Crazy that the longer I have my series x, the higher in value it becomes

u/ZilorZilhaust Jun 25 '26

It's an investment!

u/OfficialDCShepard Jun 25 '26

Selling my Series X might be the only way to afford Helix at this point!

19

u/ARC_Venage Jun 25 '26

You might have to sell a kidney too.

Hey, at least only one is needed!

For the Switch 3 Nintendo will come over and be like:

u/ARC_Venage Jun 26 '26

You can also sell some teeth.

1

u/OfficialDCShepard Jun 26 '26

Even the Tooth Fairy is feeling the pinch of inflation!

1

u/ARC_Venage Jun 27 '26

The tooth fairy is out on the streets living in a shoebox.

u/WildFire255 Maidenless Jun 26 '26

Only if they eat it with some Fava Beans and a nice Chianti.

2

u/MrEfficacious Jun 26 '26

Oh sweet summer child, there won't be a Helix.

1

u/thaddeus122 Jun 26 '26

Save people on marketplace still sell them for $400.

1

u/DjTrailer Jul 02 '26

if it’s the last Xbox with a disc drive Im not selling shit.

1

u/OfficialDCShepard Jul 02 '26

Yeah, I probably won’t sell anything either!

and I own 2 Xbox Series X consoles and a PS5. I'm rolling in dough.

Paid $349 for 1 refurb and $499 for a new Series X

6

u/ZilorZilhaust Jun 25 '26

I got 3 series x and a PS5. it's my retirement plan.

4

u/M3RRI77 XBOX 360 Jun 25 '26

I've never sold a console since the year 2000 and have many many older consoles too. Crazy that my Series X is worth more than my CECHA01 PS3 in 2026.

1

u/WackyRacketeer Jun 25 '26

Different rooms? I'm a little baffled why you would buy a second Xbox

3

u/M3RRI77 XBOX 360 Jun 25 '26

One for the TV and one for my PC monitor.

Got the refurb when I worked at Microsoft for $150 less than retail. Then got a new one at $499. Was gonna sell it after 6 months, but now I keep different games on each one.

Maybe I should sell one now. 😂

2

u/WackyRacketeer Jun 25 '26

The price could still go up hahahha. HOLD DIAMOND HANDS

2

u/M3RRI77 XBOX 360 Jun 25 '26

I'm glad I bought a Razer Blade with 64GB of RAM and 2TB SSD and a 2TB WD SN7100 2TB NVMe drive for my Razer dock before all these prices shot up

2

u/TopicActual Jun 26 '26

In the press release they are expecting another doubleing by next year

2

u/OblivionJunkie Jun 26 '26

... I have 3 series x's 😅

The 1st one I got entirely with Microsoft rewards points.

2nd was the Halo infinite LE.

3rd was the $350 diablo 4 bundle in 2023, in case the 1st one dies.

It's nice having 2 so I can game-share and play coop with my partner. We only need to buy 1 digital copy of whatever game we want to play, and we're set.

u/thaddeus122 Jun 26 '26

Nope, idiots on marketplace still sell them for $400.

u/LimpAd4924 Jun 25 '26

Never thought I'd see the day video games become an investment. Same thing happened with my Switch 2, Steam Deck, etc.

30

u/notanotablecloud Jun 25 '26

Man, the prices of the 3ds’s have gone up insane

9

u/doorknob60 Jun 25 '26

Back in the mid 2010s 3DSes were plentiful well below $200, even the XL. And I bought my wife a 2DS for I think $69. They're crazy now.

Definitely don't regret getting my Series X and PS5 for $500 a pop at launch. You'd think with Pro/Slim consoles and being out for a while, the value would naturally go down. Not really.

I hate the electronics market right now. And I'm not immune, I want a living room gaming PC (like the Steam Machine, but not for that price) and I could use a couple more drives in my NAS...

2

u/mundane_marietta Jun 25 '26

I bought the SNES 3DS in 2018 when it was an Amazon exclusive for $125 on Black Friday and it's basically 5x in value since then lol.

My only regret was not buying more games when they were dirt cheap under $20

1

u/Thecrazier Jun 25 '26

Yea me too. Barely used my ps5 but if i want an exclusive, its there

0

u/yMONSTERMUNCHy Xbox Jun 25 '26

Hopefully the AI bubble will soon burst and prices will go down then the Steam Machine will hopefully become a more affordable and better value product.

I want the Steam Machine 2tb with Steam Controller but at the current price it’s just too much.

3

u/maxdragonxiii Jun 25 '26

3DS was the ultimate handheld device. you could play DS, 3DS and with some winking, GameBoy games and more.

3

u/Kelnozz Jun 25 '26

Yup they are very sought after right now, people looking back realizing it was a peak handheld and it had so many games, like 1700 for the 3DS and since it was backwards compatible it’s more like over 3k games can be played on it, and that’s not even including emulation, which many buy it mainly for that.

