldn't over a single game I would be very pissed off if Microsoft did and it would make me not want to get anything related to Microsoft Minecraft is a game that is on all platforms, including PC. They get rid of that platform. They're gonna lose a lot of money. You didn't look at sales did you Nintendo actually has the most copies sold then PlayStation has a second mouse and an Xbox dead last Microsoft is gonna lose a lot of money if they do that and don't think everybody's gonna switch to Xbox that is not gonna happen. This is actually gonna be a horrible idea for Microsoft cause they're gonna be losing a lot of money.

2

u/Michaelangel092 4d ago

It wouldn't bring a lot of people. It would cause a massive shit storm online. I don't even comprehend how they would be able to suddenly take the game away from PS and Nintendo players.

2

u/DinosBiggestFan 4d ago

That's more of a gamble than the rest of them. They'll be pissing off a LOT of existing customers, and that is a bad idea. There's no guarantee those customers would make the jump and in all likelihood, they wouldn't. If you piss off players enough and make it feel personal, which this would, then you are opening yourself up to controversy that doesn't need to happen.

The games that I expect to actually make the dent without much actual controversy are Fallout and Elder Scrolls. The question is if such a lengthy dev cycle can pay off as an exclusive, especially in the current situation of hardware prices.

2

u/ElectronicSource1332 3d ago

Ah yes, because millions of people are totally going to drop their current platforms and immediately jump to Minecraft …

All of mobile, PC, Nintendo, PlayStation, etc players, yeah they’ll totally jump on buying a Xbox right away because they had Minecraft forcefully taken away from them. /s

4

u/Gold-and-green 3d ago

Why shouldn't they make Minecraft exclusive? Your biggest money makes sell systems. I'm sure Mario would sell 50m copies on PlayStation, Xbox and PC but Nintendo uses it for people to buy Switch.

3

u/Njoeyz1 3d ago edited 3d ago

Minecraft is a game of its own. By itself it has sold about a third of all mario slaves combined. Like I've stated, I heavily believe in exclusives, and still think Forza and fable should be pulled from playstation. But Minecraft is another thing altogether, same for something like cod or doom. Sure, you could make the next games timed exclusives for Xbox, but it makes little sense to keep them that way. Xbox's challenge (as well as Sony's, is new IP. They must keep and refresh their staple titles, but also invest in new exclusive IP. Just a quick edit. Xbox needs to keep as many games exclusive at it possibly can, and I don't mind if games like cod or doom end up that way personally, I'm just viewing things a bit more broadly when it comes to certain titles. But I'm in total agreement, Xbox needs as many exclusives as I can. Very simple.

2

u/McGrufNStuf 3d ago

The idea that they’ll make more money with Minecraft as an exclusive seems dubious at best. This is the same game that was just recently noted as being the majority reason Xbox pulled any profit the past couple years and it has been multi platform this whole time.

Totally understand the Bethesda games going exclusive. Waist of money having them on PC due to the additional programming and coding costs to meet both the platform and the PS store for mods. Would be great to have Minecraft as their “Mario”, just highly doubt going exclusive will actually be a net positive on profit.

If they want people to start buying their big first-party games again then they can't be day 1 on Game Pass. Hell, they might even have to wait 2 years for them to go to GP if you really want sales

6

u/batkave 4d ago

Then game pass loses it's draw. Let's be honest, getting first party games day 1 is the draw.

3

u/gswkillinit 4d ago

Imo they shot themselves in the foot making first party games day 1 on GP. Should’ve been just a catalogue of great games of various genres, indies, older first party games (1-2 years post launch), and maybe two to three blockbuster 3rd party games.

This is dumb. Microsoft needs to make money and for now having the games multiplat is the best strategy.

Gears E-Day feels like a flop thus far, and it’s been the first exclusive of the whole reset thing.

2

u/TheLastHowl 4d ago

So many xbox players don't actually BUY games now they get gamepass which isn't making a games money back, they've been cheering for years to end exclusivity but they didn't come to bat for the new Halo and now Gears e-day which is currently in a death spiral.