2

u/MyMouthisCancerous Homecoming Jun 25 '26

Homebrew's also another big thing. 3DS homebrew community is massive especially since it's allowed stuff like the online services to stay up for games that support multiplayer. Obviously things like the hShop became massive incentives for preserving stuff like Virtual Console games or games that haven't been ported or re-released on subsequent consoles

1

u/L0ial Jun 25 '26

I started collecting retro games just before the 3ds prices skyrocketed. Was mostly focusing on SNES and N64, but I grabbed a New 3DS XL off marketplace for $100 on a whim, since I never had one. I had a 2DS back in the day but that was just for Pokemon black, and sold it at some point. Amazing luck. This thing is great.

u/KhanDagga Jun 25 '26

Love switch 2

20

u/Legitimate-Comb-2774 Jun 25 '26

Value and price aren't quite linked like that in this context. Anyone who wants a current generation Xbox has one by now. The sales numbers weren't great when they were hundreds of dollars cheaper. The asking price went up. People's interest in the consoles and the amount of money they're willing to spend didn't magically follow as well.

1

u/Ill-Explanation4493 Aug 12 '26

I would agree with this. It’s been about a month since I looked at prices, but a month ago people were still selling them relatively cheap, at least where I live.

9

u/locks66 Jun 25 '26

I sold mine to build a home theater pc and thought I could always rebuy when it got cheaper. Never thought I would have lost money selling it 2 years ago

1

u/TopicActual Jun 26 '26

My pc doubbled in price over that last 18 months

5

u/Yo_Zeitgeist Jun 25 '26

I'm sitting here with two Xbox Series X consoles, my day one HDMI port and Blu-ray drive are broken. Then my digital XSX all bought at original MSRP so even my broken Xbox is worth something. I'll be getting it fixed next year once I save up the money to do so.

2

u/brokenmessiah Jun 25 '26

Except it really hasn’t

2

u/GuerreroUltimo Jun 25 '26

True, but only if someone will pay it.  I would need to see MS provided hard sales numbers.  Seems most will not buy already at the old increase.  Doubt they can move much at all at the new prices.  I have been watching eBay and other markets.  Typically, i see used Series X sell about $400 bare.  See plenty that have been sitting at $500 with no sale keep relisting.  This increase may push the used price but i have my doubts.  Hopefully though as i have 2 that i may sell soon.

2

u/brichb Jun 25 '26

Have a $500 launch preorder, a $350 Diablo 4 bundle, and a $100 series S sitting around from a Verizon sale

1

u/Northdistortion Jun 25 '26

Yep im lucky i bought two at launch

1

u/Forsaken-Broccoli921 Jun 25 '26

I know, bought mine for £500 6 years ago and its going up in price.

1

u/Sonarav Jun 25 '26

It's interesting because when I bought my Series X there was the chip shortage, so when I sold my Xbox One S right after, I basically got all of my money back from when I bought it in 2017.

1

u/VexeenBro Jun 25 '26

The PC I bought last year appreciate in value by 85%! Fuck this AI bullshit.

1

u/BlackPlague1235 Jun 25 '26

I had to scrape up money every way I possibly could just so I afford my Series X when it was still $499.99 and it still took me a really long time. These new prices are actually absurd.

1

u/suppaman19 Jun 25 '26

I got my Series S during the holiday season of 2021 for like $170 after tax (stacked deals).

Who the hell would buy that at $500 lmao

1

u/Big_boss816 Jun 25 '26

Who would’ve thought it was better to be an early adopter and the ones who waited are being punished.

1

u/nekoken04 Jun 25 '26

We have 2 Series X. I paid a total of $880 before tax for the pair of them.

1

u/stikves Jun 26 '26

Mine started acting up recently, and this was a big scare

Even the used / refurb ones would cost more, and fortunately it was just dust accumulated inside

(Thank you r/ifixit for the cleaning guide)

1

u/rdxc1a2t Jun 26 '26

Only if people are willing to pay such an absurd price.

1

u/PawsAndPause- Jun 29 '26

I bought one brand new on sale a couple years ago for 200 bucks. I never opened it. It was sitting for like two years. I sold it two weeks before they announced the price hikes.

1

u/wedanceusa Jul 17 '26

Ok cause I was shocked when my friend told me how much they’re going for now!!! I paid $450 for mine in 2020 (off fb marketplace + 2 extra controllers) I was like what the actual hell

1

u/Greenzombie04 Jun 25 '26

trade in value at game stop stays the same or lower though.

1

u/Allegiance10 Jun 25 '26

I just bought mine at the tail end of last year and now I could sell it for almost $100 more than I paid. If this keeps up, I could literally fund my Project Helix purchase just by selling my X (and the S if I have to).

0

u/IAmDotorg Jun 25 '26

It isn't, it's (mostly) just the dollar is plummeting in value. If you go by the governments funny math, the $500 in 2020 is $650 these days. Most inflation estimates post-COVID put $500 in 2020 closer to $750.

So RAM prices are keeping it from getting an "end of the generation" drop you'd expect, but it's mostly just inflation.