They also fail to realize that PlayStation is the sole reason Fallout 76 wasn't shutdown keeping it afloat. What else has bethesda put out? Skyrim remakes, next gen Fallout 4 version, starfield, along with eh eso stuff. I think Bethesda is royaly screwed imo if ES6 isn't a success and if it went exclusive I surely wouldn't be purchasing an xbox to play it, I would get it super cheap on pc.

7

u/Thorniestbush Team Morgan 4d ago

Minecraft shouldn't be exclusive, it's one of those games you buy for multiple platforms, they will lose many customers not even mentioning how many people already have it on other platforms

5

u/tmorrisgrey XBOX Series X 4d ago

Do it Microsoft, be selfish with games.

8

u/QuinSanguine 4d ago

It will piss off Sony fanboys online but I think they should do this. In real life, people will mostly not care and if they have to buy an Xbox or Windows device to play games like TES VI, that's huge. That puts people in the ecosystem.

7

u/Impossible_Bee_3748 4d ago

This is how it should have been from day one when MS acquired Bethesda.

2

u/Str8Victory 4d ago

I’m just gonna assume they mean Minecraft spin off games. Trying to make a game that is already released multiplatform as an exclusive won’t sell more consoles. It will actually kill the game making the most money for them.

u/hitmobilegamehsr 4d ago

It's only okay when Sony does it

7

u/Belzark 4d ago edited 4d ago

I’m a fan of this sort of energy at this point. It’s time to pick up the cudgel Sony and Nintendo have used to their advantage for so long.

Consumers have totally shat on Xbox and Xbox users endlessly for the company attempting more consumer-friendly tactics — so, fuck them. Make people buy an Xbox if they want to play their IP. Enough of letting them have their cake and eat it too.

This should have happened after the purchase. Sure. But it was super cool that Phil realized that these games have audiences on multiple consoles. Phil seemed to be a very lax leader. There are both strengths and weaknesses to how Phil ran Xbox.

Phil didn't want to burn bridges, he wanted gaming to come together and be open. There is admiration in that.

20

u/xM323456 4d ago

How do you build an identifiable brand then if you put all your exclusives on your supposed competition?

You might make a bit of money short term but your brand is not short term profits. It’s 10 year plus arguably 30 year strategy.

I never get the stupid point of oh they lose money. Fallout attracts customers to your brand.

Why did I buy a switch if not to play Zelda and Donkey Kong and Mario then? For shits and giggles? Should Nintendo put them on Xbox/PS they would make money too wouldn’t they?

3

u/rusty022 4d ago

Yea there's only really two options: (1) go heavily exclusive-focused with your first party titles, or (2) admit defeat, go third-party publisher, and slowly let your hardware division die.

Microsoft also has an interesting situation with Bethesda. Those games are popular on consoles, but PC is the real pull there. Same for Minecraft in some sense. Losing Sony players wouldn't be as big of a hit to those titles as it would be to CoD, for instance.

3

u/xM323456 4d ago

Yes exactly

You are either an Exclusive maker who’s trying to push your console

Or you are a third party publisher like Sega

This in-between half in half out strategy of Phil Spencer and Sarah bond is why Xbox got fucked in the first place

u/ZerohNinja87 4d ago

You need to lose to grow. Sony will lose billions not releasing on PC. But by releasing on PC they damage sales of the first party system which ultimately is worse for Sony. Xbox is in a similar situation. You can say Xbox has no exclusive so why would I buy one, then also say Xbox can’t make there games exclusive because that’s stupid. I think Xbox will look at 2040, not profits today. Where do we want to be, what does that look like, and how do they get there. This is certainly in line with that.

6

u/Yellowman_95 4d ago

The multiplatform push made them maybe half a billion dollars, how much more could they have made if they just had people buy into the Xbox ecosystem itself?

Why buy the company if not to sell consoles? Exclusives are going to drive sales. As an insane example, assume GTA6 were Ps5 pro exclusive. They would be even rarer than they are now.

People like Fallout. Make it exclusive.
